Sony invests $250 million in Epic Games

Epic is worth over 17billion. This is nothing really comparable to SE back then.

This is just Sony spending money for security and more free marketing/association, which is odd because Xbox exclusives use UE5 way more than Sony does.

Could be a way for them to get Epic to support the PS5s I/O more with their engine. Which in the end could lead to alot of Unreal Engine games being optimized for it.

Just my guess.

Tencent already owns 40% of Epic Games.

Tencent and Sony made big joint investment in gaming and music together before this.

I wonder how much Tencent stake in Sony is?

With this recent investment Tencent (Chinese government) is probably the majority owner instead of Tim Sweeny.

Tencent is looking to invest a stupid sum of money in the animation and manga industry, but some authors fear selling their licenses knowing Tencent will probably censor the shit out of it.

Is Micrososft planning to move all of their games to the slip space engine? I am not technical enough to know how possible that might be but I would be done using the Unreal Engine if I was Mocrosoft.

This explains why Epic has gone out of their way to praise Sony. It always goes back to money.

Na i dont think so.

Sony already pay MS to use Azure servers for example. MS pay Epic to use unreal engine. This is common stuff.

Epic is designing UE5 around PS5-hardware. It's fundamental to the engine's development, so this deal doesn't come as a surprise.

I thought Epic had a lot of input into designing the PS5? I was under the impression all the "we designed it around what Devs asked for" was refering to Epic?
Not sure why I thought this

Sony is the best company ever and the PS5 will literally change the face of the earth (it'll flip, water will become soil, soil will become water!). On a completely unrelated note Sony, I've got some shares of my company to unload, interested?

Funny thing is, while the xbox fans are cheering, UE5 will be designed to make full use of PS5 hardware and game assets will scale down to XSX standards for Xbox games.

Could be, my posts wasn't to contradict what you said.
Epic is a big player, so I'm sure they played a large role into Cerny's design.
PS4 was designed the same way, based on developer wishes as Cerny asked them what they wanted to see.

You don't have to be a so called xbox fanboy to realize what's up between epic and sony, dude. It's called not being blind and knowing how business works.

Lol at people thinking this is just for PR
You don't invest 250 million just for PR, let's hope not a lot of next gen games use UE4/5

I'm wondering if any of the studios included in the WB Games package have their own versatile and excellent game engine. That could make that deal a little sweeter right about now.

Why would Epic gimp their engine for XSX or PC (easily 80% of their market) for less than 5% of their company value?

Think.
They're not gimping anything.
XSX will run less details at higher res/performance.

Hasn't this been discussed already?

Sure it is.

You forgot to say UE5 will be gimped on PC too.

I’m going to keep my gob shut. But you know what I’m thinking. It’s the same as you. Why do I need to defrost things in the microwave before I can cook them.

But also...

I do hope this means UE5 isn’t feature gimped for Xbox support. Would be utterly stupid, due to pc also using DX, but still, anything is possible once money changes hands.

250mil sounds a tad low though to me, how much are epic worth? Surely they make more bank than that on a weekend playing crazy golf?

Why in the hell would a game engine be gimped on Xbox? You're a dev & saying something this silly?

Honestly, if I were a rabid Sony fanboy like so many on here, this moneyhat would scare me.

  1. It means potentially more of my precious exclusives are not just going to PC, but to EGS. Horizon is very foreshadowing; sure it is also coming to Steam but the way both Epic AND Sony handle timed exclusivity, I can easily see future titles having timed exclusivity on the EGS. Bloodborne is already rumored to be coming to EGS. Now that Sony has a (albiet extremely small, less than 1.4%) share in Epic, Playtation exclusives on EGS benefit both parties. Prefer Steam? Lol, too bad.
  2. This announced right now really discredits everything Tim Sweeny and Epic has said about PS5. Even though the nonstop gushing over the console started to come off as very PR-like, and the fact that Tim himself said they had a partnership with Sony a few months ago, people still stuck their finger in their ears and ignored the obvious to placate their tribalism. I mean, even the way Tim would weirdly dodge questions about Xbox it was obvious he wasn't allowed to talk about it in a positive light except for the regular "UE5 will be great on Xbox." Also, Tim has been giving false statements about Playstation ever since the PS3 days, even going as far as saying how better than PC those systems were (lol). Anyone have that pic of what Tim has been saying every generation? Saw it in some thread here.
Anyway, watch how the usual suspects react to this post. Will be very telling.

PC is different. I assume it's possible to add more RAM to use more traditional methods to match PS5.

Unless I'm mistaken, in which case anybody is free to correct me on stuff that has been discussed when the tech demo hit the internet.

Edit:

Or upgrade hardware.

I doubt it too, but hey you never know. Once money changes hands, it doesn’t take much effort to prioritise one feature set for one platform over another. That happens today even. I don’t think it will, that leaves too much on the table. But anything is possible in the world of money.

I could tell, but it probably won't load in full detail on your end.

Please, explain it to me like I haven’t worked on a released game before. I’m curious.

That cut seems a bit too small to get anything susbstantial from.

Maybe ad rights to multiplat games, or timed exclusivity.

With switch emulation getting better by the day Sony partnering with epic, Xbox acquiring studios seems like PC is going to be covered on all angles in terms of gaming.
