Of all people, I honestly didn't expect him to say this. For those of you who don't know, Jez is a Windows Central writer & a Xbox Insider. When asked about the quality of exclusive games that have come to Playstation this generation & wishing Xbox would improve on the quality of their next gen exclusive games, Jez says he doesn't think Xbox will be able to deliver that type of content to gamers and you should get a Playstation instead.
I haven't played GOT yet so I can't say what sandbox elements it does or doesn't have. I don't know what random stuff it has but Horizon definitely does. The fact that you can take down the factions in different ways and tactics. And even get the robots to straight up fight each other. So that would share Days Gone's place in sandbox.I just feel like "open world" is a better descriptor for.. well.. open world games... and a game having an "open world" does not make it a sandbox game, or mean it even has sandbox elements. GTA for instance is a 3rd person story driven action game.. with some fun "sandbox" elements.. (a world you can fuck around in, cause car chases, etc.) It's not the open world that makes it a sandbox, it's the fact they included a lot of randomness in the open world that made it a sandbox.
I think it was you who used Ghosts of Tsushima as an example earlier in this thread and that's exactly what I'm talking about. There's really not much in the way of experimentation in that game or emergent gameplay.. it's a series of combat encounters where you have some choice, but that's almost every game with combat. Same with collecting items, or finding any of the 4-5 "check these off your list" things you can do (haiku, hot springs, etc.)
Days Gone on the other hand I see the sandbox elements with your ability to sort of create emergent scenarios by getting zombies to attack the enemy... or just fly around doing crazy shit with hoardes in general. GoT has none of that.. just has a few different activities you can do in a world that in the end is fairly structured and leaves no more experimenting than any game that has multiple weapons and a stealth element.
Essentially: games with large open worlds lend themselves to sandbox style gameplay, but the open world itself is not what makes them that way.
The high polish first party games complement the biggest money makers and diffetentiate their product. Yes, they're important.Do you guys really think that these exclusives are the biggest reason Sony sold so many consoles? What are the sales of said games? They seem to sell to what 5-10% of Sony gamers? I think third party games are actually the biggest reason. Sony made most of their money with PS4 on GaaS games. They have free online for F2P games. I think that those things were a bigger reason for their success.
I'm not saying they don't make a difference, I love them myself, but not as much as you all want to believe. CoD, Fortnite, etc have a much bigger casual fanbase than all of Sony's exclusives combined.
Aren't they, and their studios, also talking about letting the studios make whatever their creative talent wants?
This narrative that MS is forcing people into specific types of games seems to fly in the face of all of that.
I mean, maybe they are.. but I feel like someone they bought would say something at this point... instead it's all "MS is hands off, just gives us budget to do what we want."
I'd be shocked if at least one of their studios isn't directly targeting the types of games that Sony loves to make.. I mean didn't MS specifically poach a ton of talent from Sony studios?
I also think the idea that only GAAS games work for MS financially on Gamepass is flawed as well. Getting subscribers with big SP gmaes could be just as lucrative.. and beyond that.. MS is still in the business of selling $60 games.

And yeah, Open World probably has split off from Sandbox now to be fair, considering there are many varying styles of open world in the 20 years since GTA 3.
But now if it's a case of 'sandbox' is just a game where you can do anything you like within the scenario, then games like Surgeon Simulator or Job Simulator are probably the new gen sandboxes. And yeah... Too much of a blanket term lol.

Laughably reductive, like saying Forza or GT are just “driving from A to B”. There are obviously heaps of mechanics in regards to actually controlling the plane and dealing with weather, and before you come in with some “as if the casuals will deal with that” bullshit, you could say the exact same about people playing TLOU2 on what ever it’s easiest mode is.Nice try but TLoU is obviously a game, with objectives and gameplay mechanics.
Flight Simulator has none of that, you just fly from point A to point B. Or Excel and Word are games too .
I think they are important to us as hardcore gamers, but they have minimal effect on overall sales. The casuals who make up the bulk of the sales are playing 3rd party multiplayer games. I'm basing this on game sales. How many copies has Ghost of Tshushima sold? 5 million maybe? So about 4% of Sony console owners bought it? That's sad for such an amazing game.

Most of the top 10 sold games on PS4 are 1st party. Good chance Ghosts and TLOU2 make the top 10 by the time it's all said and done.
Would not be surprised that by end of the generation only GTA V and Witcher 3 remain in the PS4 top 10 that aren't 1st party.
This list is horribly inaccurate and there's many missing games, multiplats that is.This is crazy talk and not how any of that works lol

It's why Gamepass actually works in concept.Nice! I guess I am shocked and disappointed at how few games people actually buy. I guess it explains the bad attach rate of most consoles. Goddamn Bloodborne the GoTG or at least top 3 at 2 million. SMH.
Yeah I was going to call into question how accurate it is myself lolThis list is horribly inaccurate and there's many missing games, multiplats that is.
Black Ops 3 sold like 17 million, Red Dead Redemption 2 like 17 million and so on and so forth. Terrible list.
Wikipedia is not a source. You'll notice that pretty much every call of duty is missing from there. RDR2 is missing from there. This is crazy talk and not how any of that works lol

Update your post with context, don't waste people's time.Of all people, I honestly didn't expect him to say this. For those of you who don't know, Jez is a Windows Central writer & a Xbox Insider. You mean, you don't want MS to copy Sony, Nintendo, Rockstar, CD Project RED, etc right? Because making amazing single player games isn't just a Sony thing.
Animal Crossing sold 22 million units (no price drops) on a device with 63 million units sold worldwide...in 3 months.
Sony's exclusives are highly overrated in terms of market impact. They're missing the boat in terms of true mass appeal. Sony would be a fool to stick to games with such a limited ceiling.
It would be interesting to compare the budgets of Animal Crossing with The Last of Us II.
Ghost of Tsushima has been out for like 3 weeks... How would probably 5 million copies of a game sold right now be in anyway 'sad' when it's still currently selling?I think they are important to us as hardcore gamers, but they have minimal effect on overall sales. Fanboy or not, you have a shitty taste.so you assume I am a fanboy who thinks the games you mentioned should get high scores... well you're wrong.

Microsoft got the money, they got the most powerful next gen, we just want big AAA new IP on a similar level to what Sony put out on the PS4 and to some degree the PS3. Fable is cool, but probably won’t be out for another 2-3 years.
Right. Uptake ratio compared to number of systems. But as I said, only been 3 weeks. It has still got lots of time. Or if like me... Holding off until the PS5 comes out to get it then.111 million PS4 owners, that's how. It should be a must buy for every one of them, hahaha. Kind of how Animal Crossing sold to 33% of Switch owners. Tshushima should be essential. And yes, 5 million is great and I'm happy for SP but that's not my point. I am just wondering why all of these people even own a PS4 when they aren't buying the best things on them. So, don't be offended as if I am talking badly about my GoTG, I am talking crap about the vast majority of PS4 owners.
That's really all it is. Xbox gamers just prefer Xbox games for their brand of diversity, gameplay and visuals. I personally enjoy playing my games for months on end. I also enjoy playing single player games with stellar MP attached. Halo, Forza, FH, Gears, SoD, SoT etc. I dig that shit. And I like feeling like I'm getting my monies worth. I can't rock Sony games like that but, I can understand why others do. Its just not MY personal bag, and that's okay. They're just going a different way... for a different crowd.
I've been tough enough on their games but they have an audience and thinking about it, I shouldn't be dunking on the hard work of people at these studios. They have a vision and because it doesn't align with what I want, doesn't mean it has any less value to others.
I'm sure someone will say something disparaging PS5 in the next while and trigger me into saying some nonsense but I want any XBox users here to know I like you all and want you to have a great launch and enjoy every moment of your new console.
I get you bro. We need choice and diversity in approaches to gameplay...That's really all it is. Xbox gamers just prefer Xbox games for their brand of diversity, gameplay and visuals. This is funny because MS made its name on these cinematic single player experiences. what do you think Halo, Mass Effect, Max Payne, Gears, Alan Wake, and Quantum Break were? The day Microsoft just start aping Sony and focusing in cinematic single player “experiences” is the day I just switch to pc pretty much exclusively. That type of game just doesn’t appeal to me.
Same. I want to have gameplay focused games, otherwise i have Netflix. The day Microsoft just start aping Sony and focusing in cinematic single player “experiences” is the day I just switch to pc pretty much exclusively. That type of game just doesn’t appeal to me.
Halo and Gears didn't make their name on cinematic single player experiences lol. They made their name because of their multiplayer. Max Payne? MS didn't make their name on that lol. Alan Wake is third party also....same with Quantum Break. This is funny because MS made its name on these cinematic single player experiences. what do you think Halo, Mass Effect, Max Payne, Gears, Alan Wake, and Quantum Break were?
MS has lost their way. Halo and Gears are still cinematic experiences and just dont have the panache they used to. They are never in the goty conversations like they used to. They no longer define and redefine the genres like they used to.
Sony first party makes the same games everyone is out there making. Open world sandbox with story modes. Uncharted and TLOU are pretty much the only linear games left. The only difference is that they do it better than everyone else. Better visuals, better combat, and better story.
To reduce Sony games as cinematic single player experiences is nonsensical and exposes a poster's bias. They clearly havent played these games. Days Gone, Death Stranding, Spiderman, Bloodborne, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, GoW are all open world games that are leagues ahead of ubisoft open world trash and right up with there Witcher 3 and RDR2 as some of the best open world games. Detroit, Last Guardian and Until Dawn are the only games that qualify as cinematic single player experiences. The rest are fun to play with some of the best combat and gameplay in the industry.
Yes, Finish the fight slogan was for multiplayer. Sure. The entire marketing campaigns of halo games revolved around the story mode.Halo and Gears didn't make their name on cinematic single player experiences lol. They made their name because of their multiplayer. Max Payne? MS didn't make their name on that lol. Alan Wake is third party also....same with Quantum Break.
Sony didn't make Death Stranding, or Spiderman, or BloodBorne btw.
You think Sony single player games are much more than they are. They're cinematic linear single player games for the most part. You say I'm showing my bias, but you're doing the exact same.
They're cinematic linear single player games for the most part.
SOE EverquestMicrosoft are doing Age of Empires IV. Sony don't give a shit about strategy games, let alone RTS games. So it's not the worst thing that Microsoft are doing their own thing and not chasing after Sony.
Everquest is an MMORPG and not an RTS or a Strategy game...SOE Everquest
Lords of EverquestEverquest is an MMORPG and not an RTS or a Strategy game...
