Ghost of Tsushima |OT| - Summer blade cuts through, the PlayStation shall go on, this is its swan song

I love this game. I'm about a little less than 1/2 way through Act III. I'm pretty sure I have completed all side missions because a trophy popped up saying so.
I have all techniques unlocked and everything upgraded.
I fear the end game is going to be a bit of a slog.

So, for all its praises, I'll list the things I don't like or wish were changed:

1. Travelling with NPCs, I spent about 7-10 minutes on horseback listening to the old woman drone on about how she hates her sister (in Japanese no less). I didn't care, I just wanted to get to the destination and fight somebody. If you won't allow me to skip this (I remember a game having a "skip to destination" button), at least put my horse on auto pilot so I can get a drink.
2. Cutscenes should be skippable. No excuse for that.
3. The game needs Gear sets/Transmogs, whatever you call it. If a mission works better as an archer, let me select my Archer build. If stealth, etc. In Act II, I happily changed the different sets. In Act III, I'm so OP, I don't want to futz around for 5 minutes trying to find the right charm through a list of about 50. I'll just wade into any situation with my Ghost build which defeats the purpose. Not sure how this didn't get past testing.
4. Not enough Techniques/abilities. I'm maxed out so there is little reason to beat a camp with the special objective or bother with a random encounter. They should have taken about 1/2 of the charms and made them techniques, like poison windchimes or hallucination 50% stronger, etc.
5. Craftable ammo. No big deal but it would be nice to be able to use the buttload of supplies I have no use for anymore. I waste time travelling to a Trapper before a mission.
6. I hate, HATE, the investigation missions which seem to be more active in the later game. I'm not a novice to these coming from ACreed games but 1/2 the time I don't know what the game wants me to do. I just run around in a circle until i get out of the investigate zone.
7. Small nit, the Traveller's suit rumbles when you are close to a collectible but I have no idea how to find it unless I stumble on it. There was another game that did this mechanic better, like it should stop rumbling if you aren't in the same direction, etc. Even better, let me see the outline of it in listen mode if I am wearing the suit. I just give up after awhile.

How can I determine how many hours I've spent playing the game so far? Also, how close to the end am I? I just completed the mission in which you and Lord Shimura clear a village of Mongols and then ignite a light house; this happens a bit after...
you fight Ryuzo

Anyone else think the feminist themes in the game are a bit too much? There are constant female warriors, all of them very powerful, and there's even a little old lady who fights and kills giant Mongolian men.

Very obvious agenda tbh. That's fine, make the game you want to make, but it's a bit silly they were pretending this was 'grounded in realism.'

Also, none of the "female" characters are remotely attractive.

No, I'm talking about Dance of the Wrath.

Don't know what Ghost Stance is. Probably haven't unlock it yet.

Whoops. Won't say anymore since it may spoil you. But you'll know what the Ghost Stance is once you see it.

EDIT:

Can we not go down this route complaining about feminism whenever a game features women? Not everything is agenda driven and Ghost of Tsushima handles it's female characters well within the story.

You're around the halfway mark. There are still acts 2 and 3 to go. but they're shorter (in terms of main story anyway, there's quite a lot of side stuff to do especially in the second act).

Assuming a Mongol invasion, wouldn't it stand to reason many of the men have fallen in the battlefield/general carnage?

No, I don't feel as if there's a feminist agenda at all. I think that your socio-political views are clouding your perception of the game.

The game definitely has a feminist agenda. Every female character is portrayed as strong and powerful, and even more capable than them.

Seems to be a recurring theme in Sony first party games. Horizon, Last of Us, and now this.

LOL, all of the warriors are portrayed as strong and powerful, whether they're male or female. What are you talking about?

The hardest duels are all male strawhats. The sensei is male, the females are usually estranged, due to the war. I think all the mythic tales are also men.

Think you're loomimg too hard for this. But the point in general is ok just not applicable to this game

That's not true. Plenty of the male characters are depicted as weak or cowardly. Every single female character is powerful and a Mary Sue.

Finally got my copy in. Liking it so far. One thing I'm not thrilled with is the archery combat. Doesn't feel as good as something like Botw or Horizon.

I'm talking about the females you see in the main story.

Without exception, they're all ugly and all ultra powerful Mary Sues.

I'm just into Act III, the game is great but has some short falls. For me it's a 9/19 game, what's missing?
-Can't skip cutscenes
-Investigation missions are terrible
-Not enough upgrades, it needs double the amount of upgrades. This is my biggest disappointment
-Stealth can be frustrating at times, the assassinations get boring to watch, they need way more variety
-Archers annoy me, the focus ability when in archer mode needs to recharge way faster, it seems unfair to me how good the AI aim is from the archers up in the towers. I've been killed a few times by a single last archer in a tower
-I wish there were different swords, not just cosmetic stuff, but different sword upgrades with different pros/cons

Who? Name them. How are the stories and feats mary sues? What men do they beat? How do they overwhelm the mens stories, strawhats and mythic tales?

Oh stop with that socio political view bullshit you don't know him. He just had an opinion, deal with it.

No I don't think this game had any agenda in the way TLOU2 did, I thought the female characters were well thought out with great backstories that went with the plot perfectly

It's all of the side quests, and two of them are "hidden" (you just have to stumble upon them - I was stuck with this too, scroll back a bit to find out what they are so you can google them if needed). As for the duels, one of them is related to the main story and unmissable.

There is one Side story people tend to miss. Its south of the temple in the third region. There is a bird flying around near the road that takes you to it. It was the only one I missed.

Duels can't be missed, they're all tied to either the obvious quests or camps. If you did all those, you have all duels. Jinroku probably counts as a duel too.

I lol'd there when he ran away. I kept running after him and he seems to go over the entire map lol.

This was a fun and easy platinum. Just clear all the red dots and you get the full map. Then grind the question marks you didn't do yet. The traveler gear helps a great deal with artifacts and records. And you only need 20 of each anyway. The artifacts are in the camps, I pretty much had enough by looting the camps after routing them. The records are in the settlements, and the traveler gear will vibrate when close to them. They're almost always in houses. With the gear on Jin's arrow icon points to where the closest records are, which is usually a settlement.

The tricky part was that I had some Shrine icons on not complete without knowing, but the exploration perks points you to them.

The hidden shrines I didn't know about, but they're always at a village pier or cemetery. And some of those pillars that give dyes.

If the shrine (or any other discovered map marker) is not yet complete, it will show as white on the map; if it's gray if it's complete. But granted, the visual difference could be bigger.

Yeah it wasn't as obvious as I'd liked it to be. The same with quest markers in settlements, they almost completely overlap if you want to fast travel to it.

In Kurosawa mode its even worse. I would advise against this mode if you want to complete the map. Its an awesome feature though.

Agree with a lot but not the dialogue options - I presume you're listing Masako's story - if it's a side mission, you kind of sign up to that exposition since you're invested in that character but a skip to destination button would be great for a NG + playthough.

Definitely agree about the armor transmog sets, it's tedious to swap out all the charms/armor customizations.
I like that some charms are stronger than others though - keeps it fresh when you go into a fort and get like 8 free kills by throwing windchimes and other forts you go in and pull a samurai champloo on their ass.

I assume a NG+ patch will/should include this similar to GoW.

Yeah agreed with all of the above; basically sums up my negative thoughts well.

Charms were particularly disappointing to me.. also badly need to be able to sell them. the combination of having to go through a giant list every time and them just not being that useful in the first place had me just ignoring them the second half of the game.

The game was still great fun, but all of the above kind of combine for it not being replayable to me. I got plenty of fun from the game for my $60 so I'm happy either way, but there was a good ~30% of my time I was just kind of annoyed.

Hilariously I started up Days Gone yesterday and within an hour I was doing some of the same annoying crap lol.. "stare at ground looking for glowing footrpints!" Is this supposed to be fun?

But that game does allow you to skip past "force you to walk and talk" dialog.

Just finished the game. My favorite game since RDR2 and a 10/10 in my opinion. Yes, the game has flaws but they feel so minuscule in comparison to the vast majority of things the game does right that this is the situation where I would consider a game a 10.

All of its elements - the best rendition of the Arkham/AC combat ever, compelling exploration motivated by beautiful art direction and meaningful innovations to the open-world formula, unique side quests besides collectibles and clearing bases, and a great story - are combined in such a way that makes for a memorable experience and a truly fun game.

I also found the story in the game to be massively underrated by reviewers. I liked all of the characters in the game, understood their viewpoints, and felt that character side-tales especially were surprising in quality (I enjoyed them as much as the main story). It's a compelling tale about the purpose/nature of the values of a society. Should a society do what it must to survive, even if it means changing its identity? Do values, which are by nature conceptual, only exist to protect something that is tangible? If so, perhaps traditions are less important than what they were originally enacted to protect. That is what I got from the story in this game.

I can't help but compare my retrospection on this game to that of mine towards TLOUII, which felt so thematically bankrupt that I felt I was left with nothing after finishing it. Except a feeling of, "I'm really glad that source of stress is gone. Now I can finally play video games and relax for a bit!"

GOTsu was that game, and I couldn't imagine a better title to make me view the future of gaming with optimism again.

Also I played the game on Hard for Act !, then Lethal for Acts II and III, with minimal HUD, which I would recommend.

Coming up on the end of Act 2. Doing all the sidestories and I was a little surprised how nearly all of them end in tragedy. Then this woman asks me to find her daughter and I'm like, she's probably dead. Only, this time both the quest giver and her daughter made it out alive.
th

Overall, I'm liking the game. So far, I'd give it a 7.

Very obvious agenda tbh. That's fine, make the game you want to make, but it's a bit silly they were pretending this was 'grounded in realism.'

Also, none of the "female" characters are remotely attractive.
Does anyone know what exactly he was talking about?
I dont remember any little old ladies fighting mongols.
And of the top of my head i remember only three female characters fighting, Yuna, Tomoe and Lady Adashi.

Just got the last few forts to finish up and some side quests. Feeling a little like a chore now for the clean up but that's my choice and at least the end is easily in sight. Probably the best balanced open world game I've played and I think that is largely down to design decisions not frustrating the player. Oh, you climbed that shrine to get the charm. OK we'll stick a descend button on there so you don't spend another 5/10 minutes having to retrace steps - I know, I know 'realism' but this is so much better and an easy way to not get burnt out or kill player enthusiasm. Oh, you want to ride through that bambo forest and not get thrown/caught on little saplings - well you can just clip through the smaller ones.

I think Lethal is a nice addition, but I think hard is too easy to escape difficult situations. Most of my kills where simply down to trying to technically perfect the encounter. For the end game boss fight I would have preferred..

...the dual with the Khan to just be a duel. I didn't like the ship fight with the adds and archers.

I think uncovering all the map when the forts are done was a good idea too and I liked the fog of war, it didn't overwhelm me like in the Witcher/Ubi seeing '?' everywhere and thinking:

I liked how it had multiple levels and you had to adjust, also how his weapons changed, I just felt it was a bit too easy on hard so it didn't feel quite as climactic, however it was nice to see how much my skills and abilities grew from when he totally demolished me in the beginning of the game

Update 1.06 downloading. It makes the Traveller's Attire a bit better which I used until I got the Ronin Attire.

It doesn't get any cooler than wearing Ronin and having Kurosawa mode :messenger_sunglasses:

I think what makes this open world work so well, are the extremely short load times. Its not a pain to change regions for a missed item. I think everyone knows what i'm talking about when they found a Fox Den, and then lost track of the Fox. Its quicker to just hit the map, and triangle on the icon. Within seconds you're next to the fox.

Also dying isn't bad, if its randoms on the road they're simply gone and you continue as if nothing happened. Forts are different, they seem to warp you out but the defeated enemies are gone? Not always though, it seems.

Its all very painless and it makes next-gen compelling as load times are promised to be pretty much eliminated there. TW3 is probably my GOTG, but the reason I skipped some old stuff was simply because I didn't want to sit through loading screens. Dying was much more of a pain there as well.

Loading in this game is basically next-gen loading. I wonder if it is already using Kraken + oodle texture (I think they are both available for Ps4 too, but without dedicated hw for decompression).

Well ofcourse the game isn't as deep as Skyrim and TW3. Those games remember how you treated NPC's, which places you're branded a criminal, where you dropped items etc. But for how the game looks and how big the open world is, its still impressive. I think Horizon is comparable in scope and that loads quite a bit worse.

Speaking of the witcher, its been causing me an issue in GOT. In the witcher, you press x to get your horse to go faster. In GOT, pressing x on your horse causes you to jump off. Being the idiot I am, I keep wanting to press x to go faster, only to jump off my horse like an idiot.
