I'm going to say there's really only the narrative type of plot in Hades. I guess there's Aphrodite, but I don't recall much else.

That is a damn shame. Not all games can have it all though. As long as the gameplay delivers or they have charm/characters I give a fuck about I can't really complain.

BOTW trivia quiz...
14/16

Missed the mask question, and the last question about the Master Sword. Should have definitely answered the mask question correctly. There were no trivia games or trials of any sort in BOTW now that I think of it....There was that Sphinx in Super Mario Odyssey though lol

BOTW trivia quiz...

13 out of 16. Genuinely thought the mask was called something else, the shrine name is almost impossible, lol, and I don’t know that I ever got the Master Sword up to max level.

Wait then the wrong shrine name was some nerdy Star Trek thing? Oh, bite me. 14 out of 16, then.

It’s weird we’d suddenly get a quiz. I spent hours playing BotW tonight. It’s kind of funny, at first, because the two games look and act so similarly, it’s like, ‘It’s not a Musou? I can go anywhere and do anything?’. Lol.

I love the headspace it puts me in. Just this super relaxed, chill, but adventurous and fun mood, that’s like nothing else. But there’s always something somber, something sad, and not quite right, which I think is a brilliant example of communicating story through gameplay.

That’s kind of BotW in general. We’ve gotten so used to interactivity, being part of a story, and player choice in games being an illusion. Even if it’s supposed to be an ‘open world’. There are partial exceptions but most games play out like movie scripts, even the best ones. Everything about BotW, on the contrary, is so real, so raw. Nothing ever happens because of a tight script. It happens because there are countless elements in the world, all packed together, and allowed to interact naturally.

I think I totally get why I like it so much now. BotW isn’t revolutionary because it lets you climb anything, or one of the thousand great ideas it has. It’s revolutionary because it combines them into a whole that fulfills the original promise of videogames, before we settled — that it’s you in there, making choices, interacting with everything, and being a true part of that world, affecting it as much as it affects you.

I couldn’t pick when the Gaf GotG pitted Odyssey against BotW, but now I can. Odyssey is brilliant, but BotW shows us how games can be more.

Some random thoughts and speculation about a potential Switch Pro (I prefer Switch Plus):

So I've been looking around and trying to find out what kind of Tegra chip a Switch Plus would use. It seems most people settled on it using the Xavier chipset long ago. The current Switch utilizes a downclocked X1 chip.

I have been trying to find products that currently use the Tegra Xavier (released in Q1 2018) and have had no luck. Even the updated Nvidia Shield from 2019 is still using the X1.

What I have found are new dev kits for the Xavier line being released (Q1 2020), which seem to cost about the same (~$600) as the X1 dev kits that were released a little over a year before the Switch's release.

Xavier is exciting because it basically doubles the specs of the X1 in most ways. It could potentially increase Switch resolutions from 900p30 fps to stable 1080p30, and it looks like there's potential for DLSS 4k upscaling based on Nvidia's job openings from around a year ago.

I'm really beginning to think Switch Plus is coming soon, maybe as early as March 2021, and that they've been sitting on the Xavier line of chips for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the big reveal in Nintendo's January Direct.

Had my sisters kids over yesterday and decided to pull out the Labo kits that I got for cheap awhile ago. Wasn't sure what to expect after making the fishing pole last time, but the car game is just ridiculous in comparison. They loved driving around in a huge open area doing objectives. The game is hardly mind blowing, but its amazing how clever they are with just some cardboard and stickers.

I think March 2021 is a good shout. If it happens, it will definitely come at the end of a financial quarter with little lead time from reveal to release so as not to hamper current model sales.

Couple of other things - Nintendo apparently signed a deal with a Taiwanese company to produce new screens for a portable device coming "in 2021". No source from me - it's second hand from my friend who lives in Taiwan, was reported in the local media a couple of months ago. Grain of salt and all that. Secondly, Nintendo's console sales target for this FY was increased to 24 million. That is the highest number since the console launched. I think COVID and Animal Crossing likely have a lot to do with that, but it could also hint at them having something to drop in Q4. There hasn't been a *huge* game dropped this financial year bar the Mario remake, but the console has been powering along.

My personal take is that now the Big Boys have dropped, and Nintendo have a wider gap to them (not that it ultimately matters, different market / target audience etc), a new chip which is slightly more powerful would be a good way to bridge that gap a little. DLSS is the ace in the hole that could make it seem even closer and provide a markedly better user-experience on the Switch in terms of visuals and frame rates.

I want to see Switch with a 4K home screen more than anything, purely because it would leave MS stuck in 1080p land, and THAT would be kinda funny for the Most powerful console Xbox ever.

I think the timing is the big thing. They would give this holiday to the new consoles, and then hit back hard with a 4k console of their own.

I also feel like we're overdue for BotW2 and Odyssey 2, since those games will be reusing the same engines. If they hit back with 4k Switch and a couple huge releases, it would really stand out from the lack of new games on PS5/XSX.

I absolutely agree. It's kinda ironic that Nintendo basically sent both Bethesda and Rockstar back to school with BoTW and how its open-world is an integral part of the game design.

All these SE ports and none of them are FF 1-6... Also not a big fan of old sprites + “HD” effects look that so many of these rereleases have.

That long of a post to arrive at such an obvious conclusion?

All jokes aside, you are right. Breath of the Wild does a fantastic job of capturing this relaxing yet somber almost melancholy feeling of being alone. You are the traveling hero alone in the wild going from adventure to adventure. It has an almost Western like feeling, you are the cowboy that rides into town, gets into some small adventure, and then rides away towards the next town.

I also think that’s why story works so well actually. You’re the honest cowboy with no memory of his past. As you learn new pieces of information you resolve to save not just the princess but a girl that you learn through the flashbacks was in love with you. Your motivation moves from being that of the good cowboy seeking justice to saving the girl that cares for you. It actually turns that lonely traveler in the wilds feeling around because you realize you’ve been to all of these places before with Zelda. Which raises the question: does the loneliness come from the wild itself or the absence of her?

Nintendo has always played around with a romantic story between Link and Zelda but BOTW actually made it a core part of the story. Zelda was not some stoic, distant character but rather one that was familiar and displayed a range of emotions and vulnerabilities in front of Link. The flashbacks with Zelda and Link show how she grows to care for him. Like the endangered Silent Princess, Zelda can only find her own strength and feelings out in the wild. The Silent Princess brings life and beauty to the wild and so does Zelda to Link’s journey in the wild. It’s not just somber feeling of a lonesome hero’s journey but the absence of Zelda, a companion, that makes the far reaches of the wild feel lonely. It’s quite clever and somewhat mature for a Zelda game.

I wonder how they will incorporate their relationship and the idea of journeying across Hyrule together into the next game? The trailer showed the two of them traveling together picking up on the idea that their place is in the wild, exploring. Will the game choose to let you travel together or will it separate you in order to maintain that excellent sense of freedom and agency that the first game had?

I also think that if Nintendo could weave together the lonesome hero elements of BOTW with the political warring kingdom elements of Fire Emblem they could do an interesting traveling Samurai title. Perhaps a new Mysterious Murasame Castle?

That was longer than planned...I retract my joke about the length of your post now.

After playing a bunch of Hyrule Warriors, I got the itch to play Breath of the Wild again. I had the same feeling as you. Breath of the Wild is such a refreshing game. I think Nintendo’s term for it is a good one, “Open Air”. I really wish Nintendo would’ve done something grander with the DLC. The shrines are fine, but I don’t think that’s where the game is at it’s best. The exploration and open-endedness of adventure was where the magic was in Breath of the Wild.

I plan to start a Master Mode play through before the next game. The little bit of Age of Calamity that I have played has already made me want to start. Going for 100% - korok seeds.

I’d pay full price for Final Fantasy 1 through 6 remakes (or remasters) in the Octopath Traveler art style. Actually, I’d pay good money for PSP-styles remasters of those sprite-based Final Fantasy games.

Maybe I just want Final Fantasy games on the Switch?

Nintendo and Square are sitting on a gold mine with their back catalogs. I don’t see why Square doesn’t have all of their old titles available across Xbox/PS/Switch/PC.

I’m also bothered by the fact that the Trials of Mana remake is on PS and Switch but the Secret of Mana remake is PS only. I don’t own either but I hate it when part of a series is available on one console and part is on another.

I'm yet to play Trials of Mana, but Secret of Mana remake on Switch seems like a no brainer. Despite all the criticism it got, it's a very good way to play the game as it streamlines a lot of issues with the original game.

Starting my first Galaxy session today but before I jumped into Galaxy I decided to play some Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online to get me in the Nintendo mood.

I've been playing my PS5 all week, primarily Demon's Souls and GT Sport, and while I do love my PS5 there is just something absolutely magical about Nintendo games. As soon as I started playing I just had this huge grin on my face and warm feeling inside :messenger_beaming:

Woop, only 11 out of 16, and I just finished the game. I missed ones related to the max level of the master sword, name of the shrine that doesn't appear, Lord of the Mtn., name of the elephant beastie, # of korok seeds.
9/16 Look at me failing tests again like I'm back in school.

General question for multi-console owners: Seems like NintendoGAF tends towards physical games. Are you physical or digital for each console?

I am 100% digital on Xbox, PS, and Switch. Used to be physical on Switch but sold all of my games and bought them digitally.

100% digital on Xbox because of Game Pass (and Series S) and the fact that games from any other publisher than Nintendo don’t hold their value at all.

~95% physical on Switch, there are only a few indie titles that I got digital for obvious reasons.

I kinda miss the old days when you bought a PC game in an oversized cardboard box...
