Well now that I finished every side op I guess I'm done with this game, I'm definitely not S'ing every mission or completing every side objective. Too bad there are no real difficulty modifiers in the game, that's what always brought me back to each MGS game.

This game should allow you to use the other difficulty modes for all the missions. But instead Kojima decided to just rehash them and have the audacity to put them up as main chapter missions to pad the game.

Regarding Quiet's humming; it'd have worked so much better to have her hum along with the background music / currently playing tape; similar to Transistor. Though I guess the combination of recording so much extra material and any additional licensing fees from applying that mechanic to licensed music would make it unrealistic unless they only had it work for a few songs.

Venom is really really good at doing impression. Why do you think he sounds exactly like Big Boss?

They should have gotten Sutherland to sing Love Deterrence; it'd have been a more effective use of their budget than having him record lines for a cutscene nobody will ever see ingame.

i mean sure not for a first run or even a second run, but I'm 120 hours in and doing the same set of missions over is not appealing (let's not even talk about side ops). If we're not gonna get more varied content than subsistence is the only thing that's really changed things up for me in a really fun way. Trying to work out how to take out that convey when I can't even find grenades was a really fun mess.

lemme put it this way: the first time crawling into OKB0 was a tense crazy fest because I didn't know anything about the layout, the guard placement, whatever. Now I could basically sleepwalk my way through there on normal especially if I have my gear setup, whatever methods I choose to get in there.
This is precisely what I'm talking about with freedom not meaning too much. Sure, I could switch up my equipment to just change things up for the sake of change. But because things about the bases tend to remain so damn static, changing my loadout hardly matters to me. You're forced to return to these locales so many times that you just begin to memorize the places and it's easy as shit, almost regardless of loadout. The only thing that could make an encounter more intense is if you forced yourself to do a subsistence style playthrough.

When I saw the AI start putting on helmets and nightvision goggles, I guess I expected the game to start getting harder and smarter. And it never really did.

No reflex and no marking would be the difficulty modifiers here...

It's a bizarre decision. Or at least, it'll be bizarre until Konami comes out and announces their difficulty pack DLC for $30. Then we'll all realize why.

Well, I think he's pretty cool. Better than Big Boss at least :p

I'll just make up a backup of this one...

If this game has taught me anything, it is this.

Big Boss and Solid Snake are fucking pussies compared to V.

;P I kid I kid, but man, fuck the Skulls fights. Seriously.

really, for me it howed that solid snake is the better man in every way

really wish that if konami ever decides to do another MGS, it would be a game that encompasses the events of Outer Heaven, Zanzibar and Shadow moses, even have an idea on how the game and its gameplay would go down

Why is the character named Quiet the most audible character in the entire game?

It always bothered me when I'd order her to scout a camp only to end up seeing her SONIC BOOMING down the middle of the place throwing up huge dust clouds while the guards carried on oblivious to the devastation around them.

So is phantom boss the one solid kills in the first metal gear? Where does solidus fit into the picture? I'm so lost..
Big Boss = Commander of FOXHOUND and later Zanzibar Land
Venom Boss = Commander of Outer Heaven (Formed from Diamond Dogs)

This much is fact. Whether Boss sent Solid to kill V or wanted V to succeed are unknown and left up to interpretation

I like to think that after the whole Skull Face affair and (brief) reconciliation with Cipher that BB was his public face for politics while the younger V was his field agent and manager of sorts, keeping the legendary soldier at his prime from everyone else's point of view. Makes the body double thing make more sense and V hasn't aged in the ending

That's just my headcanon though

True enough. That's a point I really liked about Super Bunnyhop's review, how he mentions how Solid Snake did a better job realizing The Boss' will unintentionally. XD

This game makes me so torn. LOVE the gameplay, but the story just feels empty to me.

I'm reminded of a Zero Punctuation review when he was talking about how Splatterhouse just stops rather than has a proper ending. He suggests the easy way around this would be to make the Ending First, then the Opening, and then all the stuff in the middle because that way if you have to cut anything it'll be a piece of fluff from the middle.

Solidus is not mentioned at all in this game. He was born anywhere from 1972 to 1976.

In the late 80s and early 90s he was engaged in some kind of civil war in Africa, presumably the Liberian Civil War. There he led a small boy unit, of which one of the child soldiers was Raiden.

Fast forward to 2000 or 2004 where Solidus is elected president of the US under the codename George Sears. By this point he looks at least a decade older than Liquid and Solidus despite actually being younger. This accelerated aging is the tradeoff for being a perfect genetic clone of Big Boss. He sends Ocelot to egg Liquid onto doing his little insurrection, and so the Shadow Moses incident occurs in 2005. Ocelot obtains test data on REX (the optical disc) and leaks it out into the public.

The Patriots (now an AI) see this as a threat. They did not want any information of that incident to be made public so they intentionally let it leak that they want to assassinate Solidus. He goes underground with the help of Ocelot, but unbeknownst to him he is actually just planned opposition for Raiden in the events of MGS2.

He stages what he thinks is an act of rebellion against the Patriots in 2009 but it turns out it was just part of a stress test for an AI. Everything he did to rebel against the Patriots was allowed to happen by the Patriots. Raiden severs his spine in a final duel where he goes into a coma until 2014.

Solidus' body is obtained by Eva and Raiden. His skin is used by Eva to graft onto Big Boss (ew gross) so at this point Solidus is not only in a coma but he looks like a zombie freak. Ocelot, who is working against the Patriots during MGS4, uses Solidus' body to gain access to SOP which relies on using Big Boss' genetic information as a key of sort (and Solidus has the 100% same genetics as Big Boss). Ocelot then tosses Solidus' body into burning wreckage where he finally dies. The Big Boss at the end of MGS4 is wearing Solidus' skin. He has his left eye from Liquid whose body parts were also used to reconstruct him by Eva.

Basically Solidus gets fucked.

Bad Dads the video game.

Big Boss/Venom: bad to Eli.
Huey: oh god FUCK YOU Huey.
Miller: Hits a kid immediately on meeting him.

Now, to be fair to Miller, he's kind of an abusive ass to everyone. Plus, he sets up a comprehensive program designed specifically to disarm and reintegrate child soldiers back into society. That alone kind of makes him better than most other characters in the series. Also he's committed to removing all the nukes from the world, and that's pretty noble.

Although it sort of makes it seem like his lust for revenge turned out to be a good thing, since he channeled it into these great causes.

I've finally wrapped all of the story missions, including 45. That was a much better close to the game than 46 and yet I feel very empty inside now. All that work, all that time, all those moments, all gone. It feels like my mission is finally complete...and that makes me sad.

It would have been great if there were more story beats like the end of 45, with a feeling of some sort of completeness and proper closure for characters instead of what we were left with. The Venom Snake reveal in 46 was poorly put together and the lack of development of Liquid or even touching on most of the other characters was a massive letdown. Even the cut stuff doesn't do the series justice and seems shoddily put together. Maybe we've given Kojima too much credit or he wasn't given enough time to pull his magnum opus together the way we wanted. Either way, MGSV may have been to big and too ambitious, drowning out Kojima's actual vision for the closing of the loop.

This would have been the game of the forever if the story could have matched its gameplay.

Someone mentioned it earlier (I think it was Griss?) but the scene where they bring child soldiers back to base and V goes "See? They're naturals." And then Kaz gets really miffed and says "NO! They are NOT naturals!" Shows that he does actually care about these kids and shows the beginning of his relationship falling apart with Boss due to his ideals.

Technically V isn't Boss, but he shares his ideals.

But yeah, Kaz is an angry jerk to everyone in this game. Except Code Talker. He definitely didn't have to hit the kid with his cane.

if they ever make more metal gear games

I want a remake of Metal Gear 1 and 2, play as Solid Snake with the mutha fuckin Fox engine and GOAT MGSV controls.

but more importantly

a game about Liquid Snake during the Gulf War. Fox engine. yo ugh.
Yeah, after MGSV a Liquid game would be the best thing ever. Him getting captured and being a POW would be interesting and a good way to show how his already jaded personality dips off of the deep end.

Like he's incredibly goofy in Peace Walker from what I can recall, and comes across as affable in Metal Gear 2, that everything I can recall outside of the Hamburger tapes he's just fucking consumed by bitterness, vengeance, and spite.

Though now that I think back I think he's the guy who gives Snake the idea to use a makeshift flamethrower against Big Boss, so I guess canonically he was still pretty vengeful.

It wont happen. Konami doesn't give a damn for tripleA games anymore.

Huh... wasn't the opposite said a few days ago?
Yeah. Makes me think they meant Metal Gear isn't in the immediate future, but isn't off the record for good. I dunno though. Confusing statements.

Thats what I'm fuzzy on. So solid takes out Venom Snake in Outer heaven and the real Big Boss in Zanzibarland?

Now that you mention it I do recall that Solidus aged faster and Ocelot tossing him into an oven. It's been so long and I've forgotten so much of MGS lore. I think I'm gonna google some stuff and refresh my memory.

i thought about this a lot and i think the perfect MGS game would be something like this:
- similar controls structure as MGSV
- base development stuff and recruitment removed
- rations and life bar back
- smaller and more diverse areas instead of huge open world full off nothing, something more akin to camp omega, and a couple other areas to accomodate different kinds of missions, like destroying moving convoys, etc
- main characters is Solid Snake
- 3 main mission, Outer Heaven, Zanzibar, Shadow Moses
- before each main mission, you would have Foxhound missions, where at the same time you could see interactions between characters, like before OH, we would see mainly interactions between SS and BB, or SS and Gray fox, after OH and before Zanzibar, maybe something with SS and campbell, or SS and miller
- main missions, especially OH and Zanzibar would obviously have a more fleshed out story
- normal missions would be like MGSV where you could choose equipment, the weapons you find on missions would be added for future missions or replays of previous ones
- main ones would be POS style, where you have to infiltrate with nothing and search for weapons and equipment like in the originals

now the best part:
- after Zanzibar, snake f'd off to Alaska, so this time you would have available the MGS1 Foxhound unit, fulfilling missions with each one of them and each would have obvious strengths from each other, liquid would literally be SS or BB, raven would have available weapons that the others couldnt wield, octopus would be more infiltration stuff, taking the appearance of targets, information gathering, etc, wolf would be great for sniping and assassinations, mantis could control people, read minds, etc, ocelot, maybe something with the CSAA.
- After you finish the 3rd main mission, MGS1, you'd unlock, kill miller mission with liquid and ocelot, and kill dr.clark mission with cyborg ninja gray fox

maybe too ambitious of a project to be feasible, or konami even doing anything else MG related

Solidus is the true hero of the franchise.

He is selfish and only does what he does to leave a legacy for himself. Since he cannot bear children, he has this sense of entitlement that makes Liquid's ambitious nature seem quaint.

His justification for killing Raiden's parents is also laughably flimsy. "I needed to know if we were really someone else's creation." Maybe its a translation error thing but how do you even read into that. He couldn't adopt a normal child?

Finished Mission 45, holy shit that was difficult but I only died twice, I expected to die a million times from what some have said in this thread.

TIME TO PLAY THE FINAL MISSION OF THIS FUCKING GAME and supposedly hate this game forever.

Edit: lol I accidentally posted this in the spoiler thread, I'll be back in a sec to this thread. Kinda ironic if you ask me.
