Bloomberg: Sony's Fate/Grand Order (mobile game) making more than Pokemon Go in Japan

Fair enough... But would that even matter if you have a game like Dokkan Battle (which I play), which generates a really nice steady stream of income?

It wouldn't necessarily have to be at the top of the charts to justify continuously making content for it, I guess was my point.

Dokkan Battle's success relies a lot on Dragon Ball's popularity though.

Fate isn't exactly a super hot property overseas in the same way.

I would... rather debate this, but eye of the beholder and all. For my money, it's considerably better than most other mobage RPGs, and I've enjoyed my time with it so far a good deal more than Granblue or the FF spinoffs.

Story or gameplay? Story can be interesting at times, sure. In no way is the gameplay for FGO better than any of the FF mobages that are still around or Granblue though. Doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable but gameplay is not FGO's strength.

The chicken and egg question is if Fate would have become popular if those scenes hadn't been included as originally planned - because then the "well only 1% of the scenes were porn" argument goes completely out the window. Same kind of rhetoric a few people use to claim the American civil war wasn't about slavery

It would have and it has been. The points people liked were the actual story, not the badly done porn scenes that were in like 1% of the total game. That goes for tsukihime and fate.

The breakout for Tsukihime was specifically because it had an overtly strong story that essentially overshadowed the sexual content, and was very uncharacteristic of a doujinsoft game in those days(2000 and before), and Fate continued and expanded upon that.

I'm gonna miss the pokemon go craze. Such an amazing phenomenon. It was an honor to be in Seattle the month during release. Every single person was playing. Heres hoping for gen 2 next summer

I thought that the game came out without Iwakami's involvement but other than that he's certainly got the record to be able to do this without much complaint from Sony since he's made Aniplex lots of money from producing Garden of Sinners to Fate/Zero, Monogatari and Madoka. Probably shouldn't be a surprise that they are looking to do a game in a similar spirit on Madoka considering that.

Figure that the games are treated like other cross media that Aniplex, IP holders, etc control with production committees and such.

That said, I do feel that the mobile market is consolidating among large cross media brands/IP and increasing production and maintenance costs which raises the entry barrier to new competition ie. New IP will find it hard to break in whilst existing IP can still make it (like the FF branded games).

The PC version of Fate/Hollow Ataraxia (basically the sequel to the F/SN VN, though technically a fandisk) has its own fair share of sexy times with every notable female character who has a romantic interest in Shirou aside from Bazett. Including adorable romantic cat pajamas lovemaking involving Rin with a lot of tsundere involved. I haven't actually seen those scenes, mind you, but F/SN's sex scenes are basically superfluous and worked around for the console releases. Hollow Ataraxia is somewhat lighter in tone and features a lot of great comedy, it's a shame neither F/SN or F/HA will ever get an official English release.

It is surprising that F/GO is making so much dosh, but good for Type/Moon, I suppose. Honestly I enjoy the narrative and interactions of Fate/Grand Order more than the actual gameplay (the actual strategy and options are severely limited), though it's a neat time-killer.

The fate series is quite popular among anime fans around the world so I have faith that Sony will make an English version.

An English version happening at some point, sure, but in a way I can't help but feel it'll go the way of every other similar game that's gotten an English release.

And by that I mean "We are sorry to say that we are shutting down service in 90/60/30 days." within six months of launch.

A lot of the Namco Bandai ones are still going strong after a year plus (Dragonball Dokkan Battle, Tales of Link), and like them, Fate/Grand Order is based off of an existing property. It'll be fine.

On another note, while we're talking about English versions of things - It's a shame IMO, while I don't have any delusions of Fate/ being particularly huge, I do feel that its potential is being severely squandered by Type-Moon's reported complete inability to work with western partners who are interested in doing English+FIGS releases of their content. Every single piece of content in the series that has made it westward has been something made by a Japanese partner that happened to have a localization team of their own (Latest example being ASW's rerelease of Melty Blood for modern computers). And unfortunately even if T-M was willing to let someone license the VNs for localization it's way too late now. The VN boom on Steam has died down because of a flood of kusoVNs getting released. Case in point being that NekoPara has sold 300k, whilst Steins;Gate has only sold 20k on Steam *Shakes fist*. I mean, maybe if F/SN gets a PS4 port or the Tsukihime Remake (lol) gets a PS4 release the time might be ripe again, but otherwise a lucrative ship has long since sailed.

Well, to be fair, Namco is managing those ones directly, ja?

Every other example I can think of, like Chain Chronicle, was farmed off to a 3rd Party mobile publisher which proceeded to severely mismanage their version of the game.

If only they'd make English version like Granblue, I'd be all over it.

There is an English version. It's not officially released in the west but if you get the Chrome app or find an apk on android you can just change the language to English. VO will still be Japanese, of course.

Wow nothing stops the Fate train huh? I always wondered why Saber is so popular. Maybe cause of her past connection?

Really should start getting into the series one day.

The reason why Arturia is so popular is because she is a cute gothic lolita maid waitress.

Carnival Phantasm is the best. Also check out "All-Around Type-Moon", which is basically the manga equivalent - body-swapping shenanigans, Red Saber appearing because of Rin's impossible ineptitude with technology, magical girl hilarity with Illya and Miyu...

Honestly, Fate in general has so much potential for comedy. Not there isn't some great serious stuff too, because there absolutely is and plenty of it.

So I'm bumping this thread.

Why?

Because F/GO just made international headlines again:

Worldwide App Revenue Grew 52% Over 2015 During the Christmas Weekend

The relevant bit:

This strong holiday period for both stores was led by consumer spending in some of the world's top apps and mobile games. The top five earning apps overall on the Christmas holiday worldwide this year were Supercell's Clash Royale, Mixi's Monster Strike, Supercell's Clash of Clans, Niantic's Pokémon GO, and Sony's Fate/Grand Order—all games.

That's worldwide, and seems to be in order of gross earnings. So it's behind Pokemon worldwide, but F/GO managed to crack the top 5 in earnings over the Christmas holiday, leading up to January 1st (edit: hurp, no, "just" Dec. 24-26, which is even more amazing), on the back of Japan and scattered international sales alone.

And this is being cited in places as wide-ranging as cnet, so it seems to be a legit source.

Absolutely incredible. All hail the power of Merlin in the gacha, it seems.

(I may have been amazingly lucky enough to manage an NP2 Merlin from free rolls)

(yay)

-

As an aside, would this be the proper place to talk about the announcements they made over New Year's? F/GO has started to provide info on what'll be happening with the game in 2017, now that the first story campaign is over.

There's been so many of this fate series, are they all connected? If I want to get into the series, where should I start? Which anime I should start first and where to go from there.

And that's not even being officially localized yet in relevant territories! Can you imagine when its actually brought officially into these markets?

They are all tangientially connected. Some are spinoffs, others are direct prequels and sequels of other series. There's alternate universe/timeline stuff going on as well. Everything is connected in some way, even if by the barest of hints. That's how Type Moon rolls generally.

I guess the most straight forward way for a new comer to get into the franchise is through Ufotable's adaption of Fate Zero, and then Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works.

Just remember that its only a portion of the Fate/Stay Night story and it'll be fine as a beginners guide.

Is there something I'm missing? It looks like a run-of-the-mill gacha game in an ocean of them. How is it sitting so high?

With these types of games, you use the IP and namesake to your absolute advantage.

Type Moon is HUGE, and by definition Fate is as well. With TM's clout, they can leverage all of their set popularity and connections to gain an automatic large mindshare, which then expands to the casual sector through further marketing and promotional efforts.

Is there something I'm missing? It looks like a run-of-the-mill gacha game in an ocean of them. How is it sitting so high?

In its later chapters in particular, it plays and provides an experience much, much more like a traditional RPG of the sort you'd play on a set-top console or a dedicated handheld than a "gacha game". The later chapters, starting with the London chapter but especially the Neo-Camelot, Babylonia and Final chapters, step up the game in terms of presentation and storytelling substantially. The game is basically attracting a lot of the core gamers in Japan who used to play, or would otherwise play, on consoles and giving them an experience of that sort on their more ubiquitous phones instead.

There have been a decent number of games sort-of trying for that approach, but Grand Order's possibly the first one to really knock it out of the park. As a result, over the past half-year especially the game's gotten tons of good word-of-mouth and press.

Damn those are some really impressive production values for a F2P game. Yeah if you're really into anime style turn based battles, I don't see why you wouldn't do it on mobile, and therefore why the Japanese console industry is in a rut.

It's worth noting that this is old footage; the chapters I mentioned up the productions values quite a bit above even this. The last three chapters are legitimately visually impressive, especially since they're casting a pretty wide performance net in terms of phones. I would post some footage, but I also don't want to risk spoiling people

I would hesitate to call Type-Moon "huge"; they've done a good job building a dedicated fanbase over the past 17 years, but it's only in the past few years that they've even begun to touch the mainstream. F/GO's success owes as much to the game itself as it does anything else.

(I'd love to know how much of a knock-on effect F/GO's had on other Fate media, though. Us getting F/SN Heaven's Feel movie(s), Fate/Apocrypha, and the Fate/Extra TV adaptation all in the coming year is no mistake, I reckon.)

Fate is just the perfect franchise for Gacha. Even as someone who typically hates the genre, I've been playing a ton of this because it suits the world, and the execution is pretty great.
