Sony Positions Next PlayStation for Hard-Core Gamers.

According to a new report, PlayStation is doubling down on hardcore gamers with the PS5, just like it did this generation with the PS4. The report comes way of Wall Street Journal who claims Sony will focus on its more PlayStation hardcore base with the PS5. And this is quite different than what Xbox and Google's marketing plan has been so far, which has been to expand gaming to bigger audiences. The PlayStation 5 is targeting players that obsess over the latest features and less mainstream titles. So, if you fall into this camp, it sounds like the PS5 will be for you. But the question is: is this a good marketing strategy? Well, it worked for the PS4.

As you may know, Sony has somewhat referred to the brand of PlayStation as a niche product in the past, so perhaps this news isn't that surprising. That said, while the PlayStation brand used to be a bit of an afterthought for Sony, it's now its flagship product, and a big reason why the company has rebounded recently with massive success. And so the bigger the brand gets for Sony, the more people started to assume it may widen its ambitions and chase the larger, more mainstream gaming market. But it doesn't appear like this is the case, not yet at least. That said, video games are making way more money for Sony than movies and television, electronics, and smartphones, so maybe Sony is thinking why change something that isn't broken?

As always, take this report with a grain of salt like any report, but this one comes from a reliable source and the information seems to align with what we've heard Sony say about the system, as well as other reports.

A great strategy from the market share leader :messenger_fire: I, for one, welcome this strategy as it will push away the filthy casuals that have plagued this medium for the past decade or so.
Mmmh... not many consoles bought in the short term in this way...if they are referring to the price...maybe Is more philosphycal like when greenberg has twitted that hardcore gamers choose xbox

I read that Sony is pushing towards making stronger relationships with big publishers today, also from the Wall Street Journal.

OP, you only posted half the stories. This is the rest of the stories:
"Sony aims to market the Playstation 5 to “serious players”. To achieve this, the company intends to focus more on the big-name publishers and blockbuster titles such as Red Dead Redemption and Fallout, with less emphasis on smaller independent games. The reasoning provided was that “resources are limited” and that people mainly buy consoles to play more “graphic intensive” and “high quality games” "

Hey sony, how bout you stop censoring games first, before mentioning hardcore. Please kick those puritian SJWs out of your san fran offices.. in fact move your NA headquarters as far from the freaks and mini dictators on the coasts as possible, its the only way to be sure. Try montana or one of the dakotas

Or, how about just moving SIE back to Japan? It's clear at this point that shifting operations to California is a mistake.

I would skip consoles altogether if not for exclusives. Due to my low interest in Microsoft's future stuff and being more into PC I'm likely all in on Sony as soon as they bring out a game that I NEED.

DMC V on PS4 is great now no censorship

Move on to pornhub if you want to see some real tities to jack off so bad
Okay wow one game. Very nice.
What about the One Piece game that had it's DLC level blocked in america? One Piece is a children's show in Japan but it's a little too risque for america I guess. Just because you don't want to be treated like a child by a multi million dollar company doesn't mean you fap to anime cleavage.
Also somebody who spammed gifs of his ugly waifu Brie Larson all over the forum really has no room to judge anybody. Maybe if you nut once in a while you wouldn't act like some creepy weirdo.

Put your cock away and read a little.

[Update: It has been confirmed that "The Phantom Remedy" will not be made available on ANY formats in North America, not just PS4. This removes the possibility that Sony themselves chose to censor said quest, if it was indeed censored at all.]

You can’t sell 80 million consoles to hardcore players, After 20 mil the casuals are all that’s left.

I don’t know why you would want to alienate a large percent of your market while also ignoring a growing user base.

It’s a bold strategy and it might work, but I feel like I’ve heard this all before.

I’m a hardcore gamer that bought over 100 PS1 classics on PS3.

Also a huge Socom 1 &2 fan.

Also don’t like rebuying PS2 games just for trophies.

I also like fully featured Gran Turismos.

Can’t wait to see them continue to appeal to me.

You aren’t hardcore enough, you must continue to level your hardcore through purchasing, but not playing games to raise your hardcore level.

Most of the gaming audience is hardcore gamers. Very few casuals are going shell out $500 for a game console.

Look at what happened to Microsoft with the launch of the Xbox One. They switch the focus from games to TV and alienated the core audience. So what they've been doing since then is trying to win back the gamers with stuff like Gamepass.

I think you and I have a different definition of hardcore.

A hardcore gamer, to me, buys and plays a lot of games over thier lifetime.

A casual gamer to me buys a console and buys GTAV or NBA or FIFA and continues to buy the upgrades, but it is the only game they play.

I don’t know what Sonys definition of hardcore is.

So the middle east gets it on Sonys platform and NO platform gets it in NA, not on xbox one, not on PS4, yet somehow it's Sony doing that. If it's being blocked in NA maybe you have something else to blame.

The only game where there WAS differences is the one he mentioned DMCV and that game was uncensored later.

A game console is a big investment, and I doubt most casuals will shell out the cash to buy one and the games that you can play on it. Hardcore gamers will.

For me, a casual gamer will play a game on a device most readily available to them but wasn't intended for games. That being their mobile phone.

I disagree, but since the role of casual and hardcore aren’t laid out well here, I won’t argue it.

I'm pretty sure it will be just like PS4.Focus on hardcore on the first 2 years with games like Bloodborne to help spread positive word of mouth from hardcore gamers and then forgeting about them and focusing on cinematic games, VR gimmicks, and (this time) introducing new subscription models and games as services.
And all that while keeping censoring small niche Japanese games because you know it's #fortheplayers.

Is this a case that whenever something good about Xbox is said/there is a positive Xbox thread Sony fanbots come out to shit on it and troll it (seeing the first few posts in the thread)?
Oh wait... ;)...
Why are you talking about Xbox? You clearly have some underlying issues that you may need to work out because it seems pretty clear that a post such as that was highlighting a parallel for the last time Sony started talking like this.
