Bungie are upsetting the fan base with Destiny 2

Some of the smaller news to come out of E3 has really riled up up the existing destiny community and the choices behind the actions seem arbitrary.

Remember "The Darkness" the major enemy force well apparently that isn't going to be in destiny 2 at all, According to Luke Smith it was just a catch all term for the bad guys. One of the most Illusive and interesting parts of existing Destiny Lore is now(always was) just a term to quickly say bad guys in the destiny tool tips.

Jason Schreier: First thing I have to ask you about: I saw this Game Informer article. In it, you said that you guys will not be talking about The Darkness in the game.

Luke Smith: Yeah.

Schreier: And your explanation was, I believe, something about how it's not time to reveal that, or you're focusing on something else, correct?

Smith: Yep!

Schreier: Tell me the truth. Is it because none of you have any idea what ”The Darkness" actually means?

Smith: So, I think that at a point, just totally candidly? We had no idea what it was. Straight up. We had no clue.

Similarly in the same interview (linked below) Luke Smith says internally Bungie consider the story of the Exo Stranger wrapped up. You know that female Exo you encounter a few times who seems to be traveling in time and can warp in and out of areas. The one who infamously said "I don't even have time to explain why I don't have time to explain" She was perhaps one of the most narratively interesting characters of the first game and an actual mystery that didn't really have an explanation in the Grimoire. She's gone, Story is wrapped up by her giving you a mediocre gun. This is not how I consider a character arc ending

While we are on the subject of the Grimoire. It's Gone. Some of the most unique and interesting sci fi lore created in years and certainly some of the most unique and interesting in gaming is just being completely abandoned. Now I fully understand the Grimoire was not without issue. It was difficult for people to access and some of it was crucial to understanding events. However for those who did access it it was nearly universally enjoyed. Book of Sorrows being a highlight.

Understandably Bungie need to put more of it in game but to just ignore the existence of The Grimoire is a pretty big disservice to it's lore following community which is sizeable.

List of other things
No Beards for Character Creator (The single most requested thing since the E3 Destiny 1 Alpha)
No Private Matches at launch
No Free For All playlist at launch
No Ranked PVP at launch
No Dedicated server
No emote wheel (requested since emotes started getting sold)
PS4 Exclusive content (almost hated universally even by the PS4 crowd, lots of twitter backlash for this)

Jason Schreier Destiny 2 Interview

Lots of baffling decisions have been made. I'm still somewhat looking forward to it, but my hype has been mostly whittled away.

Why are ps4 destiny players complaining about exclusive content ? 🤣

Considering the rumors that D2 was originally more like a very big expansion that got rebooted a year ago, this stuff makes total sense.

Why are ps4 destiny players complaining about exclusive content ? 🤣

Because the Destiny Community is actually pretty amazing and they don't like the idea of players on other platforms missing out on content because of a marketing deal.

I put 1500+ hours into the first game. Not sure if I'll bother with the sequel. I have no faith in Bungie to right the ship finally. All signs currently point to D2 being a mess like the first game.

Because events and vendors are the same across platforms so gear can never be sold (has to be rng reward) and the associated maps and strikes cannot be the weekly featured events.

The most requested thing from the fanbase is the ability the have a bearded character? Really? The single, most requested addition to a game is fucking facial hair? xD

Nope.

Not sure where the OP got that from.

And why are you moaning about the lack of grimoire? The lore is going to be in the game now. Your point is mute.

I didn't like it myself either despite playing on PS4. It's scummy.

Wow, just straight up there

I'll be buying the game on PS4 but I'm definitely not happy about the exclusivity. The practice is bad for the industry.

Edit: It's pretty well known at this point that Destiny 1 was revamped pretty majorly relatively close to launch. I'm sure the story was cobbled together from whatever was left over. My guess is nobody who's working on the game currently ever gave two shits about the original story.

As has been said, this just comes off as a post about negative space--the things they aren't doing in Destiny 2.

They've made bold and fundamental changes to the formula, many of which we won't get to experience or even know about until the game releases on Sep 6.

Speaking as a fan, I'm fascinated and excited about the changes, especially to the weapon sandbox and PvP. Destiny 1 PvP, while entertaining, never gave me the highs that matched previous Bungie games.

I'm shocked with all the manpower they had in this with his underwhelming it seems.

Looks more like an expansion than a sequel

Destiny lore has always been a bunch of half baked nonsense. i honestly wouldn't care if they treated D2 like a straight up reboot of the story the first game set out to tell

I need an epic beard to stuff under my Titan helmet. My real life beard is over a foot long, so I want it in game hehe

Guess people who played the game know better about it than the developers themselves.

They should have read more Grimoire cards on their website.

None of these complaints have the least bit of impact on my enthusiasm for the game. However after 2,000+ hours over two systems and six toons, I'm not really sure I want to go back to Destiny. I sorta feel like I had my time with the game.

Hope it succeeds though. With or without beards.

Didnt they say how Destiny would represent a 10 year saga?

It is baffling that they did not have a clue how the story was going to unfold over that time, in terms of broad strokes.

As someone who only played Destiny at launch and hated the story aspects, even I am astounded by this. Bungie clearly don't know how to make a story out of this universe at this point.

As someone who played a ton of D1, so far most everything about D2 sounds so much better. Pretty confident the sequel will be a better game.

I mean none of that particularly bothers me if the rest of the game is great. As far as the lore stuff goes, the darkness and the exo stranger stuff I'd expect them to revisit eventually because people do like it. Just like the queen.

There was some interview or video shortly after destiny 1 launch that had a guy talk about adding beards and that they should look into these things, of course bungie forget and don't do what they say.

Absolutely nobody cares about what your character looks like underneath the armour at this point in the franchise's life.

False. We need good character creator options, and a toggle to switch off the head armor appearance while keeping the stats like every other loot game worth its salt.

On this, I remember Destiny was pitched as having a yearly cycle:

Destiny
Destiny Offshoot
Destiny
Destiny Offshoot
Destiny
Destiny Offshoot

Or something similar. Plan stretched out for years. I'm assuming that got binned off emphatically.

The bits about The Darkness crush my soul... they really had no desire to make more of that original storyline... so now Destiny's first 20 levels of story telling is left to be giberish forever.

What Luke said is the Darkness deserves good exposition and they're not ready to give it to us just yet. They'll flesh out a rich Cabal story (and he made it a point to specify that Cabal have absolutely nothing to do with the Darkness - the Hive are the closest race to the Darkness because they worship it but they aren't it).

And why are you moaning about the lack of grimoire? The lore is going to be in the game now. Your point is mute.

The depth of the Grimoire simply isn't possible to tell in the game. It's not a moot (not mute) point because things like Book or Sorrows cannot realistically be told in game and those things very heavily influence and add backstory to the the destiny universe.

A quick youtube search shows how important the deeper lore is to certain parts of the community with videos reach in excess of 200,000 views. To act like all that can be told in the game is ridiculous. Can some parts of it be told in game sure and amazingly so but never to the extent the Grimoire can tell everything.
