This one has a great balance between old and new.

You can't see it, you have to feel it......XBOX only had haptic triggers which were hardly used by devs, this is totally different, it's full function...

Don't like it. Looks too clean. Actually sterile is probably the more appropriate description.
The most neutral poster on GAF...…..
Making the buttons match the sticks makes the color scheme feel more cohesive. The stick should be white or the buttons black. Either option fixes the disconnect i think. From a design direction, even though I like the overall approach they've taken. There's a few minor issues that can make a major impact on the overall look.
First is the dark elements: The trigger plastic is black, the mid section plastic is black but with an odd blue tint that makes it look cheap and then you have the same old grey rubber on the sticks. In addition to this is the tacky, dark-metallic PS button that is obscured with poor lighting (and definitely doesn't photograph/render well for press shots). Nothing is coherent and yet at the same time, nothing stands out either.
For the light elements: While a minimalist approach can work, that touchpad has absolutely nothing happening on it, it's empty space and a tiny bit of texture (even if it's visual and not tactile) goes a long way to bringing it all together.
Here's the ORIGINAL:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's the slightly TWEAKED VERSION. By tone-matching the plastics and slightly darkening the sticks it becomes more coherent. See how adding a lighter PS Button breaks the mid section up and just a touch of faint texture on the touchpad brings it all together:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And some HIGHER CONTRAST VERSIONS, if that's what you prefer:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The higher contrast options are a matter of personal taste, but I'd argue that with the slightly tweaked version; the clearer branding (PS Logo), tone-matching like materials and breaking up empty space should be design 101 for companies of this size. Tiny tweaks that take away nothing from the core design but make a massive difference in brand identity and public reception.
Of course, I'm coming at this from a designer/marketing perspective, I know most of us barely look at our controllers. But never underestimate iconic designs and the subsequent nostalgia it breeds in the long run.
Well, we can just wait till comparisons are made....I think even on multiplats there will be a difference...….Lol, but as you just said yourself "you have to feel it".
and while I dont doubt the ds's rumble will be better the the xsx's, its not something that really bothers me.
It wont be to much different for multiplats.
I do have to say though that I find it fascinating (not in a bad way) at how at the very beginning of the PS3, Sony got rid of their rumble for controllers (until they completely shifted that stance) to now w/ the PS5 they're going all in at launch.
Mockup
I have a white DS4 and it looks good.
Do you wash your hands?
Yea, I did a mea culpa above when it was explained to me. I just remembered the PR at the time when I made that post. That was done because of licensing issue. Their PR around it was silly though.
Mockup
if it was white it would be exactly as the one when you power up the console. Missed oportunity really.I don’t understand why they made the logo such a colour. Just a bit more contrast (lighter gray) and the controller will be a lot less generic looking.
Like most things of this nature some devs will dabble in it in the beginning but over the course of time more likely than not it will go completely unused bar specific instances or in first party games.
If they would switch the left analog stick with the D-Pad than it would be a great controller which I would buy, even if it's called after a Sex Toy from my Grandma
I just tried plugging in my wired 360 controller 5 times out of curiosity, but nope, no slowdowns that forced me to reboot. No crazy mouse malfunctions. And that Steam base their stats on hardware that was used years and years ago sounds a bit silly to me. If true, I wonder how far back they go? Will my old 4830, 560ti and 660ti count if I answer the survey today? That was a mid 2018 survey, we are in 2020 and DS4 still had more registrations on steam over XBOX ONE controllers, even then...…….That 360 figure are simply people who registered a controller on steam years ago......Not many still use these......I had one using on steam myself for the longest while, I still have it, but don't use it for years now, besides, there's is an issue when you plug in a wired 360 controller it begins to lag your desktop and send your mouse haywire, where most times you have to reboot...….
OK, I'm pretty happy with that now
Possibly the best Sony product design barring the original Walkman, imhoLook at that sexy beast.
but the DS4 also has an integrated battery, what are you talking about? With an integrated battery these things better not be more expensive than the DS4 cause I know I'm gonna end up having to buy like 4 of them throughout the generation again.
Doesn't happen right away, but if you keep it plugged in it shows up...…...Thing is I had my 360 controller hooked up at the back of my machine for the longest while and it kept happening, mouse pointer would just go bonkers, sometimes on exit of a game.....I've since unplugged that controller, never looked back...I just tried plugging in my wired 360 controller 5 times out of curiosity, but nope, no slowdowns that forced me to reboot. Maybe 3rd party controllers play a part? For example, both my 8bitdo controllers show up as 360 when in xinput mode.
Hmmm has PS VR been confirmed as backwards compatible?I'm assuming it must have some other means of tracking and it'll be translated for legacy VR titles.
