WItcher 3 is underrated and rich. I couldn't stop admiring Geralt doing all these animation in every cutscene where he puts his hand out after every sentence. It's amazing, had to force myself to take breaks. Combat is very impactful as well.

BOTW is overrated and bloated. I got tired watching Link do the same animation for every cutscene where he puts his hand out after every sentence. Its jarring, had to force myself to finish the slug fest. Combat is very bland as well.

No way I could reduce this to a single title, there are so many aspects for a title to excel in that picking one would only make sense if some other virtue was being ignored.
Off the top of my head:
Bloodborne (Design, gameplay, atmosphere. Just a fantastic game)
God Of War (Technical masterclass, perfect density of content -which is super hard to achieve from a design perspective)
Nier: Automata (Clever, crazy, Yoko Taro is my design hero!)
Rime (A game of rare emotional intelligence, a true gem.)
Days Gone (Big, dumb fun. I just loved it, this gen's Dragon's Dogma for me)
Death Stranding (There's nothing quite like it, and its immaculate as ever for a Kojima joint)
Nioh/Nioh2 (Got more fun out of these games than anything else this gen. Super value, and made From's output seem lazy to me)

I think it'd be a pretty flawed result if such a specialised, inaccessible title (it's incredibly difficult, right?) win game of the generation.. it should be measuring overall appeal to the broadest range of gamers.. in which case it would seem that Zelda would be the winner~ anyway I'm surprised mgsv made it this far, though i love it hugely, and I'm surprised the flamers haven't derailed Witcher 3.. anyway, this poll is more about which gamer subculture is most active on NeoGAF.. it'll be interesting to see if the Witcher hater clique are more than the people who appreciate it for the incredible game it was at release - and to some extent remains~ anyway just my opinion~ I'll vote Witcher 3, mgs 5, zelda if it reaches the final.

Had a lot of fun with DS when it landed on PC, but the combat stuff is a complete ass and the inventory management could do with some major refinement (stuff like having to arm yourself with a different grenade pack in a firefight was absurd, just auto-use) Very much enjoyed the other aspects though building out roads and zipline networks = super satisfying for sure

Those are sales figures from years ago. But the game has been on ps plus more than once, I think estimates put it north of 10+ million players.

Yeah but I think the original argument was that Bloodborne is a 'specialist' game because a very small percentage of players can actually beat it and therefore probably not the best candidate for game of the generation.

Uh, I'm pretty sure a lot of people didn't finish witcher 3 either.
At-least a third seem to finish BB, I'd say that's pretty good.

Sekiro is one of my favourite games this generation and I didn't get anywhere near to beating it, despite putting over 40 hours into it lol

I think your perspective on this contest isn't a correct one because this is just a - very - entertaining game, and it is fundamentally subjective. Taking it seriously is silly. Besides, NeoGAF is 75% Sony fanboys & enthusiasts. And i suspect that in that cesspool of fanboys quite a few are still bitter over 2015.
I have no idea whether or not The Witcher 3's ridiculously huge market awareness and reach will triumph over Bloodborne on this forum. I suspect that Bloodborne will win.

As it should be. Ori's one of the most overrated platformers in years (beaten only by Odyssey I think).
The real crime is no Hat in Time. I love the hell out of that game. In a year as stacked as 2017, it was vying for the top spot for favorite game although I think Breath of the Wild wins out in the end for me.
I've actually been kinda confused about it and decided to look into this on a whim. A Hat in Time has a 98% positive upvote on Steam based on over 25k votes; Ori has 96% based on 31k. Clearly allot of people have played it and like it but I don't see it brought up in allot of these discussions. Hell, Era made a list of top 100 platformers and Hat didn't show up at all.

Waaaaaaay more. People forget that Bloodborne was free to forty million PS Plus subscribers for a month in 2018. And it’s one PS Plus’s biggest downloaded titles that isn’t CoD or Destiny.

For me Kos and ishin were unbeatable.
Ringed city I finished 100% since the customization of souls allows me to find my style
As good as Mario Odyssey was when it release, I don't think it's aged well in terms of appreciations. If anything it's become a very flawed and maybe forgettable experience? Can't say the same for Zelda BOW. The game seems to have stood the test of time. Not saying either of these are games of the Generation, But Zelda could be in the discussion.

I was so confident that it was going to be bloodborne vs botw for the final showdown. I was thinking I wouldn't be able to vote because I thought they were both perfect games. Now that witcher is going to win it's going to be much easier.
