PlayStation 5 [OT] Taking Over The World One SSD At A Time

I think I want to finally get the FFVII remake, but now I'm stuck in limbo wondering if it's worth it right now on PS5 before they release a real patch or upgraded version.

Didn't have much time to spend with PS5 before heading off to work, but I did the setup and fooled around with UI. Very snappy and fast, I like that. Demon's Souls and No Man's Sky is installed and ready to play when I get home from work.

It's very silent, only noise is from disc insertion for maybe 30 seconds but I gotta spend more time playing to really know. Rest mode seems to working as intended, installed NMS and got a notification on my phone through the app that the download was a success. Hopefully the console isn't bricked when I get home and wake the PS5 up.

I tried to download and install Bloodborne from the app at work but it only got queued so I aborted. I'm gonna try again when I'm home, the internet at work is a little spotty.

My only complaint so far is the copying from disc. It took fairly long, maybe 20-25 minutes, but I thought the SSD was gonna eliminate the copying?

Overall, a good first impression. Can't wait to get home and try out some games.

The controller firmware updating is pretty stupid, I keep skipping the update because I'm charging my other controller when it comes up and I just want to play my game, and there is no way to manually get the update.

Last night I got the update prompt, and skipped it. So today I figure when I turn on my console it should appear and I'll update it. Turn it on.....nothing. Menus have no way to update the firmware. Looking on Reddit I think it's tied to a certain amount of time passing, so some dude had to go and disconnect from the internet and delete the controller from teh system, then redo it from scratch.

Like holy shit guys, put it under the system update section or the accessory settings.

Been playing Demon's Souls now. Opened up the first short cut. Holy fucking shit at the graphics. It looks even better than the videos I've seen. Doing 4k/30 cinematic with all bells and whistles. Sound is amazing too with Pulse headset. I come from a base PS4 so this is a huge jump in quality for me.

So far the PS5 has worked flawless. Dead silent, rest mode works as intended, I've downloaded games and apps and no crashes or glitches. Next I will try out the external hard drive and some back compat games. Itchin for some FF 15 and Dark Souls 3.

Very happy so far 😊

Been playing Demon's Souls all morning and day. Very hard to put down. Incredible remake so far. I can't get over how fucking good it looks. It's so atmospheric, and the sound design in particular is outstanding. Sony having this ready for launch is unbelievable. For me it's easily the best launch game ever.

The DualSense is leagues better than DS4, it feels sturdier and has way better battery life. I have played several hours now and I'm only down one bar. The adaptive triggers is a mixed bag. So far it's been feeling like normal rumble. A little bit more resistance in blocking and partying, but not a game changer. Maybe it's just poorly implemented in Demon's Souls. Gonna play Astrobot and see what the deal is.

Implementation in Demon's isn't ground breaking. That game is fantastic in every other way though. Try going for performance rather than resolution. There is very little in it and 60fps makes a big difference in combat for me.

It's fantastic indeed. Yes, I've switched to performance. I could barely see a difference in visual anyway but the gameplay is definitely a step up and very smooth. Locked 60, haven't encountered a frame drop yet. It's nice that you can choose preferences in the UI, either performance or resolution.

Can you just leave 2 external USB drives plugged in and just switch back and forth like PS4?

just not being able to use them at the same time I mean

I believe only one external HD can be recognized by the system

One thing I really appreciate with Sony and their first party games is that they translate the games to Swedish. To my knowledge, neither Nintendo or Microsoft bothers with this since most us living here are fluent in English. Translation is much more common in European countries where English is not so prevalent such as France, Germany and Spain. Sony could just not do it, since Sweden is a small country, but the fact that they are doing this, and with very good results too, I believe they take our market very serious.

And even if I'm fluent In English in both writing and speaking, it's so much more comfortable and easy to follow plots and descriptions without having to translate myself. It's especially nice in games such as Bloodborne and Demon's Souls, where you have to piece together the clues and dots to follow the plot.

It's another small, but significant perk in why I favor Sony before the other competitors.

Instead of actually doing a "proper anal-y-sis" thermal paste vs liquid metal ... he decided to unplug the fans, to see if any of the two PS5 would overheat. NO SHIT!

both PS5 overheated

He then plugged the fans back in and measured the noise and heat exhaust. Basically the thermal paste PS5 was alot louder and blowing out less heat.

Found my first annoying thing with the PS5. It randomly loses connection to the internet and I have to restart the system to connect again. Been trying to download Days Gone now on three separate occasions due to loss of connection and even been kicked out from Demon's Souls server too a couple of times. I have a wi-fi repeater to strengthen the signal and yet the PS5 loses it. Had the same issue with PS4 but at least it reconnected itself after a minute or two.

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.
I’ve never worked out why sometimes when I turn it on it says ‘logged into your PS5’ and other times the message doesn’t appear but just the battery level on the joypad.

I'm starting to get the idea of DualSense now. Playing some No Man's Sky (looks absolutely gorgeous with the next gen patch) and they've implemented resistant triggers when shooting and taking off. It feels good, adds to the immersion. I hope developers experiments with different scenarios for the controller. Could be a game changer if utilized correctly.

The loading times are by far the best thing with PS5. It was my number one most "looked forward too"-feature and it delivers accordingly. Playing Demon's is so smooth, jumping to and from archstones. When you die, it instantly reloads. When I quit the game, just jump back in with an activity card. Even a cold boot is super fast. And this is just the start of the gen. Fucking love it

It's a night and day difference over Bloodborne on PS4 Day One. Massive qualitative difference that affects the enjoyment of it after repeated deaths. In that sense, fuck last-gen.

Indeed. I tried some Bloodborne but it was hard going back. Looked very rough and I absolutely adore that game. It needs a patch asap. I don't think I can ever go back now that I got a taste of the benefits of next gen. It's just too many QOL features enhancing the experience.

I will have mine in january but until then, I am giving my ps4 slim to nephew for christmass. I have the box and everything, He won't even know it's mine hehe... he is 6.
Anyway - how to properly delete my account and clear all data so he launches it and sees all the first pop ups and so on? Will factory reset also remove system updates? (I guess not)
Also - do I need to deactive this ps4 as my main ?

The activity cards are so fucking good. It literally takes 5 seconds from pressing a card to get back to the exact same spot I was in Demon's Souls yesterday. I see a lot of potential for this if used right. So far one of the best QoL features of the PS5.
That's weird, they don't work for me. I can be on the PS5 menu, press the Tower of Latria card, and it just loads the game up normally. It does the cutscene you have to skip, goes to the main menu of the game, and then I have to select continue and I'm placed in the Nexus. It's like the cards don't do anything at all for me.

I'm finally focusing on playing through Last of Us Part 2 right now and man, Naughty Dog can make such well polished games.

The only issue I have with it is that while I want to play it, it's so tense so I have to be in the mood. It was easier playing the first one because it wasn't as long, but this one requires some dedication to it.

I've noticed some games display cards differently depending on if there game is running or not. Spiderman specifically will have a load of trophy cards if it's not running, but specific activity cards with estimated times when it is.

Should there be a Sony / PlayStation Business discussion thread?

Covering the companies Share price, Market Cap, acquisitions and potential acquisitions, quarterly results and fundamentals, management etc and how it all relates back to gaming.

Stock just passed 99.15 dollars per share and 122 Billion market cap and they are just on the verge of being in the top 3 most valuable companies in Japan.

Yeah, that's weird. It always works for me. Did it just now. 3 seconds and boom, in the game. The card points out the place I was when I quit and asks if I want to resume.

It did however not work on No Man's Sky. When I resumed from a card there, the same thing happened like you described it. Logos, main menu, load up save.

So I've spent a lot of time with the PS5 over the weekend. Done a lot of gaming and testing and experimenting to see if all the horror stories you've read on GAF about the issues the PS5 had, was something that was gonna affect me.

Long story short. It didn't. The PS5 has been working great for me. I haven't experienced a single crash or glitch in the games I've played, everything has been running smoothly and safe, and neither I have I encountered rebuilding the database notification either.

The dreaded coil whine is nowhere to be found. The only loud noise the console does, is when inserting a disc in the drive and starting a download (which puts the drive in motion) and it lasts for about 30 seconds. If I put my ear to the top of the console the only thing I hear is the air blowing out. Conclusion is, my PS5 is dead silent. Which is a huge improvement to my PS4 who could get pretty loud sometimes.

Rest mode has also worked correctly. I've charged my devices and downloaded games using it overnight. No issues at all. Backwards compatibility works as intended too. Tried multiple games for several hours and not a single crash or glitch or other funny stuff.

Movies work too. I've watched both blu-ray discs and DVD. No problems there either. I haven't tried 4K UHD yet as I haven't purchased any, but I will try those later on too. Media apps working too.

The only issue I've had, is with the internet connection, which has disconnected a couple of times. But it was only during Saturday, so can't say for sure if it was my router going haywire or the PS5 doing it. Every other day it has worked. I also found out that the download speed is affected when you running apps or watching movies, and can be a cause for disconnection. Further on, I will only download during night when asleep, and when the PS5 is not doing anything else. It seems to work best that way.

Overall, PS5 has been a great system and a huge improvement over PS4. It feels like a really premium device, from the console itself, to the DualSense and the accessories. I love the controller, it has a satisfying weight to it with interesting features that I hope the developers support. Sonys controllers have been my number one complaint, especially DS4 which I hated. So good on Sony for actually improving and evolving the controller.

I'm confident this gen will be something special and that the PS5 will deliver some amazing games and feature over the years. A console built for the future and one that takes full advantage of the foundation that Sony has built over the years, especially with the PS4.

I don't recommend Godfall for 50. It will be far cheaper, or even free, within the next 3 months. I plat'd it, but didn't really enjoy my time all that much.

Dirt 5 for 40 bucks is a deal I might hop on. Am waiting for Sackboy to reach that price too. Just got Immortals for 40 bucks.

The issues with rest mode and games hard crashing the console (which led to the database rebuilds, they were connected) seem to have been cleaned up quite a bit in the last couple system updates. I don't read about them nearly as often and haven't experienced any since the latest update.

I just booted up Ghost of Tsushima from rest mode, running off my external, started up Spotify and am gaming away with no issue.

Just felt the need to point out, however, that these things DID happen, it's not like everyone was lying about crashes. Thankfully it appears to have been pretty much ironed out.

As far as coil whine, I thankfully have never had the issue with mine. I feel bad for those that do.

I'm not saying everybody lies about the issues with PS5, faulty units are to be expected, but this is the Internet after all, and a lot of people have been spreading lots of fud and bs for quite some time. It's only natural you are a bit jaded about stuff like that.

i have coil whine and its absolutely annoying in quieter areas. i hate it. give it a few weeks. mine was silent in the beginning too.

the disc fan drive is also extremely noisy. there is clearly a defect here. i used to hear the pro's disc drive kick in but this is something else. there is something loose in there. no disc drive is this loud. thankfully it wasnt a big deal when watching tenet.

its possible that the first shipment PS5s were built first and had these issues that were later ironed out in production. the disc drive and coil whine noises are awful.

Managed to get a ps5 disc edition from Best Buy, I pick it up on Saturday. Ordered a WD Black 5tb from Amazon today for all of the ps4 games I'm going to play on it while I wait for it to get more games.

I'll probably get a 2nd controller so I can have one charging while I play with one and Miles Morales Ultimate Edition while I'm at Best Buy on Saturday. Demon's Soul's is not my kind of game, I'm too casual for the difficulty. Undecided on if I want to buy Sackboy or not, kind of depends if I can talk my wife into playing it, she doesn't really play games. I will probably get No Man's Sky since it's on sale and I heard how great it looks and plays on ps5.

I bought Dirt 5 now that it's $40 everywhere, and I gotta say what a beautiful looking game. Evolution studios has done it again. Yes, some races look meh and downright ugly, but those same tracks are transformed in the right lighting conditions. Dusk setting in this game with the sun shining through looks photorealistic at times. Rain under cloudy conditions making mud transports me to Motostorm Pacific Rift days. Snow levels with the gorgeous light bounce off of the iced tracks makes everything look like it was lit by ray traced GI. Looks phenomenal. I think it's a cross between driveclub and motorstorm and if you are a fan of either of two those games, you gotta give this game a chance.

They did a great job with the dualsense controls too. The haptics on the triggers feels great, and every once in a while you hit some bump in the road and i swear its like in real life when I go over something when driving. it's rare but its amazing. I actually think they can improve it even further by implementing sound effects coming out of the controller like demon souls. DS added it a few weeks ago and it completely transformed the experience. it's not the entire audio, just bits and pieces and really enhances the experience.

So yes, go buy it. it looks great. it feels great, and above all it plays great.

With that out of the way, lets talk about how fucking broken the image quality mode is in this game. it chugs and stutters like crazy in some turns even if there are no cars on screen. you can be leading the lap and it will stutter and chug for a game 2 seconds which is an eternity in a racing game. these arent framedrops, these are stutters you see on pc games. this is clearly broken and im quite frankly flabbergasted by how this hasnt been fixed. apparently people have been complaining about it since november when this issue was introduced in a patch that added vsync to the PS5 version, and evo hasnt fixed it.

I am tagging NXGamer NXGamer and hoping he covers it even if its for a short 2 minute video. it is simply unacceptable for a game to perform this bad. switching to prioritize resolution mode reduces the framedrops but it still chugs, just not as bad as it does in the image quality mode. only the 120 fps mode seems to work fine but i dont like the cuts they made to the graphics in that mode.

Looks like they just fixed the xbox version, but i hate that it came at the expense of the ps5 version. surely, they shouldve known the game performs awful in some races even if they dont read era or twitter.

I think I went overboard with the accessories. First I bought the charging stand. This is very good, probably the best one of the bunch. Very convenient with two controllers, always ready for a play session.

Then I bought the Pulse 3D Headset. Didn't like it at first, felt uncomfortable around the ears, but as I kept wearing them, I grew to like them. Now I love them and always play with them during evenings and nights. Great sound too, especially in Demon's where you can hear lots of nuances in the sound design. Very atmospheric.

Aaaand then bought the media remote. And this is where I feel I should've known better and held off a purchase. It's really not necessary, it's limited in options and since I mostly use apps on the TV, the remote feels kinda redundant. I had an idea where I wanted to use the PS5 as a media hub, but Spotify and Netflix are not very good on PS5. Maybe they'll fix it on a future patch. The apps are also limited whereas on my TV I have access to all of them. I do watch a lot of movies so maybe the remote comes in handy there.
