Why Sony silence is a good sign.

Be specific about whats bad about the PS5 launch. I personally think having Demon's Souls, Miles Morales, Destruction All Stars, Sackboy, and the PS+ Collection alongside PS4 backwards compatability all at launch is pretty great actually.
Half that list we know nothing about outside of the announcement Is what I see as the issue and many others

we have paid our preorders and really know fuckall

The only thing thats true for is Destruction All Stars. The rest have shown plenty enough gameplay for you to base your decision on, and the PS+ collection doesnt really need any explanation. You get 18 of this gens best games to play whenever you want when you sign up for a PS+ subscription.

Weird thread. I can’t see why their silence would be a good thing but I don’t know what people are so worked up about. If Sony didn’t say shit until the day of Launch it wouldn’t make a single difference. The shit will still sell out regardless.

You have PC as an avatar, you should probably be able to evaluate if that's even possible. It's not obviously, so like.... Step up the game.

Seriously, how can we logically pull 20% better for PS5 from the below?

XSX: Custom AMD RDNA2
PS5: Custom AMD RDNA2

XSX: TSMC N7 Enhanced
PS5: TSMC N7

XSX: 360.45 mm² - 15.3 Billion transistors
PS5: ~325 mm² - ~9.23 Billion transistors (based on Cerny statement 62% more transistor per CU)

XSX: 52 Compute Units @ 1.825Ghz (Sustained) = 12.15 Teraflops
PS5: 36 Compute units @ 2.23Ghz (Best case) = 10.28 Teraflops

Everyone rips into MS when they show stuff too early but they still want Sony to show now, now, now.
I fucking hate gamers on forums. As you said they all bitch that MS go too early then they cry that Sony go too late. The reality is both have announced a sufficient amount in a fair time period.

Some pricks want the details straight out of the boardroom meetings.

There are not many PlayStation owners who have not played any of these games so it really only leaves the incentive on how are they going to run and we know nothing

will we have uncapped framerates.?..will they load quicker? Is their a boost mode

All these simple questions which ms have been open and honest about but Sony have been sitting on their hands

I understand covid has messed up a lot of things but if you have just spent over 1500 aud to preorder 2 ps5s and you see the xbox giving you all this info about their console you start to wonder what the fuck they are doing.

You also don't give up features that your competitors can copy. I'm very excited for the create feature. Well excited for what it could end up being.

What can MS copy within a month and a half timeframe? The closer to launch we get the more bizarre the explanations seem to be. The PS4 launch was nothing like this PS5 launch. Sony were loud (and more importantly clear) on what the PS4 was and what features it had way in advance before the system launched. Is it because MS has made a better product?

Sony's strategy is simple. Let people complain about TFlops and in about 2 months boom, check mate. They are cocky as always.

They are in this business for many years. People who are complaining should have some faith in them.

So what was their method of business this generation being that they had the TF advantage against the Xbox? Perception wise in the media and in consumers minds, I really do believe MS has the bigger c*** in terms of features between the systems

Do you truly believe the average gamer cares about this?
Those are the games, this is what the console looks like and this is the price.

Preorders are rolling in. Anything else from this point is a bonus. Make it impactful and show it when it's ready.
It has been working for them so far, why change it?

I'm as curious as everyone else about what you mentioned, but the race is on. Reveal it closer to launch and everyone will remember it. Show 2 months earlier and unless it's a game, people will forget about it.

People here, on a gaming forum, "forgot" a lot of things that were stated on the Road to PS5.

Sony didn't even show everything, how can you compare the two?

Two cats, one in front of you and the other 5000 miles away. Can you tell which one has the bigger tail?

Sony were flaunting features in June 2013 for the PS4 and the system launched November 2013. That Sony is nowhere to be found as of now. I will get the PS5 as soon I can but I'm sick of wondering what the system is ALL about. I was looking forward to 2013 Sony to usher in the PS5 the same way.

I get the frustration hence the thread. I'm trying to highlight that they are yet to show everything and it's likely something worth to keep a secret until the end.
They shown the controllers, the games, demonstrated how the SSD could change gameplay with R&C and the console itself. I don't think they are lacking. It's just a different strategy that's paying off for them.

The "Please be excited" meme is actually fitting as we ended up getting FF7R out of it. People fail to remember even that.

I can totally agree with this post. They have shown some things that gives us an indicator on what to look forward to when the system launches. Obviously the Sony heads who were promoting the PS4 are not around or has sort of taken a backseat in the company. Shuhei Yoshida for example.

Respectfully disagree. In fact, more often than not, a company being this silent about an upcoming product is usually an indicator of something being very very wrong behind the scenes.

Obviously, there's the possibility that they (Sony) are planning to 'open up the gates' on the PS5 a few weeks before launch for the purpose of fueling and maximizing customer awareness and interest in the PS5. That could be the gameplan and that could explain the gaps in information about the PS5. But there's also the possibility that there are people within PlayStation -- in this case, people who work in product communication and product information -- that are just bad at their task(s), and these C and D students are turning in C and D work that is resulting in a lack of information, misinformation, and an overall miscommunication about the PS5. For example, the communication from Sony about Miles Morales has been unnecessarily confusing, so much so that you have to wonder if the game was never intended to be a launch game and the messy communication is a result of the game making it for launch + the communication guys at PlayStation being unprepared to tell the public about the game.

In any case, we'll find out soon enough what's up with the PS5. Again, it could be Sony's plan all along to strategically edge PS5 information and then have a massive release of information weeks before launch. Conversely, the PS5 could be going through significant product and or marketing issues that the public is (currently) unaware of and in a few weeks, hiding that information won't work anymore.

I remember seeing something exactly like this in February:

It’s September now. PS5 comes out in 2 month. I don’t think it’s smart. I think it’s weak and beta.
It is just the old prevent defense. They are so far up on Microsoft they are scared to make any mistake so they they say nothing and run out the clock. Let the warriors and astroturfers do the work blame free.

I agree on the Spiderman MM part. That said, everyone is making the same "mistake" left and right. They are pushing on how much they can make out of us and people be still ok with it. Compared to Control and CoD counterparts, it was nowhere near as bad though.

If something was indeed wrong, smoke that big can't be kept a secret for this long. This is feature related and NDA backs this.

Using other companies like Stadia or even MS. Don't you think their half explained features are leading to more confusion?
The XSX compatibility, the XSS last gen games being Xbox One S versions and so on?

Keep it shut until you can show it properly. I even pointed out the PS Plus Collection case, why not show the PS5 version already? Because they are aiming for impact. They didn't show half baked things (maybe FF16 out of everything).

I get the skepticism, but I still believe a storm is brewing.

If it bothers you that much then cancel your pre-order. I'm sure there are plenty of people who have no problem with the lack of info willing to take your PS5.

SONY HASN'T SAID ANYTHING, THERE MUST BE TROUBLE!! 😱😱

Personally, I didn't give two craps that they waited as long as they did to reveal the price(s) and release date. Now that they have, however... and now that we're closing in on release... there are some lingering questions they need to address. I was starting to plan on how to rearrange my current setup and decided that I'd move the PS4 Pro into the bedroom (which I was already planning on, really). Then I started thinking about storage. I have an external 8TB drive on my PS4. One of the reasons I got an 8TB drive is that this is the largest drive that the PS4 OS supports. I'll want to get another external for my PS4 games to connect to the PS5. That way, my library is available in both places all the time. But as I was perusing Amazon for a drive, it occurred to me that we have NO idea how large an external USB drive the PS5 will support. So, I put that purchase on hold.

Little things like that are the kinds of things we should be starting to get information about.

Also, I know that the current camera will work for PSVR on the PS5. What I don't know is whether the new camera will work with PSVR on the PS5. And I'm aware that there will be a free adapter for the old camera and that it'll be free. But we don't know when that will be available or how.

Sony not talking all the time is fine by me. When someone talks its important to have something meaningful to say, something with impact. I enjoy it that there have been only 2 PS5 showcases, but each one had something to show.

I don't get the silence part, what have they not said that we're still waiting for? Is it about the UI? Do all the engineers at GAF want to see the PCB inside? i thought we knew the important stuff.

44 days before launch:

-User Interface
-Backward Compatibility
-Multimedia Apps available
-Create Button
-Storage upgrade
-Promised Teardown

But go ahead, tell me how Sony is doing a fantastic job doing nothing and how their silence is brilliant.

They're about to launch a new piece of consumer hardware, they are already taking orders for quite a lot of money for what we're getting (both consoles are overpriced but that's standard...). They should communicate to their consumers all the details they ought to know. How does transferring your account work? Will everything be transferred, including save games, downloaded DLC (if you upgrade a game to a PS5-version)? What about if I want to get a bigger SSD, can I open the thing up and put it in?
They've brought this on themselves with locking their users into their ecosystem, so they need to start talking about that.

this texture patent

(i hope they don't charge for it though)
Either I'm reading it wrong or its Sony trying to patent something which has been done via emulators for years, I swear that's the exact texture replacement method used on PPSSPP.

the psn you could easily dedicate a whole show to
  • Is it region locked again to the store
  • if not can you change your region
  • Save game transfers
  • Primary/secondary consoles and game sharing
  • have they fixed the atrocious download speeds
  • can you preorder games like you do on xbox (and not pay until release)
  • a proper refund process (that can be done via account management like xbox)
  • how will friends and parties work via cross platform
  • is their support functions still spread out all-over the world (depending on what time you call you may get someone who does not know the local laws...particularly around refunds)
That's off the top of my head

ok didn't see it like that.
is there a reason to be concerned for emulation in open source projects ?
imo it's a good if this thing comes to console BC.

Ah, thanks for confirming my suspicions. The whole "Sony is silent" is mostly a bunch of superficial crap.

-it's a fucking UI on a console. Are people making a purchase decision based on how you navigate until you press the play button?

-they said 99% games will be playable. Sounds pretty good to me.

-if you're waiting on a ps5 to watch YouTube or Netflix, you're doing it wrong.

-I don't even know what a create button is or why it's important. I just want to play games

-I'll give you the storage upgrade, it'd be nice to know more

-do people masturbate to console innards or something? I've never opened any of my consoles but apparently you can't buy one without having seen its pcb.

The truth is that Sony doesn't have anything to make PS5 stand out in relation to XsX. Therefore, they have adopted this strategy of being quite and just let the Xbox momentum fade. Whenever that happens they drop a teaser of an internal game or something like that and let the media/fans do the marketing for them.

People all over social media, forums and the journalists. You know the media, the people that their job is to follow the latest news not a GAF member so excited about their favorite company box that they’ll defend to ridiculous length. Case in point.

The_Mike

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
I don't pay attention to patents anymore. Sony had one YEARS ago for backwards compatibility where a console could imitate old hardware and play the games natively and nothing came out of it.

Maybe they hoped to destroy Xbox' bc compatibility by having some patents.

I mean, they don't care about bc, so maybe they want to destroy it? I know they do with PS5, but they didn't with ps4

*ahem*

Sony doesn’t give a fuck about following a timetable people like us want to see. They only care about the general audience. Everybody knows how much the console is, when it’s out, and what games you get to play when it is. This, whether you like it or not, is all that matters.

IMO they knew this gen will be much much harder to win. MS managed to get get a better hardware but that doesn't mean anything. They got deep pockets but lack environment. Sony during the years created a symbol. Playstation means console gaming, it means Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid and so much more. They know what they are doing. Cerny knows this business perfectly. He doesn't want to show everything now, they want Microsoft to make some moves and react at a proper time.

Come on people, I know the current CEO is more in a financial department but people on such positions aren't stupid. Have some faith or regret saying bad words and apologizing soon. This gen gonna be huge for the first time - speed of ssd, good cpu/gpu balance, hdmi 2.1 support do no more tearing, fidelity and smoothness. No more loading screens.

Never happened before. Not in the consoles market.

Saying that MS have better hardware isnt even the whole truth (I agree that it doesnt mean anything, just want to wonder what this better hardware would even mean)

what is better hardware?

Biggest number of Tflops on paper?

Least faulty units after 5 years?

Smallest console?

Most silent units on average?

Fastests ssd?

best audio processing?

Best overall combination of all harware features?

Best APIs for hardware - software connection?

They are similar and different, but is one of them clearly better? As in "average dev can easily make better games on system A, but on system B they are worse"

Just staring at 12Tflops and thinking it is better is like starting at Atari jaguars 64-bit marketing and thinking it is better than other systems.

In my eyes PS5 family is more balanced as whole, they dont have PC+series s to drag behind, so devs can concentrate to one version and thats it. On hardware level PS5 also looks to be "more engineered", while xbox sounds more like American style marketing talk of how domestic item must be better than bad imports and lot of buzz words to hide flaws

So if after few years xbox games look better than ps5 versions including exclusives, maybe they have better utilized hardware, but until then, nope.

And yeah hardware TF numbers clearly dont matter as much as people think. Here PS5 sold out in minute or two and series x+s is still available after week or two weeks.

It is what it is, Sony should fail epicly and MS do everything right and still it would be a close battle, and now Sony is doing things mostly right so competition is already over
