How?

First-party exclusives:
  • Spider-Man 2 (90)
  • Horizon Burning Shores (82)
  • God of War Ragnarok Valhalla (87)
Full exclusives:
  • Final Fantasy 16 (87)
So that's 2 huge AAA exclusive games at or near 90 MC. And 2 very loved and acclaimed expansions.

Then other smaller PS Studios exclusive stuff:
  • PS VR 2
  • Horizon Call of the Mountain
  • Firewall Ultra
  • GT 7 PS VR 2
That's more and better exclusive content than the direct competitor -- on top of a wonderful exclusive games library since Nov. 2020.

How was 2023 a joke?

When you break it down, there is only one platform holder that actually had a joke of a year compared to the competition, and it wasn't Sony.

The most anticipated game of 2024 according to the TGA is FF7 Rebirth and you will be able to play it exclusively on PS5 in just two months.

Your problem here is that you assume consumers in general are that concerned about who made the exclusives. Only forum warriors care that much. At the end of the day, the vast majority of consumers only want to know that a game is good and what platform they can play it on.
I don't care about exclusives on that way. I think Sony make most of the best sp games out there. But they are on bad track in terms of quantity.

Yeah, for this year, probably only Dragon Dogma 2 will sell better, and that's because it's multiplatform

Regardless, Sony does a good job of working with 3rd parties to fill in the gaps and make their platform appealing. Whether it's co-developing/publishing a game like Rise of the Ronin/Stellar Blade or purchasing exclusivity like FF7. From a financial standpoint, it's the biggest edge they have in the gaming landscape. As long as Sony continues to sell 100+ million consoles, studios will contine to work with them. Microsoft can't do that
