The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind expansion announced

Oh jeez. Can you start on Vaardenfell? I think I'll have to play this so I can fail at beating up Vivec again.

Yep - there's a very short tutorial quest where you escape a jail (because Elder Scrolls), but then you can go anywhere in the game world with the latest update.

Sweet. A bit weird to call it Morrowind since you can go to Morrowind in ESO already, but I imagine a lot of people would be confused if you called it Vvardenfell :p

Anyone know how the PC population and PS4 populations compare? Guessing PC is the place to be since it's an MMO?

There's something genuinely comfy about playing MMORPGs on console though, and i'm not just talking controller+couch. Maybe it's because I've played too many PC MMOs.

I'm pretty sure there won't be any way to start there as all 3 factions have established starting areas, but with the One Tamriel update you can go anywhere now at any level, so there likely won't be any level or progression requirement to get there. I'm not sure what the story throughline will be tho. You're still probably going to want to finish your faction's main quest line and the Orsinium DLC before you progress in the Morrowind storyline.

Hm... a new "Warden" class? That's actually a little strange in the context of Elder Scrolls. "Nature" magic is generally not something players have ever had access to.

Is this game actually good?

I'm not MMO averse, I played FFXI and FFXIV for years. How does ESO compare to Everquest or WoW? I know it probably plays nothing like a traditional ES game, but I'm a fan of ES lore so I might enjoy it for that.

The lack of a subcription has just made me assume it's garbage.

Morrowind's got dat brand recognition tho! Imagine how many people nostalgic for TES: Morrowind are going to see this and jump on board if they've made it this long holding out on ESO!

Don't underestimate the population on the consoles. I believe it's healthy on all platforms, based on the activity on the subreddit and Discord servers for the game. I say play it where you're most comfortable for sure!

That sounds great! I've heard the game can pretty effectively be played single player, sounds like a good time to play.

Edit: so the MQ probably needs to be completed first, but running screaming and mostly naked through Vaardenfell @ level 1 sounds like it will match my previous experience playing Morrowind, the One Tanriel update sounds great for new players.

Nah. It's like Orsinium DLC - you can just go straight to it day one, it doesn't tie into the 'main quest' as that's legacy now. They're re-releasing the game - at retailers too, I just checked - as Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind.

It can. The entire main quest, as it currently stands, is single player only - you can't group during those quests. Also the Mage's Guild and Fighters Guild are single player only. And the zone quests - which take hundreds of hours - can all be solo'd (and actually work best solo, because everything is fully voiced and you won't enjoy it if you skip the dialog).

I've been dabbling into ESO for a few weeks now and I like it but this just increased my hype a bit, so it will keep me playing for a while.

how good is controller support for pc?

I got the game in a sale but was waiting for controller support and never got around to playing it

Its fantastic. It changes all of the prompts and completely changes the UI which IMO looks and functions better than the PC default.

It's easily my favorite MMO (aside from EverQuest circa 1999-2002) and I've played em all, but I'm admittedly an Elder Scrolls fanboy. Don't let the lack of subscription throw you off, the game is high quality and they don't treat you like a second class citizen if you don't subscribe (the way for instance SWTOR does). Not to say it isn't worth it. The crafting bag alone makes the optional sub a great value.

Here's the amazing with Elder Scrolls Online:

- The internet HATES it. It is considered worse than cancer online.
- Nobody seems to have played it.

Those that have played it seem to enjoy it. I mean, here's the Steam user score:

This is not how I wanted a modern version of Morrowind, but I guess it's cool.

Realistcally though, isn't this our best bet for a long time? Plenty of talented fans have worked on their own visions of modern Morrowind, but I can't imagine Bethesda working on a TESIIIR over something new or Skyrim 2 or w/e. I'm excited by the prospect of going to Vaardenfell right now.

Honestly, it's the only modern version of Morrowind we'll likely ever see. I'm ok with that. ESO has become kind of a great one-stop shop for a metric ton of Elder Scrolls fanservice while I wait for Todd to feed me another proper entry.

Now if they would just add god damned SPEARS to this game...

Interesting thing is that for a bit, Lore communites were apparently angry at it but once they calmed down and realized it didn't break any more canon than the average TES game, they began to look at it as a great source of information on many topics. Some even very niche that the main games have only hinted at but never explored.

I'd be all over this since I LOVED Morrowind, I just can't find the ESO gameplay enjoyable enough to justify the cost of the expansion :(

It's unfortunate that the game developed a (deserved IMO) stigma when it was first released and for its entire first year of existence that some people haven't been able to shake. That combined with the fact that it's an MMO and some people are just going to stay biased against those, means it's going to continue to have detractors forever, even tho it absolutely hangs with some of the best in the genre like WoW, FF15, GW2, etc.

Not even Morrowing would make me buy this.

Case in point.

The new expansion to ESO takes place 700 years before the events of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, so you'll get to see Vvardenfell in its heyday. Red Mountain hasn't erupted and thrown the province into turmoil, and Vivec City is still in its infancy. All the sights are waiting to be seen, from the mushroom towers of the Telvanni wizards to the docks of Seyda Neen."

Morrowind is my favorite game of all time, so I'm going to find this hard to resist.

I'm not an MMO guy, though, so this was encouraging to hear:

Couple questions for a SP guy:

1. Do you need a subscription to PSN in order to play the game (SP)?

2. Do you need to be hooked up online in order to play the game (SP)?

(I'd love to revisit Morrowind, but I don't have a PSN sub, and my console is usually not connected online.)

I don't know about the first but you definitely need an internet connection at all times. It's an MMO.

Yes and yes. Even if you solo, it's still an MMO.

I admit it did take some weird directions that felt done at the behest of stuffing an MMORPG smack in the middle of the timeline but aside from that there are some interesting stuff it's gone over since then, like the whole Argonian/Black Marsh business.

Can't I just get a Morrowind remake instead!? I actually like ESO but I got it during a very good sale so I got it pretty cheap. $40 is a bit much but let's see what they have to offer.

Yeah. Skyrim actually talks at length (in books mostly) about the civil war and the factions, and the game is all about that period (and the war literally happens around you in Cyrodiil). ESO also expands on some of the Skyrim stuff, e.g. the Thalmor, what happens to Khajiits etc.

Douchebag. Yes, me.

You can start anywhere in the world- because everything in the game scales to your level no matter where you are.

So there is almost zero sense of danger or progression in the game at all, until you get to end game content.

It's pretty much ruined since they scaled everything to your level with their "One Tamriel" update.

Havent played ESO since launch, and this seems a pretty tempting time to jump back in. Does it have an active playerbase on PS4?

Every MMO on the planet has trivially soloable PvE quests. One Tamriel just unrestricted the order in which you had to do them and allowed you to group with your friends across factions. Go solo Craglorn, any public or group dungeon or any world boss if you want a challenge.

I thought the game was pretty terrible and so did my teenage daughter. Lots of fetch quests and some really bad writing. Maybe the game gets better after a certain point. I didn't reach that point.
