Ghostbusters Review Thread [Certified Fresh - 75%]

Just listened to this. Sounds awful as a sequel to Ghostbusters, but reviews online make it sound like a decent fun flick overall. That main bad guy does sound absolutely shoddy though.

Whenever I get around to seeing it I'll have to separate my brain telling me the film is Ghostbusters, and instead just a generic comedy flick.

Also a bit cringe that rumoured queef joke made it in lol.

The queef joke was hilarious. Garnered lots of laughs in my theater.

Eh, I like Joe. Usually just watch his gaming reviews though. I'll judge the movie fully when I see it but as I said above it sounds terrible as a new addition in the Ghosbusters series and more like something that works well because of chemistry and jokes in any "Paul Feig" movie.

I don't dislike him, but I don't take his opinions seriously at all. I watch his stuff sometimes for entertainment value, I like some of the stuff he has for games for instance, but when it comes to movies... lol.

I was hunting Hypno and it tricked me into seeing Ghostbusters. I liked it a lot.

To be honest I'm not sure what was great about the original. The cartoons (including Extreme Ghostbusters) were pretty good, but the old one is just a bunch of dick metaphors, especially GBII. The new one has some overdone jokes but it's funny. Kevin is great.

I'm so sad about Bill Murray's cameo being completely awful. Does he hate Ghostbusters so much that he had to deliver a completely flat performance? :(

OHHH it's the original, lol. If you search Ghostbusters on Google, you get a mix of info because of the title overlap. I got the movie times for the new one and a mix of metadata (including the wrong RT link) for the old one. Sorry, lol

So I'm guessing this is flopping box office-wise?

All this world building gone to waste.

I wouldn't say it's a flop but it's not doing great, it looks like it's going to get around $50 million opening weekend and open in second place, which isn't great for a big budget SFX film. The budget is at least $150 million so when you factor in marketing and the cut for the theaters it probably needs to make a minimum of $500 million world wide to break even (and not getting to open in China is going to hurt that world wide box office a lot).
Of course a film like this has other sources of revenue, it has a lot of merchandise although there are reports of the merchandise not selling well so who knows how well that stuff is doing for Sony.

Unless the film performs better then expected in the upcoming weeks I feel like it's a toss up if Sony continues making more films in this universe. They don't have much else going for them though besides James Bond and Spider-Man.

I think Sony will move forward with more GB films even if this movie doesn't break even for them. As you said, they don't have a lot going for them, and smaller GB films with smaller budgets could be moderately profitable for them.

Rotten Tomatoes user reviews are at 41%. The hate from the male demographic and the way they are pouring into sites to leave bad reviews is absurd. I saw the movie last night and absolutely loved it. I was laughing and smiling from ear to ear the whole time. My fingers are crossed for box office success. Can't wait for a sequel!
Same here. Loved this movie.

If this wasn't an all female cast this would probably be one of the top movies of the summer.

I can't believe people think a website that allows fanboys to upvote or downvote any movie they want to anonymously and with impunity is an accurate representation of audience reaction.

I don't think that website expected this situation, honestly.

This is something new. Like the GamerGate of movies.

Do remakes usually do good business? I think most normal nerds that don't want to see it just think it's an unnecessary remake that copies the original and doesn't do it anywhere near as good. That's why I haven't seen it.

Even the Rotten Tomatoes consensus says it pales in comparison to the original. Some of those reviews marked fresh say it's ok or give it a 6. Doesn't exactly seem like it's must see.

Well Jurassic World and Star Wars seemed to do alright with basically retreading the originals to set up a new franchise. And I'd say this was more enjoyable than World (though I liked both)

They've been through it before. When The Dark Knight came out, the idiots on that board tried to launch some kind of campaign to downvote The Godfather and Shawshank Redemption so that TDK would be #1 on the top 250 movies list.

IMDb is a cesspool with little to no moderation where trolls and idiots run rampant.

Just wondering: are the people that like this movie fans of the original ghostbusters movie? Is this a good movie but a bad ghostbusters movie?

I love the original Ghostbusters. Different kind of film with the same premise. I wouldn't call it a bad Ghostbusters film. That's Ghostbusters II, which by the by, I still enjoyed.

Loved the original. Liked this. Would recommend this.

It's just a modern take on the original idea. I think once people accept that a new movie isn't telling them that the old one should go die in a corner they'll be happy.

Good to hear what everyone thought about it. I'm interested in watching it especially since I loved Ghostbusters as well as enjoying GB2. I'm feeling somewhat cautious about it still after that horrendous marketing campaign.

Yup. I went into it without nostalgia goggles, and I enjoyed it just as much as the original. It's a very different movie, and that's OK.

They will write studies about how the marketing campaign was completely fucked up from the beginning

I think it really depends on how well it does in future weekends and possibly home video sales. If it takes a huge nosedive next weekend I would guess a sequel is probably off the table, but if it stays steady and does okay on DVD/Blu Ray/Streaming then a sequel may happen.

Same, though future versions are going to have a much lower budget and or cast changes.

:/ - if it just had better writing and was actually funny then it would be one of the top movies this summer. The female cast has nothing to do with it being bad and are great actresses. I've liked them in other films they are in. This one just isn't well done.

I've heard a lot of mixed things on this, positive reviews just go on about the haters being wrong and the negative actually review the film in detail and share a lot of negative points, either way it's not Paul Feigs best and which is made even worse by it being Ghostbusters
So Which to believe?
The one thing people do share a opinion on is Hemworth being the funniest in the film, a none Comedian actor out doing the comedians.
The irony.
My question is if it's worth adding to my film collection or is it just another Paul Feig film that will be forgotten in time.

I think you need actually read those positive reviews or just go watch the movie. Either way it's pretty clear what you believe.

That it's a Paul Feig film and not as bad as the trailer made it out to be but falls flat at living up to the Ghostbusters name?
That's the general impression I've got.
You however sound like those positive reviews because I never said it sounds fantastic like some in here are making out you think I have an agender.
But yes watching it myself will answer my question.
Then again I don't understand the hate for ID4 resurgence and the love for Batman Vs Superman
I thought ID4 Resurgence wasn't anywhere near as good as the original but was a fun, no brainer flick and Batman Vs Superman was terrible

It's a good to decent film that of course, can't reach the heights of the original film. That's what most reviews are saying but I have seen some absolutely hate it. So, like most films it's quality varies.

Just back from seeing it in IMAX.
I really enjoyed it, more than I expected.

Not a huge fan of the Hemsworth character, but the main team is fantastic, the jump scares are good and the tech is a blast to watch, especially in IMAX.
It's a stunning movie at times.

People watch JP for Dinosaurs and it delivered. Star Wars for Space battles and laser sword fights, it delivered.

A comedy though...well there is a huge difference in the types you get, and new GB is very different from the originals comedy, so as a sequel, or reboot, retread, whatever, it doesn't deliver.

I think most people will admit JW and SW:TFA are weaker than the originals, but at least they were more of the same.

Went in not knowing anything about the original and not giving much of a shit either and I ended up really liking it a lot and actually caring about ghost busters which surprised me the most. Holtzman was probably my favorite on the team for some of the later scenes and I thought pretty much all of her stuff was great.

Curious to see what they do with a sequel if they get one. Hope they do.

Went and saw this today. GF really wanted to go, I was lukewarm but hey, I've dragged her to worse movies for her. I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. It's not a classic by any means, but the cast works well together, everybody has a role and a personality. Is it better than GB1? No, but GB1 is fairly unique in the way the cast really clicked -- doubt GB1 could be topped today, it was really a lightning strikes kind of thing.

I don't really get the hate, other than some MRA's somewhere decided that because the cast was all female they wanted to burn it down. The men in the film aren't even all that ridiculous (well, the receptionist was, but he was pretty clearly meant to be specially ridiculous. Sure enough, looking at people who submitted negative reviews on metacritic the vast majority made a single review against ghostbusters, or they reviewed a bunch of video games previously....

So, I wonder what James Rolfe has been doing all weekend.

(Let's not discuss his review or opinion. That's been discussed to death.)

It reminded me of the first Pirates of The Caribbean in where it's just an ultimately harmless and fun summer flick.

The only thing that detracted from my viewing experience was that the audience skewed super old, so the senior citizens were enjoying and laughing at things I didn't find particularly funny, and the scenes that I did find funny the theater was silent lol.

I like all the small nods to the franchise in the movie. I like when they are thinking up a poster and Melissa McCarthy can be heard in the background saying "how about, if there's something weird in the neighborhood..."

Loved that.

This movie was a clear love letter to the series but with a Feig style.

Me and my wife saw it earlier today, and it was a fun movie. We both really enjoyed it. The level of hate the movie got is so absurdly disproportionate to the quality of the movie it's embarrassing. It's a harmless flick, with some fun stuff in it.

I only have a few small issues, however. I'm a big Kristen Wiig fan, but I felt her and Melissa McCarthy, who are the heart of the film, are kind of bland characters. McCarthy sometimes has a bit of a Ray vibe, as far as being the paranormal enthusiast, but it didn't push it as far as it could have. Wiig was the skeptic character, almost Egon like, but again, they didn't really push it enough with her either. They have their moments, but they felt really undercooked.

Kate McKinnon was the standout in the movie, along with Leslie Jones being Leslie Jones. I love McKinnon, and she didn't disappoint. She actually felt like she was playing a character, and having a great time doing it. Jones is great as well, and I'm also a big fan of her in SNL, but there isn't enough of her in the movie. I enjoy that once she joins the team, she is a part of it more than Winston ever was, so that's nice.

The other issue I had was it not taking place in the same universe. I feel like they could have told this same story and still have it tie into the first two movies. Nothing was really gained by setting it in a separate universe. They easily could have rolled with a "paranormal activity hasn't been seen in over 20 years, and the Ghostbusters have gone their separate ways. Now, new ghosts are popping up over New York, and four people will band together to face the threat."

The main antagonist wasn't fleshed out enough for my liking. It's one thing to have something like Gozer or Zuul, who are enacting a plan because they're evil, but when the villain is a human, you need to anchor his motivations better. Whenever his scenes cropped up, the movie kind of slowed down. It wasn't a boring movie, but he just wasn't a compelling antagonist. I also wish there was more of a montage of the Ghostbusters doing some busting after their initial victory. I'm sure some would have complained that that aped the original too much, but I don't care. I love my Ghostbusters montages.

As for the good stuff, the humor was good. I laughed during a large amount of it, and even had a few genuine laugh out loud moments as well. The trailers didn't do the movie any favors as far as comedy is concerned.

Chris Hemsworth's character is one note, but he plays buffoon so well. I don't think me or the audience didn't laugh when he was on the screen. My only hope is that if a sequel gets made, they flesh him out some more. As mentioned before, Jones and McKinnon are standouts in the film, and they are definitely the funniest of the Ghostbusters. McKinnon is a lot of fun, and batshit insane.

I also like that they didn't just copy paste the archetypes of the original Ghostbusters on these new characters. They all feel like original, new characters, even Wiig and McCarthy, even if I wished they had done more to make the two more distinct. I also thought the cameos were fun. Nothing offensive about seeing those guys show up here and there in the movie. I'd have preferred to have them be their characters had this been in the same universe, but I still enjoyed seeing them again.

The music was also rather nice. I don't know, something about that Ghostbusters theme always puts a smile on my face, and that happened every time it popped up in the movie to accentuate the action.

The visual effects were great. We saw it in 2D, since my wife wears glasses, and 3D always bugs her. I loved the look of the ghosts. It definitely felt like something out of The Real Ghostbusters. The vibrant colors also gave the movie an identity of its own, despite being Ghostbusters. I just really loved the look of the movie.

Ultimately, this was a fun, harmless movie with some good humor, entertaining characters, and pretty special effects. It's not Ghostbusters 1, and I still like Ghostbusters 2 more (I have an unhealthy love for Ghostbusters 2, honestly. Blame Janosz), but it's a worthy Ghostbusters movie. I will probably actually own this on Blu Ray.

When I write reviews, I usually don't give scores. I go by a "Buy," "Rent," and "Pass," scale. I'd give this a "Buy," especially if you're a Ghostbusters fan. If you're not a Ghostbusters fan, and don't have much attachment to the franchise, still "Buy." It's a good time.

Yup, I also liked Dan Akroyd saying "I aint afraid of no ghosts"

I also had no idea there were going to be so many cameos in this movie, and I loved each and every one. The best was Harold Remis' cameo
as a bust in the hall at the university

Can't really believe so many people are skipping this movie, because it feels like something that goes out of its way to please fans. As far as I'm concerned, Ghostbusters is a perfect franchise, not a bad major entry in the entire series. Ghostbusters 1 is great, Ghostbusters 2 is great, The Real Ghostbusters is great, Ghostbusters: The Video game is great, and Ghostbusters 2016 is great.

I wanna go see the movie again.
