Meh.

Honestly one of his unfunniest, also one where the critique feels incredibly bland and flat.
I havent watched one of his videos in ages, but remember his first years were funny as he would talk more like a normal guy making snarky comments while he plays.

Then it turned staged with fake overdramatized acting, or you could tell he practiced the lines or it's him literally speaking into the camera.

Then that guitar buddy was in more videos.

Now the guy is probably 40 years old by now and still doing the same schitick from 10 years ago?

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
With the aid of save states, the game is finish-able now.

I got close to the end on Genesis back in the day. But, the later levels are absolutely brutal. I have finished it finally a few years ago using emulator.

It's a very difficult, creepy, mind changing game. Worth experiencing, if you have the patience and the time.

Absolute shit just like all modern AVGN videos.

I'm definitely not a fan of his new content but watching the first 5 mins I gotta say it's not that bad. I appreciate he doesn't seem to be trying too hard and overdoing it.

Dunno if I'll bother finishing it or not, generally just lost interest in the guy the last few years.

I loved this game as a kid. At first I was lost and we (me, my brother and parents) we couldn't figure out how pass the first level.
The game was in english and we didn't speak english.

But with time, I learn to love it. I was really scared of deep sea when younger (till now actually but not as much) and this game fascinated me. I remember being ultra scared each time I had to go to see the Whales in Antarctica.

I played it for years and it remains a excellent game for me.

First time I watch this guy.... and the last for sure. He's painful to listen. I know it's sarcastic humour but the over exaggerated complaints are not funny ("I red a Dolphin can hold his breath 8h but in this game it can only 1 min !" WTF !). And he doesn't sound natural at all, bad acting all along.

Thanks for the nostalgia;)

You nailed it. Sometimes he yells so loud that it red-lines his audio levels. The anger was never the point of his humor.

Episodes 1-50 are Grade A humor that i still laugh out loud at to this day.
Episodes 50-100 are enjoyable and still rewatchable.
Episodes 100-183 are just hit or miss, with way more misses than hits. There's maybe 15 or so that I actually enjoy.

Give his earlier (6+ years ago) stuff a chance, some of it is pretty good. I quite like the movie reviews and even some of the Mike/Ryan stuff occasionally (unlike James, they still seem very interested in games), but the new AVGN episodes are pretty meh.

If anyone is going to go the emulation route for this unique series, then you may as well try the Mega CD version, which I hear is a little less brutal, plus has great music. Save states help a lot too.

Best part is when he leans forward too much and you can see his bald spot. Old episodes were pretty fun back in the day when he was clowning on actual shit games that we were suckered into playing as kids but now he is either picking on obscure stuff or actually decent games like Ecco. I've got to wonder how much time he wastes on his incredibly unfunny profanity alliterations.

The rest of their content shows how limited they really are. They're not at all insightful with any of the various nostalgia type reviews they do. AVGN is stale as hell, zero chance he'd still be doing those if not for adbucks... I'm not really into B-movie horror stuff so maybe that's decent, but I think it's about time to hit the unsub button.

For anyone unaware AVGN no longer writes his own script or even plays the games. It's all done by Screenwave and he just shows up to read some lines. That's why it hasn't been funny in like 5 years

It's not yet been 5 years, but yeah. Another thing that's missing is his actual personality. Commentary that was often the saving grace when he moved on from the truly shit ones.

I think it's evident that he didn't write this himself and was just written by someone that hates eco. Because if he did his own research and thoughts, he would have mentioned Eco's good points like the music, the graphics and the atmosphere, even if it was in form of a joke or/and we would have gotten more history on the game.

Instead its 99% bashing and nitpicking which doesn't feel like James. It feels like written by someone that watched the AVGN back in the day, didn't pick up on anything but the bashing and then worked of a checklist.

Wait, really? How do you know this??

Prefer his older vids. Like a few channels I used to watch, they feel a bit soulless now, advertising, sponsorship and so on.

In a way it’s my fault, the early years of youtube I used think it was a good and fun difference to mainstream media and now I don’t see much of a difference. Paywalls, ads everywhere.

Even very small channels I watch them and as soon as they are able to monetise the channel, the demeanour changes, the attitude and so on. I don’t begrudge people making a few bucks , I just can’t help feel on occasion the content changes for the worse because money comes into play.

That game traumatized me for life. We tried to beat it with my friend when we were like 6 years old. Obviously we couldn't do it. But then we found the level codes from somewhere, maybe from a gaming magazine. We tried the last level and... Oh boy... Oh boy... :messenger_astonished::messenger_loudly_crying:

This is one of my top 10 favorite games ever. The sheer atmosphere, the music (I actually prefer the music from Mega Drive which is way creepier than the Sega CD counterpart), the alien stuff, everything, this is a game that presents itself as an adventure in the ocean but in reality it is a survival horror (and one of the creepiest ever). I fucking love this game and I would love if someone remade it in some way. I still need to play the Dreamcast sequel.

The song in The Vents encapsulates the feeling that this game gives - warm, yet frightening, enclosed, claustrophobic, lonely...

Another episode of Angry Video Game Nerd, this time looking at (once upon a time highly regarded) Ecco the Dolphin, and you have to question what were the developers thinking on the level design side of things...

4 minutes in, damn, this is probably the most unfunny video he has ever done. He's not even trying anymore.

Ecco games had one thing in common and that was they were vague and hard as balls. I played the first and the DC game and never got far and didn't bother with it either.

Wait - what? Who is Screenwave?

😑🤮

No wonder. James has been farming it out.

Looks like he stopped caring a while ago. Nerd character doesn't even look right any longer. Probably gets sweet ad revenue still

Yeah but what was more difficult these games or Donkey Kong Country, which at the time blew away the competition with its outstanding graphics..

Man I miss the old style AVGNs. Nothing good ever lasts forever. I just don't think James has the time anymore to properly sit down and play these games himself, write out each episode and give the games the fair look they deserve. He used to go into the history of a game's development, reception, and other cool aspects to it. He even would use passcodes or whatever to at least make it to the end if he really couldn't do it so we can see the whole game reviewed. But here? Very little content stretched out and obviously written by someone else as James reads the script and reacts to the gameplay footage.

I haven't been giving any of the new AVGNs a chance after watching that awful cringe episode with Gilbert Gottfried, but I had to watch this one because I loved these games as a kid back in the early 90s. Man do I regret watching it.

I think he wants to end the series, but he just doesn't have the courage yet.

Well it's not like the other channel content is getting much attention, the only vids coming close to one million views are the ones with AVGN in the title. Part of the problem is these screenwave guys they brought on are just unlikeable oafs for the most part. Compare that to something like RedLetterMedia, where you have multiple different hosts that compliment each other and have unique insights to offer. The Cinemassacre attempt at aping them with Rental Reviews was just sad in comparison, James is the only one with anything interesting to say.

hm, episode was okay. Am I the only one that dislikes his shit jokes? Like it was funny with the Atari Jaguar episode, but this just screams try hard and by God, I totally dig infantile humor.
Also.. Ecco the dolphin? He could have choosen hundrets of trash games on the Genesis and goes with Ecco?

James wanted to quit doing AVGN around the time he made the AVGN Movie. That was supposed to be his ticket out of YouTube. But it flopped and his dreams of becoming a Hollywood director died. Now he's stuck being a YouTuber forever to pay the bills.

In all likelihood, he hates doing AVGN nowadays and that's why he "sold out" to Screenwave, which is owned by his former webmaster Ryan. They literally do all of the work and he just shows up and reads the lines, as has been pointed out. The people responsible for writing and directing the episodes are failed YouTubers themselves, so it makes sense that they are complete trash.

Yeah used to love these but nowadays they are pretty bad. Between the terrible jokes and how bored and uninterested he comes across it's clear he is only still doing these because they get a lot of views/money.

Never knew he did a movie till I googled it. Who wants to watch him in a 2 hour movie?
