‘Yo-Kai Watch’ beats ‘Star Wars’ ticket sales in Japan

Get your priorities right, Japan. Does Yokai Watch have the glory that is Poe Dameron? DOES IT?!

I feel sorry for all the parents who had to see Yokai Watch instead of Star Wars because of their damn kids.

Can't find any ticket numbers sadly. Considering though how ticket prices have ballooned in most of developed countries with time my guess would be that the difference would be even bigger in terms of ticket sales. With todays exchange rate the dollar difference becomes a little smaller though. 17.55 million vs 13.3 million.

Edit. Found the admission numbers.

Admissions:
1.358 million for Revenge of the Sith
1.040 million for Force Awakens
Oooo. Interesting numbers! Thanks a lot!

So apparently tickets for the new Star Wars were more expensive than regular tickets, and there was a backlash online because of it and that is way the complaints against Disney,

So, you see, Yo-Kai is on top because they sold MORE tickets, while Star Wars did more money because the tickets are more expensive.

If The Room 2 and a new movie from back-from-the-dead Stanley Kubrick were released at the same time, would you also reserve judgement? Take out the hyperbole and it's the same situation here.

It's Star Wars, half of the movies in the franchise are bad to average, so yes, I will reserve judgement.

Kubrick being even remotely compared to TFA. The Yokai Watch flick being even remotely likened to a genuinely terrible movie.

I'd watch two movies before saying anyone seeing one over the other has shit taste.

It's not like The Force Awakens is a Mad Max Fury Road-style genre masterpiece. It's just a good movie. If Yokai Watch 2 is a good movie, than I can't fault people for watching it instead of The Force Awakens.

(But I can fault everyone who didn't watch Mad Max Fury Road, you tasteless fucks)

Would be nice if it stayed that way instead of transforming into six paragraphs vomiting out the entire plot of the movie.

Yeah but you know it'll get there. Six paragraphs would be a lot for TFA as the story is pretty straightforward.

What's weird is that I've read Yo-Kai Watch was already declining in Japan, yet there's news like this. No idea how this premiere compares to the first movie, though.
The first movie sold 1,484,916 tickets opening weekend. So yeah, decline in full effect.

The current plot summary for the Force Awakens page is six paragraphs. That's Wikipedia for you.

I don't understand how that mediocre pokemon rip-off sells so much. Seriously, wtf?

It's fun and charming

Also it's not really that similar to pokemon, outside of the fact that you catch/fight monsters (Yo-Kai Spirits in this case) everything else is quite different. Well for the games at least.

Yo-kai Watch's first movie ticket sales we're not normal for a regular movie opening weekend. It was kind of bound to decline, but it's still doing really well.

People are seriously arguing about Yo-Kai and Star Wars quality here? You're all man-childs.

This really continues to show that Japan does have that particular taste. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I'd love to judge for myself, if only the Yo-Kai Watch movies were available in English.

6 (4). "Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive: Chou Movie War Genesis"

But the truth is, I'm more excited for this than Star Wars and Yo-Kai Watch combined.

It's funny to me how different we are culturally. I dig the fact we are all different and every once in a while something brings everybody together and boom you have it.

But I have seen Star Wars and it's really good. It's action with a flare of nostalgia and some young promising talent plus Disneys money.

So this is comparing the ticket numbers for the 2nd and 3rd days of release for Star Wars, versus the 1st and 2nd days of release for Yokai Watch? That could possibly explain the difference. Although, you wouldn't expect that much of a drop off within 3 days for Star Wars.

Probably cheaper because no IMAX and 3D showing of Yokai. Also maybe early in the day ticket sales since kids are seeing it (I don't know if Japan does the whole cheaper tickets earlier in the day that the US does).

I think children's tickets are cheaper, but it's actually the opposite when it comes to matinee vs. late show prices. The late show tickets are always cheaper because you are basically sacrificing your ability to catch the last train home in most cases.

I gotta say, this just seems like a case of amazing PR spin. The headline seems to be coming from comparing the weekend sales, even though TFA opened on a Friday and was mostly sold out on that day. Hell, my company even told employees they could leave early to catch the showings if they needed to. Though this place is full of hardcore Star Wars fans so we are an obvious exception.

Still a valid comparison though as the metrics for measuring movies are always all over the place. I hate movie sales records and how they work in general. "RECORD BROKEN FOR THURSDAY AFTERNOON TICKET SALES IN ARGENTINA AMONG SENIOR CITIZENS!" etc
