Let's face it, RE4 was a massive mistake.

I had a ton of fun with the RE4 GC version. I don't think it was a mistake. As a survival horror - not really - but as a genuinely fun gaming experience, yes. It pretty much opened up a whole spectrum for many to follow.

The only Resident Evil games that exist to me are 1-3 original releases + REmake 1. The rest of the series is garbage including the remakes of 2 and 3. Life becomes so much easier when you realize you don't have to get more of something you love, you can just enjoy what's already there without needing anything else. Not everything has to continue on indefinitely.

They had to adapt, they wouldn't sell millions if they stuck to the old gameplay.

Playing RE2 in 3rd and then 7 in 1st person is fun and adds variety to gameplay.

Fun fact: Resident Evil was never meant to be straight horror. This is a false narrative. The game is called Bio Hazard in Japan and stuff like "Survival Horror" was just the result of awkward localization. The first Resident Evil had you control characters with a massive arsenal, taking on biological experiments gone wrong. You had a freaking rocket launcher.

RE4 feels like a natural progression from 1, 2 and 3, while 7 was more an attempt to appease the West's opinion on what the game should be, rather than what the series actually was.

I will never know. It was my first. The next one I would play was Revelations, then VII.
I enjoyed RE4 so much that I still own it today and my girlfriend says "unforastero" randomly because of its influence on me.
To me, it's a great RE and "action" game. A modern classic IMHO.

Let me give you my hot take; survival horror is one if not my favorite genres, but action RE games are far superior, and I generally tend to hate third person shooters.

Why do I think that? Cause RE4 and RE6 are some of the best games ever made.

This looks awful honestly. Glad it was changed.

Resident Evil x Luigi's Mansion crossover.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I feel like the OP is asking RE4 for apologize for being fun just because it doesn't fit his definition of a Resident Evil game.

If Capcom had thought their original concept for RE4 was any good, they would have stuck with it. Instead, they put out this wonderful B-movie classic game that will get ported to every damn system it's capable of running on for the foreseeable future.

Going to third person was trash. RE4 turned the franchise into an action game for the next number of installments and they got progressively worse. Leading upto the cluster fuck that was RE6. Those design choices were all rooted in from the success of RE4.

Even RE3 remake while flawed was still better than RE4 as an RE installment.

Want proof? Compare how critically acclaimed RE2 remake and RE7 were. Even Remake went back to it's roots which every RE4 fan were suddenly making it out as the second coming and RE7 was a new step into exploring the psychological horror of the genre. Which what RE is meant to be by the way.... HORROR.

So yeah screw RE4. Good riddance to that history of Resident Evil.

Edit: Was RE4 a fun action game? Sure. Was it a good RE game? No way in hell.

THIS is what RE4 was meant to be before the design change. Biohazard 3.5:

I get what you're saying, but I'd actually disagree with you.

First and foremost, while it didn't have a third person view, RE3 is where the series turned to action over survival horror. Having recently replayed the original RE3, a lot of it focuses on an action style of gameplay, from how ammo and gun play get more focus, to the dodge mechanic, it took away from that feeling of helplessness and allowed the character to truly feel powerful, without the need of beating the game for a weapon with unlimited ammo. And while 3 has nemesis to chase you around for a fear factor, it also gives them player a choice to take him out, and rewards the player for doing so, putting more on an emphasis on action for those brave enough.

Code Veronica would follow up with more action set pieces, fewer zombies and stronger weapons with more ammo available than RE1, 2 and 3. It still kept the puzzles, the semi-Metroidvania traversal, and somewhat static cameras (though now with dynamic ones) but the further move away from survival horror was more apparent.

Resident Evil 4 just went in the direction that 3 and CV were already heading. However, it still holds on to the horror part with set pieces the way CV had action set pieces. There are plenty of moments in RE4 that feel like the Tyrant fights in previous games. Many set pieces in the village and castle that puts focus on survival over action. The tension just feels somewhat different because you have more control than you had before. You can aim now, but the tension is still there. Enemies have distinct went points, but the tension is still there.

RE4 didn't ruin any of the tension that previous RE games gave you and called fear. You just feel it differently because you have more control over aiming. RE5 and 6 are full on action, but you can't blame 4 for those as Revelaitons went back to a more horror focused style while using RE4's camera and aiming.

I'm one of the people who believe Resident Evil 4 is the best game of the bunch, but really bad from a horror game standpoint. The tension and fear just aren't there for me. The early game zombies and RE7 are much better from that aspect.

What time is it?
It was a needed breath of fresh air after RE3 (good but no where near the heights of RE2) and CVX (where the series really showed it was long in the tooth). The issue with RE4 is what came after it almost completely abandoned survival horror in favor of action that couldn't match the greatness of RE4.

RE4 is the best installment compared to 5,6,7.
The worst compared to 0,1,2 and code veronica.
I am not sure about 3 which was waaaaay too small. I think i prefer 4 over 3

Never made sense why people wanted more of 4, got 5 and then said 5 wasn't what they wanted when it was more 4, with slightly faster pace.

The original games weren't that good anyway, just poor mans pointlessly difficult adventure titles made for a more mainstream audience but lacking the tech that Alone in the dark did so you have to backtrack twice as much and use a box for items because the PSX couldn't let you have multiple ways to use, pickup or store items like PC did with AITD.

RE6 was actually more like 4 than 5 was because they removed the B movie zombie atmosphere for the darker tone that 4 had and people still spit on it lol. People actually hate RE4 they are too dumb to admit it. They didn't want more they just figured 4 was the most tolerable.

I can't fault RE4 for lackluster 5 and 6.
Wasn't 4s fault at all. You leave it alone.

I enjoyed Remake2, haven't played the first person RE7. I don't think I would like it, who knows. It doesn't look like my cup of tea.

Resident Evils crown was taken by silent hill at that point. They had to do something different. 3 wasn’t particularly well received at the time and felt stale. Four kicked the series up it’s arse and made a huge impression on other video game companies. You may lament the effect it had on the series but so many great games were influenced by the title. It’s superb.

Resident Evil main serie review:

1 - okish
2 - masterpiece
2R - masterpiece with great graphics
3 - masterpiece
3R - is this a joke ?
4 - good game, not a resident evil ( AY, un forastero )
5 - wtf is this ?
6 - is this a bad joke ?
7 - great game, good atmosphere, great resident evil but in first person.

Completely agree with this.

Would like to add that RE1R and Code Veronica were masterpieces.

RE6 is the worst of the lot followed by RE5, RE3 remake and RE4.

For me RE2 OG and RE2 remake are still the best in the series.

If Resident Evil 4 Hookman released instead, you'd throw a fit. If anything, that version is less "Resident Evil" than the final 4. Get over yourself. Resident Evil 4 is a masterpiece.

Game was fucking brilliant, particularly at launch on GameCube.

5 and 6 were more obnoxious, and yeah, we wouldn't have had to put up with them if RE4 wasn't a thing, but I don't care. It might not really be a horror game but I refuse to criticise it and politely ask that you take it back, you horrible potty-mouthed fuck.

You do realize Resident Evil Village looks pretty much like a next-gen resident evil 4 in FPS mode...

If it was such a failure, why is Capcom trying to recapture the same mood in Village ?

Also, I've now decided to call the NPCs in the new game "Village People".

Even tho I like Resident Evil 2 better, Resident Evil 4 was waaay too good. It was a breath of fresh air and came at exactly the right time. Don't be silly OP.

I agree with OP, but this was ages ago and the new team gets it. RE7 was a return to form and RE8 seems to be following it's steps, maybe even claiming back the whole vibe of RE4 but now actually scary.

And now the creator of RE is working on a boring VR? game for PS5, where you by flailing with your hands like a drunkard ... you defeat demons with umbrellas.

Perpetually doomed to make shitty naruto games in Tokyo. Resident Evil is ded. RE7 and RE8 only carry the "moniker", but are tangible at best aka not canonical imho.

If i wanted action, i would play House of the Dead instead.

The problem with 4 is that the game is a parody of RE. From merchants, to cartoonish enemies, to robots, to Micheal bay action, etc.

It's Resident Evil: Nintendo edition. The game doesn't really fit among the new realistic Remakes and RE7. It's more like a spin off parody.

I think 5 was where they really fucked up by doubling down on the action stuff. RE4 was fine, the series was in need of some new life and a modern reinvention, but they got off course after that.

Still my GOAT, along with GameCube Metroid Primes.

And RE7 was FANTASTIC.

Agreed. 5 was aleays a bit “off” to me.

That belongs to RE2 remake followed by my personal favourite RE CV.

I love CV. I feel if capcom gave it the RE2 Remake treatment and fix some of the issues with CV it would be one of the best entries.
Great story, setting, lore and mansion and the longest Resident Evil gameplay wise..... Fix the issues and you will have a hit

My favourites are 2, CV, RE2 and my all time favourite RE1 Remake
