Disclaimer: Halo: Infinite was running on a PC, and at this point it's not clear what other games were running on
*Everwild is in pre-production, and has no decided gameplay loop yet

Since these games are all work-in-progress, these categories are rather fluid. Some stuff may turn out to have been a cutscene, or a in-game to have shown final gameplay. It's just a matter of what they looked like at the shows, and things may obviously change, for better or worse.

Gameplay: I was very generous here, and put in anything with even a little gameplay, showing a player's POV and camera. I earmarked (') games that had very little gameplay, or heavily edited, making it somewhat harder to follow
In-game trailer: an in-engine + on-platform trailer, close to gameplay but without a player POV; it should be similar to playing with a free-camera in a final release
In-engine trailer: uses the engine to craft a video; it's not close to playable (Forza is at 30fps rather than the confirmed 60, NBA shows no other players); in NBA's case it's on-platform
CGI trailer: neither on-platform nor in-engine, not at all representative of final release; a fantasy version of what the game might make you feel
Absolutely nothing: the game has a segment, yet nothing new whatsoever is shown about it

EDIT: By popular demand I decided to highlight a few new things.
Bolded games are first-party developed/published exclusives. Those aren't coming to any other system (except PC in XBox's case).
(+) indicates a game that was not previously announced. I'm obviously not counting leaks.

An awesome collection of games there. It's a good time to be a gamer.

But... how times have gamers said they'd rather see gameplay.

Were any games actually running on XSX hardware?

Is a single game running on Series X?

Another example of Microsoft promising but not showing. They been doing this for 5 years and their fanbase eat that shit up.

I'm getting flashbacks
Phantom Dust CG trailer - turns out to be nothing
ReCore from the creators of Metroid Prime - turns out to be B level average game
Scalebound - cancelled
Fable Legends - cancelled

It just doesn't make any sense why should we trust Microsoft without them showing gameplay. All these games look like fall 2022 games and even if they do come out there is no guarantee they will even deliver. Will people buy a Series X based on promises.

I think they understand it just fine. Certainly MS does now after the Infinite fiasco. We are the reason they don't show more gameplay of unfinished games.

Unfinished? The game is lanching in 4 months. The Last of Us 2 which broke sales records for Sony showed long gameplay. Ghost of Tsushima which also broke sales records showed long gameplay. Both companies were “in the middle of a global pandemic” when they showed those games so the pandemic is not exclusive to Microsoft Yet you want me to believe showing “gameplay” is the problem?

I'm not making excuses for what they showed, simply pointing out how risky it can be to do so.

If you want a fair representation of the XSX/PS5 games story so far you should really tally all the games they have shown to date. PS opted to show one big PS5 blowout so far (that I'm aware of, admittedly I don't follow PS closely), while Xbox has had at least 3 reveals (3rd party show, Summer Game Fest show [AKA Showcase pre-show] and Showcase). You are only showing part of the XSX picture. Xbox also released an ID@Xbox video of 15 titles coming to XSX, and a list of at least 5 Xbox Game Studios titles that will be optimized for XSX and available on launch.

This, beside being massively less readable than mine, has 0 info on PS5 and is as such pretty useless.
It's a neverending list of barely known stuff, a whole bunch of which is also coming to other platforms. Thanks, but no.

It also lists Gears Tactics as iconic, which, lol

I don't get why both companies are so shy to show off the gameplay 4 months from launch.
At least Sony showed some impressive next gen gameplay (even if they were a bit stingy with it)

MS on the other hand really fucked up. They called their even a 'showcase' and kept on talking about their superior hardware but were scared to show much real gameplay off. The gameplay they did show looked pretty weak as well.

Can someone exclude all the time exclusives and multiplatform games as well as currently released games which are just enhanced. And basically do a showdown between the Sony published and Microsoft published games.

How many Sony published games showed ganeplay/CG in comparison to how Microsoft published games showed gameplay/CG.

Sony Gameplay
Spiderman Miles Morales
Gran Turismo 7
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart
Returnal
Destruction Allstars
Sackboy

In Engine
Horizon Forbidden West
Demon Souls Remake

CG
None

Microsoft Gameplay
Halo Infinite
Psychonauts 2

In Engine
Forza
Everwild
Hellblade 2

CG
Fable
State of Decay 3
Avowed

That's a stark difference between the 2. Sony games just seem farther along. And even though Horizon Forbidden West was in engine they atleast said it's coming in 2021. Even Demon Souls which had no gameplay I wouldn't be shocked if it comes before fall 2021.

However Microsoft stuff just seems early. There is a rumour with Everwild is so early they don't even know the gameplay loop for the game. That in engine trailer of Forza with the message just saying in development makes me think that's far as well. Then let's get to the CG stuff, let's be honest all that is fall 2022 the earliest if not even that most likely 2023 or further out.

Now let's look at Sony Spiderman is confirmed for this holiday, Ratchet we seen enough gameplay and it's been a while since the last one I wouldn't be shocked if it's 2021. Returnal and Destruction Allstars also has had gameplay so 2021 can happen with both especially as these are not AAA, same for Sackboy. Polyphony are a joke so with Gran Turismo 7 you don't know probably far out but then we have had gameplay and if they reuse car models perhaps they can pull off fall 2021. Horizon they confirmed they are aiming for 2021. That leaves Demon's Souls, it's been a while since Shadow of Collosus so a fall 2021 is possible.

Everwild, Avowed, Hellblade 2, State of Decay 3 could have just been shown so early cause they have nothing to show, similar to when they showed off Phantom Dust, Crackdown and etc so early cause they had nothing to show. I can see those games being so far of they will be competing with San Diego Uncharted, God of War 2 Reboot, Naughty Dogs next game and etc.

I find it unbelievably rude to come to other people's threads and try and spam a copy-pasted list.

If you want to contribute, put effort.

Looks, like he was trying to help the OP. Not sure why you take offence to this,
It's a literal copy pasted list from another article, which another user already posted here. They also made no effort to include any information about PS5 titles, or on how any of the games were presented, or add their own methodology.

If all you can do is ctrl C+V a list of stuff, without even bothering to check if it was posted already, it's not helpful.

I didn’t see a lot of the games listed in the OP, so it helped me.

There are a lot more games coming then people are talking about.

I appreciate him pointing that out, even if you don’t.

This, beside being massively less readable than mine, has 0 info on PS5 and is as such pretty useless.
It's a neverending list of barely known stuff, a whole bunch of which is also coming to other platforms. Thanks, but no.

It also lists Gears Tactics as iconic, which, lol
'An objective look' Ahh, that's comedy gold!

Your list is incomplete without the additional titles mentioned. I guess you just objectively forgot about those.

Also, if you're not including stuff that is coming to other platforms then you've got a whole bunch of stuff in your list which is, objectively, wrong.

The overwhelming majority of those games are multi-platform, they just happened to be shown close, not even at, an XBox event.

The purpose here was to provide an immediate comparison between two one hour events, both game showcases, both for next-gen, both chiefly featuring exclusives, releasing one month within one another.
I can also google stuff, and could have added the past Inside XBox, the past State of Play, the 9 PlayStation Indies, Nintendo directs etc. but it would have made for a bloated mess of a list, and given little clarification about either company's approach.

Even so, I would have welcomed a list if it had any methodology. Once you start counting anything shown "close to XBox" irrespective of where it's releasing (Balan and DQ11S are on literally everything), then you need to add clarifiers as to exclusivity, or utilize a different approach from my own.
Tunic is XBox exclusive for example, but DQ11S isn't. A person may just look at the latter and assume the former is also going multiplatform, making the list utterly unhelpful and confusing.

As I said above, I'm comparing the two events given their similarity in approach, length, aim, and release schedule.
Extending it to stuff that was shown outside of those, especially when it's not at all exclusive, is unhelpful for either side.
From the title, it was clearly about those showcases, and meant to highlight at a quick glance why people felt the way they did about each showcase.

By my most generous estimate, half of the games at XBox had no gameplay whatsoever. Sony fared better, but you can see how I earmarked more of those, especially for the big titles.

There's plenty you could change about my approach, or stuff you could add.
I didn't highlight exclusivity, because the nature of those deals is not 100% clear yet (is Ghostwire coming to xbox, or STALKER 2 to PS5, for example).
I didn't highlight what was a new announcement or a rehash, or targeted performance, or other info. It's meant to be a quick look at "how" games were presented.

Still, since it's been brought up, I'll highlight first-party exclusives not coming to other systems.
I felt it was punching down, so just don't complain when it turns out 3/5 of the new announcements from XBox were CGI.

There has been more then two shows. so what's so special about the two you've chosen to concentrate on? You're cherry-picking to suit an agenda by leaving out a large number of games that are console exclusive to Xbox (timed or otherwise) and now writing walls of text to kick up a cloud when called on it.

'Punching down', oh geez.

Those two conferences are essentially the main blowouts for the respective next gen consoles, they are basically what the E3 conferences would have been had it happened (and if Sony were to actually attend).

It's a perfectly fair comparison.

If you want to do comparisons comparing everything and anything for the two consoles then make a new thread instead of harassing the OP.

Xbox XSX 3rd party event reveals:
  • Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
  • Madden NFL 21
  • Yakuza: Like A Dragon
  • The Medium
  • The Ascent
  • Dirt 5
  • Bright Memory: Infinite
  • Scorn
  • Chorus
  • Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2
  • Call Of The Sea
  • Scarlet Nexus
  • Second Extinction
The Xbox showcase pre-show revealed these titles for XSX:
Xbox have also released this video of 15 'first on console to Xbox' titles for the XSX:

- 12 Minutes (Luis Antonio / Annapurna, 2020)
- Dead Static Drive (Team Fanclub, 2021)
- Exo One (Future Friends Games, 2020)
- Lake (Whitethorn, 2021)
- Last Stop (Annapurna, 2021)
- Mad Streets (Craftshop Arts, 2020)
- Sable (Shedwords / Raw Fury)
- Shredders (FoamPunch BV / I-Illusions, 2021)
- Song of Iron (Escape, 2021)
- The Artful Escape (Beethoven and Dinosaur / Annapurna, 2020)
- The Ascent (Curve Digital/Neon Giant, 2021) *****[REPEATED ABOVE]*****
- The Big Con (Mighty Yell Studios, 2021)
- The Falconeer (Wired Productions/Tomas Sala, 2020)
- Tunic (Finji/Andrew Shouldice)
- Unexplored 2: The Wayfarer’s Legacy (Big Sugar, 2021)

  • Ori and the Will of the Wisps Optimized for Xbox Series X (Xbox Game Studios – Moon Studios – Holiday 2020)

  • Destiny 2: Beyond Light (Bungie – November 10, 2020)
  • Everwild (Xbox Game Studios – Rare)
  • Grounded (Xbox Game Studios – Obsidian Entertainment – July 28, 2020)
  • The Medium (Bloober Team – Holiday 2020)

  • Psychonauts 2 (Xbox Game Studios – Double Fine)
  • Tell Me Why (Xbox Game Studios – Dontnod Entertainment – August 27)

I know, right? Xbox showed more unique and interesting games, not the same 3rd person action games.

They have different varieties of genres. Sony only has one game on Launch and that's Spiderman Standalone DLC, I mean... 2 games including Astrobots.

Ops comparison is kinda cringe worthy at best since he obviously thinks GTA V is a system seller on next gen consoles when Epic has been giving the game away for free on the PC.

Microsoft showed more exclusive games than just Halo. Sony's console showcase was all about 3rd Party games that will be best played on Xbox Series X.

OP titled this thread an 'objective' look, which it isn't.
The list, and anything else on this site, is open to fair and reasonable criticism.

Were any games actually running on XSX hardware?
Doesn't even matter because nothing blew us away graphically, but usually they show games on the best platform whether it be PS4 Pro or One X. So these were probably on PC because they have PC versions.

I'm absolutely not cherry-picking anything. I listed all games announced at each show, as well as timed-exclusives.
In fact, if you bothered to check you'd count more highlighted exclusives for XBox's show...

I used these because they were:
1) The major software showcases for each company
2) Primarily focused on next-gen titles, and experiences coming exclusively/first on their systems
3) Were of similar length and scope
4) Were very similar in how they presented content, just a series of trailers

I made no comment about the quality of either show or offer, and I clearly laid down my methodology for people to disagree with.
You've chosen to ignore it, and pretend I have an agenda by "listing the games presented and how they were shown".
I'm sorry that looking at the actual shows themselves, not at multiplatform games that were announced near them, makes it look to you as if XBox has no games, something which I never claimed from the graph.

MS just need to show a next gen tech demo.
Forza was close.
But we need a longer tech demo.
Even getting UE5 running on SX next month is enough to get hyped
