In regards to the spoiler
she doesn't come to terms with anything. She realises it's all a big dumb plot that she has nothing to do with and then has a complete heel turn whilst Meguro's cheesiest ever song plays in the background. It was awful. "MY MUM LOVES ME. SHE'D NEVER HURT ME. EVERYTHING IS GREAT. I'LL SHOW YOU MY POWER!". Blech.

She totally does, and you're being crazy reductive here. She was forced into accepting that her mom committed suicide. Accepting something that she always knew to be false wasn't easy, especially when it was continually reinforced to be "true" by her extended family/men in black alike... Her big moment was entirely about having faith in herself instead of trusting in adults who "know" better. And it was sweet. I loved how the Phantom Thieves didn't patronize her and give her some lame spiel about love and friendship. It was entirely on her, and honestly in line with how characters realize stuff in P4 after their shadows were beaten. Plus what's wrong with realizing your mother loved you all along?

It would be about a million times better if the lyrics weren't garbled nonsense.

The lyrics in P5 are really, really solid, but Lyn butchers them, lol.

I mean, it varies. Nocturne's story was virtually non-existent.
Most of the vocals in this game are very Engrish, if it wasn't for the official lyrics being released I wouldn't even know what she is saying in so many songs. Although the lyrics are generally fine, in some places they are complete nonsense.

On the crack guy
Fell the bucket
Come on white man spill the bean
Given to
Amass the pride
Come on let and enjoy the sparks
Given to temptation, uh, woo.

You should rectify this.

In Persona 3 you have freedom to do things. SMT games are also far, far harder. Persona is a more mainstream take, so it's easier, but it's never been this mind numbingly dull and easy. The first dungeon put me to sleep. Currently I'm in May and the game is on fucking rails. If you've ever played Persona 3, you'd know you always have choice and it's never on rails.

I also question why you go into dungeons after school rather than at night. Doing so after school gets in the way of social links and school activities. It rids itself of the day/night theme that made P3 so addictive. There was balance between day gameplay and night gameplay. This game feels so restrictive in what you can do because of this design choice.

So far, this is the worst Persona I've played and I've played em all.

The first palace sucked. I was actually bored. Bored while playing an SMT game. How is that even possible?

The pacing should opened up after chapter 2 but it's going to continue to be restrictive. It's persona 4 who introduced the dungeons to be done during the afternoon, tho.

When did I say I have nostalgia for P3's dungeon design? At least P3 has tight corridors so not every battle is an ambush. Out of all the battles I've fought, about 95% so far are ambush in my favor.

Since P5 has actually designed dungeons, I was hoping they were good dungeons in Atlus tradition. After all, we're talking about the same people who made SMT2, SMT3, DDS, EO. Instead, the dungeons have been gimmicky bores. Just because they're designed doesn't make them good. On the contrary, the more I play the more I see the value in P3/4 having random dungeons. P5's dungeons don't jive with the formula. There was a challenge with trying to do I don't know, 15-20 floors in a night in P3 with low stamina. But here, all I have to do is make it to the safe room and put up. Boring.

Are you really complaining about better game design choices? Because having proper dungeons vs randomly generated shit is better. The fact that they're also generally great helps too.

If you think the game is too easy there's an additional difficulty setting on the PSN. Play that.

Hard or Merciless for NG+?

It's going to be easy in the beginning either way, but curious if anybody has an opinion.

I'm thinking hard because of the Money/XP nerf on Merciless, don't want to have to grind my party up for days. Would love to play with the triple weakness stuff without such a big XP/Money nerf.

I'm sure we'll get to see how Yu feels about the P5 protagonist when they're settling their differences out on the court.

Coming soon in Persona 5: B'Ballin' All Day.

We've needed a spiritual successor to NBA Street for a long goddamn time. I would pay $60 for this.

Design isn't better if the dungeon design isn't actually good. As it is, it feels like the dungeons are made for people who don't like dungeon crawlers.

And yet P4 didn't feel restrictive to me.

They vocals are Engrish, although in some places the lyrics are very weird and it makes me scream Engrish !! yet again.

The guy (and in the case of Beneath the Mask, the woman) behind the lyrics are actually German, so Denglisch would be the more apt description.

Sojiro gives you something for getting the highest score on exams.

I'm on NG+ myself and got a tough belt for acing the first set of exams.

Alright, good to know. I was thinking that would be the case, but I also remembered a specific line where Sojiro straight up tells you he won't be giving you any money, so I guess it makes sense it'd be an item lol.

Sure, but as you said, there are actual choices that affect alignment.

Choices do affect the story, but you can't be saying the level of story in a persona game is the same as more standard SMT game. I'm not arguing that there isn't a story, but the amount of said story is definitely different.

Similar yes, but Persona is way more loose when it comes to combat and there's way less of it compared to an SMT game. Plus, combat tends to be far more punishing for the underprepared in an SMT game. Last, while there's a story there, it's much lighter and follows a standard chaos, law, neutral path depending on your choices. You go to an SMT game for atmosphere and challenge, not necessarily story or building character relationships.
Thank you for providing such infos. I kinda like to have different routes.

And yet P4 didn't feel restrictive to me.

Not to shit on your opinion, as there's some very valid criticism in there, but I can't fathom how you could say P5 is the worse game of the series because of the gameplay + restrictive dungeon availability when:
- They gameplay is factually an improved version of P3/FES/P4/G
- The restrictive dungeon were introduced by P4

SMT stories require more active involvement from the player. I'd put SMT IV's story up there with any Persona story (pending how I feel on the rest of P5, since I'm still early), but that story requires a lot more talking to NPCs and engaging with the player's own imagination.

I think I read/heard that money is carried over, S-link 10s getting the benefits at the start of NG+ and isn't Moon(?) (
Mishima
) S-link "auto" 10?

Anyone who actually knows, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I see.
In any case the lyrics are generally good however you could tell in places every now and then that it wasn't written by someone who uses English as their first language.

Funny since I found P3 incredibly boring to play. You call it a "challenge", I call it a boring slog. Fighting the exact same looking boring enemies in P3 over and over and over was not my idea of fun, at all. I'm glad we've moved on from that awful design for the games. P1 and P2 have better dungeon design than P3 and they are ancient games at this point. P3 is by far the weakest MegaTen game in terms of gameplay design on all fronts for me. P5 has great dungeon design (so far), you're only in Dungeon 1, right? Every dungeon has its own theme and identity, S-Links are now tied to the main narrative more cohesively, demon negotiation is back, enemy designs are back to Kaneko demon designs again (which auto makes it 100x better than the Shadows in P3), Meguro music is varied in each dungeon and the bosses (and some mini-bosses) are challenging. I'm tempted to say it's my favourite MegaTen game since the PS2 era, honestly. It's a fantastic game. Laughing at the idea of it being considered one of the best games of the year when you've only just gotten past the first dungeon is more laughable, honestly.

I'm making bank in Mementos, I wanna know what he's doing with his share.
As the leader you're basically holding control over the funds. Profits from the storyline treasure goes into celebration parties.

At the start of the game Ryuji hands you his money at Untouchable and expects you to outfit him properly.

Funny. I'm tired of fighting Incubus' and Pixie's 20 hours into P5...

English lyrics written by japanese that are then sung by germans. What could possibly go wrong?
Isn't the whole "engrish" lyrics thing done on purpose?

There are very few improvements from what I've seen and P4 doesn't feel as restrictive as P5.

Can't really agree with you about the dungeons, I much prefer P5's dungeon design to the randomized corridors from P3/P4. Going through mementos makes it abundantly clear how welcome of a change it is. The dungeons have good pacing, the puzzles aren't very complicated but they add some nice variety, and there are plenty of situations, especially in the later dungeons, where you can be ambushed yourself, or where it isn't easy to get an ambush. I also like the different concepts and setups that the new dungeons allow, scripted events that lead to different gameplay scenarios. Honestly the dungeons are probably the biggest improvement in P5

I agree. They go on a bit long but you're not really supposed to do them all in one day like I did, and there's a certain appeal to going through a MASSIVE palace to steal a treasure at the end.

Hum... he wasn't talking about P3 only. He is mentionning other games that indeed Atlus step up its game in them (gameplay, exploration). If you never played these games, no you can't argue with his examples bcause these games go super deep in them that Persona do not go (Persona rely on the writing while these franchises don't)... Because, yes, I played EO serie and oh god they're fucking deep and good in term of gameplay. I didn't played yet SMT but EO is for me the master of turn based rpgs.
So he is right, Atlus already did better in other games in therm of gameplay and exploration. Even Tokyo Mirage as better battle system than Persona 5.

They will never know how much I spent on maid services.

?
I never encountered them after the first dungeon. If it's taken you almost 20 hours to get through the first dungeon, it's no wonder you hate the game then. Enemies change every dungeon...

I'm still fighting them in Momentos.

If we were only talking Persona 3 style games I'd agree, but I'm also comparing them other Atlus games. Atlus games have a high ceiling for quality regarding dungeons. Comparing DDS' dungeons Persona 5's is hilarious to me. It's like I'm playing a Final Fantasy game in comparison. Or P1's dungeons?

Well what do you expect, you'll obviously get enemies you encountered in previous dungeon in the Mementos area you unlock after each dungeon. That's how it works.

If you want to stop fighting pixies then just start playing 2nd dungeon rather than making it look like you are 20 hours in and progressed far but are still encountering the same enemies and blaming the game for not putting you up against new enemies. You choose to play mementos and not progress past 1st dungeon despite being 20 hours in, the game doesn't stop you.

Imagine if they found out how much money you spent on a fortune teller you just met, they'd never trust you with their funds again.
See, it was on sale on the shopping network. I needed 20 packs of bandages and floss. We definitely don't need a treasurer to oversee our spending.

So you complain about the main dungeons, but now you don't like Mementos, which is in the style of the old dungeons which you said you prefer?

I'm not sure anyone is claiming the dungeons are better than other SMT games, or other Atlus games. Just that they are better than other Persona games. Seems like you are moving the goalposts here.
