Not done watching but now I can play with my niece, which was impossible ln Wii U as she would lose interest after crashing on her 10th wall.
So I thanks this option.

I don't understand how there are people who are so against an accessibility option like the smart steering, especially when it is done as well as it seems to be on MK8D. It only helps in the most basic way by helping people stay on the track while not really giving them any significant benefit over other players. Anything that allows more people to an enjoy such an awesome game is definitely welcome in my book, especially when it doesn't give any real competitive advantage.

Haven't watched the video but think smart steering is an incredible feature, so much so I created a thread about it the other week. It has made MK8 a game I can play with my 7 and 2 year old children where I could never dream of doing that with the WiiU version. Ive heard stories of disabled kids who couldnt play games, being able to play now and I think that should tell you all you need to know about how amazing the feature is, its also implemented incredibly well, albeit a little annoying at first until you figure out how to turn it off.

Such genius features really. It doesn't even give players innate advantages or anything so I really don't get complaints about it.

If you're against Smart Steering 'on principle' then you need to work on your ability to empathize with other people because you're an asshole

Stating the obvious: notice how he loves a Nintendo game.

Obviously the real Jim has been killed and replaced by a #1 Kissboy clone.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I used to be more against the idea of this kind of stuff but as I grown older and seen how these types of things help a lot of gamers either with disabilities or without the years of gaming knowledge and skill to play a lot of games they normally wouldn't. It seems like a win for everybody as more games get seen by more people which means more sales for the developers and more recognition for a game. Its also just nice to do if the developer has the means as it shows a bit of concern for those that many don't think about unless they're in the same room with them.

People hated the auto aiming stuff in Uncharted 4 but I know several people who got through the game thanks solely to that feature and they could care less about how challenging the game is or things like tight shooting mechanics and the like. They just wanted to go on an adventure and have a good time and nothing wrong with that. This could also go for young children or those with a major disability that impedes actions we all take for granted.

I will say this is something I won't hold every developer to. If some indie developer wants to do this but doesn't have the staff or funds to add all these quality of life features then I won't fault them for it. I do think most AAA games should have this kind of stuff in there from the start as it can go a long distance for a lot of people who might not normally be into a certain type of game because of the challenge or what not.

The only problem with smart steering is that it's enabled by default. You have to actually turn it off.

Beyond that it's only a good thing.

I played a full day of Mario kart with two 4 year olds and a 7 year old who had a damn blast instead of being upset they can't drive. It's amazing. I can't live without it now for my kids

Remember when people freaked out over the bubbles in New Super Mario Bros Wii?

Edit: That pinned comment HAS to be a joke, right? Right?

Remember when people freaked out over the bubbles in New Super Mario Bros Wii?

People were losing it when they heard about the things added into Bayonetta 2 by Platinum like just holding a button for a QTE instead of mashing it and those sorts of things. It's never for the hardcore crowd, its for the those outside of it that want a chance but either can't play a game as normally intended or just don't have the skills for it.

I mean, I'm against easy mode in Souls games but there's really people against Smart Steering in Mario Kart? What a world we live in.

smart steering existing is fine but it should either be off by default or there should be an option to disable it for everyone from the main menu

Surprised he didn't quote any gaffers in the white Tanooki suit segment cause that thread was really dumb. White Tanooki suit is the equivalent of the P-Wing in Mario 3. You can completely ignore it.

That Waluigi art though D:

Thanks to this, my gf can have fun playing the game as well.

Thank God for smart steering.

Agreed it's the best feature yet. Now my wife, myself, and my 5 year old can all play together fairly competently.

It's also very well-implemented it's very helpful if you are terrible but not incredibly disruptive if you are advanced and want to use advanced techniques. I have played with it on and can still utilize shortcuts that involve going off course. It has only Course corrected me against my will a handful of times.

It's good that it's enabled by default. The type of person playing Mario Kart that doesn't want it will know how to disable it. The type of person who needs it wouldn't even know to look for the feature in the first place.

I mean, I'm against easy mode in Souls games.

Bizarre attitude.

If an easy mode meant I could actually play through Bloodborne whilst balancing life and a job (not all of us are masochists who want to "git gud") - then what harm would it be to you?

The reality is the lack of difficulty scaling loses Souls game sales.

Watching a 3 year old play Mario Kart with his Dad thanks to accessible steering is a joy to behold.

Was helping my brother move some old stuff out of the house for our mom, and he brought his 3 year old son along. I set my Switch up with Mario Kart and the steering wheel dingus and he was having a blast with it. The accessibility features are really great.

It's annoying, but why risk having the people that need it not turn it on because they don't know its a thing?

Besides that, autosteering has no negatives. It's not like its better than actually driving.

Well, back in my day I fell off Rainbow Road ten times each race uphill both ways in the snow and this is why kids these days are wimps and thanks, Obama.

Seriously.

What is the argument *against* having these options available?

Particularly, as the video shows, it actually puts you at a competitive disadvantage if you use it against other players.

Who gives a shit either way for either game? I've spent way too much time posting in accessibility threads recently, but people who actually spend time worrying about whether other people are getting sufficiently gud at a video game at just sad and I feel sorry for them.

People against smart steering obviously do not have kids

I'll have you know that back in my day we had to make do with what we got. We would get up at 4am to drive through Rainbow Road both ways with constant lightning. Then once we had got back home only once we'd learnt the shortcut in Wario's Stadium would we get any dinner. And you know what? We liked it!

I honestly haven't seen many people arguing against its inclusion, unless I'm just not looking in the right places. Most of the complaints I've seen have been about it being on by default and the way to turn it off not being immediately clear

edit: Oh hey I recognize that gaf post at about 2 minutes in

People against smart steering obviously do not think about anyone but themselves.

Just because there is an option that you believe is 100% not meant for you, doesn't mean it's a throwaway or a waste in resources. Try thinking about what this alternative option can do for someone that truly needs it.

Smart steering has saved my ass more often than it's frustrated me. I'm pretty sure it legit breaks physics in your favor in a few cases, but a few stages make it totally flip out, like Wario's Goldmine and Toad Harbor (that thing does not like railroad tracks).

I know that it's not the topic at hand but... why?

Because it changes the whole nature of the game.

Bizarre attitude.

If an easy mode meant I could actually play through Bloodborne whilst balancing life and a job (not all of us are masochists who want to "git gud") - then what harm would it be to you?

Git gud is just a meme and you do not have to go train at Hayabusa Senseis place to beat the games, I'm sure many people who think they're masochist games would be able to easily beat the games if they gave them a chance.
They're so tightly crafted that making things easier would result in completely different experience.
But yeah, I guess this is going off-topic.

Smart Steering is great for my 3-year-old as it allows him to stay in the race during a GP but turned off in Time Trials so he gets the hang of actually driving.

It's good that it's enabled by default. The type of person playing Mario Kart that doesn't want it will know how to disable it. The type of person who needs it wouldn't even know to look for the feature in the first place.

That's... actually a very good point.

Accessibility features are fine as long as they're optional. I wish the earlier installments had smart steering back in the Wii version, would have been great for some family members >.<

The only time I think I actively disliked any accessibility feature in a Nintendo game was New Super Mario Bros Wii, because there the Super Guide wasn't really optional. If you saw the block, your save file was marked as having used it, even if you didn't. Which was kind of annoying. Nintendo mercifully fixed that in later games thankfully.

So....
seriously, what's up with the "skeleton warriors" bit that seems to be in most of Jim's videos? Is this a joke I don't get or is it just something random being thrown in for randomness' sake?

But guys, how will our children learn how to play the game, or learn how to do anything in life if they don't have to learn how to steer properly in Mario Kart?
