PS5 Teardown: An inside look at our most transformative console yet

Okay so ps5 has on-board 825 g ssd in 3 parts ... (whatever they are called; soldered on the motherboard)... from that you get 665 gig.

OS takes up to 160 gigs

Engineer says 2 years spent on liquid metal testing/preparation.

Although using heat pipes, performance is similar to vapor chamber.

Performance of heat sink is similar to vapour chamber is the context of what was said, but it is nicely spread over the section giving benefits to the design.

The liquid metal thermal transfer will be much better.

Mount the TV to the PS5 you lazy ass. And get some real speakers you dunce.

Fuck yeah SSD is literally on the board itself.
And that thicc IO controller will not joke around.
Dedicated hardware makes me cum.

Did you miss out on Cerny's presentation, it was crystal clear that the SSD is soldered onto the mainboard itself, thus the internal SSD isn't swappable like the PS4 console design. Rather you can add additional storage via the nvme drive shown in the teardown!

So it sounds like any PCI 4.0 SSD as long as it fits?

I wonder if those Corsair ones with the big heatsink will fit.
yeah, looks standard and will have headroom for the standard level of heatsink on an NVME.

Just love he slow, careful, dismantling they do on these.

Looks great and as someone that spend a HUGE amount of time fixing PS2's,3/4's they still share production methodology which I like as it shows consistency and helps me when I take mine apart as it feels familiar.

Speaking from a marketing and communications perspective, this presentation of this teardown is absolutely perfect.

A calm Japanese man in a smart shirt (all screams 'expert!'), sitting in a clean room, slowly and confidently showing us every important aspect of the Playstation's construction.

No screaming YouTubers. No idiotic, paid off influencers. No need to overplay or exaggerate. Just a straight forward presentation that shows everyone just how well designed the inside of the console is.

And 'liquid metal cooling' will sell an extra few million consoles. Mark my fucking words.

Only here to flex for getting the stand and screw at the bottom part 100% correct.

Outstanding achievement, I know :messenger_smirking:

Slowly put down the Kool Aid...

“We felt it was inevitable to make a generational leap in terms of performance in order to deliver a new, next-generation gaming experience. However, to do so, we had to balance every aspect of the system, from focusing on reducing the noise level to enhancing the cooling capacity, more than ever before.”

This was taken from the blog post. Maybe we can sticky the entire article into OP?

*the dust catcher does not guarantee the hardware clogging from dust.

Definitely needs maintenance it seems.
I thought that, then realised most people are morons and will think "dust catcher" = an object that takes in dust and makes it magically vanish.

The dust catcher catches dust. It will still need to be cleaned and emptied.

My thoughts of the teardown are the PS5 is bigger because they don't use a vapour chamber cooler they've cut costs there basically.

I'll have to get me one of those Samsung Pro 980 SSD drives as soon as Sony confirm it's compatible. They've made it easy to install of these.

I like the detail of the base hidden compartment for the screw.

Anyone with experience painting plastic can tell me if car spray paint will stick to the white plastic sides?

Can't decide between metallic silver or glossy black.

Maybe some of us are, whats your point ? Its a great design, spread heat sink over a larger section is better.

Centrifulgal fan probably moves more than 10 x more air at same RPM, it will shift some CFM if it needed and be quiet

Slightly OT but I replaced a traditional extractor fan in my bathroom with a centrifugal one last year. It runs almost silently and have no condensation issues anymore. The electrician that fitted it explained that the angle of the fan blades causes the angle of the incoming and outgoing air to change and creates a higher pressure airflow, so at lower rpm flow rate, they create a better flow of air out of the room.

Physics is physics and the same principle applies inside the console I guess.

That fans like a fucking wind turbine.

Is that an extra ssd slot! That's awesome.

That heatsink is the biggest I've ever seen.

Looks easy to take apart.

The fan can be taken out and cleaned by taking off the side panel and a couple of screws. Which is excellent.

Man, this video is like console porn.

Well that explains the size of the console.

The heatsink is ridiculous big and that's just about the thickest 120mm fan I've ever seen.

The large nvme expansion slot is good to see though. There are even screw holes to accommodate all lengths of drives that are available.
