Canadian Gaming "Deals" and Discussion Thread 6: Sorry, We Can't Afford a New Thread

If anything, this survey will be used to funnel data to the big 3 on how they can gouge us further.
We will always be behind the rest of the civilized world when it comes to Internet affordability and accessibility.

I thought the Big 3 runs the CRTC?

I mean, from a technical stand point, they don't, but I'm the impression that it practically serves the big three more than anyone else.

Hoping Bloodborne goes on sale again soon (so I can afford the DLC for it at the same time) but with the dollar here crapping out.. am I better off just buying it for $40 before they pull a dick move and make me pay more?

Would you guys suggest I buy Splatoon now at 69.99. Could Nintendo raise prices up to 79.99 in the next month or so?
I suggest you look at kijiji and craigslist instead. I've seen people selling the game for as low as 50. Like you're not really getting anything out of buying it new, Club Nintendo is dead and new box smell is not real.

Amazon price matched or beat most sales. With prime it all arrived the next week, no malls, no lines, no hassle. Hell even my grandparents are buying stuff online now. Bestbuy had better get their online store from a crash prone bucket of shit to something easy to use.
Their website issues probably cost them a ton of cash.

You'd think the issue of "not being able to add stuff to your shopping cart" would cause some red flags to fly, but not for them!

Oh. I'm quite aware of this Spigen cases. This is what I planned to get at first but just went to a generic one at mall (big mistake for paying $10 for it lol). That's why I'm just tempted with the knockoff apple cases since it is cheap. Also, you don't use a screen protector, how's your phone? Any scratches?
I say don't make the same mistake twice and just go with the Spigen :P I don't have scratches on the screen. Ever since companies started using gorilla glass I don't think that screen protectors are really needed. Haven't used one since my original iPhone 3G.

Damn. Must've been me price-protecting all those clearance games.

But seriously, I hope Best Buy pulls through all this. If they're gone, it'll just be Amazon. No way am I shopping at EB.

Was a very noticeable drop in holiday foot traffic in my local BB stores. Not even the good weather could help things. I just assume people were shopping on their website...

Simple market forces too. Dollar store sells cables. Music streaming has really taken off. $70 cell plans and no off-contract options means less consumer $. Accessories are super cheap online or at your local strip plaza gift shop. Nobody upgrades their TV anymore. Other extended warranty options exist. On and on and on...

It's actually "just" $30 on Amazon right now:
http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00KVT3H7S/

Hard to predict when/if it will go lower considering the dollar.

Figures. I've been hitting up various stores, especially amazon.ca, every day hoping Bloodborne would go on sale again since Black Friday. Second I post something it's on sale somewhere hours after I check.. lol

Was hoping for $20 again but $30 works out fine too. With DLC that's about how much it'll cost for the digital complete edition.

NOW I just need to get my hands on a credit card but it's 1:30 AM.

There's going to be less traffic in Bestbuy now too with what little they actually have on the shelf now. It feels so much emptier now... Like I know they're doing it because they end up being a showroom while people buy online, but some people also do impulse buys when they see an item on the shelf....

Best Buy Canada Sees Massive Drop In Holiday Earnings

http://m.huffpost.com/ca/entry/8991716?

Best Buy is predicting a 30-per-cent drop in its Canadian sales for this quarter, following a disappointing holiday sales season that analysts blame on online sales and a lack of exciting new gadgets.

Uhhhhh the dollar is a way more significant factor here. There's multiple AAA games that I'd have bought day one were it not for the fact that they're $79.99.

I hope Best Buy and McDonald's will pull through. I don't eat at Rotten Ronnie's often, but do like it from time to time. Their fries are iconic.

If Best Buy does leave Canada, I hope there's good warning, because I have credit I want to use on a new TV. But I'm not in a rush.

As much as I don't like Best Buy's dominance in the market, I feel like Best Buy leaving Canada would be a disaster for retail electronics. Who'd be left at that point? Walmart and who else? Costco, sort of. Amazon, sort of. Everyone else is regional (Visions, Canada Computers, London Drugs, etc.) or small fry/sadsack (The Source, Staples).

I legitimately was going to buy something on Amazon instead because of this, but toughed it out for RZ points.

if Best Buy left Canada I'd be completely screwed. I lack a credit card so shopping via amazon.ca is a pain in the ass. Having to ask people to borrow a credit card so I can buy stuff really sucks.

CIBC definitely does as well, I have one.

Never used it as a Visa card online, though - easier to just use credit cards for the rewards. Costco's is probably the best all around at the moment in terms of cash back.

With the option for no annual fee, cashback, rewards, and zero liability, there really is no reason not to have at least one credit card. Plus it builds credit, which is important when you have to make bigger purchases in life.

Visa Debit guys. Works on Amazon.

Doesn't work on Best Buy, hilariously enough.

I had a bit of a debacle with my Rock Band 4 bundle pre-order when my card was used fraudulently since I couldn't replace it with a debit card and I only had the one CC. Was a big mess trying to get a ringer to use their CC for me, heh.

Seriously. Get a credit card. Use it like a normal goddamn person. It is only a positive unless you somehow think a credit card means you have extra money.

I'm more worried about jobs, in Ontario the manufacturing sector is dead so retail is basically all that's left and if that goes what the hell do they expect people to do exactly?

It's going to be either blue collar jobs, service jobs, or jobs that are part of the "information economy" I assume.

Manufacturing in Ontario has basically been dead for a decade. The fact that the CAW/NDP are pretty much dead here is a sign of that.

Does anyone know ebgames policy for pre-order pricing guarantee? Right now they have the lowest price for Arslan: The Warriors of Legend (PS4) for $69.99, bestbuy and amazon have it for 84.99. I'm afraid if I preorder it ebgames might jack the price up and it'll affect the preorder price.

I don't think there's any sort of guarantee unless you know the manager and he does you a favour. They'll ask for extra money when you pick it up.

If you do it online, I believe you're good.

Yeah, I'm just hoping I can get the two disc before its too late

I just got back from TRU - was able to get the two disc of Bayonetta for the 64.99 full price...but at least I got it. To find this, I think I visited three Wal-Marts, four Shoppers and two EB games (I would have even settled for a used copy at this point).

I left a copy on the shelf in Appleby Burlington TRU in case anyone from here wants to pick one up. Should still be there.

Really happy I have both of these on disc. Shame Nintendo doesn't want to re-release it in its full form. The Wii U...damn.

As someone who has worked in the finance industry, having and maintaining a credit card is the BEST thing to build, establish, and maintain your credit. As stated above, use it responsibly and pay it off every month so you're not paying insane interest rates. If you're worried about overspending, just ask for a very low credit limit (ie $250-$500).

I have been meaning to for years, no word of a lie. I just haven't done so, and want to wait until I have a stable income.

A parent offered to co-sign, though, and I need to get on it before I'm thirty. I have no credit right now.

Just go right now. Like, this weekend. No need to keep waiting

A lot of the no fee credit cards can be approved with little to no income without a co-signer, especially if you have a long relationship with a said financial institution.

It's worthwhile to have even at this point without income. Just refrain from using it if you're scared of not being able to pay it off. It's better to use it slightly every month to ensure credit activity, but not using it and creating a history with credit is still beneficial. I've seen people even just apply for the credit card, get approved, and then cut the bastard up to ensure they don't use it.

The big thing is that when you're nearing that 30 mark and say you want to make a big purchase (car, mortgage, etc.) and they try to pull your credit history and all they see is an address and no credit score, it's very difficult to move forward.

I'm kind of just rambling at this point, just know that the pros tend to outweigh the cons with a credit card when used in the right way. Credit cards are still terrifying because they can trap people in with those atrocious interest rates, but it's the best stepping stone to build ones credit when approached correctly.
