The guy who leaked "a big Microsoft acquisition" would happen before Zenimax announcement said there are 2 more like that.

Sega and KojiPro.

Yeah, instead we got "Series X won't be held back by Xbox One", which was just as much of a lie.

Lol, wut?

Is this a joke? Or satire?

He's great at MAKING promises, I'll give him that.

Still buying meaningless press, I see.

At this point his personal brand is stronger than that of the console division he runs.

I don't understand how but alright

Is it a joke? Has to be right?

He reminds me of the smarmy bootlicker corporate lackeys I work with. He smiles so hard when he panders (i.e. 24/7) his face is starting to look like it's gonna melt. Meanwhile the Sony guy reminds me of the salty old corporate managers I work with.

edit: Post-Iwata Nintendo has become like that too. Very corporate. I second what @Danjin44 wrote above.

First console launch with zero first party exclusive. Something to be proud of I guess.

It's wild, there is a chance that MS is going to drop another 5 or 10 billion into buying up more publishers/devs before they ship halo infinite. (A game that got laughed at so hard its delayed by a year)

The mismanagement of this company is legendary when it comes to gaming. It's unbelievable, and they are hungry for more stuff to aquire.

Jesus fucking Christ, glad I'm not a fan of modern gaming, a shake up is needed. May god have mercy on those effected. Sleepless nights ahead for every fanboy.

For all the people upset about this choice, which there seems to be a lot of.

Who would you have put in that place instead?

I see a lot of whining about the “winner“ but no choices for alternatives.

Lisa Su, singlehandedly turned AMD around in 5 years from the brink of extinction.
Jim Ryan, headed up a wildly successful year for playstation, delivering multiple chart toppers.
"The gamers" as this has been a banner year for games and game streaming across the board (no thanks to Phil Spencer btw, since Mixer was cancelled)
Furukawa or whoever is CEO of Nintendo for continued massive success of the switch.

There are plenty of options besides a dude who habitually oversells and underdelivers.

I’m sure they were both considered.

For some reason or another Phil beat them both out though.

Xcloud is a success.

There's a lot of receny bias in the article and i think the key takeaway is this:

The only missing piece to the Phil Spencer story is games themselves. After years of acquisitions, the cancellation of old projects that were born from the previous regime, the next slate of Xbox games are those that were greenlit under Phil Spencer’s leadership.

The award is being given while acknowledgement of the elephant in the room is take into account. When he inherited Microsoft, it was a mess after Mattrick. He was a violinist going down with the Titanic, who suddenly had to take the bridge when the captain life boated. As he said in a recent article, the xbox brand was treading water and he was forced into a position which was probably a bit bigger in scope than he would have liked. And that was from his passion to not let the brand die. Circumstances were dire, good people stick around in my opinion because of passion, determination and investment. So, do I think there was an element of 'learning as you go' for Phil in certain aspects of heading up a team of this size/scope? Undoubtedly so, which is why Microsoft are playing the slow and steady game. They have the money to go out and moneyhat a lot of stuff to quickly get back on track. But they didn't, as painful and as hard as it was (for fans and MS), they applied a tourniquet and then thought about how to either change the model or disrupt the market.

Don't get me wrong, many of us on here like to purchase a game at retail price, stick it on and play through it. Having said that there is no doubt game pass has been a massive disruption in the market and it has tangible benefits. It has exposure for smaller devs. It makes gaming more affordable and creates a coalescent of a wide userbase immediately. Similar to how Sony gave away Fall Guys on PS+ - that immediately gave it millions of players online. Every title going on gamepass has that benefit. Worried something won't have a large online community (say Streets of Rage 4), doesn't matter because you have 10 million other potential players who just have it added to their library.

Hardware wise - ok, let's just drop the console warrior BS about the odd frame etc - the units are very close, which MS absolutely had to deliver after the Xbox One and they did. Without niggling over detail, the units are pretty much at parity until MS can demonstrate the gap on paper is easily shown on screen. They've added more disruption into the market with the Xbox Series S, for those regions where the latest tech isn't as prevalent/an iteration behind (4K, XSX, PS5, tablets, smartphones) or where people need a softer financial stairway into next generation. They've expanded this further with xCloud for emerging markets as well.

They've spent a lot of time on their clear preservation of games via BC. Not only have they ensured you can play them but they also have committed to features like auto HDR and integrating the Heutchy method which enhances them beyond 'boost' or 'stability'.

There may have been other people in the running, but I don't think there's a strong enough case to take the award away from Phil, equally I'm sure the decision was close. As for overselling, under delivering - everyone in sales/marketing does this. It's impossible to speed up time, but they have bought good talent/studio's and unfortunately we will have to see if these studio's can rival that ubiquitous third person cinematic action/adventure that Sony does so well.

I don't think he deserves this award. Sure XBox fans like him because he can't be blamed for the 2013 debacle and they have high hopes he will lead the brand out of this mess. However he might been indirectly responsible for bad releases or bad handling of development processes (Halo MC, Crackdown 3, Scalebound, Sea of Thieves, Quantum Break). Backwards compatibility was a nice item to have on the score board, sure, but that might be an unexpected engineering success (actually that's how Phil described it himself on stage). Game Pass is nice, but that might have come from the cloud side of things without him, too. As for what Microsoft is doing now - that can be summarized via "spending your way out of a problem". I.e. using Microsoft's corporate advantage by pumping funds into the XBox department that somebody else has earned. I dunno ...

You might have been wrong too.

Well it wasn't going to be Jim or Hermen..... especially after all the departures lately. I can see the new leadership being the least liked in a long time at PlayStation, they have done nothing to ingratiate with the fans.

While Phil has been on almost every gaming site doing interviews and has spent about 10 billion on studios as well as creating excellent PR and spin when needed.

Compared to Jim not spending a penny to secure any new studios, losing staff all over California to The Initiative, Inexile and lately at San Diego Studio and allowing countless gaffes to occur, including the 'We believe in generations', quickly followed by many PS5 games being cross-gen.

Congrats to Phil.

Thoroughly deserved for no other reason than to annoy the cult of Cenry or Cerney or whatever he's called.

Not in the slightest.

He deserved his marching orders after what happened with this launch. Halo not ready and looking shite, XSX 'most powerful console' gets beaten by the '9tf' PS5, tools not ready and he had the worst launch - games wise - of any console in history.

But hey, what a guy eh? I wish i could fuck my job up beyond belief and win awards for it

And before you call me a Sony pony, I'm an xbox fan

Laughable.
The guy is the most over exposed figure in the gaming industry, he constantly says tons of lies or at best half truths with the aim of telling their fanbase what they want to hear and create fake excitement around the brand.
Just this year we have heard gems like:
"Cross gen is about being pro-consumer"
"Cross gen games won't hold back next gen games"
"I feel confident about where we are after Sony's show"
"I've played Halo Infinite and I've really liked what I've seen"
"I don't like exclusive deals"
"I hate console wars but my marketing team is constantly doing just that :messenger_tears_of_joy: "
"We want to build on our hardware advantages and games will play the best on XSX!"
"Sorry if we fucked up with production, the reason is that we waited until late summer for RDNA2 to be ready although we showcased our final AMD SOC back in December 2019".

This is the guy that got the award :messenger_grinning_sweat::messenger_grinning_sweat::messenger_grinning_sweat:

Are these rewards meaningful in any way?

I can see Phil winning just for Gamepass model and the way he's trying to make it a thing. It could be revolutionary - or it can flop in 5 years but it is new and it is not the usual scummy money-grab of MTX/DLC. However the whole transparency and whatever else they chose Phil for that is in the article is not a great reason. Let's be clear - this year he also did a poor job with Series X reveal, didn't deliver day 1 games for the console and in general it was a tame year for Microsoft on the output front.

That dude is so embarrassing and yet some people still buy his bs...
I mean, do you expect him or any other company representative to say anything else? What some people like about him is his strategy and what he is doing with the brand. Of course he’s gonna say positive things in his communication.
That's like Time magazine giving Hitler person of the year that one time.

Convincing Mommy Nutella (or whatever the fuck his name is) to invest 7 billion in studio aquisitions (that will certainly pay off, in time) is a worthy checkmark for the award. I've gotten so much value out of gamepass this last year that I personally agree with the nomination, too.
