The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ |OT| 200 More Hours of Bad Keeper Runs

At the very least, Edmund said they hope to find a way to resolve the whole "cosmetic mods disable achievements" thing, so it's not entirely hopeless.

I just wish they implemented this sort of thing after they got that sorted out first though. :/

Jesus christ portals are a mess, a miniscule nerf in hp is nothing. I had a decent run going and then in flooded catacombs 2 I got a room with a ton of rocks and two portals that kept on spawning fat bats. Without flying that supposed nerf did nothing. They should decrease spawn rate of portals, not hp.

Apollyon's Void lets him destroy pedestal items and absorb them. If he absorbs an active item, then everytime you use Void it will also use the active item's effect. For example, if you use Void to absorb The Bible, then the next time you use Void you'll gain temporary flight as if you used The Bible. This stacks, so you can have multiple active items. The only exceptions are for items like Pandora's Box and Diplopia which now go away after one use like they normally would.

If Void absorbs passive items like an hp up or something, it will destroy them and apply a random stat upgrade to you. For example, you can absorb Experimental Treatment and instead of its normal effect, you'll just get a random stat increase.

ah cool thanks, I couldn't figure out why it was good, but I only played a short bit last night, didn't understand the stacking.

The answer is to do something similar to how Paradox Grand Strategy games do it - have the game recalculate on each boot a hash based on all the code they want to keep the same (I.e. everything that changes game balance) and use that hash to trigger if achievements are enabled.

Just beat Keeper Greedier on a ridiculous run.

I missed Apollyon and accidentally selected Keeper to start the run.
I walk into the open item room to find a Box with a 2 of Diamonds card in it.
I walk into the shop and bomb the reroll machine which gives me Blank Card and a Battery spawn.

Yeah, ok game. I get it, it's time to actually win a run.

Just beat
Delirium
with Apollyon, in a somewhat interesting run. Got Chocolate Milk and 20/20 vision early, and only got enough +damage to get up to maybe a 7 rating. However, I also got Holy Mantle in one room, then a room before Hush got the Wafter. Had gotten Gimpy in a devil room earlier, but the stupid thing never procc'd once(I know RNG is RNG, but when you take like 15 hits in one room and not get one soul heart for your efforts, something seems wrong). Biggest MVP was getting Book of Revelations on Void early, but also got Satanic Bible from a Library somewhat late, so was getting 1 soul and 1 devil heart per Void use(as well as completing a Super Meat Boy).

Still, got to the new area(after beating Hush with 5 hearts left), and cleared enough to get back up to 15 hearts.....

....before a Telepill took me RIGHT into the damn boss room before I was ready. Beat it with 1 soul heart left. Took forever.

I don't think there's any justification for this room being in the game other than to simply end runs. Abysmal, abysmal, ABYSMAL design this room is.

In case you can't see it, there's a Portal in the middle of the room as well.

Crooked Penny Unlocked. Beating Delirium with the keeper.

Tip, bring resistance runes, tried chaos card, but did not seem to kill it (or I missed, or it must be in its original form), luckily I had high luck + "Endless Nameless" so resistance runes kept dropping when using my one rune.

The Pokeball item is amazing when you capture the enemy spawning portals. You just end up with a shit load of buddy's fighting for you!

Why even do this at all? It's not like Steam achievements matter for crap, you can easily just use a hacking program to give yourself all of them if you want them that bad. Are they trying to protect the competitive Isaac community?

I had that exact same room in some other run. I would have died if it weren't for my item builds. It's a fucking terrible room they made.

The game just got patched...

In seemingly another attempt to ruin the fun of its players, they disabled the ability to add mods by adding them to the resources folder. Thanks to this change, I can't hear my custom soundtrack in the game without adding it through the workshop which will lock the ability to get achievements, therefor remove all my interest to play the game at all. Dammit Tyrone!

...

Fuck everything. I just want my Danny B soundtrack.

Same :\

I did beat Greed Mode with Azaezel at least, though I don't think Lillith unlocked because I had visual mods on, which do block achievements and unlocks (I believe), which is just stupid.

So am I missing something with these starting items? Maggie's not starting with the pill and Samson doesn't have Child's Heart...

I don't think Lilith has Cambion Conception either but I also have yet to beat Satan as her, but the other two should be there, right?

Had Delirium down to a sliver of health as Keeper. Got hit, saw a penny and hesitated for less than a second and died. Fuck this character.

Uninstalled my mods because it's completely halted all positive progress/unlocks for me.

Who thought this was a good idea for cosmetic mods as well?

Afterbirth+ feels like it needed another month or two.

I've been having the worst luck all night trying to get Apollyon to Mega Satan, this isn't something that should be difficult but for whatever reason any good run I get can't access him, any run that can is shit and dies. What I've learned over these failures is how monumentally I hate portals, even more than I though. Nerfing their HP isn't even how these need to be balanced, either what you suggest, they spawn much less, or they need to have a warm up like the nubs before they can start spawning enemies. Most rooms with portals have them layered behind pre existing enemies and obstacles like rocks, meaning before you can even think about going for them, you have to push through those enemies, meanwhile several more have popped up. It's just straight up absurd, on all floors, the amount and types of enemies they can pump out, completely does away with any semblance of a well crafted game

Delirium is immune to Chaos Cards, so you didn't miss, better people be aware of that instead of being very disappointed getting that far with one.

Holy fuck did they rework how rooms of sacrifice appear? Because I have seen, in restarting and trying to Mega Satan like...one per run, mostly at the beginning where it's fucking useless.

Ok, breaking greedier mode is far easier than I thought it would.
It shouldn't be too hard to generate infinite meat boys \ orbitals, get the gnaw leaf and then respawn as The Lost, turtling through the rest of the game.

The bestiary is cool. Kinda crazy to see how much stuff is in the game now considering where it started.

Finally realised that those things were supposed to be nerve endings.

edit: also I want my spider mod as a starting item back, the character editor was disabled with AB+, really got used to that extra info. Good that they incorporated that hud showing stats, though.

Has anyone messed around with the coop in Antibirth? It's insanely fun. Way better than those lame babies they put in the original game. My roommate usually plays as Azazel and gets most of the defensive items while I play as Isaac and take the damage up items. He uses his flight to push unobtainable red hearts towards me and I use my range to take out anything dangerous from far away. So much fun.

I've been watching Northernlion and Kate play co-op and yeah, it looks terrific. Seems like it gets confusing if your characters look too similar to each other but it also looks significantly more fun than how Rebirth/AB/AB+ does it.

Once you make it past floor 1, April Fool seems literally impossible to lose?

Every hit you end up gaining like 5 Black Hearts due to the Gold Hearts (which I don't even have unlocked...). I ended up just killing everything and every Bloat with just Black Hearts. I thought Pong was easy, but this was maybe a bit easier since it's kind of mindless.

Now I guess I get to play the "Hold R until you get a good build and then cheese the challenge" Backwards challenge. And I'm never beating Ultra Hard so I'm not even going to bother, so I guess that'll stay not done forever.

Also the only way to get RERUN is to cheat. What a weird achievement. I don't mean "it's really hard, you have to cheat!" I mean you literally need to cheat to get it. It requires you have mod tools on for some reason... Takes five minutes to just give yourself a bunch of Atk+ items via the debug menu and infinite health and then just warp to the Dark Room and Blank Card + Emperor the Lamb 5 times... It's "Kill the Lamb 5 times with a mod enabled." I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be that way, but I'd think they'd have to code a special exception for this one achievement to unlock via mods (I hope to god, they don't manually flag every single achievement by hand as disabled and it's just a blanket "If achievement class + mods don't unlock"), so maybe it's intended?

I just got my first Lamb Kill with Isaac, so now I can unlock The Lost at my leisure...assuming the item shows up and the Curse Room does.

Managed to reach Delirium with The Lost. Game keeps crashing during the fight again, don't know what to do now, really don't want to fight through all that shit again. Fighting Delirium as The Lost is like the definition of futility, there's just nothing you can prepare for, if Delirium wants to kill you, bam, he's teleported on you and your runs over, Gnawed Leaf feels like the only viable way to approach it, unless I'm forgetting something else.

I had a run earlier, maybe the most Delirium safe build I'm ever going to get, Gnawed Leaf, Stop Watch, Dead Cat, a few orbitals, didn't get to Hush in time, no portal opened up elsewhere, it goes beyond annoying very, very frequently.

This run, I have Dead Cat, Stop Watch and a Knife, enough to get me past Hush but no amount of slow down can stop a telefrag. If it's not a telefrag it's him turning into Monsro II or The Bloat and insta brimstoning near the full length of the screen.

Also, interestingly, I managed to kill a stone head earlier with Euthanasia + Polyphemus, it respawned when I reentered the room but that was cool. Wonder if you could kill other invincible entities with it, maybe the Greed Statue.

What pool is Greed's Gullet even in? Havent seen it anywhere.

Be wary, forced it by having blank card + partial dice (or whatever it's called) + sackboy, be sure to pick it up with as few coins as possible. Picked it up at 99 coins (as keeper), and got no health upgrade only to discover that I lost health if I got below the 75, etc...

Think it takes into consideration what your coin count is when you pick it up.

I used Empty Vessel/Guppy/Punching Bag, but it took a few lives. I also had a Cube of Meat I would go in with when the Vessel procced.

Punching Bag is an item I don't think I've ever used without confusing myself more than helping, I find it interesting that you found it useful for Delirium of all bosses, that's awesome.

That last run failed but a few restarts later I managed it. Started with Dead Cat, from there I found a blank card + joker, so I got a lot of good items, lots of damage up, Death's Touch, Knife, Pentagram, Incubus, found Proptosis, Magic Mushroom, Double Shot some other nice things. What was really nice, the Void portal appeared after It Lives so I skipped Hush, and I found Jera, 48 Hour energy and The Stars in the Void, it meant that I essentially had infinite attempts to down him, teleport away if Mantle gets broken, recharge with infinite batteries, with 9 lives as a safety net. I actually only teleported away twice, it's really not nice when he turns into the Lamb at low health, but my damage was high enough to cut him down before things got too crazy.

I found 3 steam sales that run too, the 3rd was in the void, but it's really nice that 2 of them stack to make all items free, maybe that always happened before AB+, I can't remember.

Just the Keeper left to go to Delirium, hope it's not too bad. After that it's all Greedier mode and Ultra Hard.

2/3 Guppy on Backwards, first Red Chest spawns Guppy's Collar to make 3, next one sends me to a Devil Deal for Brimstone and Abaddon

Challenge done

Which of the challenges are generally considered essential in terms of adding the most useful items to runs? And also beatable for someone who hasn't played 100 hours lol.

High Brow gives you the Jera Rune, which opens the game up to big breaks if you get a Blank Card. It's not really that challenging, although it's not that easy either, but the reward is well worth it. Try really hard to beat this one.

Computer Savvy's reward isn't particularly good, but the challenge is one of the easiest in the game. Useful for warming up and getting a feel for challenges.

Slow Roll is required to actually use Keeper. It's an easy challenge, though.

Pong is another one that's useful for Keeper. Greed's Gullet is the only HP up item in the game that works on Keeper. It's also basically just Slow Roll Part 2, except easier.

April Fool is ultra easy (if you beat the first floor you're basically immortal) and buffs Maggie by a lot. She starts with a Speed Up pill, meaning she has a higher base speed, it adds Speed Up pills to the pill pool for all Maggie runs, and she can always identify it.

I don't think any of the Afterbirth challenges are worth it. And they're kind of tedious. Gold Bombs and Gold Hearts are kind of useful, but the challenges for them are a pain. Plus' challenges aren't particularly hard, at least the ones with good rewards aren't.

There are others I think are kind of useful, but the challenges aren't really easy (Waka Waka for example has a fantastic unlock but is an awful challenge).

April's Fool unlocks Maggie always starting with a speed pill, and Pong unlocks Greed's Gullet, which synergizes incredibly with the Keeper. Those are maybe the easiest of the new challenges yet they provide terrific unlocks.

In addition to those already mentioned, The Host unlocks tech.5, Demo Man unlocks the Chaos Card, Cursed unlocks Credit Card, and When Life Gives You Lemons unlocks the Card against Humanity.

I can't imagine life without Pethro or Algiz or Death's Touch, but those challenges are stupid hard.
