DOOM |OT| Rip and tear, until it's done

Is there a way to disable mouse acceleration and that weird weapon slowdown you get when firing guns in secondary fire mode (also the plasma rifle seem to have a slower turn rate while firing). It's really annoying.

Yeah, I knew that with the first two, but I mistook the last screen for a later mission.

I'm guessing they're screenshots they took from an earlier build. It's interesting they were still finalizing the enemy arrangements at that point.

It's also hard to picture Cyberdemon as just a regular enemy. I wonder if he had less moves at one point.
They have a mob ai varient of the cyberdemon in the game already. It's featured in the Tower of Babel Doom 1 level.

I think it's cool that MachineGames turned the shifty-eyed blonde guy from Wolfenstein 3D into a relatable and memorable character with real emotions, but I think it's also cool that iD went the John Carmack "video game stories are like porn" approach and just made a really kickass, balls-to-the-wall straight up shooter.

I think it's a cool time to be an FPS fan, especially one with nostalgia for both franchises. Wolf3D was my first FPS, DOOM was my second. Here I am in 2016 celebrating the revivals of both franchises one right after the other and I think that's just fucking awesome.

What impresses me most about Wolfenstein is how they turned it into a character study of a character that probably didn't even deserve one. BJ went 22 years as one of the most generic protagonists in games (look at Raven's depiction of him in 2009's Wolfenstein for an especially generic representation) and MachineGames said "I think we can do something more with this", and they did it. I respect the hell out of that.

My man. There is literally no better way to say it.

Cross posting from the other thread:

I'm making a DOOM X Dark Souls Snapmap! Sadly because of time restraints I dont have a lot of time to make this and so havent been able to test much! If you'd all be so kind as to help me test my Doom Souls map, that would be wonderful.

WCBQVE6U - snapmap tag

Doom Souls TEST - snapmap name

LD LINK 15 - author

Its very unfinished and lacks polish. There is very little balancing done. The main thing im currently concerned about is the concepts. Do they work? Does it feel Dark Souls-y? Of my current set up / encounters whats too hard and whats too easy? Whats broken?

Please play and let me know! If it goes well I will make more! Sadly the level editor is fairly limited so it is going to be a very small map. Its about 60% complete.

Ask any questions please! Oh and all 5 stats can be leveled 5 times each except ammo cap, only once. level exchange values for each are lvl 1-200, 2-500, 3-900, 4-1400, 5-2000. Stuff like the 5 munitions boxes are temporary. And yea, have fun!

So the DOOM and DOOM II codes were only for if you pre-ordered? Was wondering why I never got them.

Can you earn runes by playing the rune challenges from the main menu? In other words, if I find a rune challenge in a level but I want to try it later, can I just activate the rune challenge and then access it later from the main menu and earn the rune that way?

EDIT: Just got the rune. Still wondering about the above for future reference, though.

Favorite surprise of the year so far. Platinumed it. Original Doom was old by the time I got around to it, Doom 3 I never played and thought Rage and Wolfenstein: TNO were just ok. They nailed this one, though and glad I got to play it.

ugh those shield bastards are the worst

On nightmare every time I see them pop up in a big mob I just fire the BFG. They can kill you in like 2 shots at full health no matter what, and if you've taken damage it's a good chance they're going to one shot you.

Probably my most hated enemy in the game >.>

Yeah, they seriously tear you to shreds. They were my archnemesis the entire playthrough which is funny because one paper they don't seem like much.

Rockets are really good against them atleast.

I think you can touch it then back out, yeah. If you actually play the rune you actually leave the level and go back to the menu on a replay.

I just use frag grenades on them. They go splat behind their shields.

Just noticed the GAF shoutout on the Snapmap menu. Am I late to this or did they update the menu recently to switch out the tiles?

I teach game design, and I asked my students a week ago if anyone was excited for DOOM. It was met with a collective shrug, and noone was interested.

I followed up this week, after playing it all weekend long, and did my best effort at selling them the game by showing the nvidia footage at the start of class. I was met with students saying "nah my mates said it was shit". I asked if their mates had played it, and they said no. They then just talked about the overwatch beta for 10 mins.

I think I now understand why the industry is in the state that it is. Oh well. I tried.

I'm absolutely loving DOOM btw. It's weirdly scratching a metroid prime itch for me. I love exploring the maps.
I've wanted the game because I've played and liked Doom 3. Got the Doom 3:BFG Edition back on PS3 and loved playing the game at 60fps. This new Doom game Nvidia video and the response from people here for the game sealed the deal. Ordered it for PS4, it should get here later today.

I can't wait to dig into the game. I'm so happy the game seems to be doing well.

After getting the double jump I just jump over them and kill them with the super shotgun.

Buut I was playing on UV, so I don't know how much harder they're in nightmare.

It's scratching a Metroid Prime itch for me, too, and I'm not sure why. They're obviously very different games, but they're... similarly satisfying? It's hard to explain. DOOM really makes me want another Metroid Prime, though.

Also, that's a bummer your class doesn't see the light. But perhaps in time!

This makes the third time I've heard someone compare the game to Metroid Prime. Is it because the fighting is maybe more about dodging and strafing (something that MP has but obviously at a slower pace) than pure precision? Is it the apparently large levels? The upgrades? The double jump (without wallrunning to go on the Titanfall bandwagon)? I'm genuinely curious, because I can't obviously see the similarities. I'd be very glad to be reminded of MP when I get around to it, but I can't imagine how they are similar very well at all so far. Any further details would be appreciated.

I want a good new Metroid... Nintendo.. <:|

If you have the rocket detonation upgrade you can fire past them and detonate just after.

Got the final double shotgun upgrade after replaying some levels, glad I didn't get it before I finished the game, it trivialises everything.

I have tried and tried to end up in a situation where I could cave in and buy this game, but I can't find it from anywhere! (It's a small town.)

Digital price is awful, too. (PS4)

Finished it today on Ultra Violence and it was incredible. The amount of care put into each level is amazing, the use the of vertical space is so satisfying. I can't believe just a week ago I never would've believed someone saying this would be one of the best fps campaigns of all time but it definitely is. Any discussion would have to include this game. It amazes me that Bethesda didn't seem to know what they had beforehand, or at least didn't know how to communicate that to the rest of us. Still id has done amazing work both technically crafting satisfying and enjoyable gameplay. When I bought my copy after reading impressions I still didn't really believe it but this game was incredible start to finish. id did a great job.

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
The maps do have a Metroidish feel in exploration, and they even play with the 3D space. I found a hidden item in tge 4th(?) mission that maxed out my health and armor. So I can focus upgrades on ammo now.

As much as I love Metroid, particularly Prime, I think the exploration aspect of this game was innovated by id in Doom, and Wolfenstein 3D, and etc. etc.

Ultra-Violence feels like the way to play it for me. There's a tension to every encounter that makes it all the more satisfying when I prevail. Like Hotline Miami, careful planning seems to have a lower success rate than a mad, adrenaline-fuelled frenzy.

Dont laugh but its what ive been using since my desktop PC imploded a couple years ago

but its a HP 2000 notebook PC
4 GB

ones some games surprisingly decently in which they dont look bad

That sadly is not very descriptive of what it may be internally (processor and the graphics chip). Do you per chance know what they are?

4GB of system RAM may be too little for this game to run well honestly.

Since this is a id software game it should run good on relatively old hardware, correct?

Nah not really, the game is very optimized once you past a certain threshhold, but if you are below that, it is simply impossible to get 60fps if that's what you want, no matter what settings you take.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own

AMD E2-1800 APU with Radeon HD graphics 1.20 GHz and its a 64 bit operating system with a x64 based processor if that helps

rage seemed to run very well on it(minus the texture popin everywhere)

Rage is a quite a bit older and was designed to run on the last consoles. So its performance has less of a bearing on something like Doom.
I think the bigger problem for that computer, beyond the GPU and RAM, would be the fact that is a very low clocked dual core processor. Does anyone know if this game even boots with two cores? A lot of modern games do not run / or even boot on two cores sadly. And even if it did, that is a very underclocked low IPC dual core in the first place. I do not think the lowest settings @ 30fps would be even doable.
