PS5 Sales Expected to ‘Significantly Outperform’ Xbox Series X, Says DFC Intelligence

Nvidia's monopoly in the PC market is frankly disgusting. I don't want that kind of stuff in the console space. I want Xbox to retaliate hard tbh. But their whole gamepass shovel ware strategy is not the way to go. It will take time, but winning people over with good exclusives is the only right way forward.
Let's hope AMD bring the heat later this year, or the 3000 is going to be prices even more outrageously.

MS has enough cash to buy the entire Sony company and still have 40 billion left last I looked.

When will you people are going to realize that Xbox doesn't have all of Microsoft's mooney at their disposal?

I think the bolder prediction is that both consoles will significantly underperform, outside of their initial burst of sales.

Too soon to say this. While PlayStation is the bigger brand worldwide, price and other factors could push the balance

It won’t be, but I imagine it would influence a lot of the younger ones who love GTA online.
More casual gamers, who just buy Fifa, COD and GTA.... GTA launches are always massive. But I always cringe at the type of people it brings out. (Not all of them, just a subset)

In the console gaming industry they would be plus I'm sure there are anti competition laws that stop that from happening.

Also there's this.

People saying this are just fantasizing the elimination of a competitor through a hostile takeover.

Honestly I wouldn’t be happy about it but I’m pretty sure it would not be classified as a monopoly.

A rather sad attitude imo

Not yours, Microsoft’s.

They can compete they showed glimpses of it during the 360. Xbox’s biggest problem is Microsoft itself at times.

A brand with tons of potential not being met but this group running the division are liked by many core fans it seems so my opinion is a fart in the wind really when it comes to wanting change.

The problem is Playstation brand and marketing from the PS3 days is not the same as it is today. They've built on the brand massively since then and with their studios pumping out countless great exclusives since then, mindshare is very lopsided outside of US.

PS has also moved to be recognised as an even more integral and vital business to Sony. If Xbox tried to bring the big guns to the battle, Sony would raise the stakes above that, as they literally can't afford to lose in this business.

Yeah, nobody really knew the PlayStation owned studios back in the PS2 and early PS3 days..... now, I see loads of more casual people saying they love Sucker Punch and equivalent things....

Despite some periods of straight up arrogance, I just feel PlayStation has rarely forgotten the main audience and has built a brand over the years by not trying to fix too much that doesn’t need fixing in a console market.

Meanwhile Microsoft seems to take one step forward and two back all too often and it’s really affected Xbox in the past . Now the new strategy is “how do we reach 2 billion gamers” and we have Gamepass & XCloud. I think it’s rather telling they only bolstered their first party significantly after starting to push a subscription service and if you watch that Showcase, clearly a lot of games are not ready and are years out , which after gaps in releases and some questionable quality the past few years, what the fuck has been going on there.

You may disagree and that’s cool, I just feel that if the strategy was there like PlayStation and Xbox had the right people to execute it, they would compete with Sony.

Itll be a landslide victory because Microsoft is terrible at communicating the product.

XSX is marketed as this powerhouse console but has failed to demonstrate its power at all. In fact., its flagship game looks like an unfinished current gen game. The whole message is confusing.
We know more about the Series X than the PS5 and the machines launch in 3 months. What planet are you living on?

Don't be naive, it's about getting perspective of what the two companies are trying to get from their game businesses and how that relates to the rest of their businesses.

Sony console warriors dont know how lucky they are to have such a successful company like MS in the console market, MS position as underdog who is agressively trying to gain market shares is like a blowtorch on the industry. Gamers with limited money who have to choose a team still see the benefits, whether its new models like gamepass or big budget efforts from first party studios from both companies.

No one wants a situation where one brand owns the market and can charge what ever they want and basically just be a rent seeker and not innovate. i.e. Nintendo in the hand held market

Look I own a switch and finished BOTW, but the state of that ecosystem is terrible, yes they make money but apart from a few great games they dont give their fans very much.

EDIT: probably much better examples than Nintendo of rent seeking monopolistic behavior.... oh well

No one mentioning the XSS. Is she ded? The gap won't widen if it exists. Still failing to see how the millions of console buyers are turning into PC gamers

Why not 50:1?

If MS console business was in that bad a shape they could always just buy Sony.

MS has enough cash to buy the entire Sony company and still have 40 billion left last I looked.

Doubt they would want to, but puts things in perspective.
According to the articles to which the links below lead, Microsoft is worth one trillion dollars and Sony is worth 78.7 billion dollars. So, wouldn't Microsoft have over 900 billion dollars left?

I was just talking cash in the bank, MS has something like $140 billion saved for a rainy.

It was just an attempt to put things in perspective for those who think Sony is more than it is. i.e. Sony struggling overall while MS booming

Honestly unless you’re a die hard Xbox fan, there is no compelling reason to get a Series X at the moment.

Of course the PS5 will significantly outsell the Series X. Anyone with a shred of intelligence and common sense knows this.

For those that think each generation starts off on equal footing, answer me this:

Which phone will sell more, the iPhone 12 or the next OnePlus flagship phone?

The reason why the iPhone will sell more is the same reason why the PS5 will sell more than the XSX.

Anyone expecting the XSX to get even remotely close is delusional.

Yes I agree they could certainly compete better, with the right motivation and strategy they could 'dominate' the console market and change places with Playstation. But at the same time, this is MS and therefore it's not realistic. Because it being MS, gaming will never, ever be as integral to their bottom line as Playstation is to Sony (a 1/3rd of their business or more), MS is so rich from other avenues, success in gaming is not critical and I would even say it's closer to a side venture than critical business for the company. The bosses at Xbox would disagree, but for Nadella and MS as a wider company, gaming is not very important.

On the studios point, this is an example of how MS doesn't place critical importance on strategy or execution for Xbox. If they wanted to try to dominate next gen, they would have acquired those studios 3+ years ago, so they'd be ready for Series X titles at the start or close to it of the new gen. As it is, we'll be waiting 1, 2 or 3 years for most of these new games as for some reason they only acquired them a year ago, even when it was known game development takes 3 years minimum and next gen begins in 2020.

Shocking prediction.

lol

(I suspect they are wrong, and rather than the 2:1 trend to continue it'll be more like 3:!)

1. What makes you say that Sony is struggling? I know that they were struggling years ago due to some of their divisions no longer being profitable, but I was under the impression that they either sold those divisions or shut them down. Haven't things improved?

2. How much readily available cash does Sony have?

Forbes said:
DFC Intelligence recently released a statement and forecast for next-gen consoles,
saying that it expects the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 to be delayed out of their current holiday 2020 launch
,
citing widespread global uncertainty about the spread of the virus:

“Coronavirus is likely to have a major short-term impact on the delivery of both systems.
There is a strong likelihood one or both systems will not make a 2020 launch.
If the systems do launch, supply will likely be constrained and
initial pricing could be higher than expected.

Let's see how much these "industry analysis specialists" predictions are worth

Well, I'm buying something this holiday season. If I can't buy a PlayStation 5, then I'll buy a newborn baby off the black market and name it "PlayStation 5."

Can't decide which fanboys are worse
All fanboys or at least the militant ones are annoying.

It also changes generation to generation. The most annoying ones are usually Nintendo ones to me though.

I'd consider myself a Nintendo fan but the fans have the wort apologists I've ever seen at times.

Do you think the 2:1 will continue next gen?

I think MS has made great strides in bolstering their studios, improving GamePass, and I get the feeling that a $299 (or less) Lockhart's going to be more impactful than people realize.

NeoGAF is giving me strong Vita / Wii vibes (way off) for XBox right now.

Well, no, actually I don't think it'll be 2 to 1 again. I do think PS5 will outsell XSX, but I don't think it'll reach the 2 to 1 levels we saw this gen. Xbox is in a stronger position this time around, so it should work out differently:

- MS didn't have a great reveal, but it was nowhere near the disaster of the Xbox One reveal.

- They've had the more powerful console for three years now, and they're going to continue holding that crown next gen. That always helps with the hardcore. I think the XSX vs. PS5 differences will be much less remarkable than the X1X vs. Pro differences, but it still helps to have hardware bragging rights. It's certainly a lot better than the start of this gen, when they charged more for an inferior piece of hardware.

- Gamepass is a popular offering

- Their new studios will eventually deliver. It might be a few years, but late is better than never, and never is what we got this gen (well, very little)

They're in a better position, so the ratio should be less than 2 to 1. If I had to just hazard a guess, I'd say 1.5 to 1. I'm no analyst, though, so that's just me throwing out a guess.

We still don't know about pricing, and that could be a factor. What if one console is priced $100 less than the other? That could make a difference.

p.s. I agree that many people on the forum seem to be blowing Sony's dominance way out of proportion.

More Japanese/Asian IPs... even if it's going to be a port, they need it. If so, a lot of Asians like me would jump in more readily.
