What the heck is an Intellivision Amico?

Creators compare the $250 crowdfunded console's power to a chip from a $100 2016 smartphone.

Ars' usually decent reporting on the incoming shit show that is Amico:

The Intellivision developer portal was recently publicly available online, no password needed, for long enough to have the details saved at archive.org earlier this month. Sources with knowledge about Amico have confirmed to Ars Technica that the leaked specs we've seen were legitimate. While the specs were live as recently as June 14 and line up with Amico's own official specs page, they could still change between now and the system's launch.

The developer portal calls out Qualcomm's Smart Display 200 platform—and specifies its "APQ8053-Lite" model, which includes a 1.8GHz Snapdragon 624, an Adreno 506 GPU, 2GB of LPDDR3 DRAM, 16GB of Flash storage, and built-in controllers for interfaces like HDMI, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth (but not Ethernet). While prices on bulk-manufactured SoC motherboards can vary for many reasons, this one appears to be available in bulk orders at rates near $38 per board (though that one includes a camera sensor, which Amico will not have in either its primary box or its controllers).

amico-commandments.jpg

Many of Amico's "Ten Commandments" are referenced repeatedly throughout the portal, but one is not: the "Intellivision Quality Control Scale." After combing through the archived dev portal, I only found one subjective clarification, that the scale "touches on all three tenets of sensible, simple, and fun." One rule, buried in the dev portal, mandates no less than 30 fps refreshes in terms of visual performance, which hopefully means the stuttering frame rates in some Amico preview videos will be remedied by the time those games launch. (To be fair, some revealed games appear to run at 60 fps, but we haven't seen whether that performance will translate to final Amico hardware.)

Online multiplayer gaming is not mentioned anywhere in the portal, while one huge development consideration is missing from the above image: a strict attitude about downloadable updates and patches. Intellivision warns its devs that patches should be "a very rare occurrence (a great exception) and not be counted on as a way to extend development time or postpone needed improvements to your game." The same section recommends that game makers "limit the size and scope of your game to what you can test completely."

As seen in the above image, Intellivision caps Amico game prices at $10, and there's no DLC workaround—"no upselling of downloadable content and no in-app purchases," the guidelines declare. Intellivision also insists that any game sold for Amico should be "a complete, high-quality game [with] hours of fun."
My admittedly subjective response to this restriction is a bit ambivalent. I hate predatory add-on content like loot boxes, and I appreciate one-and-done game purchases. But I also recognize that $10 as a maximum game price, within an unproven, brand-new digital marketplace, inherently limits the scope of how much a game company can expect to earn from even a highly successful game (and, in turn, how much they can afford to devote to development). A lockdown on patch support also means online multiplayer in Amico games would be inherently difficult to support, since online modes tend to expose issues like character balance and cheat exploits.
Worse, the profit margins for third-party devs on Amico might not be great. In a video shared with Ars Technica that Tallarico filmed as a pitch to angel investors in March 2021, he estimated that Intellivision takes "around 50 percent" of third-party game-sales revenue—well above the 30 percent cut that has proven controversial for the likes of Apple.

It's what happens when you wake up one morning to discover you are Tommy Tallarico and the first thing to cross your mind is, "fuck it, let's flush any credibility I had out the window".

I was looking at an Amico, until I saw that it retails for like $300. Now my question: what the heck is the context of this gif?

One of the main things that old school gaming fans need to know is that it has Earthworm Jim 4 as an exclusive to the console, which I've been waiting for for almost a year now.

The intellivision thing comes pre-equipped with games, but I don't know how new games will be released on the console. I tend to not like digital stuff, so we will see what happens with this thing. The list of 10 things for the console is pretty clearly targeting a thin slice of the gaming community, and I think it's pretty clearly not intended to compete with the big 3 consoles. They may actually end up making alot of money, to be honest. I will likely get one at launch if there are like 10 games I'd play, Earthworm Jim 4 plus a few more. $300 is a little pricey for one game.

Tommy Tallarico seems to be having a meltdown.

The guy is honestly just trying to sell a video gaming console. I just briefly looked into the situation you linked to, and I couldn't agree with former President Trump anymore than he's already stated during his 4 (successful) years in office that journalists, in many cases, are just pure sleaze.

But at least the "journalist" posted in his little twitter bio that his pronouns to identify him were "he/him", because quite frankly, I was having trouble figuring that out from the start.

I appreciate you posting this though, dude, it's stuff to watch out for if you're ever planning on competing with Nintendo, Xbox Series X and PS5.

It's a long story.

But basically Tommy Tallarico got some undisclosed illness. Uncertain about his future, he decided to get into making and distributing illegal drugs in order to save up a large amount of money to leave for his family if he ends up dying. So now in between eating breakfast with his son and his day job as a videogame musician/composer he is making crystal meth which he is distributing in the form of gaming themed Pez dispensers. In the underworld he is known as Alexander von Humboldt.

Now he needs to find a way to launder all that money he has been making on the side. And what better way than a console that seems to almost exclusively feature games inspired by Flash game sites from 2005.

EDIT:

Their trailer is still the most hilariously tone deaf thing I've seen in a while

There were many choices to choose and for some reason you landed on posting this.

Tommy can't handle criticism. Never could, his ego won't allow it, and it's gotten worse ever since he got a pile of nobody-cares-tier YouTubers to start shilling for him because it's a guarantee he'll share the videos and give them publicity.

- Smartphone quality
- Mandating exclusivity
- Max $10 games
- No DLC
- Intellivision cut is 50%

Add it up and it's a developers dream environment. lol.

Combined with the $250 system price and this thing wont even launch. And if it does, I dont think it'll even sell Atari Jaguar sales which was est. at no more than 250,000 according to wiki. At least Jaguar did get some retailer exposure as I remember seeing it in some weekly game ads. This thing will direct to order from a corporate site.

In theory it sounds like a nice system for the youngins. If every game is E then you can least rest assured that little timmy won't get exposed to big tits and wet cunts.
But at 250 you might as well buy a switch and just be extra picky about the game you let him play.

But all games are 10 bucks or less. That is significantly different than paying 60 bucks a pop for a top tier switch game. And why would you want to let your kids play an evil 3D game anyway? They should be playing OG intellivision and NES games at young ages.

Let me clarify...Tommy Tallarico IS involved...no bigger wet cunt than that.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I'm sure this is an unpopular opinion, but I respect the hustle. The thing sounds great on paper, just.... not in today's world where it's impossible to succeed with this model.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Yikes those specs

So essentially it's just this:

I hope they don't try to sue NeoGAF since I just took screenshots of what was in OPs link.

People for get about that Walmart $400 Wii knockoff console with 30 SNES style shovelware games made in 3 minutes with no 3D Capability outside the bowling game.

Tommy is fucking nuts.

He says Nintendo supports child rape in their games.

He has a "Nintendo violence" and "Haters" folder on his desktop. (Shown at the end)

Jesus...dude needs to advertise his Amico on Fox

I do wonder why Nintendo lawyers have not eaten this asshole's lunch yet. He must have been flying under everybody's radar.

It's not really news for those who pay attention to his youtube drama that he's been calling out Switch as the platform to buy if you're into violence and child porn.

The whole thing is just a bad joke now, and ironic since he had his little tantrum and threatened to sue a news outlet.

Tommy, you're making it tough for me to like you. You triggered Schreier the liar but then you had to lose your mind. Just mock the pathetic hipster trust fund baby and move on.

I like the concept and their ten commandments. The controller looks weird but apparently it works surprisingly well after you've tried it. This thing could be the ultimate couch-coop machine. I remain cautiously optimistic.

Best chance is to release it now. There's no competition in stores since the scalpers cleared the shelves of the other consoles. Do it before the Nintendo Switch Pro comes out.

I tought Ouya served as a example of why this type of consoles are destined to fail. Guess someone didnt got the memo and created a 10 commandments list to keep developers away.

Ouya failed 'cause many things.

The main reason was Ouya could do lot of things decently but people needed just one thing done right.

In fact, that's the reason why Ouya had a successful kickstarter, something people don't remember. Why a good kickstarter led to a catastrophic product? Because people just saw the potential when they backed it, but there wasn't a real product behind except for some emulation and videos.

Probably to not give this guy any form of promotion, be it negatively. This thing will launch with a whimper anyway. If it launches at all. Everything just smells, from shilling YT nobodies to his own completely retarded propaganda.

I love everything about it except that friggen controller, it just looks like the worst thing ever for gaming I can't even begin to understand what they are thinking.

True story, Tommy Tallarico has a hater folder on his Desktop. He accidently showed his Desktop on one of the many interviews he's done with low sub count youtube channels.

Other than the price, the big issue here seems to be that it's a really bad deal for devs. There's almost no way to make money and since they are demanding exclusives they're really requiring a level of investment that makes no sense. Unless Intellivision is going to fund all the games made for this thing I don't know how they're going to attract any devs.

The weak hardware would be fine if it was priced reasonably. I am sure the controllers have their own compute and drive prices up somewhat but anything over $150 seems absurd.

Another questionable thing. The Amico has already been delayed twice and there is no signs it will make the Oct 2021 date either, and what is Tommy doing right now, he's on vacation. The level of incompetence is baffling with this company.
