Mario Kart 8 is the worst 3d mario kart

The OP is mourning the loss of Petey Pirahna, Funky Kong, and Baby Bowser when it comes to cool characters?

Eesh.

I can agree about the battle mode though, that was surprisingly weak.

I agree with battle mode being hot garbage and the roster being extremely questionable but everything else makes it stand at the top. Mario Kart 8 is the best Mario Kart game hands down.

Yes, my 250 hours certainly agree with you there.

It's my second favorite after Double Dash. My biggest complaint is the roster. The tracks are great, imo.

I haven't seen a more wrong OP in a long time. MK8 is fantastic. Battle Mode being ruined is a real shame though.

It has the best soundtrack and looks amazing, but I have to agree with you.

(Edit: it's better than the Wii game. I love mario kart, and I hated that game, although playing on an emulator with a 360 controller and high res split screen was more fun..

What I'm agreeing with is that Mario Kart 8 ain't all that. It's good, but it gets dull really fast. The N64 game is my favorite.. Best crash physics inleseries)

I couldn't quite articulate myself, but my complaints are probably somewhere in your breakdown.... The nature of the game play.. It's like once you know how to play the game decently, you can play it in your sleep. Almost every track feels nearly identical in how you play the game.. There's no complexity to it and it feels dull. I was excited about the DLC tracks but even while playing them I felt bored by them.

The tracks being fucking wide was a complaint I had with double dash even, but yeah, it's worse than ever. It's like they knew some people kept going off track so the solution was to make the track wider than the sun. Have you ever driven up to one of the characters jumping around on the side of the race track? They are enormous! It almost suggests that the player characters were scaled down to give ample space for players who have trouble staying on the track. I've often thought that scaling the entire level down would make for a tighter, more fun race track.
Great post, nails the feeling or boredom I got from almost every track. They are wide, sterile, and devoid of challenge.
EDIT: Electrodome, Mount Wario are two of the best MK tracks ever.
Electrodome is one of the best ever are you kidding me. You race in a straight line the whole time except for a branching path antigrav segment, and there are no hazards at all. It is the archetypal boring as fuck, terrible Mario kart 8 track. You would probably get a heart attack if you played GBA bowsers castle 3 on Wii or rainbow road from double dash

In all seriousness, considering how meh 64 and Wii were, how Battle Mode has ALWAYS sacked, and how many tracks in this game outright obliterate Double Dash's, I can't quite agree
MK64 multiplayer was amazing, not sure what you're on about with it being meh.

You make some sensible arguments about how the game is disappointing in some ways, what could have been better, etc.

But you can't rationally argue it is worse than Double Dash, or MK Wii, or even 7.. I'll listen to 64, for people who are heavy into battle mode, because it was pretty much the main attraction in that game, or Mario Kart DS being better.

But it is not the worst 3D mario kart. By any stretch

I thought 7 was the worst. The ex and I played it once, turned it off and went back to 8

Well ones on an HD console and the other is on a not too powerful handheld so that's a no brainer...

I thought the courses were much more creative with the shortcuts in 7, and gliding mattered so much more. 8 is essentially an upgraded 7. But 7 has proper battle courses.

64 is easily the worst 3D Mario Kart.

MK8 has the worst Rainbow Road but they make it up with two fantastic Rainbow Road remakes.

I can see the flaws in MK8 but honestly I was never bothered by them. I loved playing it, but I love every Mario Kart game I play. They all have their quirks and flaws but I think they're all a blast to play.

Come on, there's no need for this tone.

Your assessment of the items is patently wrong and ridiculous. They absolutely do help you come back from behind.

I mean, really?

And no innovation? How about the 250cc mode?

Well the battle mode certainly sucks balls, but that's all that I can agree with here.

The last great battle mode was in Mario Kart DS.

As for everything else, Double Dash is much, much worse on every count.
Mario Kart Wii was much better than DD and 8 is a nice leap above that even.

haha, I loved it, I think the series got always better over time. love the tracks and the hover feature. but I didn't play it nearly as much, maybe it's just right for me as a casual mario kart player

I kinda agree about the roster though

I haven't played Mario Kart 8 but I don't see how it could possibly be worse than the N64 version. That game was some real hot garbage.

dawg, you don't know SHIT about Funky Kong

I'd definitely have him over the stupid baby characters lol. And Pink Gold Peach. Outside of the weak roster and battle mode, MK8 is pure gold.

Either everyone else is crazy or I'm the crazy one.

The last Mario Kart I actually enjoyed was Double Dash, the controls and drifting are atrociously bad in MK8 and they're not in MKDD. So I vastly prefer MKDD.

MK8's soundtrack is just white noise to me because I don't even remember what any tracks sound like other than it sounds jazzy, not counting the classic track remixes the only memorable tracks are Electrodrome and Cloudtop Cruise (Which itself is also just a remix of Gusty Garden Galaxy).

Also MKDD didn't have me spending 5 minutes picking various ugly looking parts for my kart while my friends just sit there waiting.

MK8 is my second least favourite, SMK is by far the worst.

I concur that the tracks in MK8 are more boring compared to the tracks in MKWii.

On the rest, I don't care really, since for me it's just a fun cart racer, and not the second coming of christ.

Sorry, OP. I disagree 100%. It's my favorite MK period.
You don't have to say sorry, we're just talkin'
BTW everyone that says battle mode has always been bad, or that double dash was bad, I am 100% convinced has no idea what they're talking about
I stopped playing this game when I get to 10.000 coins in online multiplayer and you say you only get to first place once in 20-30 hours? Maybe you're playing it in the wrong way.

Also, Double Dash is the worst 3D MK.
Learn to read breh, that's not what I said.

I agree that the roster selection for the main game (no DLC) is pretty craptastic and the battle mode is insulting. Not being able to knock characters off the track was weird, and the item RNG could use a tweak. With all that said, I thought it was a great turn-around from the last few entries. For me, it's right behind MK64.

Why are baby characters in every Mario Kart? I don't think I've ever met a person who likes them. There are more than enough possible light weight characters to make them unnecessary.

100% correct OP, thanks for saying this. I'll still play DD sometimes.

The main problem to me is that Mario Kart 8 is a racing game, and racing games are BORING. You go through the track the same way every time; once you get a handle on where the turns are at, there's nothing left to learn.

Double Dash required a lot of item management and strategy. You can't even hold item behind you, you had to time it and throw them backward. Positioning and aggressiveness were important, the races were constantly heart pounding. There is none of that in Mario Kart 8, there's just... racing. Maybe once in awhile you throw out a red shell if you get one.

I probably won't buy another Mario Kart unless it's really interesting.

Is anyone here even still playing Mario Kart 8? I played Double Dash throughout the entirety of the Gamecube's run.

WTF is this. Rainbow Road 8 is easily one of the best, along with Wii and Super.

Worst Rainbow Road is without a doubt the original 64.

I don't agree sir and/or madam, I actually think it's the best one despite having issues with battle and the roster.

But, you're entitled to your opinion. I find it interesting at least.

Not all masterpieces are liked by everybody I guess? I particularly love MK8 physics, feel and track design, they are very close to those from high class arcade titles from SEGA and NAMCO. Smooth and sophisticated.

Double Dash feels like driving a caterpillar in comparison.

Granted, I haven't played a ton of this series. I mostly just played the first, played MK7 for a bit and really liked it, then tried MK8. I do own it but have barely touched it.

I know that the OP is controversial but I definitely agree with some of what they're saying. During my limited time playing it, it definitely felt like the items were underpowered compared to past entries, where worst-to-first could happen at any time. When I fell behind, it seemed like there was zero chance I could catch up, and that felt both very discouraging and very un-Mario Kart to me. I don't know if this mirrors anyone else's experience or if I just need to git gud. Oh, and with the tracks all being very wide, the course design seemed less interesting.

I haven't touched the DLC (haven't spent enough time with the core game to justify its purchase) if that matters.

Well, according to the voting thread for GAF's favourite Nintendo games MK 8 is by far the most popular Mario Kart.

Honestly, I disagree. I always liked the Kart games, but never enough to buy them myself. But with MK 8 I'm so glad I did. It is by far the best MK game I've ever played. It's beautiful, plays like a dream and the tracks are mostly amazing. Even the DLC is great.

Everything you said was spot on. Coming back in this game, online at least, is really difficult. It wasn't like that in MkWii online, where I would consistently place at least 3rd. Its a combination of items sucking, high speed players getting away on the first lap, and people in the back hitting each other slowing everyone down and letting the people high up escape.

We saw BABY PARK in HD in MK8!!!!!

But it sucked. It made me realize that the reason Baby Park was a blast in Double Dash was because of the constant barrage of giant bananas and bowser shells. You had to pay attention, shit was flying everywhere.

In fact, if you play Baby Park on MK8 and Double Dash one right after the other, it pretty much will define the differences between those two games.

As someone that loooved playing on orginal Baby Park. This is so true. D:

Nah. 8 is potentially best in the series, despite the worst battlemode. If it wasn't for that and the crappy roster, it wouldn't even be a contest, 8 would be so far ahead of all the other games.

Absolutely. I hate the stupid roster padding (koopa kids and babies and gold/silver Mario and peach) and the battle mode flat out sucks. Otherwise, the game is absolutely the best in the series.

My favorite battle mode has to be either SMK or MK64.
