Wasn't the actual filming of the show extremely long? I think McConaughey or Harrelson said it felt like shooting two or three movies back to back.

They said it was intense in that they were filming a lot of scenes a day, but I don't think the shoot itself was significantly longer than on any other TV show.

Stuff like the interview scenes for each actor would likely of been shot over a few days. It's the location shooting that really takes the time.

When Marty came running out of HQ to tackle him, Rust should have said, "I see you know that I mowed your lawn again."

Good episode. Felt like it had to tick a few required boxes to get 2002 closed as the glue between the original case and present day. And damn Woody must have enjoyed the shit out of this role.

Yeah, at this rate I give it maybe two more eps before they run out of content.

"In a former life, I used to exhaust myself navigating crude men who thought they were clever, so ask your questions or I'm leaving."

Maggie always get the most "writery" dialog, not that I mind all that much.

I really love the way this series is shot. So much greatness.
But I wish I'd get to know a little more about the background of the case. The occult stuff is only dealt with very briefly and the last two episodes will most likely be about bringing the case to an end and McConaughey/Harrelsons relationship. Not nearly enough time to introduce the yellow king and shine a light on his backgrounds.
One or two episodes more could have solved that I guess - but maybe the series is heading in a different direction, so I guess I should keep my criticism for myself for the next two weeks :P

So much of the discussion has turned into rating the females.... Don't get me wrong fellas, I love some naked women too.... but stop embarrassing me GAF.

It's what happens when you finally get an episode in which almost every beat goes down as has largely been inferred by the audience. This was very much a necessary, but predictable episode to bridge the gap from 2002 to 2012. We knew from the outset that Cohle had quit, we knew from the outset Marty's marriage had ended, we knew from the outset Marty and Cohle had a blowout. This episode was everything we knew happened finally occurring, thus the lack of meaty discussion compared to the first 5 (and presumably, the next 2) episodes.

So I think its a perfectly fair time to discuss just how lovely the ladies of TD are.

I must say, I appreciate the thought out response. :)

I don't mind a few posts here and there, but you guys really outdid yourselves last night. I deleted a bunch of the derail. Please get back on track now. Thank you.

"I caught, zero logic in all that. And that last bit? Pure gibberish."

Some good ones in this episode.

Edit: Marty cut off the interview at mention of the break-ins at Tuttles. These he was definitely involved in imo.

I didn't make a comment til this morning! Let my people go! :P

But seriously, I'll curb the discussion.

Anyone find it weird/lazy that Marty hasnt aged at all in 2012? He only lost some hair. Rust looks completely aged. The swagger is still there for sure.

I'm curious to see if Pizza attacks the multiple time period structure again for S2, or if he goes for a more linear approach. I'm hoping for the latter, simply because I want each season to be its own beast rather than trying to one-up the previous season.

I think it's important to understand that Pizzolatto has publicly stated he has no real interest in the serial killer. It's simply a vehicle with which to explore these characters and their lives.

- Salon: “True Detective” vs. film noir

Right. They changed up Marty's hair, but otherwise he looks mostly the same. I assumed it was one way of showing that Rust has been putting some extra miles on the tires the last few years between the booze and possibly the drugs.

It's a ruse. The man's been waging a one-man guerilla detective war against the cult of tuttle cthulhu for years now. He just knows he can blend in as burnt out redneck. Believe!

Not just in the 2002-2012 interim either. Those 4 years as an undercover narc, doing all that shit......eventually living hard like that had to catch up with him.

Also, given Rust's personality, its probably a safe bet to say that he didnt take very good care of himself from 2002-2012 while on his own obsessing over the Yellow King.

- Grantland's Hollywood Prospectus Podcast talks True Detective this week, among other things. Keep in mind that Andy Greenwald isn't a huge fan of the show.

We need to have him rip off the wig and take off the makeup when they get to the bar together - turns out he looks just like Rust circa 2002! It was part of the plan all along. :P

Very true.

When Rust pulls up to Tuttle's building, on the very top of it, there's this odd enclosed structure. Cohle looks up at it as he walks in. Anyone catch this? "It's a very interesting...building" Cohle says to Tuttle. The structure looks very much like the weird trianlge shaped stick/antler things Rust has been finding.

It's going to feel somber to not see Rust and Cohle again after this. I mean, we only got 2 episodes left, and then they're gone. I love the anthology format. It keeps the pace tight without any unnecessary stalling, and keeps the quality high. At the same time though, it's bittersweet, since these two characters have such depth to them, and we're already preparing our goodbyes.

I could watch 10 seasons with these guys, they're simply that awesome. At the same time, I think it's good that they're going with this format. I'm really looking forward to what Pizzolatto and Fukunaga(?) will bring us next season

It's been one hell of a ride.

Yeah, and this scarred man has to be The Yellow King everyone is talking about. It just fits. But what's weird is that so far, no one showed up with shiny flesh around their jaw. No burns in sight. So I think that this particular reveal will not be about which character it was...But rather, what that character means in the overarching plot. It kind of goes against the usual rules of the whodunit, but then again the show subverts most rules.

This scarred man will be the one thing that will tie everything together and I can't wait to see what he looks like.

For some reason I always assume the scarred man was impacted by the church fire. Either burned on purpose as some kind of ritual or got caught in the fire he started. I could be wrong on all that.

I thought there was going to be something to it (shape or construction) but they didn't give enough clue what he was talking about.

I was actually surprised in that scene (if he indeed suspected he was in the presence of the yellow king) that he didn't drop any "time is a flat circle" type philosophy just to gauge his reaction. You could tell he was there just to get a read on the guy.

But still could be red herring/didn't want to reveal anything too soon I guess.

I do think the Marty sex scenes are pretty gratuitous and mainly there to tittilate the viewer. I am not really buying that Marty would be such a magnet for unusually attractive young women.
Marty's a big goddamn hometown hero as far as that part of the world is concerned. That's why Rust is so fucking pissed with him. Marty's sinful shortcomings (wrath, pride, lust) have been covered by Rust's natural investigative techniques and successes at gaining confessions, and it's Rust who ends up getting kicked in the ass by the brass, even when Marty is the fuckup. Marty's the one with the big happy family that he mistreats time and time again, while Rust is the one who goes home alone, and the one time he lets his guard down with Marty's wife, who came to him under the pretense of comfort, he gets used for revenge for Marty's transgressions. Marty knows how much of a chickenshit he really is, to boot... that's why he was prepared to put a bullet in Rust when Rust pulled him over... he fully expects his past to meet him.

Marty is Homer to Rust's Grimes.

She only went ballistic after she started to focus on remember the tall man's face. Then she saw Rust's face. Clearly this means that the Yellow King is Rust's twin brother or him from an alternate reality. Or maybe its his father. #BadInternetTVTheories

It's him from the future - face burned from the upcoming fight with Marty, future gear that looks like a yellow crown.

She's obviously looking at the viewer that means the audience is The Yellow King...It's just super deep that way.
