Canadian Gaming "Deals" and Discussion Thread 6: Sorry, We Can't Afford a New Thread

Just tried to buy an Elite Controller on Best Buy's site, but the site was so glitchy that I couldn't checkout. Now it's sold out.

It's been such a pain to even get them. Honestly I'm just gonna hope they're still sending out shipments of them around next Spring when I actually have more disposable income. I hope at least by then all the other crazy people who want it will have already gotten one somehow.

Thanks for the advice guys! I contacted another CSR and they adjusted it to $32 :)

I have no guarantee I'll get a new, proper replacement, so I figured I'd spend my Christmas money on one. There were 7 in stock, then 4, but I could never get past the first shipping field. That was the furthest I got, as before I'd gotten errors.

Guess there is noone in CDN Retail that knows if Bloodborne is ever gonna go on sale again, huh?

Really pissed off at myself at this point.

Doesn't look like it dropped back to the $20 Black Friday price.

If you don't mind digital the Complete Edition is $50 on PSN, Old Hunters DLC by itself is $20 + you'll save tax on top.

The good thing about 4K: the Blu-ray Association has an official standard for 4K/UHD content, television manufacturers like Sony and Samsung have begun updating their 2015 TV models to meet this standard, and UHD Blu-ray players and discs are coming next year.

The bad thing about 4K: as Stan_Marsh said, streaming is going to be a problem. While TV sets are being updated to support HDCP 2.2 (necessary for streaming), from what I understand you need at least 25Mbps download speed to take advantage of it (in regards to Netflix). Internet prices and data caps are going to prove problematic. And as has been said already, you're still in early adopter territory. The standard likely won't change, but the selection of UHD Blu-ray is going to be limited at first - and we still don't know what the price of UHD players is going to be.

Indeed, the funny thing is HDR isn't even in these future proofing discussions.

Most of Sony and Samsung's 2015 line up has been updated to support HDMI 2.0a and HDR.

Not much for me today on deals and probably bad deals for others. Nba2k16 for Xbox one for 40 bucks, Logitech smart home hub for 80 (best buy gift card). Soon buying halo 5 on the Xbox marketplace for 60 but using a 25.00 gift card as part of my xmas present.

EDIT: bought Halo 5. only paid 37 bucks extra after the gift card used.

Internet speed has been garbage lately so digital is not ideal. 5GB took me long enough, imagine 20+ GB and then all the patches/DLC. Probably be a day and a half. (I swear my ISP started throttling me or something.)

Was hoping to get it + the DLC for $45, but I missed out on the deals like a moron.

How does that work? I get the sale price, but wait until it's in stock for it to be shipped out? Can be cancelled at any time before shipment and returned for free?
Pretty much, yeah.

A word or warning though, if you do change your mind, try to cancel before they ship it, because they may or may not charge you for return shipping. Usually not, but occasionally.

Well I pre-ordered the Fire Emblem Art book from Indigo using VISA Checkout.

I'm just hoping I get a lucky price drop from Amazon because I don't wanna pay $40 if I can avoid it... but I will if I have to

Anyone know how long Canada Post lets packages sit in your superbox package box before they get taken out? I might be out of the country when my Fire Emblem Fates SE ships. If they leave it for a few days it might be OK, if not probably a hassle.

Never had Canada post leave packages in mailbox now. Always get a card to pick it up at the nearest Canada post office or whatever they are called at guardian drugs.

Ask them.

I preordered the artbook because I'm super bitter I missed the Fates LE. It's not the same game but eh.

What's a good deal on a hard drive that would work well to upgrade an old 20-gig PS3?

These should work.

2 TB, $90: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product...spx?path=ca5594b08401f401d7c878bc19a1df42en02

1.5 TB, $80: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product...spx?path=62e237790022b76517f86bbeeb86dcbfen02

Cheaper on Amazon too right now for a 2 TB @ $80, if you don't mind the red case, which you shouldn't since you need to take the hard drive out anyways. See my post a few pages back with a video on how to keep the case to make an external:

Amazon US got a price drop so fingers crossed!

Any of these should work. I haven't seen any specific deals for 2.5" drives besides externals, which at a minimum would require you to tear them apart (thus voiding warranty). 1TB externals seem to be about $70 anyways so you wouldn't save much over an internal, which would still have a valid warranty after you put it in your PS3.

Did you make amistake or was it really 80$?

ffs i paid $110 for that first drive on christmas eve

Dude the lines are long everywhere. I was going to Zara and EB Games in the Eaton Centre in Toronto, saw the long as hell lines, and then noped the fuck on out of there. I think Best Buy is pretty bad as well. It's just strange to me because there aren't really any stand out deals from either EB or BB. But then again, people here in Toronto love their stupid queues.

I think people just have a quasi-tradition now: the day after Christmas, people go hang out at the mall/stand in line at a big box store/etc. I still have a Boxing Day tradition: have brunch with friends, then hit some record stores. Though part of that might end this year because dear lord record stores that don't specialize in vinyl are dismal places now. They may as well be mausoleums.

Always ridiculous. It was like that on Black Friday at Metrotown too. Thankfully I stopped by earlier at a less busy location for The Order.

I remember years ago I chatted a guy who was waiting in the metro eb line during boxing day and the moment he walked in he asked an associate about the game he wanted and the associate shot him down. I felt so bad for that guy and his look was just like o.O

Got email from PayPal saying my best buy transaction didn't go through. Can't even remember what the order or item was. I'll just wait for BB to email me.

So happy that I got Divinity PS4 for $30. Totally missed out on Dark Souls II PS4 for $24.99 though... Anybody seen any copies of that anywhere still?

I'm glad there was nothing I wanted enough to venture out into stores today. A couple online purchases yesterday and the day before and I'm good. Now back to waiting on Canada Post.

Can you use a 2TB in a PS3? I thought there was a limit of 1TB for file format.

Actually yeah I'm pretty sure the hanging out thing is definitely what most people do. I used to do it with friends when I was in high school. Nowadays I go with my Mom because she's so busy at work she can never shop for a long period of time. Most of the people in stores were just wandering around, looking at stuff, especially in some of the bigger more expensive brand stores (Banana Republic, TNA, sometimes the Bay). My Mom bought an expensive as fuck jacket from TNA, store was relatively packed, no one was at the cashier buying anything.

The other side of this is basically what Zara and H&M were at, with fucking lines left and right because there are so many people inside.

Just got back from doing some boxing day shopping with a friend. I didn't plan on getting anything, but I ended up grabbing the Razer Blackwidow Ultimate for $100 at London Drugs, which came with the Razer Forex mobile gaming speakers for free. Not sure how good the keyboard is, since it's my first gaming keyboard, but it seemed like a good deal to me.

Also picked up Game & Wario at Superstore for like $35. I've bee trying to find the game for a decent price for awhile, so it turned out to be a decent boxing day.

Definitely spent a lot less than previous boxing days, and didn't have to wake up nearly as early either.

Hey guys, what's the best Wii U / PS4 / Xbox One external drives I can get this week ? I'm assuming there's some good ones on sale. I'm just not familiar with the requirements for each consoles.

Thanks !

I was really close to thinking about buying Mad Max on PS4/XBOne from BB, but then I noticed that it's $20 on a not-daily deal on Steam right now. Huh, I can't believe I missed it somehow.

Most people recommend Seagate drives cause they drop in price quite a lot and offer a great amount of space. I'd still say if possible go with Western Digital because their drives (internal and external) tend to be a lot more reliable.

This WD My Passport one is $100 and is 2TB, there's a $69.99 1TB one as well. http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00W8XXYSM/

No, people recommend Seagate external drives because they aren't soldered to the connector and can be used inside a computer or console. Also the controller doesn't encrypt the data which means you can take it out and place it in an array for example (wheras the WD your data is lost if anything happens to the enclosure).

Yeah wait three years and buy a 4K tv that's twice as good for half the price. This is still early adopter territory.

Yup, with the level of technology change, there is really no reason to buy electronics thinking you're future proofing anything. By the time 4K will be meaningful, you can probably get a newer television for half the price.

Depends on what you can afford obviously and whether you're the kind to buy new sets every 3-4 years or only when something breaks, but it doesn't really make sense to splurge on a 4K set when it'll be at least another 2-3 years before mass adoption starts to happen.
