Jez Corden: Don't Expect Xbox to follow Playstation's Exclusive Style Next-Gen

Of all people, I honestly didn't expect him to say this. For those of you who don't know, Jez is a Windows Central writer & a Xbox Insider. When asked about the quality of exclusive games that have come to Playstation this generation & wishing Xbox would improve on the quality of their next gen exclusive games, Jez says he doesn't think Xbox will be able to deliver that type of content to gamers and you should get a Playstation instead.

Yeah more GAAS and less quality games n less quality of gameplay.

Do you guys really think that these exclusives are the biggest reason Sony sold so many consoles? What are the sales of said games? They seem to sell to what 5-10% of Sony gamers? I think third party games are actually the biggest reason. Sony made most of their money with PS4 on GaaS games. They have free online for F2P games. I think that those things were a bigger reason for their success.

I'm not saying they don't make a difference, I love them myself, but not as much as you all want to believe. CoD, Fortnite, etc have a much bigger casual fanbase than all of Sony's exclusives combined.

I just feel like "open world" is a better descriptor for.. well.. open world games... and a game having an "open world" does not make it a sandbox game, or mean it even has sandbox elements. GTA for instance is a 3rd person story driven action game.. with some fun "sandbox" elements.. (a world you can fuck around in, cause car chases, etc.) It's not the open world that makes it a sandbox, it's the fact they included a lot of randomness in the open world that made it a sandbox.

I think it was you who used Ghosts of Tsushima as an example earlier in this thread and that's exactly what I'm talking about. There's really not much in the way of experimentation in that game or emergent gameplay.. it's a series of combat encounters where you have some choice, but that's almost every game with combat. Same with collecting items, or finding any of the 4-5 "check these off your list" things you can do (haiku, hot springs, etc.)

Days Gone on the other hand I see the sandbox elements with your ability to sort of create emergent scenarios by getting zombies to attack the enemy... or just fly around doing crazy shit with hoardes in general. GoT has none of that.. just has a few different activities you can do in a world that in the end is fairly structured and leaves no more experimenting than any game that has multiple weapons and a stealth element.

Essentially: games with large open worlds lend themselves to sandbox style gameplay, but the open world itself is not what makes them that way.
I haven't played GOT yet so I can't say what sandbox elements it does or doesn't have. I don't know what random stuff it has but Horizon definitely does. The fact that you can take down the factions in different ways and tactics. And even get the robots to straight up fight each other. So that would share Days Gone's place in sandbox.
And yeah, Open World probably has split off from Sandbox now to be fair, considering there are many varying styles of open world in the 20 years since GTA 3.
But now if it's a case of 'sandbox' is just a game where you can do anything you like within the scenario, then games like Surgeon Simulator or Job Simulator are probably the new gen sandboxes. And yeah... Too much of a blanket term lol.

The high polish first party games complement the biggest money makers and diffetentiate their product. Yes, they're important.

Aren't they, and their studios, also talking about letting the studios make whatever their creative talent wants?

This narrative that MS is forcing people into specific types of games seems to fly in the face of all of that.

I mean, maybe they are.. but I feel like someone they bought would say something at this point... instead it's all "MS is hands off, just gives us budget to do what we want."

I'd be shocked if at least one of their studios isn't directly targeting the types of games that Sony loves to make.. I mean didn't MS specifically poach a ton of talent from Sony studios?

I also think the idea that only GAAS games work for MS financially on Gamepass is flawed as well. Getting subscribers with big SP gmaes could be just as lucrative.. and beyond that.. MS is still in the business of selling $60 games.

You'd think the existence of Everwild alone would destroy this fantasy that MS are working their studios like slave laborers in a Chinese sweatshop to make what's dictated down the factory line, but nah xD

Oh for sure stuff like pitting enemies against each other is a sandboxy thing.. kind of a classic one really.

I'd consider parts of Halo CE sandboxy because of that.. a linear SP game, but you could handle the battles in various ways.. including letting enemies fight it out on your behalf, use different vehicles, etc. Same as Days Gone, or Horizon.. just within a level of a linear game.

It's those things that make it a sanxbox, not the "open world." It's just that open world games are a great place to put sandboxy gamepaly.

Either way I think we understand each other!

Totally agree. Why not try and do a bit of everything. I can see some smaller games, AA if you will, getting made, but I have no issue with that. Smaller more experimental games was something that was missing this gen in comparison to the PS360 era, and even more so the Xbox/PS2 generation.

I think they are important to us as hardcore gamers, but they have minimal effect on overall sales. The casuals who make up the bulk of the sales are playing 3rd party multiplayer games. I'm basing this on game sales. How many copies has Ghost of Tshushima sold? 5 million maybe? So about 4% of Sony console owners bought it? That's sad for such an amazing game.

Nice try but TLoU is obviously a game, with objectives and gameplay mechanics.

Flight Simulator has none of that, you just fly from point A to point B. Or Excel and Word are games too .
Laughably reductive, like saying Forza or GT are just “driving from A to B”. There are obviously heaps of mechanics in regards to actually controlling the plane and dealing with weather, and before you come in with some “as if the casuals will deal with that” bullshit, you could say the exact same about people playing TLOU2 on what ever it’s easiest mode is.

It’s okay to not like a particular game or not like sims but to imply it isn’t a game is flat-out wrong. Do better.

20% of game sales for Sony's first financial quarter this year were from first-party titles. Let's not forget God of War helped Sony break console sale records. They're absolutely valuable.

This is crazy talk and not how any of that works lol

Most of the top 10 sold games on PS4 are 1st party. Good chance Ghosts and TLOU2 make the top 10 by the time it's all said and done.

Would not be surprised that by end of the generation only GTA V and Witcher 3 remain in the PS4 top 10 that aren't 1st party.

edit: OK as others pointed out this list is missing some games and IS BAD VERY BAD

But Sony's games still sell really fucking well...

Nice! I guess I am shocked and disappointed at how few games people actually buy. I guess it explains the bad attach rate of most consoles. Goddamn Bloodborne the GoTG or at least top 3 at 2 million. SMH.

Snake Oil Salesman
Animal Crossing sold 22 million units (no price drops) on a device with 63 million units sold worldwide...in 3 months.

Sony's exclusives are highly overrated in terms of market impact. They're missing the boat in terms of true mass appeal. Sony would be a fool to stick to games with such a limited ceiling.

It would be interesting to compare the budgets of Animal Crossing with The Last of Us II.

This list is horribly inaccurate and there's many missing games, multiplats that is.

Black Ops 3 sold like 17 million, Red Dead Redemption 2 like 17 million and so on and so forth. Terrible list.

It's why Gamepass actually works in concept.

If they can get "average gamers" to give them $9.99 a month, that's actually more than the average gamer spends...

Yeah I was going to call into question how accurate it is myself lol

Was really just linking it to show in general that Sony's games do gangbusters.. but did RDR2 sell that much on PS4 alone? Multiplats would be split across multiple systems.. but it should be on the list.. oddly enough it's referenced in the sources at the bottom.

Wikipedia is not a source. You'll notice that pretty much every call of duty is missing from there. RDR2 is missing from there.

First party games also get bundled which inflates their totals.

You mean, you don't want MS to copy Sony, Nintendo, Rockstar, CD Project RED, etc right? Because making amazing single player games isn't just a Sony thing.

Nintendo's games are NOT story driven at all so they don't even apply. Plus, I personally believe that Zelda and Mario are HIGHLY OVERRATED but that's just me. Rockstar is great but they barely release games anymore. One game for every five years and unless you're a GTA/RDR fan, they may not appeal to you. I quit RDR 2 after a few hours. Gameplay and combat is clunky and the controls simply sucked. CDPR is amazing but they truly make RPG's at their core which Sony doesn't do plus CDPR is going first person with Cyberpunk which Sony hasn't done since PS4 launch.

As for Sony, their exclusives are amazing for the most part with a few disappointment for me personally but their template is exactly the same. Third person over the shoulder single player story driven action/adventure. The core is the same even though some gameplay/combat elements change. They even use the same ideas and quests. For example, Spider Man had stealth missions in which if you're detected, the mission fails. Days Gone, same thing and Tsushima has the same damn thing. Those quests and quest design for those missions all suck.

I want Microsoft to give me a few of those third person single player over the shoulder story driven games but NOT all of them. I have a sci-fi FPS in Halo Infinite, a third person RPG in Fable, a first person RPG in Avowed, a strategy turn based RPG in Gears Tactics, an open world survival zombie game in State of Decay 3 and since I haven't played it, a 2D platformer in ori and the Will of the Wisps. Plus, they also have Everwild which is a wait and see because no one knows what the hell it is including Rare. Then, there's InXile who's in pre-production for their next gen AAA RPG, Compulsion is working on a next gen game and we still have The Initiative's next gen game.

There's also games like Flight Simulator 2020, Age of Empires IV, Grounded and Battletoads even though these games don't appeal to me at all, I like that Microsoft is letting them do what they want and adding so much variety which is great especially if you're subscribed to Game Pass.

Going into next gen with Xbox Series X as my primary gaming console, one of the reasons is because im much more hyped and excited for their first party games because I truly don't know what im getting from them where as with Sony's first parties, I know what im getting and while im looking forward to all of their sequels, I know what they are and because of that, my hype simply isn't there right now. With that said, I will own a PlayStation 5 Disc Edition as my secondary exclusives only console. I'm just nowhere as hyped for PS5 as I am for Series X.

PS4 exclusives have been consistently charting as yearly best sellers for a while now. I think they're doing fine

What's foolish is chasing after a market built on staple IPs that have been nurtured for decades

so assuming what he claim is true, basically philosophy of making game for main console manufacturer of current and upcoming next generation is:

  • Sony = cinematic games based on hardware capabilites
  • Nintendo = gameplay based experience game based on console features/gimmick
  • Microsoft = sandbox, multiplayer, gaas or engagement type of game based on bussines model
on other aspect apart this 3 only Nintendo sitting between the other two, on its own different market(due to the nature of their console), and for now we didnt see any clear sign yet wheter MS will end up on similliar situation, or still somehow direct or indirect competitor to Sony or, end up sitting on both spaces which is still compete with Sony while having its own market at same time.
But in long term situation, MS might still end up having other competitor in its own 'private' market if other big companies out there also bring out their own video game subscription services. Who know? ex. EA, Ubisoft, Epic, Valve, .... Amazon? assuming Sony didnt 'join' the fray later. Well they already have PS Now.

MS trying to 'get away' from Sony is good thing but at same time we need competition. Cant have one side unrivalred for quite long time or it might end up unbeneficial for consumers later.

111 million PS4 owners, that's how. It should be a must buy for every one of them, hahaha. Kind of how Animal Crossing sold to 33% of Switch owners. Tshushima should be essential. And yes, 5 million is great and I'm happy for SP but that's not my point. I am just wondering why all of these people even own a PS4 when they aren't buying the best things on them. So, don't be offended as if I am talking badly about my GoTG, I am talking crap about the vast majority of PS4 owners.

What first party multiplayer games (other than Halo) are coming to Xbox in the near future? Genuinely curious because third party MP titles have dominated the market, and imo, Xbox suffered last gen as a result of that.

Halo and Gears don’t have the same appeal anymore, which is why they’re going the GaaS route. Sony pretty much gave up on multiplayer for this reason.

Microsoft got the money, they got the most powerful next gen, we just want big AAA new IP on a similar level to what Sony put out on the PS4 and to some degree the PS3. Fable is cool, but probably won’t be out for another 2-3 years.

Microsoft =/= Xbox.

Think about it like this: Apple =/= Apple TV. If the iPhone rakes in billions of dollars and Apple TV rakes in leaves, Apple isn't going to pump billions of dollars into Apple TV just cause. So the same likely applies to Microsoft. They're not going to pump in billions of dollars into a business that isn't guaranteed to make that money back.

Right. Uptake ratio compared to number of systems. But as I said, only been 3 weeks. It has still got lots of time. Or if like me... Holding off until the PS5 comes out to get it then.

They're just going a different way... for a different crowd.

I've been tough enough on their games but they have an audience and thinking about it, I shouldn't be dunking on the hard work of people at these studios. They have a vision and because it doesn't align with what I want, doesn't mean it has any less value to others.

I'm sure someone will say something disparaging PS5 in the next while and trigger me into saying some nonsense but I want any XBox users here to know I like you all and want you to have a great launch and enjoy every moment of your new console.
That's really all it is. Xbox gamers just prefer Xbox games for their brand of diversity, gameplay and visuals. I personally enjoy playing my games for months on end. I also enjoy playing single player games with stellar MP attached. Halo, Forza, FH, Gears, SoD, SoT etc. I dig that shit. And I like feeling like I'm getting my monies worth. I can't rock Sony games like that but, I can understand why others do. Its just not MY personal bag, and that's okay.

I just hope we can give the other side (whoever that is) the benefit of the doubt and support eachother having a great launch experience.

The day Microsoft just start aping Sony and focusing in cinematic single player “experiences” is the day I just switch to pc pretty much exclusively. That type of game just doesn’t appeal to me.

Sony, MS, and Nintendo focussing in different things is the best thing for consumers. Unfortunately fanboys don’t think about it like that.

the funny/sad thing is that had Microsoft made God of War or TLOU2, the people in here saying MS need to make games like that would have been saying they’re bad games and they need to make more games like whatever sony made instead.

This is funny because MS made its name on these cinematic single player experiences. what do you think Halo, Mass Effect, Max Payne, Gears, Alan Wake, and Quantum Break were?

MS has lost their way. Halo and Gears are still cinematic experiences and just dont have the panache they used to. They are never in the goty conversations like they used to. They no longer define and redefine the genres like they used to.

Sony first party makes the same games everyone is out there making. Open world sandbox with story modes. Uncharted and TLOU are pretty much the only linear games left. The only difference is that they do it better than everyone else. Better visuals, better combat, and better story.

To reduce Sony games as cinematic single player experiences is nonsensical and exposes a poster's bias. They clearly havent played these games. Days Gone, Death Stranding, Spiderman, Bloodborne, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, GoW are all open world games that are leagues ahead of ubisoft open world trash and right up with there Witcher 3 and RDR2 as some of the best open world games. Detroit, Last Guardian and Until Dawn are the only games that qualify as cinematic single player experiences. The rest are fun to play with some of the best combat and gameplay in the industry.

Halo and Gears didn't make their name on cinematic single player experiences lol. They made their name because of their multiplayer. Max Payne? MS didn't make their name on that lol. Alan Wake is third party also....same with Quantum Break.

Sony didn't make Death Stranding, or Spiderman, or BloodBorne btw.

You think Sony single player games are much more than they are. They're cinematic linear single player games for the most part. You say I'm showing my bias, but you're doing the exact same.

Microsoft are doing Age of Empires IV. Sony don't give a shit about strategy games, let alone RTS games. So it's not the worst thing that Microsoft are doing their own thing and not chasing after Sony.

Yes, Finish the fight slogan was for multiplayer. Sure. The entire marketing campaigns of halo games revolved around the story mode.

Halo is just as much known for campaigns as it is for multiplayer. Gears literally revolutionized third person shooters and you think it was multiplayer? if anything gears mp has always been mocked as a shotgun noob tube. Max Payne was an xbox console exclusive for a while, i dont even remember a PS2 port coming out, and a large part of why xbox made its name on shooters. Alan Wake and Quantum break were both published and funded by MS. Mass Effect too. Same goes for Death Stranding, Spiderman and Bloodborne. I have no idea what you are talking and why you people continue to move goalposts. Your knowledge on games seems to be very limited and you are trying to find yourself outs when there arent any.

And this statement below was already proven false when i listed all the open world games by sony. And yet you continue to spout it like you struggle with reading comprehension.

They're cinematic linear single player games for the most part.

Dont turn it into some Gaas or crappy online game

Does Peter Molynoux still involved with it

I wouldn’t want Xbox to make games like TLOU or God of War anyway. Let PlayStation lead the cinematic, story driven experience.

They need some kind of exclusive though....
