"Almost all" top 100 PS4 games will be playable at launch on the PS5, with more titles playable over time

are in a big trouble
so it's not like the Xbox when the developers had to make it backwards compatible themselves I do remember something like this that's why we getting articles like red dead now backwards compatible

i mean, duh. this is how it works with literally every single BC system ever. it isn't going to play 100% of all games right out of the box. having that expectation is pretty silly, given how BC has worked in every other real world instance. sometimes, the older games work right away. sometimes they don't, the faster framerate breaks physics, etc. so the games need to be patched. they do this on xbox.

i dunno, some people freaking out right now are on this "all or nothing" trip. they won't be happy until it plays every single game released in the past 25 years. that's a pretty silly expectation.

Original PS2 did 99% BC of PS1, PS3 did 100% BC on PS2. XSX has 100% BC of Xbox One. Also Wii is 100% BC of Gamecube, Wii U also

XSX executes native Xbox one code according to Digital Foundry

That's uninformed bullshit as always from DF.
XSeX uses same APIs, and MSFT prohibited use of low level access in current-gen.
That's why it can claim full BC (in reality it will also be not 100% full, but probably better than Sony)

Kamina

Golden Boy
If there was a Gurren Lagaan PS4 game it would definitely not play day one. You ok with that?....huh!?

jk
But I know most of my library won't work and I'm bummed
😂
I have my PS4Pro for that

Look I get that people are pissed that not all games will be playable.
Most of mine are the PS4’s console cellers though, and as long as those run I am fine.

Theory: Games will be patched in a hurry
Practice: Enjoy TLOU2 PS5 remaster for $69.99 etc.
The whole "Sony cutting costs during the PS3 era made them realize there's profit in remasters" unleashed the kraken.

Wait, isn't this how every emulator ever has worked? Wouldn't Sony need to include the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 system chips in each PS5 for near 100% compatibility?

How does that make any sense at all? Jesus. People loosing their minds today.

You would have to either destroy the capabilities of the PS5 to make the console affordable or charge $700 to squeeze in the SOCs of 4 systems. I fully expect that Sony will be testing BC rapidly and rolling titles out at a pace that is at least in line with what Microsoft did with the Xbox One.

I am still hoping that Sony include the PS1, PS2, and PS3 emulators that the have kept hidden in previous systems.

DF specifically said it was built into XSX chip, they heard it from XSX team during their visit to MS.

It is not true. GPU architecture in current-get and next gen is different.
Sony have 36 CUs only because of hardware-level backwards compat.
MSFT BC is software only. There is no other way.

Legit shocked. This is where you have to capitalize on the PS4 lead and players carrying over their digital libraries and they fucked it up?

Amazing.

PS1 PS2 and PS3 should have been a no brainer as well, disc based would have been incredible. Not fully PS4 compatible is frankly unbelievable.

There is a difference between hardware BC and software BC. Remember the original PS3 had hardware BC of PS2. It looks like XSX is a hardware based BC of Xbox one, according to what DF heard during their visit to MS. PS5 is a software based BC of PS4. This could make big difference on compatibility and enhancement.

I was hoping I could replace my ageing PS3 for full BC but I guess that's not happening, very disappointing. Guess we're gonna be stuck with emulating only down the line.

Terrible

It ensures that the ps5 will be the exclusives box and the seriesX for multiplats and first party

I wasn't expecting hardware-based backwards compatibility, but my hope was more a statement along the lines of almost all PS4 games at launch being compatible, with edge cases getting addressed over time. For me, full BC is a much desired feature, but I'm willing to see how things evolve, over the next few months.

That's cool that XSX is including hardware based emulation. I definitely enjoyed playing the late PS2 games on my PS3 at launch.

You arent paying attention. Xbxsx has hardware bc that is 100% compatible with Xbox one. The only time its now 100% is when the architecture is totally different like on the 360

The Series X is compaitble with lots of older gen games I liked.

The PS5 plays none........

You guys can keep trying to spin this all you want. It's a huge blow.

The melancholic part is that Sony has some history with backwards compatibility. I mean, the PS2 playing PS1 games was such an awesome feature. They have such a great library on every console, seeing them not give a shit about it this hard flat out makes me sad.

godhandiscen

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
Probably 10% of my gaming time is spent on BC. This will really shorten the library at least during the first year.

What? It's the other way around. That's why PS5 is limited, because it has the hardware support and is limited by having to run in compatibility mode. While XSX can use the full XSX GPU to emulate and run Xbox One games built for up to 6 TF.

Imagine if Sony hadn't invested in amazing developers and games – I would jump ship in a heartbeat. One thing's for damn sure now, Sony better have an amazing lineup of games to showcase what the system is capable of, if not then they need a big enough price difference.

Good question. I got bit worried about that. So far PS5 news was terrible in any aspect. No pictures of the PS5 will look like, no Dualshock 5 or even PS5 tech games.

Anw, back to the BC, was my main reason to get a PS5. I guess I'll wait for more info.

This is very disappointing. I never expected PS1-PS3 rumor to be true, but not having full PS4 bc is very bad. Guess I'll be keeping my console plugged in.

Worse thing about this, is they likely going to run like on PS4, no nothing extra like on X or S with Vsync...

Nah they run at accelerated speeds, it was talked about in the stream. That's why it's not full BC from day one because they want to test all the games and make sure there are no oddities when running at faster speeds.

Still doesn't excuse why there will only be 100ish titles considering how long they've had to work on this.

Well sorry if I did not hear it, because there was a lot of words about pretty standard features in the industry, which does not even needed to be said. This is terrible way to reveal spec for the console. Shit like "you don't even need to know where data is located on the disc" No fucking shit.

Trust me, I want as much BC on the PS5 as possible, not having it though won't make me switch to Xbox cause I won't be able to play my old library there either. I hope they can at least make all their exclusives playable, for the rest I'll let my PC be the savior.
