PlayStation 5 [OT] Taking Over The World One SSD At A Time

Returnal looks fucking awesome. I really want Housemarque to succeed, such a talented studio, but I gotta pay like 80-85 bucks for this and I'm not really up for that, no matter how good a game looks. If I'm gonna pay that it have to be top tier, like Elden Ring or a new mainline Final Fantasy.

I noticed one day when playing Demon's Souls with the Pulse how as I was walking up some stairs in 4-2 (from the cave you get pushed down into) that there was the sound of scurrying rats. It was so subtle, but as you're running up and the camera is moving around you, you actually hear these rats down below you and the direction it comes from moves effortlessly while the camera changes.

It was such a small detail that my brain just picked up on randomly. It's hard for me to play anything without the headphones. I'm playing Ghost of Tsushima with them now too.

Imo, what makes the PS5 so great is the Dualsense in combination with the Pulse. I feel more in the zone. I wouldn't go as far as to say its like that first VR experience, but its immersive. I sold my Pro to buy a Pulse and a few PS5 games and didn't regret it one bit.

I bought Dirt 5 now that it's $40 everywhere, and I gotta say what a beautiful looking game. Evolution studios has done it again. Yes, some races look meh and downright ugly, but those same tracks are transformed in the right lighting conditions. Dusk setting in this game with the sun shining through looks photorealistic at times. Rain under cloudy conditions making mud transports me to Motostorm Pacific Rift days. Snow levels with the gorgeous light bounce off of the iced tracks makes everything look like it was lit by ray traced GI. Looks phenomenal. I think it's a cross between driveclub and motorstorm and if you are a fan of either of two those games, you gotta give this game a chance.

They did a great job with the dualsense controls too. The haptics on the triggers feels great, and every once in a while you hit some bump in the road and i swear its like in real life when I go over something when driving. it's rare but its amazing. I actually think they can improve it even further by implementing sound effects coming out of the controller like demon souls. DS added it a few weeks ago and it completely transformed the experience. it's not the entire audio, just bits and pieces and really enhances the experience.

So yes, go buy it. it looks great. it feels great, and above all it plays great.

With that out of the way, lets talk about how fucking broken the image quality mode is in this game. it chugs and stutters like crazy in some turns even if there are no cars on screen. you can be leading the lap and it will stutter and chug for a game 2 seconds which is an eternity in a racing game. these arent framedrops, these are stutters you see on pc games. this is clearly broken and im quite frankly flabbergasted by how this hasnt been fixed. apparently people have been complaining about it since november when this issue was introduced in a patch that added vsync to the PS5 version, and evo hasnt fixed it.

I am tagging @NXGamer and hoping he covers it even if its for a short 2 minute video. it is simply unacceptable for a game to perform this bad. switching to prioritize resolution mode reduces the framedrops but it still chugs, just not as bad as it does in the image quality mode. only the 120 fps mode seems to work fine but i dont like the cuts they made to the graphics in that mode.

Looks like they just fixed the xbox version, but i hate that it came at the expense of the ps5 version. surely, they shouldve known the game performs awful in some races even if they dont read era or twitter.

This is absolutely a fun game. It doesn't feel like Dirt to me, which is good. I played 4 VERY briefly but I played the first 3 a lot. They were okay but felt too off.

This feels more like Driveclub to me. Its more forgiving, but I do get those feels from the weight, sounds, post-processing and sense of speed. Dirt 5 plays like an easier version of that, but heavier than the other Dirt games I have played. IQ mode I tried for one lap and knew enough, it has framedrops. I stay away from it since.

The graphics are really, really good under the right circumstances. Like, a Greece stage with rainy weather in cockpit mode. Its like a 60fps version of Driveclub. I play with headset and both the sounds and the music are kickin'. Its a very upbeat arcade racer. I like it.

i have coil whine and its absolutely annoying in quieter areas. i hate it. give it a few weeks. mine was silent in the beginning too.

the disc fan drive is also extremely noisy. there is clearly a defect here. i used to hear the pro's disc drive kick in but this is something else. there is something loose in there. no disc drive is this loud. thankfully it wasnt a big deal when watching tenet.

its possible that the first shipment PS5s were built first and had these issues that were later ironed out in production. the disc drive and coil whine noises are awful.
Thankfully I've had no issues with this since launch. The disc drive isn't noticeable either, but that might just be a factor of my distance from the device?

How the hell am I supposed to travel with the PS5? The PS4 Pro would fit into my backpack nicely or I would just put it into a cardboard box.

But the PS5 is so oddly shaped, large, and the stand makes it inconvenient.. what the hell am I supposed to do?

Found my first annoying thing with the PS5. It randomly loses connection to the internet and I have to restart the system to connect again. Been trying to download Days Gone now on three separate occasions due to loss of connection and even been kicked out from Demon's Souls server too a couple of times. I have a wi-fi repeater to strengthen the signal and yet the PS5 loses it. Had the same issue with PS4 but at least it reconnected itself after a minute or two.

It's clearly linked to using a repeater. I'd change the repeater for a more expansive model with better emission / reception.

Watch the new Mystic vid. He shows a hardcase for PS5 ;D

Once a month I open up my PC and clean it out. I mostly just use an air duster, Q-tips, and some microfiber cloth.

For PS5 I am gonna pop the vents off once a month and try to eliminate dust buildup. Based on how it is designed, I get the impression that instead of using an air blower/duster, I would be better off getting a mini-vacuum and trying to suck out any dust accumulating around the vents and the undersides. Is this correct? Would any mini-vac do or should I be looking for something specific, attachment wise?

It does look

FUCKING AWESOME AND I ALSO WANT IT NOW !!!

Does anyone know if it makes a difference in load times going with an external ssd sata vs nvme drive for playing ps4 games on ps5?

The nvme offers double the read/write speeds but will the ps5 take advantage of that for loading ps4 games? I understand it will be faster moving games from internal drive to external but if load times aren't quicker I may just go with a cheaper ssd sata drive.

Mainly looking at the Samsung T5 or T7. Or possibly the sandisk extreme 1tb

Probably a little faster compared to a mechanical drive but it doesn't utilise the internal SSD IO, as I understand.

I can't find the link right now but but I remember watching one or two loading time comparison vids that were put up when the PS5 launched and, if I recall correctly, external NVMe only offered minimal gains vs a SATA SSD externally, I assume due to the bottleneck now being USB 3.1 Gen 2? I am pretty sure it was 1-2 seconds difference at most, but I could be wrong.

I will try to post any comparison vid or article I find.

I find myself constantly stopping my bike in Days Gone just to watch the scenery. Haven't used fast travel once. I just hop on my bike and ride the roads. The wilderness is breathtaking. The weather effects in particular are amazing. It's also filled with a lot of tense encounters. Playing with headphones hearing those awful freakers gets my blood pumping like crazy. Love this game so far. If you have PS + collection, this is the first game you should download. Or buy. Or replay.

I agree.

I plat'd DG when it came out, but went back in and polished off the survival mode/NG+ trophies and am chipping away at the challenge trophies to 100% the trophy list on PS5.

Out of all the games I tested, it feels like the biggest/nicest facelift so far for a PS4 game on PS5, but I am coming from a perspective of having never played Ghost of Tsushima on base PS4 so I can't compare it. Also, worth noting that TLOU2 and FF7:R haven't received their PS5 patches yet, so we will see how those stack up.

DG is beautiful and silky smooth perfection on PS5 though, for sure.

edit: or...not?

So, I just looked up No Man's Sky footage on PS5 and it seems to be a pretty impressive update too. Am considering buying it for 30 bucks on PSN sale. I played it for 30 hours when it first launched, on PC, and never went back to it...

Anyone playing the PS5 version?

That would be great, let me know if you find it.

I've looked at a few comparison videos but haven't found one where they are comparing external ssd sata vs external ssd nvme. Most are comparing external ssd vs external hdd and yeah the ssd's are much quicker. Just don't know if external nvme drives are worth the extra money over sata from a load time perspective only as I won't be using it on the computer or anything. It'll be plugged into the ps5 all the time

I'm playing it from time to time. It looks and runs great. It has really come together on PS5. I remember it struggled on PS4, but no more, it is so much better now. If you only played it at launch, you'll probably be surprised by how much the game has changed with all the added expansions and upgrades. The core gameplay loop is unchanged though so if you didn't like it when you played it the first time, you probably won't like it now.

So apparently im able to play Vanquish on PC with the DualSense Haptics now. Unfortunately the controller is just emulating your standard rumble so the vibrations do feel a bit off.

Developers must include code in the game to harness the haptic features, without it it's just a regular rumble.

Just playing Ghost of Tsushima for the first time on ps5 and it looks and plays great. My only complaint is the fixed controls. Having enjoyed the layout on demons souls and god of war I’d like the quick and heavy attack mapped to the triggers, it feels dated and awkward using face buttons for such actions.

I’m sure this questions been answered so I apologize in advance but what happens when I play my PS4 games on my PS5? For example I purchased cyberpunk 2077 digitally will it automatically play as the PS5 version in terms of the better frame rate and resolution?

Yes, although there is no PS5 version of cyberpunk.
