Halo 5 Review Thread

It's hilarious to read how people are coping with the low review scores. The game does suck and HaloGaf's ego wont allow them to admit it.

Lol at this. Surely GAF is better than this no?

Are Halo's standards so high that an 85 metascore, dragged down by 4-5 mixed reviews is deemed a failure?

So I cut up my recording of the playthrough for my review, and these were my results:

Holy shit, with this info I'm surprised this score as much as it did.

Wait, there's only like 4-5 mixed reviews?

If that's true that's such a shame. It's why I hate metacritic.

this is dumb solely because halogaf and the fanbase in general has never been hesitant towards claiming that a halo game sucks

Seriously? This is still missing? How can you release a FPS and still not have this in 2015? The shooting mechnics for Halo games are stuck in 2005. Halo 4 was such a chore to play because of this.

This is a joke post right? RIGHT!?!?

I can't tell anymore... Halo threads are the best threads...

What did you call mixed reviews?

10 reviews > 90
5 reviews < 80
34 reviews between 80-90

Most reviews are in the 8x line... that is why the avg. is 85... if you remove the 4 best scores and 4 worst scores the avg. will continue to be near 85.

There is nothing wrong with Metacritic about that.

That DF foundry video was really interesting.

I did laugh at this quote at the end "343 has worked within the constraints of the hardware platform... blah blah".

Dat implication.

Semi off-topic: I dunno why but I feel 86 is significantly better than 85 for some reason.
Even numbers always look better imo

I cringed earlier when I heard someone called 85 a nice "even" #

I have this feeling ign is going to give it a 8 or something controversial like a 7.9

Which will discredit them more in light of their 9.8 and 9 scores of Halo 4 and MCC respectively, granted that single player is definitely the biggest factor in their review scores.

Do you guys think we get any launch numbers from MS or 343i soon?
My bet is 1.25 million in the first few days at the minimum, max 2 million.

So you don't thing the four sub 80 scores fair but the two 100 scores are fine?
They're all fair, I just think it sucks to have such good reviews to be dragged down by a few low scores.

I guess mixed would be 70 or lower now that I think of it. High 70s is still pretty good.

Everyone gave MCC high scoresbased on nostalgia and before trying multiplayer, everyone knows that game should have got 7's just because it was half broken (if they dropped mp all together I would give it 9.5)

Agreed, the SPs were great.

Didn't IGN delay their review till post release and still give it a 9 though?

7 is generous.
True all the bugs and such would drop it to a 5
Which is a shame because it had 4 great games on there

As far a website called 'reclaimerhub' giving it a 9/10, seems a little bias. Would be like me starting a blog site called 'courtoforyx' and giving Destiny 2 a 9/10

For me it was unacceptable because it was key feature of the game.

To be fair these are the unacepatable launch games in my book (this gen):

- Battlefield 4
- DriveClub
- Assassins Creed last year
- MCC

These game were utter broke at launch and months after...

So the remaining reviews are:

IGN
Game Informer
Eurogamer
Gamespot
Gametrailers

So the metacritic could go up or down right?

Idk I was getting into matches of battlefield 4 by connecting to European servers instead of US servers, but then again I didn't get an Xbox one until the week of thanksgivings. I also didn't encounter the deleted save issue so maybe I'm a special case and I won't argue that list with you.

I got MCC when it was $20, and it was the best $20 game I ever played lol, but yeah MP still didn't work for me at the time and doing co cop was a mess

Just adding to the repetition:

Aggregate scoring in the case of metacritic is fairly arbitrary. If metacritic as a system provided an overarching guideline to reviews with systematic weights to various points (story, gfx, control, replay value, length, what have you) and offered to reviewers, there would still be inherent bias included, but the values would be more normalized. On top of that, personal enjoyment (just like book and movie reviews) vs reviewer enjoyment is again disjointed. What metacritic can provide, in large pools of points, is a general trend as to whether a game is a shitshow or well crafted, but the nuanced discussion over individual points and ratings has to be taken on a game by game basis, and not across games. As others have alluded to, excitement, expectations, rushed reviews, personal bias and preference all provide variation.

Having said all that, inflated ratings and the requirement to be "> 90 on metacritic" is a bit ludicrous to me. And I say this not as a Halo lover, but in general. Wasteland 2 has been incredibly enjoyable, and I've put in a ton of time into it. 80 points when reading general trends on here makes it seem like a failure.

Only reason I'm not buying this full price is my disappointment after MCC. I couldn't play MP almost at all for first 6 months, I played under 10 games in that time. I tried after every patch for hours. And after that, I couldn't get refund from MS and I was foolish to buy this game digitally. I know Halo 5 doesn't suffer from same problems, but this is only way I can show my disappointment.

Solo campaign only 4 hours and they really decided to drop split-screen for this? Looking at reviews saying the story moves nowhere I guess it's pretty safe to skip this for now, never played Halo for online multiplayer.
Gameplay looks fun though, I'm sure people who enjoy some online will have a blast, I'll have to do with Destiny for now.
