They actually aren't -- QBs are probably the easiest recruits to project. How the transition to the next level is always sort of a crapshoot, but if a kid is a 4-5* QB, he's going to be a stud in college. Deshaun was a 5* and he came in as a true FR against my Noles and you knew immediately he was a star.

With that being said, he doesn't have to "replace" him and no one would expect that he would. He just has to be pretty good and they'll be happy.

Drunk and cant remember his name, but Clemson's next QB is very, very good. We won't be champs again, but we are going to be a damn good team again.

Hopefully someone in the NFL can make something out of Watson but I forget that a lot of these awesome college QB's can't quite cut it in the NFL.

Jalen Hurts is a true freshman who just finished second in the SEC in completion percentage and 5th in the conference in passer efficiency. He played against 10 teams that were ranked at the time of play and his team was 1 play away from winning the CFP National Title.

I think it is a little premature to write the poor kid off after 1 loss.

It doesn't even need to be said. He put his team in position to win. That's all that needs to be said. A defense you'd trust to hold a team in that situation more than any other defense in college football. His defense let him down. The end. Kid will probably hoist a Heisman at some point if he stays 2 or 3 more years.

You know right away if a kid can throw the ball at an NFL level. This kid doesn't have it and he won't have it.

smh.

Jalen's played better than even Lamar did last year. You can't perfectly project how recruits are gonna pan out. It's probably more likely Tua comes in and needs a year or two to settle in than it is Jalen doesn't develop greatly over the season.

Clemson, Washington, Penn State and USC being that high shows that they have no idea what they are talking about.

Bama being one is actually their most reasonable ranking, they are still more talented than anyone else with Nick Saban.

:jnc

UW and USC will both be top ten teams next year barring some crazy injuries.

They have the two best QBs in the conference and the two best defenses.

Blaine Gabbert, EJ Manuel and Dayne Crist were all higher rated recruits in the same year as Andrew Luck.

The only QBs from the 2009 class with much NFL life left in the are the ghost of Matt Barkley and Tom Savage. Jeff Driskell was the top rated (by rivals) QB in 2011. 2013s top two QBs were Max Browne and Christian Sackenberg.

Lamar Jackson won't be an NFL QB either. But the major difference between the two was the competition (harder for Jackson than Hurts) and the talent surrounding him. You can put anyone back there at QB for Bama and the better players all over the field will make them look pretty good at least.

smh.

Whoa whoa what? The defense played amazing considering the situation they were faced with.

They were on the field nearly 20 minutes of the second half, and Clemson ran 53 plays in that time. No matter how good a defense is they are going to get worn down having to deal with that.

The offense let the defense down. They couldn't keep the defense off the field because Clemson was stuffing the run game and Hurts wasn't able to find any open receivers (even when there were some). Or WRs dropped passes. Or the offense committed dumb penalties and stalled. Defense did their job, the offense didn't.

No one's talking about the NFL. We're talking college football. You're in the wrong thread, bruh.

You kinda proved my point though. I said a highly regarded QB recruit is almost always good in college -- whether or not they can hack it in the pros is another story. Max Browne got stuck in the perpetual 5* QB loop at USC but he'll probably go somewhere else and do fine. Driskell was a miss for sure.

The entire previous page was about the NFL prospects of QBs and the theoretically weak crop of them.

That is just not true, very few turn out to be good QBs.

First, LOL at using rivals, composite is the only rankings that matters.

Second, way to ignore the rest of my post proving my point.

Uhh, you added all that shit later. I didn't ignore anything.

And Rivals is fine. The difference between them and 247 is almost always entirely negligible. If a guy is a 5* recruit at a service, he's a 5* recruit. If you want to go off his composite ranking of being the 41st best player in the country and still the top DT QB, fine go for it.

What. Max Browne was a consensus can't miss prospect who lost his job to a much lower regarded prospect. If your theory was correct then Browne would've never been such a highly touted recruit to begin with.

Its being selective in your criteria, when people talk about 5* its always composite, there would be way to many 5*'s if you counted each service's 5*.

Either way, it doesn't change the fact that QB recruits(especially pro-style) are a crap shoot.

You know what stood out to me looking at ESPN's way too early top 25?

No Notre Dame.

Rivals had Dalton as a 3 star and the 23rd best pro style QB in his class. 98th best player in Texas.

From that 2014 list, here are the 4* and 5* pro style QBs:

1. Kyle Allen -- Mixed bag of a career. Probably will transfer to Texas and you can expect he'll start if he does.
2. Will Grier -- Stuck with a dumpster fire offense as a FR, transferred to WVU. Probably starter since their Senior QB graduated.
3. Keller Chryst -- Starter at Stanford now.
4. David Cornwell -- Never heard of him. Who knows what happens next but I see he's leaving Bama.
5. Jacob Park -- Now the starter at Iowa State. Had a decent season it looks like, will be a JR next year.
6. Drew Barker -- Began as the starter, back injury ended his season.
7. Brad Kaaya -- Will be drafted into the NFL after a solid career at Miami.
8. Sean White -- Not very good but Auburn won some games with him when he was healthy. Maybe he can develop further but doesn't look like he'll amount to much.
9. Clayton Thorson -- 3200 yards, 22/9 ratio for Northwestern this season. Can't ask for much more than that.
10. Caleb Henderson -- Transferred to Maryland. TBD next season.
11. K.J. Carta-Samuels -- Lost job to Browning.
12. DeShone Kizer -- Expected to be a 1st round draft pick (top 5-10 mentioned)
13. JJ Cosentino -- Garbage. He'd be crazy not to transfer out from FSU.
14. Michael O'Connor -- Transferred to University of British Columbia and threw for 3600 yards and 22 TDs this season. Interesting.
15. Jalan McClendon -- Backup QB.
16. Mason Rudolph -- Looks like a future Heisman hopeful. Unbelievably talented. Future 1st rounder for sure.

No it's not. If someone is an All-American from one of the organizations who select them, then they're an All-American in general. A 5* recruit is a 5* recruit. There are about 35-40 kids who are 5*s regardless of whether or not you use the composite rankings from some "proprietary algorithm" or not. There's 4 recruiting sites and they more or less all have the same players in the top 30-35. The numbers might shift but the players are largely the same.

...you don't know if someome is an NFL QB from one year in college

Give Lamar time to develop and he's probably gonna be a good QB. Don't immediately do the whole "He's an athlete playing QB not a QB who's an athlete BS" Din't convert him to RB or WR just because he runs well. If Ryan freakin Tannenhill can get 5+ years, Lamar deserves the same in the pros and Jalen deserves it now.

What an awesome game. Was it better than Texas-USC? No. Am I biased bc I went to UT and that game? No.

But regardless, congrats to Clemson and their fans. Maybe "Clemsoning" will mean something different now.

This night was redeemed for me by trolling my fellow "way too serious" Bama fans on Facebook.

Like, how can they truly be so upset? We have a butt load of titles and it was a great year. Let Clemson enjoy their dang win. Watson destroyed us.

It wasn't anywhere near as good as that game. Or last year's game. This game felt sloppy and not particularly memorable to me.

Just watched sportscenter for the first time in years ans really liked the vibe. I have also had 130+ ounces of high gravity homebrew so I might be stupid drunk. That said I have enjoyed lurking in the CFB threads all year. Just wanted to mention that you guys have really helped to keep a smile on my face in a rough year. I love you guys. OK, off to pass out.

Can we retire clemsoning now?

So nearly half the guys on the list transferred with 2-3 (out of 16)being decent players for the team that signed them... yep sure sounds like a sure thing.

Also composite literally takes all the rankings and combines them, hence why it is the only one people consider.

Quarterbacks ahead of Andy Dalton on Rivals.com's 2006 Pro Style QB list:

1. Matthew "The only QB worse in prime time than Andy Dalton" Stafford
2. Mitch Mustain - played in the CFL and Arena League, hasn't played since 2014
3. Juice Williams - played Indoor Football, now works for Georgetown's athletic department
4. Josh Freeman - tacobell.gif
5. Pat Devlin - Tried to go the Joe Flacco route by transferring to Delaware, was the first overall pick of the UFL but had no real NFL career
6. Kevin Riley - World record holder for paper airplanes
7. Neil Caudle - Played in a few games in college, now works as a project manager in Alabama.
8. Chris Smelley - played football for SCAR and baseball for Alabama. Now coaches HS football

Gonna skip a few dudes and go to:

11. Greg McElroy - BCS Champ, played sparingly in the NFL, now works for the SEC Network
12. Sam Bradford - Won a Heisman Trophy, 1st overall NFL pick, single season noodle arm er completion pct record
14. Christian Ponder - NFL first round bust

Skipping some more...

23. Prime Time Andy Dalton

Skipping some more

27. Kam Chancellor - Pro Bowl Safety and Super Bowl Champion

Skipping some more

34. Colin Kaepernick - Controversial political figure

There are as many NFL players in the bottom half of that class as there were in the top half. It's almost like no one is a sure thing!

Yes, if there is an over 50% rate of players becoming quality D1 players -- it's a pretty high likelihood of success. Far greater than most of the other positions and it's in a position where you should have even less chance of success since it's so limited. The guys who have transferred are almost all going to be starters at another school or already are. That is an extremely good hit rate. I think JJ was a huge miss though -- looked atrocious in every instance he got on the field for FSU. I hope he moves away for his sake.

Actually totally forgot that this was that kid. He looked pretty legit. I think he'll do well going forward.
Scott Van Pelt's show is pretty legit
I love it. I always watch it after MNF. There is a segment called Bad Beats that is probably my favorite thing on TV.

It's like 20% at best rofl.

Transferring to a lesser school isn't a plus lol.

I don't want to derail the thread but this is simply not true.

Have you seen his games on Thanksgiving? He had great Playoff games in 2011 and 2014 but we lost for other reasons.

He just happened to play his last 3 Nationally Televised games vs. the Cowboys, Packers and Seahawks with a dislocated middle finger on his throwing hand. The fact he was out there, and still throwing at a high rate is a testament to his greatness.

And I love you LionPride but you can see an NFL QB prospect in College after one great season. Generally you can see if that talent will translate into draft hype.

One of the first QBs picked next NFL draft will be Mitch Trubisky, and he was a 3 star recruit from Rivals. What happened to all the four and five star guys ahead of him???

Draft hype sure, but again, Hurts is a true freshman. He is a year older than me. If Blake Bortles can develop and quickly regress mechanically, Hurts can at the very least get better at throwing the football before he leaves Alabama.

lol dealing with that with my old man right now. Course I'm sad we won, but not overly so. We'll be back. Saban's still in the midst of signing arguably his best class.

Win some, loses some.

After sleeping on it, that really might be one of the best games of football I have ever watched. That fourth quarter was absolutely spectacular and that last drive was something else. Just an incredible game.
