Nintendo Switch sets new record as best-selling console in the U.S. for 22 consecutive months

"We heard earlier today that Switch was again the best-selling console in the United States. That piece of information was more important than initially thought, as the system has set a new record.

Following what took place in September, Switch has been the best-selling console in the U.S. since December 2018. That marks 22 consecutive months that this has happened, and a new record has been set. The Xbox 360 previous held the record with 21 consecutive months, which took place between August 2011 and April 2013.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Switch isnt console, technically.

It is handheld-tv-out-"console" hybrid and also handheld (lite)

Imo it is not logical to compare that into real home consoles, real as in permanently connected to tv.
We don't need to be so picky. By that metric Xbox and PS aren't consoles either, they're simplified PCs.

Isn't Nintendo expecting to ship/produce 30 million this year? I don't remember the last time I heard a console shipping that much in a year, if ever.

Why? So the PS4 and XB1 sales look less bad in comparison?

Switch is in the same price range as a base PS4/XB1.
Console price, console priced games, console priced accessories, console add-ons, meant and used as a hybrid...etc.

The only logical comparison is to consoles (and if we're talking records based on dollar sales, then you can compare it to anything you want).

Spectacular. Congrats to them. Looking forward to them iterating on it.
Yeah, I wonder if the next device will be a Switch 2 or a new idea. You'd imagine it would be a Switch 2, but I'm not sure when it comes to Nintendo, they're unpredictable and that's partly why I like them.

I think they can make a really awesome Switch 2, especially with the level of confidence Switch gave them, and of course the available tech that they can leverage.

Great comeback for Nintendo since the Wii U.

Now I need them to make decent ports of and bring over Zelda WW, TW, OOT and MM and Luigi’s mansion 1

Plus Pikmin 4
But Wasn’t impressed with Pikmin 3 and Mario ports

“Doesn’t count not a console.”

lolok, I’m sure the shareholders care. I probably play my Switch 85% on TV
For the first 2 and a half years I played it 100% on a TV.

Even my sister the "casual" has never used it in handheld.

But I think when it comes down to it, the only thing that really matters is where it and everything related to it falls in terms of price brackets. but really you could compare anything you want with anything else you want in this case because the record is based on dollar sales.

Uh. What?

Regardless good for Nintendo. I’d say the switch is probably the best console to come out in a long time - even if the flow of great games has slowed down considerably since its first year.

It can be used as a non handheld device so your description is incomplete and inaccurate.
Okay, you can't see this point of view for some reason. Does it need further explanation for you to understand why some people think it's a better comparison?

Do you believe it'll somehow devalue its accomplishments? Because it won't.

You can make a case for the Switch Lite to be separated but not the regular one. Wouldn't change anything for the position since it would be on top too.

I think it’s a bit of a weird comparison. I never viewed the switch as like more like a Nintendo DS than a PS4 or Xbox. Seems more like a fully-fledged console with an extra feature that you can make it handheld. And the price doesn’t reflect it being in a handheld category imo. But I guess it’s all subjective.

It is subjective. Most of my Switch time has been on the TV, as I don't particularly enjoy using a "bulky handheld." To me, it's a console that can become mobile. I imagine it's the opposite for others, but that's the point of a hybrid. The Switch Lite is a pure handheld, so they ARE offering that experience too.

Nintendo isn't perfect. The joy-con issue is indefensible. But, this is a company that released explosively popular fitness (Ring Fit) and life sim (Animal Crossing) games that would end up helping many people get through a pandemic lockdown. Lucky timing, sure, but Nintendo deserves a lot of respect for having products available that are perfect for people's changing needs. The Switch is a brilliant success.

I really REALLY hope the next iteration of this thing is essentially a much more powerful, backwards compatible Switch 2.

They've completely hit their form factor on the head and I love mine. I don't want any other style from Nintendo in the future, just keep making better versions of this and more great games.

Switch is good. I was traveling for two weeks and took it with me to play Mario Kart at night in the hotel. I have a powered USB-C hub so that I can connect it to the tv in the hotel without having to use the dock. It's great. So versatile.

this is absolutely crazy...
I believe I speak for 99% of people on here and in general when I say... no one saw this coming when they first revealed this system.

I expected it to do better than the Wii U and maybe even be only slightly below the 3DS at best... BUT THIS? this is absolutely crazy! their exclusive games sell more than most AAA multiplatform games! and their system sells like hotcakes even in a year were not that many big games release on the system.
it is insane...

i could use a new sku tbh. ready to upgrade from my launch unit

with the impending reveal of the Pro model, I would wait a few months and see what Nintendo is doing... because that 4K model could increase the performance levels of many games drastically! even without a specific patch since a lot of games struggle to stay at their target framerate or target resolution

Dream big?

the rumours are heating up and now even Nintendo mentioned to developers to make their games 4K ready (they most likely talk about adding high quality assets for UI elements etc.)
a 4K switch is not that big of a deal, playing games that already run at 1080p on the current model at 4K would only need a GPU with ~1.5TF

the current model already has a chip that when clocked at its peak rated clock speed would reach 0.649TF and this is all based on a chip design from 2015.
expecting Nvidia to have a new Tegra chip ready with 1.5TF of performance is not even remotely hard to believe, it's a bit more than twice the peak performance of the current GPU
current phone and tablet chips reach this already and they are designed for passive cooling, also when they go the PS4 pro route and bet on developers using checkerboard rendering or similar techniques, this 1.5TF would immediately go down by quite a bit.

My guess is the next switch will not have true 4k capabilities per say. Nvidia has 4k A.I upscaling that most of the times looks as good and even sometimes better than native 4k. It has been used in the Nvidia shield since 2019. I expected a very minor horsepower boost in the next switch. Probably things like better screen with higher res, better batter life, etc.

if they actually have enough die space used for tensor cores, so that DLSS2.0 would work on it, this could be one way of doing it as well yes.

a 1TF GPU + checkerboarding or tensor cores for DLSS2.0 would also be more than enough for a 4K Switch

Games sell systems. There's no question the ability to make it portable helps too. Though using that to try and devalue its success is like saying the PS2 wasn't really successful because most people bought it to play DVDs.

Good for them but just like with the Wii I don't think it's going to change the market. I think their ability to influence the rest of the market died when the motion control gimmick never translated beyond the Wii. And you can tell how much it died because even they aren't pursuing it anymore.

? Switch has motion controls and several games that are dependent on them.

Nintendo doesn't need to "influence" the market, they ARE the market.
