Why The Xbox Series X Is 2020’s Biggest Gaming Disappointment

It does feel lackluster as fuck compared to what the Dreamcast was in my mind in 1999 - I mean, going from PS1 stuff to Soul Calibur - damn.... just damn... I felt jealous as fuck that I couldn't get one at the time. In the end I got a PS2 years later and I only got the DC (despite playing it in friend's houses over the years) only in 2009 as a piece of my collection.

The PS2 launch line-up also made me go like "damn, I don't have this, I should be playing this". The Xbox Series X looks like a monster of a machine, very interesting and all, but for the first time I do not feel instantly bad for not having one. Sure, I want one of these new machines because we all end up wanting them when they come out, it's normal, but it's truly lackluster.

3. Don't play shitty GaaS games or ones that require a constant internet connection, and if you do just be sure to back out to the menu before switching

Then it is doing nothing for that game. Either way the game is loading from the SSD, so why bother eating up disk space with a quick resume file?

Well this is true. 100%

And I like my Series X. Glad I got it as a secondary device (PC is main) and Game Pass was a huge reason I picked it up over PS5. But there is no denying it (at launch) acts as a One X with faster load times.

(y)

I don't see this as a negative of the Series X... I just think that this speaks highly of the engineering of the Xbox One X.

It feels to me like Xbox have been on the back foot and tripping over themselves since the end of 7th gen.

They went all in on Kinect, and let the initial hype for that peripheral and the huge success it brought the 360 go to their heads, thinking they could get away with blatantly screwing their customers with the XO's shitty plans and arrogantly sacrificing the consoles gaming capabilities to leverage more ways to get money out of our wallets.

Then the PS4 curb stomped then, and They've been desperately flailing around ever since, hoping that if they scrabble around long enough they'll find something solid sales wise to hold on to.

So they buy studios, cancel some games while releasing others that are a but toss just to have gamepass fillers, create aforementioned subscriptions, make a ridiculously powerful consoles, then make a ridiculously weak one, stoke the fires of console warring then bemoan them, claim to have made the beat unified environment for game development then blame their own tools when the PS5 is slightly better, state they have the most diverse ever line up of games at launch, while every exclusive is delayed, promised in some ever changing vague future date, as well as being either cross gen or coming on PC as well anyway.

It's all a bit slapdash and half the time undermining itself. They're so desperate for a win, that they end up accidentally hobbling themselves.

They need to pick one thing and stuck with it instead of hedging their bets.

Are they platform agnostic and happy for games to release on PC and other consoles, or are they a console platform holder, so need real exclusives?

Are they creating a Netflix like subscript service, needing to crank out lots of small shorter easoly consumable experiences like mobile games, or creating platform selling big, bespoke, block buster exclusives like Sony and Nintendo?

Do they want to have an everyman, casual, low cost, easy to use gaming environment, or a best in class graphical powerhouse for hardcore hobbyists?

Because right now, they're a jack of all trades and master of none, while their competitors know exactly what they are, what they do best, and what their audiences want.

Unless they get their shit together, lose the chaff and commit to something they will do well at, it's got to only be a matter of time before MS get sick of constantly sinking capital into an investment that will never see any returns.

how are people saying it just feels like a better xbox x, its running the same games as the PS5. so is the PS5 just a better PRO?

PS5 is definitely just a better Pro. That's all this generational leap was going to be--just some graphical upgrades with ray tracing etc., more games at 60FPS and so on. PS5 feels a little newer with the Dualsense features, but only time will tell how many games use them well.

We're just at a point were next gen is always just going to mean more of the same with better graphics and performance. At least until there's some huge break through in VR, AR, holograms or whatever that really shifts how we play games. Until then, consoles are basically what PC gaming has always been. Upgrade every few years to keep running new games with better graphics and performance.

Main difference right now is games. PS5 has next gen exclusives in Demon's Souls and Astrobot, crossgen console exclusives in Miles Morales and Sackboy, games like Horizon 2, Ratchet and Clank, GT7, God of War 2 slated for 2021 (doubt all make it out though). With Halo Infinite delayed, MS doesn't even have any new cross gen exclusives for XSX/XSS right now. I don't mind as I haven't played Xbox/Gamepass much the past 3 years or so, but definitely not a ton of reason to buy for someone who has a One X and is caught up on exclusives and Gamepass games. Just a few of those and some third party cross gen games with XSX versions. If I wasn't behind on Xbox One games and Gamepass games in genereal, I'd have waited until Halo Infininte was out to buy an XSX.

i have my x and playing valhalla (the inferior version) when i finish the game i fear this thing its gonna gather dust,i expected third party games at least to be a bit better and both consoles having little ssd space i buyed games on both to distribute space, but with the dual sense and ps5 third party games being better this console is gonna be for microsoft games...maybe in 2022

I feel the same with my PS5. I mean, there's no fucking games to play, what are we supposed to use this for? If the BC worked the same as the XSX that would be amazing, but right now there aren't almost any games updated to use PS5 capabilities, it's just running PS4 pro versions of the game. Don't get me wrong, having 20 games to play is amazing, Sony did the right thing there considering there weren't any games for launch, but they should make the developer's update the games to work with PS5. At least that way we can go back visiting those games and be amazed again.

This.

I mean, even if people like them or not, they have games. And that's what's needed for an upgrade.

I don't feel like I'm missing out anything on Xbox right now having an original One because I can still play Gamepass shit, on lower framerates or resolution, but they're perfectly playable. Why upgrade now if there's no killer app?

First wave are not looking good for Series X

Getting stomped by PS5

Even still lost to Nintendo Switch

The hype for Xbox X isnt big enough ( not generating enough hype)

I still want one, but I agree.

I had a pre order from Gamestop. that they cancelled. PS5 pre order from Walmart survived.

Seems like it was meant to be, because now I'm not really that anxious to get a Series X. I'm more than satisfied. But I got 2+ years of Gamepass I dont want to go to waste.

Meanwhile, Sony will release the likes of Horizon Forbidden West, God of War 2, and Gran Turismo 7 during 2021: all killer apps in their own right, and three more reasons I’ll be getting a PS5 when stock finally returns to stores."
So his biggest excitement on PS5 vs. Series X aren't even existing games or features, but are 3 games that aren't even out yet. And one game is already confirmed cross plat with PS4 (Horizon 2).

Microsoft should've differentiated its UI, the lowest hanging fruit for them, disappointing showdowns against the PS5 is totally another matter.

Phil was recently making an excuse for low sales, relating it to late manufacturing / not enough consoles to ship. I'm a bit skeptical of the basis, but it's entirely possible a late manufacturing start is the cause of low sales. Regardless though, MS needs to get out in front of the enthusiasm for PS5 with more gameplay previews. Promoting leadership changes at a certain studio might also be a public relations win if done right. I'm sure they don't want to give the impression that the game is damaged goods, but they could say the need to delay was unforgivable this time, and they are bringing in new leadership to tighten the ship on reaching deadlines.

Whatever they do, they need to do something different IMO. I don't see a subscription of prior gen games as something that will move the needle very much outside of "core" gamers. And other than that, what hook do they have for the 9-11 months after Xmas? Sure its still new and cutting edge tech, but what will make the kids at school feel like they are missing something by not upgrading?

Oh boy this thread is 👎.
We are in 2 months in a new Gen and we must talk about that. Sry but Sony will not release GOW in 2021 trust me.
And what do you think about Xbox in the Future. No games from 23 Studios🤦‍♂️. Sry it's Fanboy thread not more.
The amount of time Sony diehards spend trashing Xbox for not having any games, leads me to believe the PS5 also doesn't have any games or they would be playing them instead of worrying about Xbox.

People need to get over blaming every negative remark as fanboy nonsense. A message board consisting of only positive topics would fold in a heartbeat. And the premise of this thread is perfectly reasonable and explained. And most people who love gaming would be more than happy to switch eco-systems if there were sufficient benefits.

But it is true xbox series x doesnt have any first party launch game

PS5 : Astro + Demon Souls + Sackboy

Xbox X : Nothing

This is fact and not made up story

Compare X with One launch game : Ryse Son of Rome, Forza Motorsport 5, Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct

That is a huge letdown

Author forgets most people upgrading their Xbox will be upgrading a One S or original Xbox One, if you're coming from those machines to Series X on a 4k HDR HDMI2.1 TV the difference is incredible.
If you owned an Xbox One X which was the best machine last gen then you're already used to 4k but the difference in loading times, the superior backwards compatibility, the controller improvements, Ray Tracing and 120hz are still worthwhile upgrades.

I bought it exactly because it was a "better" Xbox One X. It's the PC upgrade mentality just in the console space, while being a Hell of a lot cheaper. I was originally a PC gamer (circa Amiga days), so iterative hardware--introduced last gen, just made sense and continues to do so.

Kind of agree not much of an upgrade after having an Xbox one x
I kinda agree with you but have you still got your One X.
I got Dirt 5 and Iv'e got a SX, SS and 1X. So I did a quick comparison and lets put it this way 60fps mode even on SS it is a lot better than One X. Not in fps cause they both seem ok. The difference is that on One X the streaming in of scenery was Saturn like Daytona USA in comparison to even the Series S.
It was a just a quick comparison tbh, 1X drops to 1080p FR mode and SS simalar but I plan to look into it more when I got time as non of the comparison sites have compared them.
And I know there's still advantages of 1X over SS but 1X is still a great console.

Yes it's true. You guys have been reminding us for months now. While your concern is very appreciated, it may not be necessary to repeat yourself like you have Tourette's.

XBox One X and Series X owner here. Totally agree with this. The XSX feels like an evolution....so far. The feeling is especially exasperated by the fact that I'm still using my Elite Controller and playing the same games that I was on the One X.

The Playstation 5 feels more next-gen simply because they brought something new to the table in terms of UI and controller. Spiderman was already a feat on the Playstation Pro and manages to look even better somehow.

The XSX (and XSS) may never catch the PS5 in sales but I'm certain that Microsoft's first party games will eventually shine brighter than anything available on the PS5.

However, as a 3rd party developer the console with the most sales will be my benchmark. And that doesn't bode well for Microsoft.

Nobody should be shocked by this.

Only Astro is actually a PS5 exclusive.

If you're counting the likes of Sackboy then you can count upgraded versions of Gears Tactics, Gears 5, Forza Horizon 4 and Halo MCC.
Stop crying warrior. The console war is over and you lost. Public and press have spoken and PS5 is the winner. Series X is betamax in a VHS world. Hold the L.

I have played on my Series X...about 20 hours total. Meanwhile on PC I took advantage of the Autumn Sale and have been completely readdicted to Monster Hunter World. Playing MHW at high frame rates and PC settings is absolutely amazing. I spent the entire Thanksgiving weekend pretty much playing it with some buddies who had never played a Monster Hunter before. So much fun.

Just a thought: if MS never released the OneX, would the article author feel differently? Same with PS4 Pro too I guess - did the mid gen upgrades rob us of the full "leap"?

As a Series X owner I'm with him right now, the lack of titles at launch that leverage the console is frankly ludicrous and Sony's only just better. It's been a crap generation launch, let's face it.

So you don't have an actual point to make, grow up.
Sales charts do my talking for me. Xbox is a disappointment and everybody knows it. World's most powerful console yet can't outperform a PS5. No games except back compat shit you've had for years. Time to eat some crow Riky. PS5 is trending everyday and the most desired consumer electronics product on Earth. The only people I see talk about xbox are butthurt fanboys like yourself.

I'm disappointed with the product MS put out there too. I think it's a complete dud. But it's not just the console, it is the fact that they have literally no games to sell on it. It's so bad... I know they were leaning heavily on 343 to deliver with Halo Infinite, but it says a lot that they were leaning heavily on 343 to deliver with Halo Infinite.

They need to turn it around ASAP because Sony looks like they are planning a massive 2021.

Without the games how can you tell if it's a dud?

I think calling it Gaming’s Biggest Disappointment of 2020 is hyperbolic the author lays out all the reasons I sold mine and went all in on a PS5....

Didn’t think the “sameness” feel would hit me hard and I was wrong, hit me way harder than I thought.....

PS5 has games PS4 doesn't, it also has a vastly revamped controller (another selling point to differentiate the systems). They're similar but right now the PS5 is a clear upgrade to PS4Pro, you can't say the same with XSeX.

Yeah but only 1 or 2 and the other games are cross gen, yes the controller is nice but the controller needed a revamp. The haptics are very cool i will agree there. Until we get a year into the new consoles both are just upgrade of the pro/X at the moment

Yep. Like I said, it's worth it for me as I don't have an Xbox one and won't upgrade my PC as I just didn't like gaming on it much. I wanted a Gamepass box as there are several games on there I want to play and next year is looking pretty thin for me in terms of new releases I care to play. If I had an Xbox One, I'd just do Gamepass on that until Halo Infinite and other games were out.

I agree it’s Microsoft’s attempt to pivot to the Tim Cook Apple or PC model. I fully expect a repeat of the One X and in a way that’s fine.

That said PS5 only really does feel next gen due to Astrobot and Dual Sense so it’s kind of baffling MS didn’t have a backup plan to Infinite to showcase the console. Hell Rare could have made Perfect Dark or Kameo Remastered with full on ray tracing and 60fps and it would have been a great launch title.

One thing i think is great about the series X is the smooth upgrade from my X to the series X, games upgraded and can store my series X games on my HDD so i can save space on SSD. Also instant resume is also great. There are lots to look forward to on both consoles

Its been a few weeks since launch and really both systems feel like they have no hype around them. Scarcity and scalper stories is really the big thing now.

Wow you can play AC or Watch Dogs at 60 FPS, here is my 500$.

By the time these systems get going they will both be telling us to buy the pro versions to get the full 4K and full 60 FPS.
