Infamous: Second Son Review Thread

Dude, seriously. All of those we're picking on reviewer bias. Not Titanfall. Which I have and like.

Getting a different score than Titanfall is reviewer bias?

Uhh, it makes perfect sense in context, they're clearly talking about some odd gameplay decisions to start the game:

Ah, that makes more sense. Though I'd still disagree with it, because if anyone is expecting this gen to be miles beyond what we got last gen in terms of gameplay, they're in for a rough gen. :p

Well, then you know what you're getting with Second Son. That's great. Hope you have a ball.

Doesn't mean that every game and game series you love is "A tier", though. That's my whole point.

Your "A tier" is just not the same as mine. "A-tier" means nothing, this is just your taste vs mine. Hence my "E tier" comment.

I remember the media narrative for Assassin's Creed 1 being that it was the first real next-gen game because it was doing things with the gameplay that could not be done on previous systems.

I also remember really hating that game after I was so excited for the first true next-gen game.

Basically, what "next-gen gameplay" means is going to vary from person to person, reviewer to reviewer, and how much they prioritize or emphasize it will be different, too.

So considering that PC gaming has been technologically more advanced than console gaming for awhile, I'm guessing that this next generation gameplay they're looking for is found there...oh wait that's not true is it? WTF is next gen gameplay?

I think you're quite naïve if you think that's the reason for some of the comments here.

I mean the majority, not individual outliers. That's why review threads get the attention they do, and some reviews get people upset...just saying it isn't all stupidity and immaturity.

Pleasantly surprised by the reviews. Can't wait til my copy shows up.

I haven't taken a break from Dark Souls (1, not 2), in over two weeks, so I'm really looking forward to trying out something new and, hopefully, not so punishing.

Very much so. Anyone under the age of 22/23 likely won't remember.

I remember it, it was a joke back then too. Hell, Gears of War was mentioned in this thread as being a game that had next gen gameplay in 2006 but I'm going to guess that person never played Kill Switch on PS2/Xbox.

The last time I took any meaning from that phrase was the jump to 3D with Saturn/PS1/N64.

In what way, people love to toss that out there but never back it up with what should've been done. The fact is nearly every single triple a game brings little to the table with game changing gameplay.

Game reviewers aren't game designers. If the game feels stale it's not up to the reviewer to "back it up" with ways to make it feel fresh.

Whoa.

This is scoring much higher than many expected.

Edge. The original review hipster. *sniff* I am very hard to impress *sniff* never change

Now I'm confused to what Next Gen gameplay is..

AC4 has last gen gameplay
NBA2k14 has last gen gameplay
Dead Rising has last gen gameplay
Madden has last gen gameplay
Battlefield 4 has last gen gameplay
Need for speed Rivals has last gen gameplay
COD has last gen gameplay

So why exactly is a sequel getting docked scores for having the same gameplay as the original game. What difference does there need to be besides having different powers, which was never in previous games, a different story line different from the the last 2, a different set list of moves, other ways to navigate the city etc?

All of those games you mentioned though do have similar review scores as Infamous.

Many 8s and 9s with a decent number of 7s.

Whoa.

This is scoring much higher than many expected.

Is it? Seems pretty on target with what people expected... unless many expected less than 75 overall.

i don't think you have any idea what you're talking about

like at all

That's fine. The difference here is I can distinguish between stupid reviews and more proper reviews. Now if you think I'm basing my opinion on scores you are wrong because even Polygons reviews are mostly half-assed regardless of the 8.5 it got. As for Sessler, if you like that guy, more power to you but it still doesn't take away the fact that Adam Sessler is nothing more than a muppet.

This is the 3rd inFamous game and it plays almost exactly like the first two.

Next-Gen Gameplay: Pushing the inFamous series forward through gameplay innovations.

Last-Gen Gameplay: Same old gameplay already experienced through two games.
Traversal is nothing like the first two. The powers are also much more innovative than the first two. The story is apparently better than the first two. What more do you want out of a new entry for an established series?

Basically, what "next-gen gameplay" means is going to vary from person to person, reviewer to reviewer, and how much they prioritize or emphasize it will be different, too.

Whenever anyone mentions AC1 and how it was "next gen gameplay" they reference "crowd dynamics".

Which is bullshit, that didn't give us any "next gen gameplay". It added more people to streets. People were blown away simply because there were a lot of bodies in the crowds, and OMG LOOK AT THE ANIMATIONS AS HE WALKS THROUGH CROWDS!!!

I can understand this weird desire of reviewers for revolution along with the graphical leap, but it feels a bit unfair to the game to crticize it for being a better version if what's been done before.

For those that don't want to click:

"So, Infamous: Second Son. I like it a lot. Seattle is awesome, the powers are dope, the controls are responsive."
"I was surprised by how weak the story is, though, and I don't think Delsin and Reggie remotely approach Cole and Zeke in the character dept."
"Overall, a great game, but one with issues. Infamous 2 is still the game to beat in the franchise, in my opinion."

I have a feeling most games on PS4/Xbone will have "last gen gameplay." Nothing has really changed except slightly better graphics. People better get used to it. :P Very few devs want to take risks anymore.

Is it fair that titanfall gets better review scores than infamous? Considering it has a very small story plot and MP only?

While infamous has great graphics and it a open world?

Not tryna be bias. As I only have a Xbox One right now.

Already numbered 2 examples of leaps of "next gen" gameplay to another gaffer. Classic example? GTA IV, current example? MGS V.

You can´t speak about those 2 games without naming the major changes they went through gameplay wise hand in hand with the technical leaps they had.

GTAIV is just GTA3 on a bigger scale and more content.

GTAV might be a legitmate argument but how late in the generation was that?

MGSV is not a full game yet. We have no idea if the phantom pain can carry that open world gameplay for a full game and its years away.

Nothing is fair in love and (console) war.

For those of you looking to cancel your PSN pre orders, contacting Sony Support yielded success for me. They gave me the one line lecture about the terms of agreement stating all sales are final but they processed the refund for me anyway. I was playing with fire a bit because I purchased it with my US PSN account and I'm in Australia. I hope they don't do geo checks or even care :\

I will pick this game up eventually but not for 60 bucks. My backlog is too huge to justify spending that on a game where chances are I won't enjoy it that much.

No other game this gen has reinvented the wheel either.

I agree, but it really depends on who you talk to. Some would say Titanfall, which is silly imo.

I honestly don't see anything coming out in 2014 that will define the new gen.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if the new gen is basically like the last gen with better graphics.

Occulus Rift and Morpheus might change that, but given their limited application, I doubt it.

Exactly, considering 99% of people here haven't played it. I know people were hoping this was going to be a top tier game, but how can you be mad at aggregate reviews? Most of the time the meta score is pretty bang on.

Agree completely with the first part, but I could not disagree more with the last part.

All those games have a similar metacritic as Second Son, so it seems the charge is consistent.

No, where in there reviews were docked for being more of the same. Even considering NBA2k14 added DRM to their game, it still didn't get docked points so what really is the issue. Do reviewers pick and choose what is more important to them each different game that falls into their laps? Thursday it's gameplay, Friday it's Graphics, Saturday it's Multiplayer like what? This type of criticism should be universal if that's the case.

so, essentially, if you like infamous, you're going to love it. if you don't it's not going to change your mind. thank god i'm the former

I wouldn't worry about scores. Worry about the content of the reviews.

Reviewers are human beings. But yeah they should be consistent if they can.

You are comparing two very different games. Titanfall is MP only but inFamous is SP only. It depends on what each individual values more. Playing with others/replayability or playing through a crafted single player experience.

Yet, basically everyone on GAF who got it early says it's the best in the series. There's reviews for you.
Have these people beat the game yet? I saw some complains about repetition and the ending so it might be too early to judge the reviewers. Still seems like a good (Infamous) game overall, so it doesn't matter anyway.
