Then I smell another upgrade :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I know consoles have different architecture but how many ram in total are we talking about?

Well, Microsoft designed 10 GBs of the Xbox Series X's 16 GBs of GDDR6X to run faster than the remaining 6 GBs and call it GPU Optimal Memory, because they believe that 10 GBs of VRAM will be requisite for high-fidelity graphics according to the standards of the next generation of games. So, if PC wants to run games with higher quality rasterized elements than the Xbox Series X, then it'll need more than 10 GBs of VRAM.

Anyone used Alternate.be or .nl? Just ordered a Gigabyte 3080 Vision OC which was showing as instock - but it sends the order for them to provide a quote. Now the items show "Pre-order"

That's not how it works.

LinusTechTips posted an "hilarious" video today, building the "fastest gaming PC in the world". The catch? It's the fastest wink wink TODAY wink wink.

Not subtle at all.
The fastest processor in the world, "today", the 10900K.
The VGA is one RTX 3090.
I can see "Tom Cruise jumping on couches" levels of satisfaction tomorrow at AMD.

Honest question: what's the difference between OC and non-OC version of these cards? Technically anyone can manually overclock them so why they offer a "premium" option?

Nice!
Factory OC's tend to be more stable as they may get better binned cards for the purpose of overclocking. You can always do a manual OC but you are kind of always running the silicon lottery for what clocks it can actually hold stable. If you get a decent 3rd party card with adequate cooling, it more than likely can hold a better clock speed for longer without issues.

If you get a factory OC, it should ideally hold that clock speed for the entirety of the card. If you get just a regular card, it may clock up or even higher than the factory OC, but it may not hold that OC for very long, again, unless you have great cooling on the card.

Finally got my Asus 3080 TUF Non-OC card and have been benchmarking it for a couple of days. Didn't go for overclock but instead undervolted and it's amazing. Temperatures are 58-59 degrees even in RDR2 after 2 hours of gaming session with zero fan noise. Additionally, I increased the results with undervolting anyway, so no need to push the card and generate additional heat since it's literally inaudible. Never used such a silent card before, it literally seems like has an AIO on it.

Here are the results of my benchmarking. It was initially Stock vs. 0.925mv/1950Mhz+500 Memory comparison but I decreased it for 0.925mv/1920Mhz since Metro Exodus was not stable with 50 consecutive benchmark session. It failed on 46th attempt twice and I said f* it since I was tired of benchmarking and it made no difference in real world gaming performance. 15-30Mhz and +500 Memory nearly only increase the synthetic results and the new score is 18130 for Time Spy with 0.925mV/1920 curve. Gaming performance is identical with 1950Mhz/500 Memory and couple FPS better than stock.

Poor 3080 has been running like a champ, but I can tell it's being bottlenecked. Just wrapped up placing orders for replacement....everything. New case, mobo, ram, ssd, psupply, cooler, etc. coming over the next week and a half. Now just waiting for the new Ryzen 9 59xx to drop so I can get one of them, too. Lord, this is turning out to be an expensive early Christmas present to myself.

That new Ryzen 9 is looking so delicious. Looking forward to seeing your full build. What case did you get?

I'm not a fan of LEDs and seeing the insides of my computer, so finding something decent that didn't have a window built into it was kind of a bitch. Lol I ended up going with this, since it seemed roomy inside, was fairly configurable, and had a nice, understated brushed aluminum look to it that I liked.

How is 200 extra dollars worth it for 2 frames extra ? Seriously man. The difference in framerates is so minuscule between these cards, its nothing really. They all have the same chip. The performance is in the ballpark for all of them

Well, here in Europe the difference is not that much, and as I already stated before, the premium AIB cards provide better performance (above 2 fps) while running cooler and quieter.

It’s up to the customers to decide if sticking with the base model or paying the extra for a better custom card, which are indeed better than the FE, it’s a fact.

Could you provide me with at least 3 different sources where the difference is higher than 5% from the FE card ?

Its just not there man. The entire thing with this particular release was how maxed out everything is. That there is virtually no difference between manufacturers. The partner cards have better thermals, thats it. Basically what this means is get the cheapest 3080 that you can and you'll be in the same ballpark of performance as everyone else. Not worth substantially more money because you're not getting extra performance.

Great looking case. I like the size. I'd be curious to see how airflow and what temps you'll get when it's all said and done. Keep us posted?

Thanks - super excited. Only concern was my card is on the long side, but it seems like it should fit fine even with case fans. Airflow should be good, but will share how it all performs together when finished. (y)

I picked up an FE card because it’s the only one I could (#1 reason for anyone), it’s small, and it’s cheap. Having a slightly better GPU is good but when the new generation comes, I’d rather have the extra $150 or $200 or whatever from buying the 3080 FE. No big performance leap for my use. Maybe others might want to push their PC harder and the price difference is worth it. I can understand that. My preference, though, is never future proof. Just buy what you want today and wait for tomorrow because it’ll always be cheaper and better. If you want 5% more today at a higher cost, that’s totally cool.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
I really don't know what to do, try and get a 3080 or for the first time in my life go with AMD (thinking of 6900 XT).
I need a new MOBO & CPU as well (I am on i7 4790K).
Obviously the thing to do is wait for reviews and judge for yourself. You probably won't have a choice anyway.

This is false. EVGA's FTW3 cards can be flashed with an alternate BIOS that enables the maximum power draw to be increased to 450 watts, which increases the frequencies to which they can be overclocked and the stability of their overclocks.

I just got the xl version, totally recommended and there is really plenty of space.

Meh, you need some proper liquid cooling to squeeze it properly, otherwise you are going to hit other limits. I have that bios, it doesn't make almost any difference, once you hit a certain temp the frequencies are cut. Of course you can see some 2100 MHz for a couple of seconds but that's it.

Yes, you're correct about the need for water cooling, but the RX 6000 Series cards will need water cooling to hit higher clocks as well; the RX 6900XT has a TDP of 300 watts by default, which is still pretty high.

Also, my RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra Gaming frequently hits 1965MHz at stock settings, which isn't too far off from 2000MHz.

I am not comparing the two series here, we'll see what happens as soon as the tests for the AMDs are out. Anyway I think this chip has been already pushed to its boundaries, the only thing that'll help is a refresh, which will most likely come out next year around april or may. Regarding the frequencies, I went for 1995 @0.9V, the fluctuations are minimal and perfs are good, but doing 70MHz more would give me some extra frames which are extremely precious from my point ov view. Unfortunately the card gets very hot at high resolutions, therefore I cannot enjoy those extra mhz.

If there's a 3080ti, it will most likely go head to head vs 6900xt at the 999 dollar price range. This would also make 3090 pointless so I would think they would bring out 3090ti to replace standard 3090 and it would be 10% stronger than 3080ti/6900xt.

I have the Define 7 also with the dark tempered glass window... very sexy. I'm in the same boat as you, been waiting to update this 5820k for years now.

For any fellow EVGA owners, and maybe other 30xx peeps, it looks like the latest NV driver might've borked up people's fan curves. For me, it's causing 2 out of the 3 fans to run ~20% slower than what I define in Precision X or Afterburner. Just something to be aware of as I only just noticed my card was running hotter than I expected.

Exactly the same here. I think Metro Exodus is very underwhelming overall, even at 4k. Shit animation and faces, geometry, and don't even get me started on the textures. Some are very low resolution, blocky and look like shit really. The trees, plants and other foliage is laughably bad. I thought people praised this game for looking good? It really, really doesn't even if I crank up every setting to the max. They're just no smoothness, every object kinda sticks out? Don't know how to explain it. It looks like as with or without DLSS at any resolution..

Also, the gameplay is kind of boring to me, and the storytelling is just.. Bad. Everything feels dated and archaic, but it's probably just not my kind of genre/game.

But Control - holy shit what a gorgeous game. Smooth, pleasant, extremely impressive raytracing and runs like butter with DLSS. Great animation and pretty good faces as well, even if it doesn't come close to TLOU2 in my opinion.

Seems fun too! 🙂 Much more up my alley.
You are a crazy person. Metro Exodus is one of the best immersive sims ever made and one of the best games released in it's year. Play it on a harder difficulty where the world is actually dangerous...It's a blast.

Yeah, that's certainly an opinion that one can have 🙂 - I just don't share it with you. To me the game feels dated, boring and with really bad storytelling. I just can't get into it.

Thanks for posting this! I got my MSI 3080 Gaming X Trio, and it runs so much warmer than your Asus! I have a Phanteks P600S case with 6 case fans, and I'm hitting 75C just running Time Spy. The card itself is extremely quiet (perhaps trading a little more heat for reduced noise), but your temps are so much lower it's hilarious.

This will probably be the first time I tweak my GPU. I always just threw it in there. I hear undervolting the 3080 FE is a great approach. Does anyone have any recommended tutorials?

So I got my replacement 3090fe from nvidia. The coil whine issue is all but mitigated so I'm happy there. But holy shit the default fan curve is aggressive. I'm playing Control right now and the temp is 158 degrees and the fans are running at 68% which seems a tad much. But I know if I set a custom fan curve in afterburner I lose the idle 0rpm mode.

I'm not super concerned about that but I don't really know what my fan curve should be besides just simply limiting how fast it runs at the highest point.

That seems about normal to me.

158 degrees? I hope that's in Fahrenheit 😅

My biggest issue with the 3080 and all Nvidia cards at the moment.... What is the actual price for each card?

Sounds silly, but there's no RRP in the UK even on official sites. Sites are price gouging so what should be a £650 card (3080) is showing as £750-800. This isn't a scalper on eBay; this is a genuine store.

I ordered an Asus ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3080 Overclock Edition 10 GB GDDR6X and it cost me £910 - no idea if that is a rip-off as when I google the prices, there is no site which says "the RRP is £xxx.xx".

Overclockers say that the reason for the price change is Brexit and the exchange rate (load of rubbish - otherwise EVERY item not made in the UK would have this issue).
