Infamous: Second Son Review Thread

Reviews aside, I've been watching gamersyde direct feed videos... HOLY FUCK at this game IQ and graphics overall. I already pre ordered digitally, it's a shame you can't preload, it seems absurd you can't.

And all the gamers that are saying this is by far the best infamous of the 3 and it has the lowest review scores of the entire series. People scratch their heads.

The reviews I've read justified their reaction by describing ways it feels structurally so similar to the previous games, and it misses story and combat opportunities (in addition to some open-world faux-pas). "Diminishing returns" is a loaded word around here, but I think that's describes it. Plenty of series see that same reaction, and I don't think it's necessarily unfair.

That being said, when the review average of a game is still in the 80s, that's hardly something to sneeze at.

I'm not talking about developer incentives. I'm talking about the average person. Whether a game got a 81% or 85% isn't going to stop someone from buying a game.

Unfortunately the average person doesn't understand "math" and doesn't realize it takes many many more 9 and 10 reviews to raise a game's metacritic average from 81 to say, 85.

We just think differently. halo brought in regenerating health and endless amounts of fps have tried to copy the Halo formula since so the game was revolutionary imo.

Also i loved Shenmue but how was it revolutionary?, because you could go to work in the game?

Because it introduced QTE's something that spawned new genres out of it.
Because it created a new genre.

My true feeling? I'm not hating on anything, but I don't see the point in talking about a game that has nothing to do with Infamous. It is after all The Infamous Second Son Review Thread not Lets Find Someone Who I Think Hates My Favorite Game So I'll Call Him Out Thread.

Then don't post shit like this

Damn guys Titanfall is so good that people who enjoy it go into review threads for other games and talk about it. A game so good that praising it in a off topic thread is more fun then actually playing it. EA and Respawn you have a true hit on your hands!

.

k?

Getting dangerously close to my boiling point, at which point I'll start talking to people as I how actually view them to be, so I'll end this here with just one question.

What is Halo's genre?

That just made me spit orange juice down my white t-shirt, touche.

Was it really necessary for Adam Sessler to tell us about the footage restrictions SP and Sony had applied for reviewers? Doesn't every game have some sort of footage restriction? Or am I just seeing things?

I do find his gameplay comments to be unusual to say the least. Infamous 1 and especially Infamous 2 had amazing gameplay! Fluid and responsive! I don't understand how you can say that it's a bad thing if Infamous 3 has exactly the same gameplay.

Wait, so the 5 hours of content isn't available day 1 at all? Only a "portion" of them? And I won't have a complete game to play for another 6 weeks?!?!?!?

Yay AAA gaming! Should have waited 2 months, picked up the game used for $40, and had a complete experience. Way to discourage the used market by not coming out with a complete game on your disc.

Thank goodness I made this game my first day 1 digital purchase ever on consoles. Otherwise I might have saved money and had a more complete experience 2 months later.

Implying there is not already an SP story to play through as the EXTRA content is released.
Implying it is more logical to wait until the definitive edition comes out on PS5 to get the most full-featured version.

Your argument doesn't make much sense

Because it introduced QTE's something that spawned new genres out of it.
Because it created a new genre.

You mean like Halo brought in regenerating health?, i know which game mechanic i prefered as well!.

EDIT. Also Shenmue didn't invent qte's, they had been around since Dragons Lair days, the Sega CD was built on qte's.

Wtf is going on. This game has a metacritic of 81 and people are throwing a fit?

Games been received very well, I'm sure it'll be the best infamous.

Have these people beat the game yet? I saw some complains about repetition and the ending so it might be too early to judge the reviewers. Still seems like a good (Infamous) game overall, so it doesn't matter anyway.

Most of GAF that got the game early....have already beat the game and have given their oppinions. I beat the game 5 days ago....people were done with the game LAST FRIDAY.

Wow, this thread blew up fast. I've not even had a chance to read it yet.

Anyway, scores are about what I expected. I can't wait to pick this up tomorrow.

maybe he didnt enjoy 1 and 2 that much? I thought i1s gameplay was kinda boring personally.

Am happy with the 81 metacritic average, am still getting it (can't cancel my pre-order now anyway).
Thing is, outside of Naughty Dog and Polyphony the rest of Sony's first party devs aren't really anything to write home about.

Sucker Punch and Guerilla make good looking, competent games, but that's about it. Team ICO are still labouring on vapourware The Last Guardian, Evo studios take almost as long to make racing games not quite as good as Polyphony's and Santa Monica are slaves to God of War.

Something needs to change.
Please stop, Sony has created more new ips than either Nintendo or Microsoft while still supporting many of its established franchises. They don't continue to dole out sequel after sequel and honstly I wonder would you still have the same position in regards to classifying Sucker Punch/Guerrilla as "tech studios" (and honestly it wasn't until recently could that be said about SP) were their games scored higher.

There's a double standard deeply ingrained into many of these gaming publications, certain franchises are faulted for being more of the same yet other, the more popular ones, recycle their same old formulas and are released on a annual or biannual basis yet these same criticism isn't raised against them. Madden, CoD, BF, AC are all blatantly guilty of this yet they still score higher and aren't as heavily scrutinized as alot of Sony exclusives.

I'll admit KZSF was disappointing in the advent of KZ2/3 but as someone else said it's sad how criminally underrated those games were considering how they weren't derivatives of some other title and had novel ideas, gameplay and mechanics.

Are you reading the same thread as I do? This started as a review thread 38 pages after and it reads more like a meltdown thread. Look at the front page of GAF, there are like 2 or 3 threads of "next gen gameplay".

Let us never forget when Eurogamer gave Uncharted 3 an 8.

A dark day, indeed.

That so? Huh... didn't knew that. I stand corrected on the subject of QTE being revolutionary then. Not about how shenmue created an entire new genre though.

Not an awful lot. I'd say Titanfall at least brings parkour to an online multiplayer FPS and well...Nintendoland maybe for its asymmetrical gameplay?

I can think of several online games that had parkour before Titanfall. Tribes for instance.

I don´t see anything wrong with the scores, i´m surprised there´s a lot of 9, the game is clearly a 7, maybe an 8 for it´s graphics only.

Looks like a next gen game, plays like a old gen game = 7-8 is fair.

Gameplay doesn't change simply because a new generation begins. It changes slowly over time regardless. Sure, more power allows for more to be done in a game, but simply because the power exists doesn't mean developers are instantly going to make games differently. Next gen games should be scored based on other games that are coming out in the same time frame, not some random ideal of what you want video games to become. They'll get there, but it's not going to happen over night. I was kind of annoyed by how often the lower scored reviews complained about how the gameplay didn't "feel next gen". Reminds me of the early Vita reviews when critics were complaining that handheld titles weren't as involved as console titles. Well, duh. People are just setting their expectations too high and getting upset when they aren't met. That's not Sucker Punch's fault. Lower your expectations to a reasonable level, and you'll be much happier as a gamer.

So what are you implying if you don't even know who are you talking about and what did they even write? Are you for real?

Well I did see someone post Titanfall >>>>>> Infamous in one and something about Sessler giving Titanfall 5/5 and etc. Give me time and i'll find others. I'm too busy watching basketball to see if i'll win a billion dollars.

Something that couldn't be done last gen. What that actually is though I don't know.

There is nothing that can be done now that couldn't be done last gen except 1080p gaming on consoles. Yes, scratching scratchies with the DS4 touch pad In Rayman is a clever idea, but it isn't next gen, and we won't see anything that could be described as such until VR takes off. The only real benefits of this new generation are console features like suspend/resume, Twitch streaming and Snap.

does the game trailers review spoil the powers in the game or is it safe to watch?

It's safe. Bloodworth was posting in the OT and said he followed the spoiler guidelines very closely. I think he said if you've been paying attention to the basic info released by Sucker Punch thus far, you won't find anything spoilery in it.

I do not understand any review for this below a 7.

Makes literally no sense.

Most review scores for this seem reasonable though. Should be higher IMO.

Scrolling through the review scores, I expected people to be celebrating. 9.5 from Destructoid, 4/5 from Giantbomb, generally in the 8.5-9 range for most of the outlets people read, and very few low scores. For anyone who's a fan and genuinely appreciate what the series brings to the table, I would see these scores as pure validation.

I'n actually a little surprised the Metacritic score isn't somewhat higher, I guess because of how I intuitively weighted the reviews, but 81 is still very good. I'm more surprised by the turn this thread has taken. Nitpicking negative opinions, comparisons to Titanfall, bemoaning the reviews are under expectations... I was naive to expect all that much celebration. :P

Eh I dont like long games at all... they tend to be incredibly repetitive, especially long RPGs...20hrs is my max sweet spot...so two run throughs one good and one evil for 20-30hrs sounds good.

Some are and some aren't I don't think you can make a blanket statement about all of them being repetitive. 40 hours is a reasonable expectation for a $70 game. A game with anything less I will buy when the game is discounted thank you very much.

"Follow the waypoint marker, chase the suspect, investigate the scene, wipe out the jackboots; hunt the collectables and tick the boxes. You've been here many times before." From Eurogamer. This is what I was worried about. I'm really tired of this formula for open world games.

"I DONT LIKE YOUR FAVORITE GAME AND YOU DONT LIKE MY FAVORITE GAME"

both games were revolutionary for their respective genres, but shenmue was going to be a saturn game, and id imagine game-play wise it would have very little differences with what we got, the fps genre as a whole really benefited from ps2/gc/xbox hardware but the regenerating health isnt "next gen gameplay" that mechanic is entirely possible on every console before the xbox too.

I'm willing to bet that the majority of games we get this gen from a gameplay standpoint will be possible on the ps3 and 360, we are well past power limiting gameplay for the most part. remeber for the most part, from a gameplay standpoint, most ps3 360 games are possible on a ps2, xbox, gamecube/wii. I'd argue only physics heavy games outstrip the capability of the ps2 gen. I can only really see games with more physics and good graphics + VR being considered "next gen gameplay" for the most part it will be the same with better graphics.
