NeoGAF Games of the Year 2016 Awards

The House In Fata Morgana was bloody robbed, let me tell you.

There's a reason it won the High Quality award despite less than 30K sales overall. Y'all gotta try it.

Looking at that list 2016 was pretty damn good.

And 2017 is starting off insane. The following are coming to PS4 in the next few days/months. There's actually quite a few more but these are the only ones I'd heard of.

Resident Evil 7
Kingdom Hearts 2.8
Gravity Rush 2
Nioh
Nier: Automata
Yakuza 0
Tales of Berseria
Digimon World: Next Order
Horizon Zero Dawn
Mass Effect Andromeda
Persona 5
Ghost Recon Wildlands
For Honor
Sniper Elite 4
Yooka-Laylee
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 & 2.5
Torment: Tides of Numeria
South Park: The Fractured But Whole
Dragon Quest Heroes II
Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4: Road to Boruto

And then there's Switch as well with Zelda BotW.

I love lists.

I just checked what games are recommended to me...
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=228735757&postcount=2091

3. [XB1][PS4] Overwatch (FPS) = 10 points, 2 honorable mentions
4. [XB1][PS4] Inside (Adventure) = 10 points
5. [XB1][PS4][PC] The Witness (Puzzle) = 7 points
6. [PS4] The Last Guardian (Adventure) = 6 points
7. [XB1][PS4][PC] The Witcher III: Wild Hunt - Blood and Wine (RPG) = 5 points
8. [XB1][PS4] Hitman (Action) = 5 points
9. [XB1][PC] Forza Horizon 3 (Racing) = 5 points

14. [XB1][PS4][PC] Dishonored 2 (Adventure) = 2 points
15. [3DS] Pokémon Sun/Moon (RPG) = 2 points
16. [XB1][PS4][PC] Furi (Shooter) = 2 points
17. [XB1][PS4][PC] Battlefield 1 (FPS) = 2 points
18. [XB1][PS4] Hyper Light Drifter (Adventure) = 2 points
19. [PSV][PS4] Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA X (Rhythm) = 2 points
20. [PS4] Bound (Platform) = 2 points

32. [PS4] Ratchet & Clank (Platform) = 0 points, 1 honorable mention
33. [PS4] Enter the Gungeon (Shooter) = 0 points, 1 honorable mention

I've bought the bolded, and TLG and Dishonored 2 interest me, but the rest do not. I find it odd, that shooters and PVP games are recommended, when I only had Destiny on my notables list. Not to mention, that it recommends me games that are on platforms I don't own.

I'm not sure either.

I've seen a lot of criticism levied at Uncharted 4's gameplay that I would have agreed with about Uncharted 1-3, but not anymore. It's no longer about graphics/presentation vs. gameplay, because Uncharted 4 does both at a very high level. I never would have played out encounters like this or this in previous Uncharted games. I just wouldn't have. I'd have stayed behind cover and slogged through them.

There was once a time where I think you could justifiably knock Naughty Dog for their games not having strong gameplay, and for prioritizing story and presentation, but that all ended with The Last of Us and they've solidified it with Uncharted 4. Their games are a complete package.

Holy shit that was impressive, you are an awesome player, on what difficulty is this?

Meh,UC4 is overrated, rather take Doom or overwatch

Well you take those and a bucket of salt. From now until the end time Uncharted 4 is NeoGAF's 2016 GOTY.

Those are all buys.

Uncharted has come a long fucking way. The original received modest reviews and sales, a lot of criticism before after release for being dude rader, lara rip-off, didn't agree with those criticisms but others regarding length, linearity were right for the most part. The game feels ancient compared to what UC has become now. Cant think of another franchise that improved so extensively in the last 10 years. As far as I'm concerned it's another great piller for the third person action adventure genre.

In my view Uncharted is THE cinematic videogame: defined that genre and continues to execute it like no other.

The recommended list is based on what people on your affinity list voted on but you did not play. So all that it means is that people who had ballots that are similar to yours played a lot of shooters and played some games that weren't on systems you own.

Ah, that explains it. Thanks for clearing that up.

So uh...what game did something new?
Pokemon Go.
The Last Guardian kind of.
Virginia maybe.

That's my major problem with this year though, mostly just stale iteration. Specially coming off a year that had Splatoon, The Beginner's Guide, Undertale and Until Dawn.

Nice...Uncharted 4 is a work of the highest craft. Interesting to see FXV up there. I am just happy FF is still relevant, so that the next game will be in production pronto. I am looking forward to a cleaner slate from the series, and leaving behind the last gen for good (FFXV was tarred by its history)

Wow, two stand out facts....

Uncharted 4 just completely run away with it regardless of which metric was used or how the voted were tallied!

Sony are in something of a Renaissance here. Forget hardware differences between the PS4 and XB1, we all know it's software that sells and Sony's position at number 1 and Microsoft all the way down at number 10 speaks volumes. This is the up hill struggle Scorpio need to climb. Sony's release schedule over the next 2-3 year, with the likes of Spiderman and Last of Us 2, shows no signs of letting up in the quality department.

Nice to see Hitman on the list, and I probably had a part to play with RE4 winning top horror game. Top 3 I expected really looking at how often those 3 would come up, not surprised with UC4 winning though, ND movie love is too much.

1. [XB1][PS4] Doom (FPS) = 14 points Own it, played it, got bored, kinda reminded me of Bulletstorm with how it was received and how disappointing it ended up for me
2. [XB1][PS4][PC] The Witness (Puzzle) = 12 points Been meaning to get this, on sale now on PSN too, might bite.
3. [XB1][PS4] Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (RPG) = 12 points Completed and liked the first one but probably won't play this one.
4. [PS4] The Last Guardian (Adventure) = 11 points Interested in this because I realled liked SOTC, will wait for it to get cheaper.
5. [XB1][PS4][PC] The Witcher III: Wild Hunt - Blood and Wine (RPG) = 10 No, I hate TW3 and everything to do with it.

"It's not a real game, because I don't like it."

The same mantra, that indies quite often face.
Never said it's not a real game. It's just an interactive story, that's one kind of game.
I prefer games for their gameplay first and I dont't want what makes movies in my games.

It's also the best third person shooter, outside of The Last of Us and Max Payne 3. Although Uncharted 4 has much better encounter designs.

It has multiplayer, which just got a co-op mode, and you can replay the encounters from the menu.

Both types of games can coexist. No-one has to venture to the other side, if they don't want to.

hello sir - i would like to talk to you for a moment about our lord and savior, vanquish.
I have played Vanquish and when I wrote that post I only thought about games in grounded settings.

But yeah, both Vanquish and Infamous 2 have great third person shooting if you go into the non-grounded realm.

MGSV and Vanquish are much better than all three of those.
I never got to the shootouts in MGSV because the game is incredibly tedious for the first 2 hours, so I can't speak to that.

It's also the best third person shooter, outside of The Last of Us and Max Payne 3. Although Uncharted 4 has much better encounter designs.

I can agree with this. I'd also put the first Watch Dogs in there, as a showcase of how good shooting controls can be in a sandbox game.

i never really liked the grounded shooting arenas in games. it always felt like it was trying to make the setting adhere to the story too much. it's not bad, but it's not what i appreciate about those titles.

when i look back on uncharted 4, the one thing i remember the most during the shootouts was whipping out an rpg after i had grappling hooked my way between two pirate ships and exploded three people while i was still in midair. it was the closest to vanquish i felt the game got to in terms of fun shootouts and over-the-top action.

A game built around its gameplay at first will never win against a playable movie again. That s the way iy is.

You might be right because only good thing about The Witcher 3 is the story/dialogue and combat is a slog while Bloodborne was all about gameplay. Yet The Witcher 3 dominated the awards.

Man, can't believe UC4 won. Maybe this is the wrong community for me after all :/

Good luck finding a community where hundreds of thousands of people will agree with you.

7 in the top 12 :)

pretty happy with the result of the Blood and Wine Expansion (my #1)

even though Uncharted and Doom were my #6 and #7 respectively, I completely understand their results. They are near perfect games. I simply was looking for different experiences in 2016.

Brace yourself for being-salty comments. It seems like criticizing Uncharted 4 without being salty is impossible according to some at this board.

If contemplating leaving the community because a game he/she doesn't like won GOTY doesn't qualify as salty then I don't know what does. You picked the absolute worst comment to quote.

I can totally see that and the more realistic setting also limits the enemy variety which limits the designers a lot.

That was undoubtly cool but that's not why I personally like the gameplay in Uncharted 4.

To me it's a faster and more mobility version of The Last of Us, which is a more melee focused Splinter Cell, better shooting and worse ghosting abilities where you learn and try to manipulate line of sight while baiting individual enemies.
UC4 also is way more lenient at the difficulty I played at about messing up, which is not what I wanted from TLoU.

It's perfectly possible, for example:

''I don't feel Uncharted 4 deserved to win because of [insert reason 1], [insert reason 2] and [insert reason 3]. IMO [insert game here] was much more deserving.''

This would be a perfectly reasonable response, but posts like this are salty as fuck.:

''Lol UC4 sucks''

Well if ... let's say Ghost Busters for PS4 won GOTY then maybe you too would question the community. Doesn't mean you ask for a community that agrees with everyhing you think and say, but it would just be too far off.

And ok, yes, UC4 is far from that. And I overreacted. I'm just disappointed. So many good games this year and the winner is UC4 (insert 10 reasons why I don't think it deserves being a winner, but you prob. don't care or you already know what I'm thinking of roughly).

You know what, I'm really really happy about 2nd place. And I'm still over the moon that after all these years my fav game came back, and with a BANG!

i did appreciate the methods of approach in both. tlou is sometimes a horror game and far more methodical, while uncharted 4 goes full-blown swashbuckling adventure compared to uncharted 2. the stealth element added a lot too, i felt. it's not as satisfying as mgsv, but mgsv was also a straight-up stealth game, which built its levels around those concepts. uc4 is a linear game where those moments provide spikes in action between what is a surprising amount of platforming and climbing.

I honestly didn't think it'd place higher than fucking Overwatch, but here we are. Totally deserved.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
This years GOTY is going to be interesting with the protest votes going against Zelda for its disgusting inclusion of english voice over and emotion filled cutscenes, a new low for the series, and Persona 5 continuing its traditionally abominable inclusion of entire chunks of contemptible anime.

If there is even a 1 second cutscene in Mario Odyssey, videogames are over and there will be no community for any of us.

I didn't even know about this affinity- and recommendation-business!

The following users have pretty good taste:

Interestingly all of them/you also have at least a couple of games in their list that I like a lot but didn't mention in my own post at all (since I didn't do honorable mentions or hadn't played them yet when I posted my list). Which is to say, apparently we actually do have similar taste, so that's pretty neat.

My recommendations are also quite good, a couple of games I know I'd like but haven't had the time to play (eg Dark Souls III) or which I love but didn't have on my list, plus a few I have never heard of.

What I don't understand are the platforms in brackets - a *lot* of games only have [PS4] and [XB1] in front of them, even though they are on PC as well. Why is that?
