that was normal before the PS4 and Xbox One gen...
the PS3 was first talked about 2 E3s before it launched! it was literally at 2 E3s before it was released and even before the first E3 appearance it already was talked about.

the Wii was also at 2 E3s before it was released... this is not special it was the last generation that was the weird one here, that one was the anomaly not the norm

i mean that was my entire point. it didnt make sense to talk about a console when you have nothing to talk about. they didnt even talk about ssd, rt, or cpu in 2018. so why talk about it at all if not to do exactly what Agnostic speculated they were doing... to have something of their own in anticipation of sony unveiling a console in 2018.

well before that we had console reveals that were at least 1 year ahead of launch with full reveals of hardware and gameplay.
what we now have are maybe project name reveals and some PR babble, back then the reveals that were usually more than a year ahead of release included all the infos and game demos, sometimes playable for the press even.

what do we know about the PS5 less than a year from launch? that it will have an SSD and support Raytracing... that's it. we don't even have actual confirmed PS5 gameplay of any game yet, we have zero confirmed launch titles... in fact we have zero announced Sony games for PS5
on Series X side we hava a tiny bit more with 2 announced first party games, a design render and a photo of the SoC.

no hands on time for the press, no actual gameplay, no solid hardware infos. that is not something that usually happenes

Well that's because the internet's changed a lot since 2013, let alone 2004. We never saw companies use platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Discord etc. before to marketing and messaging until just a few years ago, when higher-ups finally started to understand how to leverage them.

We've never really seen companies use open-source, 3rd-party messaging and communication tools until a few years ago, either. Doesn't mean there was a conspiracy involved. And IIRC, AMD are the ones handling the repository databases, same with the product benchmarks, wouldn't your theory implicate AMD being somewhat at fault?

Again, I guess it's possible. Anything's technically possible. But it's extremely improbable.

its funny how some people are reading a conspiracy theory in my posts when i have not alleged MS hacking anything just because they owned github. the directory was public and several posts on both forums downloaded it themselves.

AMD is SOLELY at fault. im sure both Sony and MS ripped Lisa Su a new one after the github leaks. An era user had their own google drive doc DMCA'd by AMD because he was hosting the github leak. Thats how seriously AMD took it. Im sure heads rolled over at AMD after that fiasco.

However, i am not speculating who is to blame. just what happened. komachi and rogame are far from the only guys searching github for next gen stuff. there was a reddit leak in january that listed a 4 tflops lockhart, a 12 tflops anaconda and an 8 tflops ps5. this was before any gonzalo leak which was unearthed days later by either komachi or apisak. so where did this leak get the 8 tflops from? ariel was 1.8 ghz at the time and 36 cus get you 8 tflops.

i could never figure out why that 8 tflops number kept popping up. iirc the first gonzalo leak had a clockspeed of 1 ghz. everyone said it was 64 cus at 1 ghz or 8 tflops. fine. then we went up to 1.8 ghz in april. and then all of a sudden it was downgraded to 36 cus. i was like why are we downgrading the CUs? again, the 8 tflops number felt like this arbitrary number we had to stick to. it wasnt until late july when komachi found the oberon results did we start to entertain 9 tflops. before that it was always 8. The only one peddling the 8 tflops theories at the time was penello.

and thats it. thats literally the crux of the discussion. im not blaming evil MS for stealing Sony's data. im just trying to figure out if these leaks are related, if MS got wind of it through github and if they devised their strategy around it.

this is factually incorrect. hmqq and klobrie were treated with respect and their word was taken just as seriously as Matt's and Klee's. both of them led the MS is more powerful charge on era immediately after the first wired article went live. i do not remember them facing any kind of pushback, let alone harassment from the sony fans. we all just assumed that to be the case since they were verified and we simply took their word for it.

it wasnt until E3 when Reiner and Colin came out and said they heard different from devs that everyone began to wonder just what the hell these MS insiders were talking about. And again, despite them being proven wrong by reputable journalists, they were not harassed or mocked. they just simply packed their bags and went into hiding. they only pop up whenever windowscentral leaks something to gloat and then go back into hiding. Matt and Klee were part of that thread and continued to post for months through it all until they were driven out after the github leaks.

THAT is the reason why people trusted them and still do. they were part of the community and discussed everything on a daily basis. not just who comes out on top. they didnt just show up to do PR for MS every few months.

Penello still posts there and is treated like a rockstar. the same guy who was mocked and laughed off of gaf at the start of last gen. hes also led the charge for the $399 8 tflops ps5 and no one even dares to disagree with him.

SlimySnake I was making a joke of the way it came across as MS's evil plan that Sony thwarted.

It's relatively normal in the console market for the company that's a year behind to jump in and talk up their future console when a competitor is announcing the early console (DC/PS2). There was a lot of talk at the time of Xbox getting dropped or spun out, so I'm sure some of the thinking was to demonstrate there was continued investment in the future.

There's nothing that I'm aware of that says butterfly design is necessary for ps5 to do ps4 bc. I'll let you show me otherwise.
At the time of pro, "butterfly" design didn't exist either. Hell, each side of the "butterfly" isn't even the same. They could've just done a single sided chip with the front end on one side rather that it being sandwiched between both halves.

It's interesting that your post reads almost exactly as what was recently posted on era.

The biggest issue I have with this and things like this way of thinking is that it always assumes side A changed their plan, and went all in, while side B, Knowing this, did nothing at all to counter this. If it’s plausible that sony were to release early and then said no, to change their plans... it’s just as plausible MS caught wind and changed course as well to counter.

And that’s the game, really. It’s all about one side making a move and the other side countering. Sooner or later you run out of time or options, and it’s no longer realistic to counter.

So to assume Sony some how two whole years ago changed their plans and Ms have been sat with their pants down for all that time... doesn’t sit well with me. Two years is a LONG time, and neither side will have stayed the course of their plans 100% from then.

500 dollars is fine if the specs are in line the the series x give or take a teraflop. But 9 vs. 12 for the same price? Thats asking alot. If sony shot for a 399 price point and the specs reflect that but in the end still cost them 500 then that is a big time screw up on their part. Its not at PS3 599 hard to program for, losing all your exclusive third parties or xbox one reveal levels of screw up, but its not the PR they want or need at the beginning of a new console cycle. WOW!! This really is the best leak of this generation! It really renders those Xbox "insiders" as fake, I remember the day the PlayStation 5's 1st WIRED article landed discussing the technology that will power the console, Klobrille IMMEDIATELY jumped into ResetEra & Twitter to say that "Xbox Scarlett is CLEARLY more advanced & more powerful than PS5" and pretended that they had inside info because they had info about the GitHub 9.2 TF way before Ro-game or Komachi even data mined it, and when they heard Jason Schreier, Colin Moriarty, Matt, Kleegamefan, Andrew Reiner (Game Informer Editor), even OsirisBlack, they all went into hiding and were lashing out at every inside info that were against the "Inside info" that they had which was the GitHub leak all along, which lacks context, Kleegamefan and Matt both denied it as well, everything went against it even, Jason's comment about both consoles being more powerful than RTX 2080 dismisses GitHub leak immediately.

I just think some people are desperate for a gotcha moment from either side. Truth is, even if there is a 20% power difference either way, that's the smallest differential in recent console history. Even price wouldn't be enough, because everybody and their brother already expects Sony at $399/MS at $499 anyway. There simply won't be any master gotcha moments this time around. IMO

Short of Sony going 15TF or something like that.

Even though their fake neutrality was pretty obvious to most, the fact that this poster put them on blast like that was the highlight of this thread. Even to this day those two are not-so-subtly trying prop up Lockhart beyond what is reputably rumored (6tf) in order to punch it's weight against a supposed 9th PS5.

Biases is cool and all (unlike most I found TimDog harmless) but trying to desperately contain it in within arm chair technical jargon mixed with 'poems' is just bizarre.

My goodness. Someone really thinks that some issue that causes ONE company to have to up it's price by $100 would not affect the other? Sheesh. Yep....there's just magical strategy out there that's in play. MS (or Sony) has found a way to not be affected by issues that affect EVERY OTHER manufacturer, just for their video game consoles! LOL. This stuff is too funny. No....sorry. The TRUTH of it is that IF both companies were targeting different parts of the market- let's say Sony IS releasing a 9TF box that was going after the low to mid range market and MS was in fact releasing a 12TF top of the market box for more money. Then these shortages will cause BOTH pain. So instead of $399 Sony would have to sell at $499. And instead of $499, MS has to go to $599. Now, if that's true..what do you think that does to the sales of each?

I still don't believe MS is targeting a different price point than Sony. Not intentionally at any rate. They want to GROW marketshare and are in an inferior market position. It would not be in their interest to make their marketshare SMALLER by introducing a much more expensive piece of hardware that only hard core gamers and forum rats (like me! ) will buy. Sony would even FURTHER dominate the market for that generation and that Xbox might well be the last Xbox Microsoft put to the market. No, they need to sell lots of boxes in addition to the software. See, by selling software to multiple platforms, MS actually DILUTES their profits somewhat. Sony has had a larger share of that software market pie AND not split their software among other platforms that have lower margins. So no...I'm not buying the theory of MS putting out some super high end console, especially with ZERO evidence of the 'sandwich theory' super low end box to shore up their sales. Now maybe MS does put out a low cost box in a year or so to try and capture more of the market that way, but if they're not doing it from the start, they're not going to put their main product out with such a huge disadvantage in the market place. And yes, that high price WOULD be a disadvantage, no matter how powerful the hardware is. Your average consumer and average parents DON'T CARE. They care about the cost.

I think we should all be grateful that *most* of the information points to both systems being ~12TF or slightly above.

That's an insane level of power for a console and almost unimaginable considering the new CPUs, sufficient RAM *and* SSDs for both consoles.

Not to mention with RDNA efficiency, both systems are going to punch well above their capabilities.

We have seen what Naughty Dog, Capcom, Guerillla and Square-Enix can eek out of the old systems.

This is gonna be ridiculous, especially as the console life progresses.

The TRUTH of it is that IF both companies were targeting different parts of the market- let's say Sony IS releasing a 9TF box that was going after the low to mid range market and MS was in fact releasing a 12TF top of the market box for more money. Then these shortages will cause BOTH pain. So instead of $399 Sony would have to sell at $499. And instead of $499, MS has to go to $599. Now, if that's true..what do you think that does to the sales of each?

I still don't believe MS is targeting a different price point than Sony. Not intentionally at any rate. They want to GROW marketshare and are in an inferior market position. It would not be in their interest to make their marketshare SMALLER by introducing a much more expensive piece of hardware that only hard core gamers and forum rats (like me! ) will buy. Sony would even FURTHER dominate the market for that generation and that Xbox might well be the last Xbox Microsoft put to the market. No, they need to sell lots of boxes in addition to the software. See, by selling software to multiple platforms, MS actually DILUTES their profits somewhat. Sony has had a larger share of that software market pie AND not split their software among other platforms that have lower margins. So no...I'm not buying the theory of MS putting out some super high end console, especially with ZERO evidence of the 'sandwich theory' super low end box to shore up their sales. Now maybe MS does put out a low cost box in a year or so to try and capture more of the market that way, but if they're not doing it from the start, they're not going to put their main product out with such a huge disadvantage in the market place. And yes, that high price WOULD be a disadvantage, no matter how powerful the hardware is. Your average consumer and average parents DON'T CARE. They care about the cost.

If one was intending to launch a 399 SKU sold at cost and the other a 499 SKU at profit, then yes, the 399 SKU would obviously be much more affected by a rise in part cost. Because what are the differences between them? Pretty much just the die size, which is a $20 to $30 difference at most. So Sony is targeting 399 with 8 TF (I think they were only going up to 2 GHz because that version of Oberon didn't include raytracing cores, so they had to run them with GPU Compute, the final console will run 8 TF + raytracing), BOM goes up $50, they can't hold that price point. Microsoft is targeting 499 with 12 TF, BOM goes up $50, they just don't make a profit anymore on the device, price point stays the same.

I've got a good friend that's a lifelong gamer like me... though he has grown tired of current gen and says most games now are shit. He swears up and down he wont be buying next gen systems at all because developers have grown lazy and he doesnt believe games next gen will look or play any better than current gen games. He thinks 4k is a complete lie looks the same as 1080p and that the human eye cant even see more than 60fps so it's a waste to go any higher. I hope he is proven wrong on all fronts next gen, I'm ready for the leap.

WOW!! This really is the best leak of this generation! It really renders those Xbox "insiders" as fake, I remember the day the PlayStation 5's 1st WIRED article landed discussing the technology that will power the console, Klobrille IMMEDIATELY jumped into ResetEra & Twitter to say that "Xbox Scarlett is CLEARLY more advanced & more powerful than PS5" and pretended that they had inside info because they had info about the GitHub 9.2 TF way before Ro-game or Komachi even data mined it, and when they heard Jason Schreier, Colin Moriarty, Matt, Kleegamefan, Andrew Reiner (Game Informer Editor), even OsirisBlack, they all went into hiding and were lashing out at every inside info that were against the "Inside info" that they had which was the GitHub leak all along, which lacks context, Kleegamefan and Matt both denied it as well, everything went against it even, Jason's comment about both consoles being more powerful than RTX 2080 dismisses GitHub leak immediately.

What a load of BS they said LOL!! The fact that those Xbox fanboys like Colbert, ProElite, TimDog, Spechal Ed etc etc even jumped here immediately after the guy who exposed them here is really telling.

Well, your friend is not wrong. Depending on your distance to the screen and its size, 1080p does look the same as 4K. You have to reach a certain size and be close enough to see the difference. As for the eye: The human eye cannot make out individual frames at anything above 24 fps. It's always a smooth motion after that. And it sure can't make out individual frames at 60 fps and above. So he is technically correct. But the eye can still recognize differences in frames at 120 fps and above. Because it's just a trigger. At 60 fps an enemy appears after 16 ms, at 120 fps an enemy appears after 8 ms. Doesn't matter that the eye doesn't see the difference between 60 fps and 120 fps, it still sees the change much earlier at 120 fps than at 60 fps.
