Yup.

The garage encounter wasn't as bad on my second Legendary play, because I planned ahead better. I brought a sniper rifle along, and used a Chopper to cross the break in the highway. I used that to take out the entire group near the beginning of the encounter, and saved the sniper rifle for the Chieftains. With them down, the entire encounter is much easier. Something about not having rows of fuel rod blasts going off every few seconds while fighting the 20-30 other guys.

I think the grenades are pretty well balanced now against the Warthogs. It takes two to blow a 'hog up, and only one of either variety to flip it. I get a kick out of flipped a rampaging 'hog on Rat's Nest for the team to obliterate.

*sigh*

I was hoping Moonbase Alpha (codename) was a big map. I guess not. :(

With BTB becoming ranked fairly soon, I hoped they add another one to join Valhalla, Sandtrap, and Rat's Nest.

who was it that started the ForgeGAFclan silver account? I am still waiting to be accepted, and maybe get some forge opinions or some games in with you guys.

Now that the game has spike grenades plazmas are only good on walking targets now, you just have to remember that spike grenades are basicly anti-vehicle 'nades.

I prefer it tbh, I love throwing a spike grenade at a dashing ghost for the whole thing to just explode into pieces and get a kill :D

I live alone, my lights were out, and I was very tired. I had been exploring for an hour or so and hadn't seen anything extraordinarily cool. After Johnson's death, I started backtracking through the level. I was in a very dark room (in the game) and, having an LCD monitor, the blacks were blacker than normal, so I actually got a bit disoriented and was trying to get my bearings - when I turned and saw this:

Needless to say, I practically had a heart attack. It took me a few seconds to realize what it was.
What is that exactly, a hidden image of a bungie worker or a space hidden model of something?

My garage encounter on legendary was this
6kfqg3r.jpg

I triggered checkpoints too fast, because I was sniping from here, so the brutes came in faster than I could kill them.
835x1mb.jpg

Didn't do that good of a job and my sniper ammo was out so I had to engage them from close by. Tried so many times, from the left of the map, the right. There were just too many and there weren't any checkpoints to trigger so I had to beat them all in one go, without dying.
Then I went through the tubes on the right, while all those brutes were focusing their firepower on the dropship and the warthogs and tried to hijack this ride.
8eiu6ms.jpg

Took me a lot of tries before I nailed it (the jackal in the distance sniped me a couple of times when I just got in), but it got the job done and cleared the rest of the level with it.

High Ground should be in BTB like it was in the beta. :P

Some crazy, chaotic fun there.

That exp thing...

Didn't ferrex (back when he came here) say that the exp system would prevent honorable players from playing with people like that? Was it all BS?

IIRC, one of the phantoms that comes down drops off over a dozen Brutes. It's a....um.....brutal sequence. I chose that pic to represent it because the wraith moved in fairly early, when there were over a dozen Brutes, including a captain and a chieftain, still in the mix. And then another phantom drops off more part way through. IIRC, it took me 2-3 hours to get out of that one.

It's still one of my favorite battles in the game. It's one of several parts of the game where on Legendary where Bungie decided to make things utterly ridiculous. I love those moments.

He was talking about people who use standby. I think I've only run into that once or twice in Halo 3, which is a big improvement from Halo 2. Not sure what to attribute that to.

I'm downloading yours now Tieno, thanks for the heads up.
I just ran through Crow's Nest on Legendary in about 45 minutes. It wasn't as difficult as I remembered it being the first time. I died a lot, but it might help you to see some of the strategies I used. And by "strategies," I mean "hiding and sticking my head out to shoot." :lol And it was actually more fun than I remembered it being.

I put up my legendary run of Covenant, it's probably the most interesting one in my opinion.

Took me a while and I die a lot, but sometimes I just get something in my head in terms of how I want to go about it.

Maybe I do, too. :lol Yeah, it isn't always that fun playing that way, but it's the best strategy I've found. Legendary, for me at least, is about conquering a mountain and not about having fun. That's probably why I haven't finished it solo, yet. : /

I had LOTS of fun playing Legendary alone in Crows Nest (specially against the first brute pack). Also every encounter with the scarabs and pretty much everything in the ark (specially the towers section ), and i died A LOT but it was really fun.

You had mentioned in your previous post that you still had your Legendary run through so I checked your file share.
Still have the screenshots and the saved films.
I guess it wasn't really a heads up, more like a pointer.

Anyway thanks for putting up your Covenant run through, will check it out shortly.

Cocopjojo, thanks also. I will have a look soon.

If anyone is interested in these run through's then I came across this guy who had shared his rather spanking files.

From this week's update:

Currently, EXP penalties are not factored into what matches players together.
which is why I got a -675 penalties guy matched up with me a while back

There appears to be some kind of bug or something in Sandtrap on Big Team Battle that brings the game to 1 FPS. And it is definitely the framerate and NOT lag.

After viewing a film of where it happened and then experimenting in a custom game, we are 99% sure it's a physics issue with the elephant. A lot of people are now positioning [their] elephants on 45 degree angles and stuff to prevent the other team from climbing on it and planting the bomb or grabbing the flag. Usually this doesn't do anything but sometimes (I guess depending on where it's positioned) it can bring the game to a crawl.

We experimented this in a custom game by moving the elephant towards the crashed phantom (or scarab, whatever it is) debris by the banshee spawn. Sure enough the game became a slideshow. Simply drive the elephant up on the debris there and it'll happen. (Even when you get out of the elephant the fps will still be crap as long as the elephant is positioned there).

I saved the film of it happening in a real matchmaking game for you bungie guys to investigate (it happens a few minutes in right after our team arms the second bomb, the entire match is under 6 minutes): http://www.bungie.net/stats/Halo3/FileShare.aspx?gamertag=Shadow540

I hope this is something that can be fixed in time for the auto update patch.

Nope! Late in the week I got a gaggle of codes for XBLA games. I kept one and gave a few others away, but still have codes for Tempest and Tron on XBLA. You can have'em both if you're interested. :D

Let me know and I'll shoot you a PM.

PM incoming. I usually give these away quietly, but I though this would be a fun way to do it. Enjoy. I'm sure no one else has any idea what we're talking about. :D

I'm currently on Tsavo Highway (literally, I hit pause to take a break) on Legendary. All these shots of the garage encounter made me want to go back and play it again solo. For a challenge (...what?) I have Catch, Thunderstorm, Mythic and Cowbell turned on as well. Handing a FRG to a Marine and watching him plow into the first pack on this encounter, with Catch turned on, resulted in the craziest pile of unbridled anarchy I've seen so far in the game. When I beat this run (probably about 4:00 am at this rate) I'm going to take some screens. It was insane.

Right now I just dropped the first Chieftain using the sniper rifle, which triggered the phantom to drop off reinforcement and the wraith to pull up into firing range. The only problem is, I targeted the Chieftain first, so that means I'm looking at a pack of ~30 dudes. In one spot, it's a wall so thick I don't even have to aim - there's no space between about 10 guys all in a group. :lol

ODST rock!

Halo 3 was my GOTY because of those great moments. While most other games I've played this year also had some kickass cool moments, they were usually scripted and everyone had it like that. There's nothing really wrong with that, I like that too, but I find the moments I had in Halo 3 I had a bigger part and impact in and thus more personal and therefor superior, at least to me.

I'm resigning for the night, about 3/4 of the way through the garage fight. It's not as satisfying as it could be because the wraith either pulled back or disappeared on one of my ammo scavenging runs. But the ~15 brutes and the Chieftain that remain are plenty. I had an epic, 15-minute shootout with a single Chieftain. Towards the end it was the two of us separated by a chunk of the space tether just tall enough to cover me. I put 100 Carbine, ~400 Assault Rifle, ~150 BR and at the end a full Plasma Pistol full of rounds into him - and that's on top of nailing him with a mine/grenade combo to get the party started. He never showed any signs of wear. (The first one took over a dozen sniper rounds to the head to drop.) I got taken down when I drifted too close to the rest of the pack and got nailed by a barrage of Carbine fire.

Absurd. Fun, though.

Is that what it takes to kill one of those suckers on Legendary with Mythic turned on? Christ on ice! Remind me to NEVER TRY THAT!!! Legendary presented a nice challenge (for the most part) but thats just torturing yourself dude. You have my respect as a man and a Haloer.

Seeing as you seem to enjoy that, you really NEED to play Crows Nest and the infamous Brute Pack fight on normal, with Tough Luck, Catch, Fog, Famine, Thunderstorm, Tilt and Mythic.

Thats a lot of skulls. Has anyone tried it on Legendary with them all on? (i'll give an exception for Blind skull as that one is no fun) i might try it just for shits and giggles :lol

I did that while going for the metagame score! Damn that fight is something else isn't it. Tilt is the skull that really makes that encounter hard imo. It was there that I got very impressed by the Brute AI. I abused the cover located near the entrance, until the lesser brutes got the order to advance on me and they even destroyed it with their nades. Then I had to pull back to the right and use the truck located there for some cover. Insane fight, think I only beat it with Tilt turned off.

It's manageble because of normal shields (can take a lot of firepower) and leaves room for error. It's tough adapting to the constant barrage of plasma nades, but after a while you learn to dodge them. Brutes are very hard, but having to take them on with charged plasma pistol sometimes makes them feel like Elites. It's a very different playing experience.
http://www.bungie.net/Stats/GameStatsCampaignHalo3.aspx?gameid=22358295&player=Tieno360
Got 28k points, 14 deaths (felt like way more though, weird)

I've been redirected once to a post on Bungie.net where a guy was trying to go through the game with all the skulls on, on legendary. Even the one where you have to restart the level if you die and the one where you can't see your gun and stuff. He had finished the first level. MADNESS.

I've been playing DLC all night and, for the most part, have been really enjoying it. One thing I've discovered is that I really enjoy VIP. Most people, when they're the VIP, try and hide. But I see it as a never ending overshield and try go on a rampage of killing. In one game, I fought my way to other side of Rat's Nest, found the other VIP, and killed him. He was probably wondering what the heck I was doing.:lol

I've also discovered that I enjoy playing defense during multi-flag games. I went 15-0 for only the second time since I began playing Halo3. In that same game on Rat's Nest, a warthog came flying into the base with two people in it. The gunner gets out and grabs the flag. Meanwhile, I place a gravity lift by the warthog. As the driver is trying to back out of a corner, the warthog and myself get lifted to the second level of the room. I assassinate the driver as he is tossed out of the vehicle. At the same time, the guy with the flag is probably wondering what happened to his ride and runs out of the entrance, up the steps, and circles back around, drawing two of my teammates after him. I am halfway through following them when I decide to come back to the flag room. It turned out that the flag carrier came back and dropped down into the room only for him to run into me and a brute mauler. It's kind of funny when unique scenarios like that unfold. You won't get that in CoD4.

I've got it in my file share under "Resourceful D," if anyone wants to look at it. In fact, I'd love to see what other people have in their file share. Post links to your file share pages and I'll download some clips.:D

Did that for the metagame soring too, but it was so tough that I was scared shitless for the garage fight on Tsavo Highway (even more than playing it on legendary) so I turned off tilt. I was dieing too much and loosing too many points because of that skull anyway.

As i said in a previous post, I love that encounter, its one of my favourites in the legendary playthrough.

The narrow and at the same time open environment (the semiopened doors, the exposed space below the trailer, the floor and bridge above), the destructible elements, and theres a lot of room for approaching it in very different ways.

Ok, it's been a very long time since I first asked this but I'm going to try again.

On the screen where you select which level you want to play in campaign you can see your highest completed difficulty in both single player and co-op. What's strange about this screen is that some of the levels are showing an additional "shine" on the difficulty images, while others don't. I've spoken with a few people and they have shine on different levels to the ones I do, or no shine at all.

If you flick between them you'll see it, but it's subtle. Does anyone know what this indicates?

It's not a shine, it's just a graphical error. It's likely that they couldn't decide whether or not they wanted the swords and skull to be translucent or not, so some of them show up as translucent and some don't. I've spoken to someone (maybe ferrex?) and he said that he had never heard of it, but that he was a MP guy, so it's possible that it meant something - but unlikely. But the fact that he hadn't heard of it most likely means that it doesn't mean anything.

If you look at it, it's fairly obvious (to me, at least) that it doesn't mean anything. If it was an actual glow or shine then it might indicate something.

ROFL!! I just downloaded it and finished watching. I bet the other team was pissed! The second person you killed was sooo close, well... most of them were. Nice work. I'll probably watch some more later today. I haven't gone to sleep yet and really need to crash.

I see what you're saying... but they're going to be using the same image for legendary / heroic / normal right the way through the game so why do certain images displaying my legendary completion status have the "corruption" and others don't. It doesn't make any sense.

The "Fight" column is how many are on the field after the second Phantom drops off; I ended up with 19 Brutes because all I did was snipe the Chieftain from the first, which is the trigger for the second wave of reinforcements.

I had three Marines with me in addition to the three under assault from the initial group. Two additional Brutes are in the Wraith, and there are a pair each of Brutes and Grunts who man the turrets of the Phantoms but don't jump down into the fight.

The Brute Soldiers can take a plasma stick and survive, and absorb two full BR clips and a full Carbine clip without dropping. At my save point I've got them whittled down to about 10 (one Captain, one Chieftain), and I'm having to run back to the previous encounter for ammo. :lol

This encounter is going to go down as one of the most memorable of all time.

I've noticed that a large portion of people I play with (much more than half) are muted. If I try to unmute them, it says they are muted in my Xbox Guide and I should undo it there. I also frequently get 3 on 4 matches (one person never joins the lobby).

Is this related to the recent Xbox Live problems? Or does have anyone have any ideas what's going on?

You'd be able to transport five teammates with that hog so it'd be pretty cool for rushing the base in CTF and Assault. Sure the laser could get an overkill on it but I don't see why that's a good reason not to add it.

Think of it more like a mongoose that can hold 3 extra people instead of a warthog without a gun...

how would you use the transport hog in multiplayer that wouldn't just result in an overkill for the guy with a lazer or missile pod
Rapid way to transport five guys, I suppose. Mongoose are usually given in pairs, so I'd rather use those. Faster, more mobile and you can split up into two groups. Would be nice to have the option though. If for nothing but the occasional easy overkill. :lol

Anyhoo. I beat the last two major battles on Tsavo on Legendary with catch, thunderstorm, mythic and cowbell. I wanted to try Tieno's suggestion for Crow's Nest, but I enjoy the large numbers of guys that Legendary brings, so I did it on that difficulty with catch, thunderstorm and cowbell turned on through the hallway fight with the hammer Chieftain. Not as hard as I thought it would be, but that has a lot to do with my selection of weapons: I brought a fully-stocked needler and a shotgun. The needler saved my butt many times, and was a great way to shred the carbine-toting guys that always pin me down. It was crucial, as the Chieftain decided to come out with three or four guys still around.

I think catch + thunderstorm + cowbell + legendary difficulty is a nice sweet spot between a fun challenge and a grueling slog. If I'm in the mood for self abuse, I'll turn on mythic again, but so far this combination has been really fun.

This game has replay out the wazoo.
