Will we get any previews of the map before they launch? Those pictures are nice but they don't tell me that much really.
I thought they said they'd give us more info after they got back from T-day, but so far nothing new has come out. Two weeks to go though.

I'm sure they'll have a Humpday Challenge on the new maps, or invite the press to play them and have the websites post impressions. There will be something.

Is this game even possible on Legendary solo?
Oh, definitely. I'm in the process of making my way through it, and I know plenty of folks that have already done it. Ghaleon, for example.

Yup. It takes a lot of patience in some of the harder battles. On my first play through on Legendary, I spent most of the time alternately pinned down or fleeing in terror.

However, the second time through I made smarter choices. A Chopper can get accross the broken bridge to the big fight on Tsavo Highway, so take that instead of the 'hog. Save sniper rounds for the Chieftains. My second play through on Legendary, I was actually pretty agressive , making very heavy use of equipment.

It's hard. But oh so satisfying when you get through the rough parts.

I beat it by myself on Legendary too. Some parts were just crazy, but it was a lot of fun. Cortana especially was nuts. I was glad once I beat that level because you have to constantly be careful on that level. The most aggravating parts for me wasn't Cortana, it was the Barracks part in the Crow's Nest level and the part in Tsavo Highway where the wraiths first show up after the fuel rod guy and other brutes. For the latter, I just ran. :lol For some reason, if you can escape, the enemies disappear when you get far enough and they drop the Warthog.

I´ve been playing legendary solo the past days and recently got past the first scarab at the Storm (in which i died a lot but it was fun nonetheless, and strangely found the level to be more beautiful and bigger than in previous playtroughs).

In the wraith section at Tsavo highway you die a lot also but its not anywhere near impossible not even reaching halo2 1st level insanity (which remains top spot for me as crazy difficult and not fun at all).

Regarding warthog/chopper at the bridge, i went for the hog with me driving and letting marines fire, which they are pretty good at. I like the chopper, is fun and strong in terms of firepower but its not as manageable as the hog and having so many enemies there you get surrounded lots of times and your back is a very weak spot.

For now i´ve found Crows nest to be the most enjoyable and one of my favourite sections of the game. Its tough, tense, but lots of fun, specially the first brute pack portion. You need to use equipment, the space is limited yet very open and dinamic and forces you to move a lot. It reminds of all that is good about HaloCE legendary.

I find myself agreeing with Ghaleon recent comments regarding small, narrow battles being the most interesting instead of the big open and epic encounters.

I suppose Cortana will be a pain to go through. I hope i can make it at least having some fun.

I personally beat the game solo on legendary and it wasn't as hard as I thought. I'm definitely in agreement with some of the individuals, who have already commented, when they say its best to run past some encounters. I had the worst time with Tsavo Highway (particularly the wraith gang bang) and Cortana (pretty much anything). Also make sure to let the Arbiter do most of the work. He is surprisingly good at killing enemies, he has unlimited ammo, swords, and other perks that can get you past some tricky spots (the climb up the ramps in the Halo level for instance).

Anybody else seen the new ViDoc on Marketplace? Its a story rundown from Halo CE to Halo 3 by the Bungie crew. Didnt see it mentioned anywhere so i thought id give you guys a heads up. Im in the UK by the way, if that matters. Its nice listening to the guys talking about the story as a whole. Its pretty long too. Anyways, give it a looksy.

New Vidoc? Groovy. Looksl like HBO is talking about it as well, but there's nothing on b.net or Major Nelson. I wonder if it got out early or something.

oh shit, awesome! thanks

Yup, I just got home and saw there was a new Halo 3 ViDoc called Journey's End - sounds like it's a mini-movie or something too - it just finished so I'm off to watch it now! :D

Edit: It looks like it's a documentary of all of the three Halo stories, complete with commentary and footage, starting with the first Halo!

Kind of a missed opportunity they didn't release this before the release of Halo 3. It's a great way to bring people up to date and start Halo 3. (cause they don't go into what happened in Halo 3)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, but it wouldn't have worked exactly like they wanted it to. It shows too many important scenes from Halo 3. Maybe it would have been nice to do something like this and only use scenes from Halo 1 and 2 to describe Halo 3's plot, though.

Huh? Like... do you have roommates or did someone steal it?

i wish it continued through halo 3's story line as well, but for obvious reasons that would likely never be released on the marketplace. would have been nice on the documentary though, oh well.

I'm playing through Legendary with skulls on. It's hard.
I griped that I didn't like any of the skulls....but then went back and humbled myself. I was playing on Heroic and getting CRUSHED, and it wasn't fun. I went back and played through campaign on Normal (I know, I know) with Thunderstorm, Catch and Tough Luck for the gold and Grunt Birthday Party and Cowbell for silver skulls. (I had Famine in there for some levels a well.) It was a bit harder than a straight Heroic run, but not as tough as Legendary.

And it was pretty fun, a few encounters aside (though my fellow marines blew me up with some rambunctious grenade tosses several dozen times). I think skulls will be more fun in co-op, on Legendary.

Only a few of them seem to be fun, though. Losing my HUD or radar doesn't make the game hard in a way that I enjoy, nor does Iron - it just makes it harder. The three I used and the one that gives the enemy more health spiced things up in an entertaining way.

Catch is too much for me on Heroic. Brutes and grunts are hurtling grenades at you like the The Big Unit.

Grunt Birthday Party is ALWAYS fun. Plus it conditioned me to go for headshots in campaign.

I got my score achievements on Normal with pretty much those same skulls turned on (plus Mythic). Blaze through for the time bonus, and the scores are easy to get.

Heh. I didn't realize the time bonus was applied at the end of the mission. I saw the multiplier going down and assumed it was applied to the kills I got in that timeframe. I started the first mission over three times, all at the very end, before I got on the Pelican, because my score was less than 15,000. I finally got over that and finished the level - and then the multiplier cranked it up to over 30,000. Doh! :lol

It was the hanger bay encounter on Crow's Nest that broke my back on Heroic. There wasn't enough maneuvering room in the back section to avoid the Cowbell-enhanced barrage from all directions. It was right after an hour of failure on that mission that I bitched on GAF about the skulls not being fun. I need to learn to not post in the moment.

Having Catch turned on for the big hallway fight consisting mostly of Grunts, with fusion cores and cargo equipment blowing up all over the place, is one of my favorite moments of pure carnage in the game (when you open the door and see a warthog get blow up). Explosions all over, chaining together as debris ricochets all over the place. Lovely.

Use this for normal (solo): Tough Luck, Catch, Fog, Famine, Thunderstorm, Tilt, Mythic, Cowbell and IWHBYD.
Makes that Brute barracks fight really hard and unusual. Dancing all over the place. Because of normal, your shields can resist a little more damage from the catch-cowbell-grenade parties so you have a little more room for error and experimentation.

I'll try that, sans Fog and Tilt. I enjoy the way Halo 3 provides tons of ways to tackle encounters differently in part depending on my weapon selection, and Tilt narrows that. Again, it would be more fun in co-op when players have different weapons and have to work together. As for Fog.....I need that radar. With Catch turned on, I got blindsided by too many grenades and I couldn't tell where they were coming from; poor situational awareness. Weaksauce total.

I didn't get the IWHBYD skull, because I want those crazy lines of dialog to continue to surprise me; they're one of the lasting joys of Campaign. I hear new stuff on every playthrough of each game. That's the only skull that turns on a cheat I simply don't want to experience at any time.

Tilt and Fog made that Brute barracks fight so tough and different. Only found one plasma pistol lying around to strip brutes of their armor. If you could do that, you can take the spike grenades from some of the dead brutes that you can get to, lure the other brutes upstairs and try to sticky them. The Hammer hero brute took a very long time as I kept dodging him, running away from him, using the portable grav lifts, unloading my BR, unloading the gatling gun. I still remember it so vividly.
The fog skull made traversing the upper level of the barrack that more exciting and difficult, as you had to really be aware of the brutes not sneaking up on you.
That fight took me longer than it did first time on heroic or second time on legendary (even with much improved skills from those two times).

35+ days :-(

I thought they were going to do more podcasts after halo 3's release.

One is already done and recorded and it's being mastered (from two days ago) and we're recording another one this afternoon! Chill, internetz. Frankie's back now and all is right in the world.

that was last week. They haven't even posted anything on bungie.net this week. I have seen Luke a couple times here, but it's been a long time since I've seen anything from frankie. (I know he went on his own month-long vacation).

I seriously cannot listen to some of the songs on the OST. The beginning of "Greatest Journey," for example. I've always been sentimental when it comes to epic stories (LotR is a hard watch for me), but... Marty O'Donnell is unbelievable. Tied with Howard Shore, his music seems the most connected to the story being told. It's some of the most moving music I've ever heard.

I've been listening to the soundtrack pretty heavily lately, and huge swaths of disk 2 are a gut punch, emotionally. As you said, it's impossible to disconnect the story from the music, and vice versa. I remain disappointed in aspects of the story in Halo 3, but the music really adds a lot. On my last play through, I skipped some cut scenes not due to time or lack of interest, but because I didn't feel like putting myself through the wringer at that moment.

I love to listen to all of Disc Two, but the last track kills the mood... And gets painfully stuck in your head.

I heard the sample on the soundtrack website, and that was enough. I haven't listened to it on the full version, and never will. Just as I never heard more than a few moments of the band music in Halo 2. (In that one, I just made a new disk without it and that was that.)

I've done the same thing.

I imported it all to iTunes and promptly deleted that track.

I can't listen to Greatest Journey/Tribute without getting goosebumps. And This Is The Hour is amazingly stirring, and probably my favourite piece in the OST. Mmm mmm mmm, Marty is a genius.

I'm going through the campaign yet again, this time solo on Legendary. It's a fantastic experience. Tsavo Highway and The Storm were completely different from Heroic, and I'm currently being repeatedly beaten to death by the first pair of hunters on The Ark. Truly the best single-player game I've ever played.

What is the song on the loading screen? Got it 'Never Forget', I adore the composition.

Oh and the opening of Greatest Journey is beautiful.

Damn I just listened to Never Forget on my high end cd player, I'm man enough to admit I had a lump in my throat.

It's finally on teh internets. Odd that B.net still hasn't mentioned it. It's been up on Live since earlier today.
