I'm sorry to derail all the lovely Forge festivities. My Halo 3 disk won't read. I have the Legendary Edition, so it's not the same problem as the LEs. I've tried all my other 360 games, and they play fine. Everything else works fine on the system. Demos, streaming, marketplace, and XBLA. So does this mean my console is dying, or is it just the disk? I'm going to take it to Blockbuster and have them run it through the disk cleaning machine. Is that a good or bad idea?

I've never had a DRE on either of my previous 360s, which broke down due to RROD. I did have the DVD drive on my original XBOX go out (Thompson). Please tell me it's just the disk and not the hardware please!
 
ATTN: Luke, Stinkles, etc.

Found a bug.

Lazily I set some respawn points and they fell down in a crack between some boxes and the outside wall. One respawn I had actually put me outside the outer wall where the pipes are. Pretty interesting way of getting out of the map.

Try cleaning your cache/disk maintainance first, with the Vulcan death grip button combo, which I can' remember right now.
 
Well really it all stemmed from me being lazy.

Step 1. Put a double box near the outside wall.
Step 2. If you can go down in the crack, but are unable to jump out of it.. your set.
Step 3. Throw a respawn down near the crack and hope it falls down the crack.
Step 4. Steal underpants
Step 5. Die
Step 6. See if you spawn outside of the walls.

Tried it. Still no go :( Thanks anyway.

If Blockbuster's machine doesn't work, I'll call MS tomorrow to see what I should do. I think/hope it's just the disk and not my system.
 
Another slight derailment from the cool as hell Forgering talk but i was looking at my stats on B.net abd saw i had some kills with the flag. I scrolled over the flag pic and what do i see?

I just came here to post the exact same thing. The disc has zero scratches on it and has worked fine up until the other day when I started getting some random DRE. I tried to load it up today only to find out that it can't read the disc at all now. Every single game I have works without a hitch and that should be no different with Halo as it's in damn near perfect condition... what gives?

Edit: Now that I think about it, I've only started having these problems after I downloaded the Heroic map pack...
 
Getting out the forge map building is pretty easy but you cannot go far at all without hitting some kind of death dealing invisable wall, still was fun to stick teleporters out there and piss about.
 
Don't know if this is related the the DRE but I was in the campaign and there was some serious framerate dropping when a Phantom came down at one point.
 
Just finished off my first forge map.

It's called "Citadel" and designed to be a team slayer primarily ( and FFA should work out ok too).

The idea was to create a good high ground area in the center of the map but limit it's complete domination by having the ranged weapons spawn away from the peak. The Citadel in the center offers no real cover, but great visibility.

Map may have too many BR's at this point. Going to have to find the balance over some time.

I've got a few more tweaks to make and then I'll probably be ready to let this one loose tomorrow. I want to sleep on it before I finalize it.
 
I like that one, Dirtbag. It looks clean and minimalistic yet interesting.

I've been interested in using the ability to levitate spaces in Forge. It's challenging to design this way, as the floors are constantly deleted and lining things up is challenging. So, the first attempt is a simple one.

I call it Ascent. I still need to place weapons and scenery, but the floors are done. It...took a while. It's so obvious I'm assuming someone else has done this already.

Very simple: three levels with the floors made up of six cargo containers each. Ramps go up the middle and up the sides, with man cannons on either edge that launch directly to the top level. Gravity lifts can launch to the second level so you don't have to go all the way around to the bottom ramps. (the containers on the floor in the background need to be deleted - just noticed them)

The idea is to make a simple siege-style map for very rapid King of the Hill, Assault and 1-Flag CTF games, but rather than go from one base to another along the length of the map, you go up it. Attackers can climb the three routes up the middle and launch immidately to the top from either side via man cannons; the wall at the top prevents anyone from falling off the edge. Simple, because I can't do complex.

Naturally, the top has soccer balls waiting to be tipped down the ramps. They respawn rapidly.

There's some quirks. Right now you have to hit the man cannons just so, as they seem to alternately shoot you straight as an arrow to the top, or launch you up rather than forward, so you hit the soft ceiling and drop down to the floor. There's a sweet spot. At the top level, you can't jump very high, since it's so close to the ceiling. That has a nice benefit, though: guys on top don't have a good line of sight to the bottom floor, and they can't jump high enough to get one. The crane also is something I had to work around, so there's a drop-off in the middle of it.

Tomorrow I'll add the rest of the stuff to provide a bit of cover on the way up. Because I think in very simple terms, a King of the Hill mode with hammers and the Spartan Laser could be fun.

I've spent more time in Forge than playing in matchmaking. :lol

I haven't had a chance to play with any GAF members yet, but I'd be down for that. I'm a team player. :D
 
So, any ideas as to why some of our games just stopped working?

Do I need to buy another copy or will MS send me a replacement? I want to play *sigh* by the time I get it all sorted out the Heroic DLC playlist will most likely be taken down.

I'm home for the holidays and I there isn't an internet connection here. Does this mean it's impossible for me to access the map pack? Specifically forge/foundary? How does that make sense?

EDIT: It's the same for XBLA it seems. I'm sure I'm not the first.
 
Update is live! Im 2 for 2 in Hardcore :D

Cant believe how much i enjoyed Epitaph in a team game. Usually dont like it but no Enemies on Radar make it less of a capmpfest

Eh? Are you using a 360 that already has the downloaded content you're looking for? I assume you're not complaining that you can't download content without an internet connection.

I went out and rented a copy today. Popped it in and it worked right away. I have no idea why my disk just stopped working. But the rental played just fine. Weird.

Yeah, I have the content--I even have existing forged content and was hoping to finish my second map, I can see the files in the 360 system menu, I'm signed into my profile, but can't access the content.

I've seen posts on several forums, including this one, from others mourning their newly non-functional Halo 3 disk. Very strange.

Random side-note: any one else have a small issue getting access to the new maps in Forge? Every time I boot up, I go into the Forge menu and the maps are not there. I hit B to back out, then re-enter Forge and the new maps are on the list. It's not a big deal, but I haven't seen anyone else mention it.

Yup. I think it's a loading issue. In fact, Bungie addressed it in part in the news article about the map pack.

But yeah, happens to me each and every time.

No errors?

Try switching the Lobby to Local and see what you can do.

It doesn't show up in the menus. Switching lobbies doesn't work either. I can see a saved film, but it gives me the generic something's wrong, it might be a save from an old version of Halo 3 or some such thing.

Every time. It feels like H3 needs to poll Live to see if your tag bought the DLC. I thought that I was just getting into the Forge menu too quickly each time and didn't give the game/Live enough time to update the map list with the results as to wether or not I paid for the DLC.
 
I've noticed something pretty cool today while playing in Forge.

I had that happen on the initial load after the download. It says something to the effect of "There was a problem loading this map." I restarted the 360 and it sorted itself out. If I remember, it asked me to select the storage device again as well.

Bum deal, dude. I guess you could try to contact MS. Good luck with all that. :(

Ah, thanks (and PrivateWHudson). I've read those articles but must have missed that detail.

jet1911 - very cool detail. The lighting in this game still amazes me at times.
 
There appears to be a high level of randomness to the angle a man cannon will fire you in. The map I'm working on - Ascent - requires the cannon to fire players on a straight angle to the top. It seems to work in fits. I've been testing it, approaching from multiple angles and with varying degrees of momentum, and there's no pattern for when it fires straight and when it launches too high up, sending players into the soft ceiling. I've had stretches of 10x in a row where it worked, and just now, the same cannon, didn't work 20x in row. Maddening.

Just spent over an hour doing nothing but trying to get them to work consistently - to no avail. So that map is down the tubes. I wish the soft ceiling was about five feet higher - that's all it would take.

I had the same problem with the map I built. I ended up changing the angle of the cannon by putting a fence behind it and leaning it against it. You can take a look at it if you'd like. It seems to fix my problems.

EDIT: It seems that you are already playing with the angle from your description. Sorry to hear all that work was for nothing.

have you tried with other colors like red and blue making purple?
