Canadian Gaming "Deals" and Discussion Thread 6: Sorry, We Can't Afford a New Thread

Yeah wait three years and buy a 4K tv that's twice as good for half the price. This is still early adopter territory.

That's 3 fewer years of 4K NHL and Jays games though

I'm pretty tempted to get one of the $1000 4KTVs on sale this week but the issue for me is more that I'm gonna have to buy a new AV Receiver, and lease a new cable box, not to mention the cost of the 4K cable package itself

so many hidden costs aside from the TV which I don't really think we can afford right now

Can anyone recommend me a good external HDD for Wii U that's currently on special? I'm out of town on business and can't spend too long researching.

I was really close to thinking about buying Mad Max on PS4/XBOne from BB, but then I noticed that it's $20 on a not-daily deal on Steam right now. Huh, I can't believe I missed it somehow.

Most people recommend Seagate drives cause they drop in price quite a lot and offer a great amount of space. I'd still say if possible go with Western Digital because their drives (internal and external) tend to be a lot more reliable.

This WD My Passport one is $100 and is 2TB, there's a $69.99 1TB one as well. http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00W8XXYSM/

No, people recommend Seagate external drives because they aren't soldered to the connector and can be used inside a computer or console. Also the controller doesn't encrypt the data which means you can take it out and place it in an array for example (wheras the WD your data is lost if anything happens to the enclosure).

Would any Seagate or Wstern Digital drive work though ?

Hey vancouver people is 24 coke for 6 considered cheap?

Your profile pic is extreme relevant to this question I'm sorry I couldn't resist.

It seems pretty inline with superstore's offerings on dozen packs for around $3, but I haven't shopped for sodas for a long time and I don't know if our shitty dollar affected the prices in anyway.

Quick HDD primer for upgraders

PS4: Up to 2TB+, internal 2.5" drives only (9.5mm or thinner)
Recommended: Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB
Sony lets you upgrade the internal drive easily, without killing your warranty, but doesn't allow external drives to install games. The Backup Plus Slim may be an external drive, but there are easy youtube videos out there detailing how to crack it out of its case (easy, I did it) and get it working on your PS4. It's also really cheap, as low as $80-$90 in seasonal sales, and inexplicably cheaper than the internal laptop version you'd see on NCIX/Newegg.

PS3: Up to 1TB, internal 2.5" drives only (9.5mm or thinner)
Recommended: Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1TB
Same idea. Spinpoint was what used to be recommended for PS3, and that division was bought by Seagate and put into these very drives. (I've heard 1.5TB also works for PS3, and some people have 2TB working, but 1TB seems to be the "no nonsense" limit right now. YMMV.)

Wii U: Up to 2TB, external only
Recommended: WD MyBook 2TB
Wii U only has flash memory it in (no HDD) so you have to go external here. The USB ports may not supply enough power for any small HDD to work so I really recommend you go with a cheap WD MyBook - these are vaguely book-like black enclosures with 3.5" drives that come with their own AC adapter to supply power.

XBOX ONE: 5TB+, external only
Recommended: WD MyBook 4TB
The One has a special USB port on the side of the system for plugging in external drives, and almost anything will work so long as it's USB3. Since the limit is huge I would recommend a MyBook but really any 4TB external is going to work (and AFAIK every 4TB external today is 3.5", which means a power brick is coming with it...) You could go small, with a 1TB or whatever. There are some specially branded mini drives for XBox One. But going big at this form factor is pretty cheap.

Nice guide! One thing worth mentioning: the PS4 (and I think the PS3) only take drives with a height of 9.5mm or less. Many of the larger drives (including all non-Seagate/Samsung 2TB drives) are 15mm and won't fit properly in a PS4.

Updated. Realistically speaking the only ones thicker than that are old or not suited for laptops, but it was worth noting as you said :)

Having a bestbuy.ca problem where it won't let me remove items from my cart. Every time I change the quantity it goes to the "cart empty" page, but when I click back to my cart everything is still in there.

EDIT: Had to do everything while logged out so it wouldn't use my cart state, re-enter my rewardzone ID since I was logged out, then log in after checkout to add the order to my account. What a dumb thing.

Nope, it was $80, it was a flash sale for the red one only. It said something like 80% claimed or something.

All the colours were on sale, I believe (at least black was, too), but red was the last one available. I was waffling for a while on that deal and wound up with a red one because all the other available colours went off sale.

That was really weird to me, because when I bought my two drives it was the red one that was closest to being sold out, at 60-something percent claimed versus 0-15 for the other colours. Someone clearly led a counter-red revolution!

(oh, except silver, which was already sold out, so I guess less weird)

Dude the lines are long everywhere. I was going to Zara and EB Games in the Eaton Centre in Toronto, saw the long as hell lines, and then noped the fuck on out of there. I think Best Buy is pretty bad as well. It's just strange to me because there aren't really any stand out deals from either EB or BB. But then again, people here in Toronto love their stupid queues.

It is truly amazing how few people shop online. So many are fine doing micro transactions on cell phones, driving across town for Kijiji deals or even buy random clothes (clothes!?!) from shady spam-like email ads (eg the CG unauthorized sites), but have no idea Amazon, Costco.ca or any electronics online store exists for day-to-day purchases.

More stock for the rest of us I suppose.

Anyone know how long Canada Post lets packages sit in your superbox package box before they get taken out? I might be out of the country when my Fire Emblem Fates SE ships. If they leave it for a few days it might be OK, if not probably a hassle.

You can setup "hold mail" with CP for a small fee and then pick up your mail and packages when you return from vacation.

I have a 2TB Seagate HD in my PS4. It was super easy to install.

When it comes to removing the plastic casing, I found that putting a credit card in the crack and working it along the side worked great. I have the PS4 500 GB HDD in the case and I use it to back up computer stuff. Super easy.

Is SSD worth it for PS3 or no?

I never upgrade my 120GB one, and it's kind of annoying. I might still use the PS3 for a few more years...

Not at all. I had a 500gb Evo in my PS4 and aside from slightly quicker load times there were no performance games vs the stock dive. Ps4 only has SATA II

I ended up selling it and putting the stock drive back in

Might be an odd question to ask here but have there been any notable sales on Anime DVD's and BD's? Some shows I'm looking for include Dragon Ball Z Kai, Studio Ghibli flims, Lupin the 3rd titles, and Tiger & Bunny: The Rising.

Studio Ghibli blu-rays have dropped in price on Amazon.ca over the last couple weeks. Some of the older ones are at $15.99 (the lowest I've EVER seen them at). A few others are at $19.99 which is still a decent price. You're probably not going to see any of the newest releases (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso) below $24 for a while.

Cool, thanks. I won't bother then, I don't see any point in swapping the drive for my PS3 at this point. If I upgrade my PS4 I'll put that drive into PS3 maybe.

On another note, I got a buyer for my OG Vita already. It's craigslist so I expect flaking lol.

Anyone know EB's policy on hardware exchange? Once that dude buys my OG Vita I will open up my Blue Slim Vita, worried about dead pixels.

Other than Ghibli, your best bet is going to be the Rightstuf sale. Although the USD and the 250 minimum for free shipping is probably going to kill that unless you have a lot to buy.

I got a Best Buy gift card for Christmas. Think I can apply that to my Black Friday order?

I only ever ordered from Rightstuf once and I got destroyed by Customs :(

The weak dollar has totally killed any savings for me from that. I'm so disappointed, I usually buy from them always at the end of the year

Thanks, I'll look into this.

Probably not for throughput but random IO reads are way faster on an SSD so you'd definitely see some performance improvements.

Another thing to consider is longevity. That hard drive is a ticking time bomb if you want to keep your PS3 working for another 20 years. If you have digital games you want to keep going forever it would be worth swapping in an SSD at some point, but maybe when they're even cheaper than now.

Wow. Amazon just shipped the Sennheiser HD 598. That was quick. Thought I would have a few more days to think about following through. On another note. The Bayonetta 2 that I managed to get them to honor the half price sale on, is expected to be shipped Jan 22nd.

I asked them to cancel my order for the 598s. It's just not worth spending $150 on headphones for me lol. If they ship it....I might keep it...damn it Amazon....

Also, TRENDNet Power line adapters are $25 on Amazon. I just bought a kit.

Yeah I'm actually going through video reviews for them right now. If it arrives, and I've changed my mind, I'll just refuse delivery.

Question for those who own the 598's

Is the cable swappable? I see that it can be disconnected. But it almost seems to be a proprietary end with the plug needing to be twisted in after inserted.

I haven't had anytime to look at any deals. Not even the online console deals. Guess I'll will look at rfd when I'm eating dinner at the in-laws tonight.

It is truly amazing how few people shop online.

I was up on Saturday morning and ready to go to the mall when I realized I don't need this right this second, and the lines aren't worth it. So Mad Max and a DS4 from amazon for the same sale price and I'll get it in a week or so.

It's a 2.5 to 3.5mm cable and has a little locking mechanism. Replacement cables seem pretty easy to find online though.

So I've put off getting Dragon Age GOTY. I beat and platinumed the game, really enjoying it about a year ago. I sold the game after I was finished with it and thought about buying it again when all the DLC was available.

Is the DLC worth 24 bucks? How much content do all 3 provide?

Do they have to come straight from Sennheiser? It's that locking mechanism that has me concerned.
I think it used to be that you could only get them from Sennheiser, but now there are a bunch of 3rd party ones. Can't comment on their quality though because I've only used the stock cable.

The 598's are fantastic. Never thought I'd love higher end headphones this much but they changed everything for me. I got them last year and I'll never be able to go back to a standard gaming set. It's like wearing clouds and the sound is stellar. Could have a little more bass but its fine, I just use a DAC/Amp with bass adjust for certain tracks. You really do hear things you didn't before. Use them for a few months and then try using a "regular" set. Nope.

Now I want to go higher end. I have a feeling this is going to become an expensive hobby.

Yeah doing some more reading. It seems the offficial replacement from Sennheiser only ships to a US address. But yes I see now that there are options from 3rd party companies on amazon. That $23 price tag though..

The M50x was apparently also available yesterday during a lightning sale for $169. Missed that, but there was a waiting list (?) you could add yourself to. Did that, but have no idea what that means. I'll have to chat it up with amazon and see what that's about.

When the dollar was close, it was still cheaper than paying retail prices for anime. That and a lot of stuff like Aniplex box sets are still only available from them anyway (want to buy Madoka Magica in Canada? Good luck.)

They actually pre-clear taxes now and ship via FedEx (which is annoying, but a whole different story).

The weak dollar has totally killed any savings for me from that. I'm so disappointed, I usually buy from them always at the end of the year
Yeah, it's too bad. It's more for sets that you can only get from them... but I don't really find myself buying anime anymore. There's just nothing I really want nowadays.

It's a post from August, and it was never real. O.o

That sucks then.

I believe I've seen the first post updated with new deals before, so I thought that was one of them.

Searching online, there seems to have been a few examples of Bloodborne hitting $19.99. I wonder if we'll see it get that low again sometime soon, wouldn't mind giving it a try.

What he said ^. I got in on that deal. My game is resting nicely in it's plastic prison.
