Sony Positions Next PlayStation for Hard-Core Gamers.

This feels like a simple marketing trick on positioning. We gamers like to call ourselves "hard core". You feel elite this way.

I am 33 years old. I own 800+ original titles on various platforms. I have finished around 500 games. But I play primarily retro and indie stuff, so I am most definitely not Sony's target audience. These are just buzzwords.

Agree with this. Hardcore to me is having an interest in a huge range of games, both new and old.

No, because I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding as to how these SSD systems are going to work.

They won't be system storage, they will have an auxiliary drive for general storage that will dump segments to the SSD with intelligent delivery revolving around the particular section of the game you're in, it will swap sections on the fly in the background and pre-cache it so there will be no loading between data swaps. This will allow them to keep the SSD size down to maybe 128GB which will dramatically cut its cost but still be able to provide every loading benefit in any particular game.

I'm assuming a more general purpose HDD will be used for main storage with compression and algorithmic wizardry to be able to dump files rapidly to the SSD for operation.
It's a possibility but considering how cheap ssd storage is, and will be I sort of doubt they'll use a hybrid approach.

It's not a possibility, it's an assurance. M.2 storage is not cheap by any means and with the transfer rates they're talking it's going to be some the fastest available storage on the market so its size will be extremely limited.

The only way it can financially work is as a variation of how myself and the other poster described. Also these SSD's will be onboard storage, they will not be removable or replaceable hardware. Sony has already talked about proprietary technology in regards to their drive so it will be a fixed device, it has to be, it's the only way the system can work.

I think you and I have a different definition of hardcore.

A hardcore gamer, to me, buys and plays a lot of games over thier lifetime.

A casual gamer to me buys a console and buys GTAV or NBA or FIFA and continues to buy the upgrades, but it is the only game they play.

I don’t know what Sonys definition of hardcore is.
It doesn't mean anything from them really. Anyone who spends money on their shit is hardcore to them.

Agreed. I strongly assume that their definition of "hard core" are actually people who mainly play Call of Duty, FIFA and the like. Which, from this forum's perspective, is what could be considered the "casual"/non-niche audience.

I find it odd that "Hardcore" is typically used to describe AAA games that have heavy narrative, lots of cutscenes, and linear gameplay.

Technically "Hardcore" gamers are people to tend to gravitate towards indie titles that require lots of skill to be good at.

Yeah, it seems like what we used to call "hardcore" and what is now considered hardcore are two very different things.

My best example would be the Xbox One X, which is a machine designed for the hardcore enthusiast according to Microsoft itself. It sold to the hardcore and then it fell hard. Hell, it’s $400-$430 now and it’s still not selling.

This is not true at all. At all. Most firms peddling marketing analysis of the industry (NPD, etc.) have stated that the X has been performing really well - apparently XB sales doubled since 2017.

That's a really strong indicator that there's been a shift in expectations and that a $500 PS5 would not be a deal-breaker.

She is definitely an attractive woman, just not displaying it clearly, I'd say some titstreamers will cosplay her with only the portions of the metal armor hiding the sensitive parts 🧐.

Yet, they will complain about being "objectified"... I can objectify this character with her whole armor on if I want to, and I don't care for sex workers pretending to cosplay.

The point wasn’t about how attractive a woman is, that was just someone deflecting.

The point is Xbox is not above pandering to the SJW club by converting its biggest bro franchise into a girlstooone.

i dont see why this is news. both MS and Sony are “positioning” themselves for “hardcore” gamers and it doesnt prove which console is strong as some are suggesting. we already knew Sony and MS were not making a Fortnite box

For me Sony is losing me as a costumer with the change of focus from Japanese games both first party and third party. Their first party output was really pathetic this gen. ZERO first party jrpgs and 0 intresting games for Sony Japan Studios (except for a couple VR games). Then they are losing Japanese support to the Switch thanks to their internal cencorship that affects mostlly them than the westerner studios. Right now Sony thinks that the hardcore gamers only care for AAA cinematic 3rd Person Shooter/Action/Adventure and PSVR games. And while I like those games too it has becoming very samey outpout. The spark is lost. Sony use to have games in all genres like racing but they shelved ips like Motorstorm or Wipeout(only a port).
So it's a wait and see game for me....

Well th numbers I’ve seen show Xbox sales are down like 40 percent year over year so....

Bloodborne, TLG, and Gravity Rush 2 Were amongst the titles Japan Studios produced... Astrobot, albeit VR, is a quite powerful statement on how good platformers can be in VR too, but fair they had some problems transitioning from PS3 to PS4...

I'm pretty sure it will be just like PS4.Focus on hardcore on the first 2 years with games like Bloodborne to help spread positive word of mouth from hardcore gamers and then forgeting about them and focusing on cinematic games, VR gimmicks, and (this time) introducing new subscription models and games as services.
And all that while keeping censoring small niche Japanese games because you know it's #fortheplayers.

Woah there, I was with ye up until you said VR gimmicks. VR is definitely not a gimmick my friend.

What's Sony's definition of "hardcore gamer"? The article points out that they plan to focus primarily on "relationships" with big publishers and on making few but high budget 1st party games. Not sure how that translates to "hardcore gamers".

Also, there's that arrogant bit about smaller publishers 'would still want to release on our platform even if we don't show them much support, because we're too big'.

There was no panties or moe in them so they aren't truly from glorious nippon

I lost count after 11. Hell I have the game and I forget what number it is. It is that memorable.

lol

That shit doesn't even deserve to be talked about.
Pity game is actually good. Unlike most japanese rpgs. Every time i hear someone say they play them for the story i laugh.

And snk heroines is stupid fun. I own a physical copy.

I keep hearing about sony censoring games but I don't know what games have been censored or heard of any big AAA games being censored. Can someone do a list of games that sony has censored so I can get a better grasp of the situation.

Okay, cool. Good luck trying to find anything like that anywhere else. Ha

I will probably end up getting the PS5. That said none of the first party tittles from Sony really interest me. The latest "first party title" game i bough for the PlayStation 4 was Detroit: Become Human and that game is no longer a Sony exclusive. I'm looking forward Nioh 2, FF VII Remake and Granblue Fantasy: Relink, all of which are gonna end up being timed exclusive.

Man, it blows my mind that some people's lives have this massive reserved time slot dedicated to campaigning against Sony on GAF in any and all threads about Sony. I mean seriously, the dedication would be admirable if it wasn't so pathetic.
On the other hand when PlayStation utterly destroys the competition, it will be so funny to watch the reactions..... their utter despair and excuses.

Well said. I'm in the same boat really. They're going to have to really show me why I need the new system with compelling games and features, but I'm not feeling the love right now. And unfortunately for my girl and I VR is out of the question as I get uneasy after a while and she can't use VR at all as she get's sick. I'd much rather have seen the money and effort put into PS4 exclusives that she and I want and can play. Its like a repeat of Kinect last gen. I'm burnt out on most Sony first party titles and I miss the variety. I'm okay waiting this time, as PC and Switch have me covered. I'm actually leaning towards the nextbox though for a next-gen launch system. I miss the previous Sony leadership as well.

Surely, if you have a PC there is no need to buy an Xbox (next?)
Particularly since it's highly likely PS5 will be more powerful....

That was never exclusive to Sony,

Bloodborne is amazing, so is Gravity Rush 2. But GR2 was sent without promotion to end the franchise with an early server closure too. TLG was ok but already played several times with the ps3 remaster. If you compare the outpout vs past generations you can see how weak it is. There are ZERO first party JRPGS. Let that sink in.
Also rembemer 2-3 years ago some PS leakers saying that Sony had in the pipeline 3-4 JRPGS and one of them were to rivel the Final Fantasy franchise. Maybe false leaks???? However you can totaly see Sony change during PS4.

On the other hand when PlayStation utterly destroys the competition, it will be so funny to watch the reactions..... their utter despair and excuses.

As I said at my first post I am seeing Switch getting lots of Japanese support and jrpgs. Many of them were at Vita and 3DS and the Switch is the natural evolution of that. If Sony continues the samy way with censorship we will see how this goes in the next few years.

I will totally wait and see PS5 reveal and support.

Fair... but I was not talking about SotC, but the PS4 only The Last Guardian. GR2 should have gotten more marketing, but the production values and the whole game in and of itself were great.

There will come a time, maybe 5 or 10 years from now that you'll also realize that it is. Maybe a very impressive one (for some people like you) but still a gimmick nonetheless.

For the first 24 months of its lifecycle, this is the winning strategy Sony needs to make. The core gamers are the ones who buy games and subscriptions. No the guy who buys a Playstation to play Fifa and GTA exclusively.

The definition of gimmick does not match what VR is so you are factually wrong. In fact, it is the way to play since it has better controls and better immersion. Playing through a window (a TV) is a gimmick, in comparison. It's like comparing playing on mobile to playing traditional games. Galaxies apart.

As for Sony's statement, I don't see the difficulty to understand what they mean, and these are good news. Hardcore games are SP AAA games, the way they have been doing all this gen and they are doubling down on that. No services, no GaaS and no bullshit. Games like TLOU. Dark Souls, Cyberpunk, Zelda, Halo,... those are hardcore games.

Impossible to extract something negative out of this.

"Hardcore" is one of those vague buzzwords marketing committies and out-of-touch journalists adopted to hype up the next AAA game and gatekeep other players into closed echochambers.

I don't like to game on my pc much, save for more exclusive content. Also my missus loathes trying to use a computer, she's a console and handheld gamer. So when she gets the urge to play a newer release its got to be either PS4 or Xbox for her. I also enjoy it, and absolute power is not our main interest. Few games actually utilize the hardware to the full extent anyway. I can accept a decent console version. And frankly I like that my accessories will be compatible with the next Xbox. I also like the diversity in MS's portfolio going forward. I might eventually get a PS5 but most likely how I got the PS3, later on discount with a better library. We've been buying most of our Jrpgs and such on Switch lately anyway to avoid the censorship. We just don't trust Sony right now. I also doubt that my gal and I are the hardcore audience that Sony is focusing on sadly.
