- What the Flick? discussing this week's episode of TD on youtube

You think? Half of its connect the dots (because they all have to mean something surely?) Scooby Doo land speculation again. A serial killer in a state with a population of about 4 million people and its going to turn out to be one of the two investigating detectives on the case? Makes absolutely no goddamn sense whatsoever, least of all that if either of them are the all powerful King in Yellow bumming it on a day job that they'd of let the investigation go as far as it did Vs ensuring it got taken over and buried by the special task force way back when.

When is it that critical self assessment as to the logical weight to a theory became unfashionable Vs throwing up any old nebulous baloney and hoping that it somehow sticks?

It's not enough to divine a connection and expect that to somehow justify a conclusion (Gabe talked for exactly 3 minutes..half-life 3 confirmed!!), you have to evaluate it in terms of whether it holds up to critical scrutiny. Look for the positives that re-affirm the conclusion, then consider the negatives that could undermine it. If there's little in the former camp to back it up and a lot in the latter chances are it doesn't make a whole heap of sense.

As much praise as the writing, acting, and camera work is getting, I rarely hear anyone mention the editing. To be honest, I feel like how they go from interview, to past, and then cut back to present day audio is extremely impressive. There's no confusion whatsoever where we are in the story and it keeps tension high while keeping the audience on their toes because we are aware that what they are saying may not be lining up exactly with what is actually happening.

yeah, I don't think many people realized how good it was until last episode where it intercut their false story with the actual events.

Did you read the entire article?

He was listing a variety of possible outcomes (if TD was a lesser show), based on various circumstantial evidence - and then essentially tossing them to the wind in favor of his last point, which is basically that the show is operating on deeper levels, with deeper meanings - a masterpiece, if you will.

Basically to your point.

my larger point is basically that the fact that all of those theories are somewhat plausible speaks volumes to the craft of the story

TD's opening titles have got to rank up there with my all-time favs. Deadwood, True Blood (even if I hate the show), John From Cincinnati, True Detective.

I love the True Detective opening. Some of my other favorites are Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Da Vinci's Demons

+1 for carnivale as favorite intro

think game of thrones is outstanding too, because its also functional

and yeah i love TD's intro, but i cant tell how much of that is me associating it with the god-tier show that follows

I think there's a connection we have all been severely overlooking. Rust and Marty have a falling out in 2002. What event happened around that time that could bring about such a scenario? Well, the Sega Dreamcast debuted 9/9/99, and was discontinued in March 2001. What is the logo of the Sega Dreamcast? That's right:

The Dreamcast is obviously an important object in this ongoing saga.

In 2002 Marty sold his Dreamcast to buy a Playstation 2.

Rust never forgave him.

Just watched all 5 episodes today. Show is phenomenal.

One thing I noticed in the first episode. When it is showing some one walking accros the field. He the proceeds to use a lighter. Then it shows Rust who uses his lighter......

Kinda weird.

someone in this thread mentioned the theory that the first shot of the fire in ep 1 is actually a flash forward to the end of the series. Its possible

By what measure?

You honestly think that the 'spirit of the yellow king' transferring to Cohle from Ledoux like some twin peaks rip off makes much sense? Beyond Cohle tripping out occasionally to the odd post undercover acid flashback has the show demonstrated any inclination so far to go down the supernatural route? I guess it's vaguely possible, in the same sense that it's possible that aliens or the Bavarian Illuminati are behind everything as well, but it would kind of a jarring experience and at odds with the pretty grounded nature of the show so far.

Take a second look at what's proposed in that article and take the time to really evaluate each proposition by the writer. None of them really hold up to much scrutiny in truth, and pretty much all are built upon house of cards assumptions.

When he says 'or none of the above' he's not actually invalidating his speculations, he's simply implying it could just be something else.

Does that make TD any less of a masterpiece? Hell no. It's so far a brilliantly put together show, but that is not a good article with regards to constructive speculation.

Not knowing a lot about the technical production of things, that is when it really stood out to me. The voice over from 2012 conflicting with the events on screen but it all being utterly clear in regards to what was happening.

Those of you expecting a supernatural twist these last 3 episodes are going to be disappointed

If there is one, I'd like to see it like Lovecraftian style where it's either implied, hidden, or unreliably presented, so there is doubt there. If they do go that route, I think that's how they would do it. Not saying they will though...

Something implied is possible, it definitely won't be blantant. I could maybe see an X-files style ambiguous ending. Rust plays the role of Scully, explaining it logically while Marty has a more religious/supernatural explanation for the same event.

Its been very grounded so far outside of allusions and allegory. I don't think that will change

I just watched this week's episode and was thinking the same thing. The first ~20 minutes are cutting between the 2012 investigation, the 1995 hearing where they lie, and the actual 1995 situation with dialogue laid on top of and in all 3 time periods + that low droning score going in and out, and it's all done perfectly. Then the time skip to 2002 is so seamless that it just feels like a normal cut. It's really impressive.
