Not that GAF doesn't know already but that entire game is magic. Resolution aside that game still holds up today.
I just got a cart of it yesterday. Seems alright so far. Haven't played it since back in the day.

Any games that use fancy chips ain't count. (Is this all that the m2 chip was used for?)

So Yoshi's Island doesn't count either, then? And neither does Stunt Race FX? And neither would Mario Kart, Pilotwings, Super Mario RPG, and the dozens of other SNES games with special chips? Come on. 16-bit is 16-bit.

Yeah, those nice extra chips helped us play some impressive games on our 16 bitters, let's not exclude them.

This thread wasn't really specificly about pushing vanilla hardware, so there's no need to disparage games with hardware enhancements.

Tales of Phantasia is probably the best looking RPG in the 16 bit era. Shadows cast over the environment as well as light sources creating shadows on characters with water having reflections and effects.

So many great examples in this tread. Yoshi's Island is definitely at the top of my list.

Once polygons came into the picture I feel like a lot of the magic went away.

I can stare at some of those GIFs all day.

Here's one from Probotector (aka Contra: Hard Corps) that simultaneously looks awesome and hilarious:

Haha, walkin' into the club like...

I loved this effect in the Terranigma underworld as a kid, thought it looked so unique and otherworldly.

Ah, i remember loving this particular effect.

Everytime the parrot changed direction the screen would flash as the flashlight was momentarily in your face.

I remember hearing that they removed this flash effect in the VC version or something?

I remamber I used to try to pause the game at the right moment of the flash so the screen was all white lol
