Well, sure, NOW, and in the near future. Just like atmospheric flight was at one time something only the rich or adventurous could do or would want to do.

But the hope is to improve the technology so that at some point in the future it will be a cheaper, easier thing to accomplish.

And you can't get there without first going through these stages of trial and error and limited availability, high cost, etc.

Sure but if what you describe was the actual objective, there would be nothing even close to what Virgin is doing. We'd be trying to put big heavy loads in space for cheap, ideally without using fuel. Probably something like a space elevator that releases the cargo in orbit, then descends in location, ideally without fuel.

You don't pretend to build an hydro-electric dam by first making an elaborate sand castle.

It's again proof of how far we are from where we should be. We're doing shadow puppets to convince ourselves we're in the 21st century; we're not on the space front.

Yes, I feel that largely covers much of what has happened with the history of manned space flight: Rush to goal X while in the process basically ignoring how useful the path will be in doing anything other than exactly goal X. Then you hit goal X without actually having set a strong foundation for anything beyond that. That and the entire "Welp, we sure showed those commies! Let's shut it down boys!" from the suits in government.

It's a pretty depressing thing to say, but space travel needs to stop outright.

Hope for the best for the pilots, but I would be surprised if they made it.

Have you ever used a handheld, cordless vacuum cleaner? air cushioned trainers such as Nike Air shoes? Ran a marathon and used one of those weird plastic blankets afterwards? Been on an airport runway? Swallowed a pill with a camera or sensor of some type that the doctor used to diagnose you? Used a personal storm warning system while out on a boat? Ridden an aircraft that has winglets? Fed a child baby food? Had baby food? Know anyone that has ever been on life support? Used an LED? Worn fog/steam resistant goggles, glasses, ski/diving gear? Used a home blood pressure kit? Know any elderly persons who use Lifeline or another personal alarm system like it? Used furniture like mattresses or pillows that have memory foam technology (anything by Tempur-pedic, for instance)? Viewed satellite television, GPS, used a modern smartphone to access the internet from anywhere? Known about a firefighter using a portable respiratory device to go into fires to rescue people or facilitate breathing without hindering their maneuverability?

You can thank NASA. Every one of these inventions, and many, many, many others, were either engineered by, or given their modern designs by NASA which needed to engineer solutions to space-related problems. (Like having mattresses which don't rely upon gravitationally-forced spring compressions)

I wouldn't say that. Personally I want space travel to continue and I support Virgin's mission. So I'm not the one you're referring to.

However, I do think there is a focus on protecting human life at all cost of late. Mostly due to our relative prosperity. Human life should be protected and defended, however, for any new frontiers there will be sacrifices sometime in human life.

I think since our generation hasn't seen a major global war or huge infrastructure projects, we've become unrealistic at the cost of progress, which sometimes does require human life sadly.

No, the difficulty of space flight does not make me consider the possibility that the moon landing was fake, because the latter is clearly an asinine conspiracy theory not supported by evidence and deeply disrespectful to the many people, including the pilot killed in this crash, who gave their lives to realize space exploration. Because the position that the moon landing did not occur is a marginalized position that has been debunked consistently since 1969 and is typically only held by fringe actors who reject evidence and behave irrationally, I short-circuited into making a crass observation that you were crazy.

I've seen you use those terms in another thread. You are essentially saying that she's an infidel and heretic. It's pretty offensive, especially since it is accepted that calling someone a kafir is considered a slur.

Also someone has died in a crash. This person was an astronaught whose job this was someone who is trained and chose to do their job. You have come into this thread with a post implying that the moon landings did not occur. It's offensive to their memory to say such bullshit.

I have the deepest respect for people piloting those space ships. They know that -- all things considered -- they're still pioneers of their field and that catastrophe is always a realistic possibility. And yet, they're still facing danger because they believe in the importance of what they're doing. This is also why I think that everyone who tries to use this accident as an argument to stop space travels is unlikely to speak in behalf of the actual victim of this. The company halting the project is likely to be the last thing he would have wanted.

With that being said, rest in peace. This is a terrible accident and tragedy.

I'm pretty sure the last person to die from a space related accident was in 2003. Considering we're almost into 2015, and we have only just lost 1 guy. I'd say we're doing well.

As for Virgin, they won't ever learn anything by getting everything right. This was a big mistake, but it's also a big learning experience for them.

I'd rather fly the guys that know exactly what can happen, what can go wrong and have tested their vehicle enough times to see everything.

What's the source on the LED - NASA connection? I seem to remember being taught about LEDs and their history in school and don't remember any mention of that.
 
These are terrible news for everyone hoping that space trips could get as casual as air travel today.

There are unlimited amounts of resources in space, investment in technology to be used in space often results applications for everyday products, etc.

Accidents happen, maybe airplanes need to be banned because a plane goes down every once in a while?
Cars should be banned, people die in cars all the time!
 
Space travel needs to stop? Wtf?

If we do that we can basically stop breeding as a species and just get to the inevitable death of humanity.

Because that will happen if we stop space travel and stay on this rock with the way we are living on it.
